Scout Picks

FPL Gameweek 4 Scout Picks features Chelsea triple-up and Bruno over Ronaldo

As they prepare to face Aston Villa on Saturday, three Chelsea players form the spine of our Gameweek 4 Scout Picks.

After Sam, Az, Neale and Tom submitted their Scout Squad selections earlier this week, we have chosen our best players ahead of tomorrow’s 11.00 BST deadline.

We line up in a 4-4-2 formation and come in at £82.9m, just under our £83.0m budget.

GOALKEEPER

David Raya (£4.6m) is our chosen goalkeeper ahead of Brentford’s home fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 4.

The Bees stopper has already accumulated 17 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, picking up additional save points against both Arsenal and Aston Villa.

He’s also on top of the Baseline Bonus Points System (BBPS), in part due to his distribution when playing out from the back.

Thomas Frank’s side have restricted their opponents to just two big chances so far, and with Albion up next, will be confident of another shut-out in Gameweek 4.

DEFENDERS

The best FPL defenders for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard 3

Luke Shaw (£5.5m) may not have quite hit his 2020/21 heights so far this season, but still ranks amongst the top five defenders for chances created, and carries significant assist potential against Newcastle United this weekend.

His crossing ability from both dead-ball situations and open-play attacks will be key, while United’s clean sheet prospects look a whole lot stronger with the addition of Raphael Varane (£5.5m).

Lucas Digne (£5.4m) helped Everton record their first shut-out of the campaign against Brighton last time out, and is sure to benefit from new manager Rafa Benitez’s approach, which is largely based around crossing.

Up next for the Toffees is Burnley, who have conceded 15 headed attempts so far this season, more than any other side in the division. With corner-taking duties another route to points, Digne could be in for a big week.

Antonio Rudiger (£5.5m) is the first of our Chelsea picks. The German international has started and completed 90 minutes in all three Premier League matches this season, while opponents Aston Villa have managed just nine shots on target across their opening three fixtures. Add in at least a couple of missing first-teamers, and it’s no surprise that Chelsea top the bookies’ odds for a clean sheet this week.

Marcal (£4.5m) takes up the final spot in our backline. Over the opening three Gameweeks, he has attempted 19 crosses from the left-flank (the joint-fifth highest among all defenders), while Wolves have conceded just 20 shots in the box despite some tougher fixtures.

MIDFIELDERS

Captain Sensible – Gameweek 1 5

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is the first of our two premium midfield picks this week, having already combined two goals, two assists and 30 FPL points this season. The Egyptian’s total of 13 goal attempts ranks second amongst all players, while he has also supplied a league-leading three big chances for his team-mates.

Opponents Leeds United have tightened up at Elland Road in 2021, but Salah, who is just one goal shy of reaching a century in the Premier League, will surely fancy his chances against Marcelo Bielsa’s backline.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer planting seeds of doubts in our heads around how many minutes Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) will be afforded against Newcastle United, we’ve opted for Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) in this week’s Scout Picks XI. Despite back-to-back blanks, United’s playmaker hit an open-play hat-trick to earn a career-high 20 FPL point haul in his last Old Trafford appearance.

Mason Mount (£7.5m) has enjoyed a productive start to the season, bagging assists against Crystal Palace and Arsenal. Amongst all midfielders, he ranks top for expected assists (xA), with this weekend’s opponents – Aston Villa – missing first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

Adama Traore (£6.0m) has been the topic of many a Fantasy discussion over the international break, with Wolverhampton Wanderers about to embark on a kind run of fixtures. While his end product is perhaps in question, he’s top for chances created and joint-second for shots amongst all FPL midfielders from Gameweeks 1 to 3.

FORWARDS

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal

Passed fit by manager Thomas Tuchel earlier this afternoon, Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) looks like an excellent option for our forwards lines this week. The Belgian has started well at Chelsea, scoring against Arsenal in Gameweek 2, and has also reacked up 10 goal attempts and nine shots in the box across his opening couple of appearances.

West Ham United’s Michail Antonio (£7.9m) is the top-scoring player in FPL so far, and is one of just three players to have scored in each of the first three rounds. Opponents Southampton have kept just one clean sheet in their last 24 attempts in the Premier League, while West Ham have won six of their last seven meetings between them.

THE CAPTAIN

Who are the best captain options for FPL Gameweek 36+?

We choose the Scout Picks captain using a four-way vote between our Scout Squad pundits.

Bruno Fernandes was handed the armband by our quartet this time, with Romelu Lukaku picking up the vice-captaincy.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

FPL Gameweek 2 round-up: Sunday goals, assists, bonus and injuries 4

Each week, one of the Fantasy Football Scout community takes on the Scout Picks by pitting their chosen XI against ours.

The Community Member who beats our team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Moderators and Contributors League for the following season.

Our champion is week BobMcMayday, who has gone with a maverick 5-2-3 line-up of Pickford; Tierney, White, Shaw, Reguilon, Duffy; Salah, Jota; Aubameyang, Kane, Lukaku (c).

The Scout Picks are 3-0 up on the community this season.

He would have to really haul to happen the first night after his first appearance, but it could happen.

Max 0.1 per night, 0.3 per week.

5-2-3 to rival the scout picks is brilliant.

You aren’t going to beat the scout team by the large margin necessary for the prize by sticking to a similar template.

No, but you also need that team for the following week whereas the Scout team doesn't

I started with Bachman in gw1 just to be different and I was kicking myself in the head. Why didn’t I just go with Sanchez like everyone else? It cost me 4 points… not that bad but still annoying.

