FPL Gameweek 6 Scout Picks: Leicester, West Ham and Liverpool double-ups

Leicester City, Liverpool and West Ham United are the three clubs with double-ups in the Gameweek 6 Scout Picks.

After Sam, Az, Neale and Tom submitted their Scout Squad selections earlier this week, we have chosen our best players ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

We line up in a 3-4-3 formation and come in at £82.9m, just inside our budget of £83.0m.

GOALKEEPER

Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) is our chosen goalkeeper ahead of Southampton’s home fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweek 6. The Saints stopper is coming off the back of two straight clean sheets against West Ham and champions Manchester City, with the latter defensive display particularly impressive, as they restricted Pep Guardiola’s side to just 0.97 expected goals (xG). As for their opponents, Bruno Lage’s side have the worst shot-to-goal conversation rate in the league and failed to register a single attempt on target against Brentford last time out.

DEFENDERS

Salah's role one to monitor in FPL as Alexander-Arnold continues forays infield 2

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.6m) is averaging 8.5 points per match this term, more than any other defender. The England international missed Gameweek 5 through illness, but is set to return to the Reds’ backline at Brentford this weekend. Jurgen Klopp’s side have kept five clean sheets across their seven matches in all competitions in 2021/22, while Alexander-Arnold carries significant assist potential and despite missing a match, ranks first amongst all defenders for expected assists (xA).

Leicester City’s backline hasn’t really convinced for a while now, but given that no team has conceded more headed opportunities and set-piece chances than Burnley this season, we’re backing towering defender Jannik Vestergaard (£4.9m) to deliver. There is also some potential for a clean sheet, given that Sean Dyche’s side have only scored three Premier League goals in 2021/22.

With our expensive purchases further forward, budget option Shane Duffy (£4.3m) takes up the final spot in our backline. Over the opening five Gameweeks, the Irishman has produced 27 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, a total which ranks ninth amongst all defenders, while his 29 clearances and 27 aerial duels won are both league-leading totals. Opponents Crystal Palace are playing with more attacking verve under Patrick Vieira, but Brighton have started well and these types of derby matches can be cagey affairs.

MIDFIELDERS

Is £4.0m FPL goalkeeper Foster the new Watford number one? 1

Following his 12-point haul in Gameweek 5, it’s now four Premier League goals and three assists for Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) this season. His 22 goal attempts, 19 shots in the box and three big chances created all rank among the top three players, while his 10 points per match average is unmatched. Following their midweek EFL Cup win, Liverpool have now scored three goals in four successive matches in all competitions, and while Brentford have served up some good defensive displays in 2021/22, they are yet to face an attack anywhere near as potent as this Reds’ side.

Leeds United are without a clean sheet to their name this season, and could be four centre-halves down by the time West Ham come calling. Tomas Soucek (£5.9m) was under serious consideration due to his aerial threat, but in the end, we opted for teammate Said Benrahma (£6.5m). The Algerian was a bit fortuitous to get his deflected goal against Manchester United, but will head into this one brimming with confidence having already registered five attacking returns this season.

Against Norwich City in Gameweek 5, Ismaila Sarr (£6.1m) was particularly impressive, netting two goals, maximum bonus and a whopping four big chances. The Senegalese winger was a constant threat down Watford’s right, and now takes on a shaky Newcastle United backline that has conceded 13 goals and 17 big chances this season, and also ranks bottom for expected goals conceded (xGC)

Given that two of Watford’s strikes came from deliveries from the right last weekend, Andros Townsend (£5.4m) could be in for a big haul against Norwich this week. The Canaries have conceded 14 goals across their opening five Premier League matches, while Townsend has impressed since his summer move, providing three attacking returns and sitting top amongst team-mates for xA.

FORWARDS

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 3? 8

Since his return to Old Trafford last month, Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) has scored an impressive four goals in three appearances in all competitions. His 13 Premier League goal attempts, 12 shots in the box, five big chances and 3.24 expected goals (xG) are all league-leading totals since Gameweek 4, while this weekend’s opponents, Aston Villa, have been inconsistent so far. The Villans notoriously struggle against Man Utd, and despite improvements since switching to a 3-5-2 formation, the Portuguese’ movement and clever positioning could make it another difficult trip for Dean Smith’s side.

Leicester City have had a challenging start to the season, losing three of their opening five Premier League matches, but that hasn’t stopped Jamie Vardy (£10.4m) from producing. The Foxes no. 9 has scored three goals and provided an assist so far, and as a result, is the second top-scoring forward on 29 FPL points. Next up is a favourable home fixture against Burnley, with Sean Dyche’s side still searching for their first win and importantly for Vardy, are without a clean sheet in 2021/22.

Michail Antonio (£7.9m) has scored five goals in as many matches in all competitions this season, and despite missing Gameweek 5 through suspension, is still well clear at the top of the FPL forwards’ points table. He is first among players in his position for goals scored, attempts, shots in the box, efforts on target, big chances and penalty box touches, and will fancy his chances against Leeds United this weekend, for the reasons outlined above. It’s also worth noting that Marcelo Bielsa’s troops have given up a massive 32 chances from the centre of the pitch so far this season, more than any other side.

THE CAPTAIN

We choose the Scout Picks captain using a four-way vote between our Scout Squad pundits.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Each week, one of the Fantasy Football Scout community takes on the Scout Picks by pitting their chosen XI against ours.

The community member who beats our team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Moderators and Contributors League for the following season.

BobMcMayday, who triumphed 74-68 in Gameweek 4, has set the target to beat.

Our champion this week is Pirlo’s Pen, who has gone for a 3-4-3 of: Schmeichel, Alonso, Robertson, Pereira, Townsend, Mane, Bowen, Fornals,
Vardy, Antonio (c), Rondon.

The Scout Picks are 4-1 up on the community this season.

Personally feel he's less likely to do well if he's carrying a knock but with the rest of the team news and playing previously with said knock i feel he'll play.

Bit of a guessing game, but any thoughts ?

Agree on Podence could take spot.

But for me, in pure fantasy terms, both should be well away from teams!

Unless a really cheap non-player, I spose, yeah.

Time could come for both, guess it's getting there at the right time, which I guess is what you're getting at.

    Subs: Steele, Christensen, Marcal, Street

Used 1 FT to bring in Sarr for Raphinha. Have 1.2 ITB

Now that Tuchel has just confirmed that Mount will be out this week, do I sell him or keep him?

Ronaldo most likely to be over 100%EO. If you genuinely think Antonio can outscore Ronaldo then do it

My thinking is i cant really separate Ronny and Antonio as captaincy options, so the EO decides it for me as even if you dont captain Antonio, i doubt his EO will be over 100% and you can still gain rank if he hauls and you captained Ronaldo. If ronaldo hauls and you captain Antonio, you lose rank.

Can you (or someone) explain effective ownership to me please? (I'm all right at maths, but that was many years ago at GCSE, no doubt I'm behind now)

So basically, every player you own you have an effective ownership of 100%, you own that player's points 100% of the time. The player you captain you get 200% of, because you double his points for that week.

If a player has an effective ownership of 50% in say the top 10k, that means half of the top 10k owns that player (if no one captained that player). If you have this player and he scores 10 points, that means you effectively gain 5 points on the top 10k, rising rank in result, as the top 10K would only effectively gain 5 points as a whole.

When a player's EO rises over 100% to say 150%, that means a ton of managers captained this player, meaning loads of people are getting 200% of this player's points. So if you didnt captain this player and he scores 10 points, you will lose rank as you only get 10 points and top 10k managers effectively gained 15 points, on average.

So the whole thing is predicated upon aligning to the top 10k?

Also, if you get a big score overall it's just a side-stat? Surely the very bottom line, every week, no matter any of this stuff, is the total score you get?

That could include your captain (regardless of effective onwnership) and any other high scorers that week?

            Also regardless of 'template'?

It's purely the score each week, then every week - am I wrong here, maths-wise?

no theres EO for every rank bracket on livefpl

no if you get a big score its a big score. But end of the day, a 100pt gw is better when the average score is 50, compared to when the average score is 90.

Template just means high owned players, EO comes more into play for captaincy as 200% compared to 100% normally is massive.