Now I am on a Wc and I thought: Now I can fix my mistake and get Sanchez but… I’ve seen people with Sanchez saying they can’t stand him anymore…

Maybe Raya is the way to go now?

Is he worth the extra .1?

His fixtures are about to get really bad…

What are your thoughts on gk?

    I can’t afford a 5.0. 4.6 is my limit.

Watford have good fixtures now so I would stick if I was you. Whose to say Bachmann can't outperform those you've mentioned? A needless hit for me.

I think Sanchez is still the best 4.5 over the long haul. At that price point, you wont get many clean sheets. You will get save points, and more importantly, more points by investing the money elsewhere.

If you wanted to go rogue you could go Krul, the best fixture run of the lot.

Don't think there is a standout 4.5m option like last year tbh
Bachman maybe more likely to get save points and bonus
Brighton a better defence so less shots at Sanchez = higher CS chances but usually not so many saves

Stamboy has a point though… the difference between the two is almost nothing. The points predictor on this site has them separated by one point over the next 6 weeks. It’s worth the membership fee to have that data (and no they aren’t paying me). 🙂

Thanks. I am either sticking with Bachman or switching to Sanchez…
I am on WC by the way.
I don’t think I want to spend extra .1 on Raya.

This is a tough one though… its not clear how long Jota will keep his place because nobody knows how long Firmino will be out. If we knew he was out 2 months, for example, its a no brainer to do B. If he is back next week, A might be really good.

I just wonder if Ronaldo will eat into Greenwood's minutes and shift him out to be in less central areas more often.

I sorta agree with the oops poster below. James will be great after GW 7. Shaw isn’t a bad choice now though. CR7 needs crosses into the box, and Shaw is the man for the job. Personally, I think CR7 benefits Shaw more than anyone else on United. That said, United’s fixtures turn poor soon, and James will have a 6-7 match run of green fixtures.

Shaw for now with CR7's headers - if I had a second team I would even think about captaining him this week with no Wilson and bookies pricing in 60% CS odds
James in a few GWs time once fixtures turn and when we get an idea of rotation in Chelsea DEF
Digne have been burned too many times in the past on

I actually did 2 (as did many others) so that one gets my vote. 1 isn’t terrible, but you will end up taking a hit to get to CR7 or Lukaku later (if you want one of the two), and most likely, DCL will be the one to make way.

      Exact same boat
Leaning 2, mainly as I like Jota this week
Ideally I'd like to see a match of CR7 first - e.g. who takes set pieces
DCL may not be immune to an early sub if he isn't 100% fit and now they have Rondon

Wow, this is a tough one. -8 pays off so rarely. I might hold and see what everyone makes of CR7 and then jump on this mini-wildcard if he does well. Tsimi is obviously the problem here.

What about Bruno to Torres and Ings to Ronaldo (-4)

      1. gart888
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 11 days ago

Agreed. Hits are almost always bad. No way the -8 pays off this week alone, would have to be over the next few weeks.

My thoughts on A is that I do Ings to DCL now, and then Bruno and Toney to Raphinha and Lukaku over the next two weeks. And then bring Ronaldo in for Lukaku when United get through that bad run of fixtures.

Would you WC in 7 then or hold?

DCL is a great pick (if he plays) and I really believe some people have CR7 fever. For me, I got him in this week, but I’m totally prepared to move him on for Lukaku in 7 or 8.

Would maybe WC in 7, or maybe hold. I feel like I'm kind of in wildcard purgatory, where my team isn't quite bad enough to need to use it... and will probably be in a similar position in weeks 7, and 12.

Joe created a wildcard which was way over budget and spent an hour talking about it….

Ya. Wasn’t the best scoutcast this week. Wish they would put a tighter timeframe on it. Limit it to an hour and it would be more effective.

Anyone else sceptical over Jota? Feels like a transfer waiting to happen if I bring him in, maybe gray or even pepe could be better picks

Yeah nice pick, I just hit the button on Jota and Ronaldo in before the price changes, doesn't feel too great with Jota but might even make .1 if he does only last 1 week. Spose that's more time to judge the likes of gray, traore, odegaard

    2. The King

Depends on how long Firmino is out for basically
Definitely while he is out he is great value given you pay 12m for Mane/Salah

I got him in this week, but I’m prepared to move on quickly if he loses his place. Hard to pass up a quality Liverpool striker at that price, IMHO.

James is not in the frame.
Gray is also undroppable based on form.

Thanks, who would you go for instead? I’ve had him since he was 6.0 so would be losing significant value if I sell. If he starts to show signs of slowing down, it’s an easy switch to Sarr/Gray/Traore etc.

I think its fine. Lots of people have soured on Ben given the recent blanks. The bigger question is who is a better selection. You could go Sarr or Raph at that price point, but that’s about it.

Son injury caused me all kind of headaches. Before that, I was going to do Bruno+Toney -> Sarr+Ronaldo..

Now it's one of the following options:

    A) Son -> Jota
    B) Son + Toney -> Sarr + Lukaku
    C) Son -> Sarr + lots and lots of cash for following week. But who am I going for after that..

Thoughts? Thinking that the Jota price rise could be worth jumping on anyways if Firmino is going to be out for any prolonged amount of time.. but also don't like doubling Salah and Jota. Sarr on pens and nailed on is nice for 3 weeks.

Firmino is the Key. If we knew he was going to be absent long term, Jota is a must own. Unfortunately, we just dont know.

If you have no bench, you might consider B. Lots of people will do Ronaldo to Lukaku in GW7 when the fixtures change.

If you have a decent bench, your original plan isnt bad.