At the end of the day getting say 50 points is getting 50 points. Doesnt matter how you get there. You're just more likely to gain more rank if get a bigger score compared to the average. I dont use EO in much of my decision at all. Get the player you think will score points, its just more often than not those players are template. The way you gain rank effectively is by either picking the correct combination of template high owned players and getting captaincy right, or getting the correct differential players that no one has.

This is what I'm saying, isn't it? You can dice it up in many ways, including how much of an advantage against the average that your captain may or may not gain you, but bottom line is it's the number of points you score each week. Right?

Yep end of the day, its about the raw number of points you score. But whether that number is good or bad depends on the average, which is an amalgamation of the EO of players. If you score your personal best of 150 points in a single GW, thats amazing, but if everyone else scored 150, then relatively, its just the average.

                    This is what I thought.

                    Absolute basic mathematics.

I wanted to hear an adherent of EO explain the thinking.

As I thought, no offence, it's just a sideshow - or happy side-product - to/of getting points in the normal way.

lol yeah i guess, but i mean, theres different ways to get points. There's really no normal way to get points, its just picking players who you think will score. Some will be highly owned and some will be low owned. I just like how the math works out

When you say EO decides it for you? Do you mean the fear of Ronaldo hauling?
Before EO was such a thing or had any focus there were so many more maverick captaincy choices.
Instead now a lot of us go with the herd mentality not the person we think might actually score the most points.

Btw not at all having a go at you here just think it’s the opposite of the mantra “make fantasy fun again” 🙂

Fwiw I’m on the fence between Salah and Antonio this week as a non Ronaldo owner…

no, not the fear of hauling, more I cant pick who I think will score the most points. It's quite easy to say pick the player who you think will score more, but most of the time its a 50/50 in our eyes.

I honestly cant pick between Ronaldo and Antonio, so I guess the only differentiator I have left is EO. What I ideally want is for them to both haul, because I have both in my team, but theres 4 scenarios: both haul, 2x on blank and one haul, or both blank. if both haul, I ideally want to captain Antonio to gain max rank. If ronaldo blanks, I ideally want to captain antonio, but I still gain rank even if i dont, as EO is likely still below 100%. If ronaldo doesnt blank, then i would want to pick Ronaldo, but if dont pick ronaldo, I lose rank. Final scneario is a wash as both captaincy candidates blank.

Not sure if that makes sense, but to me 2/3 of the scenario i'm hoping for means rank rises if Ronaldo is the captain. If my gut says Antonio will score more points than Ronaldo, then I would be on it so fast, but I just dont know, cause I think Ronaldo has a chance to grab a few too. I just dont know, so falling back on the math

No, you are not falling back on the math. If you were you would increase variance by captaining the lower EO player in the event of a genuine 50/50 call.

What you are actually saying is that your fear of losing ground is greater than your desire to make ground.

My thoughts are Salah is most likely to score, Ronaldo most likely to haul and Antonio the biggest variance where it wouldn’t surprise if he blanked or hauled!

Tough one this week! Have all three strong candidates in my team. Leeds third worst team in the league for xG conceded (before the injuries!) vs. Brentford and Villa 2nd and 3rd best... but Ronaldo is Ronaldo and is at home.

Smile at the comment in the piece above about Palace Brighton derbies being cagey affairs to justify Duffy selection, Forgiveable not to watch the matches perhaps but a bit of instant research would show that it's very unusual for either side to come out with a nil in these fixtures.

Not a terrible choice given Palace frailty with set pieces just woeful justification.

I don’t think Palace v Brighton is a derby at all ? A rivalry has built up due to animosity but I wouldn’t call it a derby when they play because a derby is against your nearest rivals

Couldn't give a toss mate - was merely quoting the article above.

Very dull comment in any event and you appear to be supremely misinformed about how English works as a language.

salty lol - you cared enough to make a comment about it, analyse results and opine on Palace Brighton derbies and point out they are not nil nil results

The article doesn’t even call the game a derby, just says these ‘types of derby matches can be cagey affairs.’ which in fairness games between rivals can be. A ‘cagey affair’ doesn’t even mean 0-0 either and the article didn’t say the results have been 0-0 and as you have done your research you know there has only been a single goal difference at most (2-1, 1-0 etc) at the most the last 5 games between them.

Maybe it is you that appear to be confused about how English works as a language and perhaps should google ‘strawman argument’ 😉
