FanTeam Wildcard team reveal: Double City and Chelsea defence in a 4-3-3

Top FanTeam tips from 2020/21 champion and €200k winner Josh Wooldridge

The Gameweek 7 deadline is fast approaching and Wildcards are being deployed left, right and centre.

Here is a Wildcard draft I put together for one of my teams this week, that I am pretty set on. Interestingly, I think this is almost the exact team I would Wildcard to in Gameweek as well – so don’t worry if you are reading this after the Gameweek 7 deadline!

GOALKEEPERS

JOSE SA (WOLVES): At £4.6m, having just had a price rise, I think this is incredible value off the bat in the goalkeeper slot. Aaron Ramsdale was my other reasonable consideration, but I can’t ignore Sa’s fixtures all the way up to Gameweek 14.

JOHN RUDDY (WOLVES): Once I picked Sa, this is the easiest pick on the game for me. He’s very much Wolves’ number two goalkeeper, and compliments Sa perfectly. Hopefully, it stops me from having to make a keeper transfer too, even if something happens to Sa.

DEFENDERS

JOAO CANCELO (MANCHESTER CITY): Do we finally have a nailed Joao Cancelo? If we do I think he is extremely underpriced, even at £6.3m. The Liverpool fixture isn’t ideal this week, but from Gameweek 8 onwards I really like the short-term fixtures. Man City can keep a clean against anyone, and with favourable fixtures, the chance goes up even more.

RUBEN DIAS (MANCHESTER CITY): I am pairing Cancelo with Dias, in the light that Trent Alexander-Arnold is injured. This spot was originally going to the Liverpool man, but given that he could be out for a while, it is too long to be carrying an injured player for. Ruben Dias could score very well over the next few weeks, and is a favourite of Pep Guardiola’s.

MARCOS ALONSO (CHELSEA): This certainly isn’t a pick I thought I would be making on my Wildcard when Gameweek 1 started, but again Alonso has been almost an ever-present for Chelsea so far this term. He is extremely advanced, and is a key cog when Chelsea go forward. I love his price at £5.8m, but am very wary that rotation could happen. If you pick Alonso, I would advise a very strong bench.

CESAR AZPILICUETA (CHELSEA): Azpilicueta or Rudiger complete my starting defenders. I think it’s really close between the two, and comes down to personal preference. But given the fixtures Chelsea have over the next five Gameweeks, I think a double-up on the Chelsea defence could be extremely fruitful.

NELSON SEMEDO (WOLVES): Semedo completes my defence, again because of the aforementioned fixtures. Given that I will be playing a 4-3-3 most weeks, Semedo is likely to sit first or second sub, but certainly ready to come on when one of my starting XI doesn’t play (which I expect to be more than once over the next spell of games!)

MIDFIELDERS

MOHAMED SALAH (LIVERPOOL): An absolute certainty for me, probably for whenever I Wildcard. The Egyptian king is in the form of his life, and is my favoured early captain option for Gameweek 8. A must-have!

JAMES WARD-PROWSE (SOUTHAMPTON): Whilst starting with a tough game versus Chelsea in Gameweek 7, I can’t look past the next five after that for Ward-Prowse. He is also on all set pieces, including penalties, and is one of my favoured 90-minute men for the Saints. He will definitely be in my thoughts across my teams from Gameweek 7/8 onwards.

ISMAILA SARR (WATFORD): Sarr has been electric over the past few weeks, and has a really shaky-looking Leeds team this weekend! Sarr again fits the bill: nice and cheap at £6.2m, on penalties most likely, and usually gets the 90 minutes also. He also looks central to everything that Watford do going forward and I really like the look of him.

CHRISTIAN NORGAARD (BRENTFORD): Norgaard is my latest £4.5m midfielder of choice, after Billy Gilmour was benched last weekend and Yves Bissouma got injured. He has completed 90 minutes in five of the first six Gameweeks, so seems very reliable to just sit there on my bench and come on as and when needed.

ALLAN (EVERTON): As previously alluded to, I will be playing 4-3-3 on this Wildcard team, and so I need another budget midfielder. Out of the ones currently on offer, Allan seems to fit the bill nicely. He plays all the minutes for Everton, and has even chipped in with an assist or two recently. Just the kind of guy I want second or third on my bench to come on when required.

STRIKERS

CRISTIANO RONALDO (MANCHESTER UNITED): Now the team finally starts to get exciting. First up we have Ronaldo. I simply love his price at £11.5m, and think he will provide value throughout the season. He is a serious captaincy option for Gameweek 7, and then faces a Leicester side who haven’t started well in Gameweek 8.

ROMELU LUKAKU (CHELSEA): Someone I haven’t owned all season but decided I needed for this upcoming run of games! Lukaku is likely to get my armband this Gameweek, and looking ahead to Gameweeks 9, 10 and 11, he will be a serious option for me also. He has great fixtures and seems to have hit the ground running upon re-joining his former club.

MICHAIL ANTONIO (WEST HAM UNITED): Antonio completes my attack, and rightly so. The frontman has returned in all but one Gameweeks that he has played in so far this season, and is scoring goals for fun at the moment. At his price, I cannot see anyone around him having anywhere near his upside and he has started the season performing more like a £10m asset.

I hope you guys enjoyed hearing my reasoning for picking each slot.

The reason I have opted for 4-3-3 as opposed to my favoured ‘three at the back’ this time around is mainly because of the strength of the upcoming Man City and Chelsea fixtures. I think certainly over the next five, a Chelsea defender will outscore all of the budget fourth midfielders, for example. I also think that the extremely cheap midfield is worth it right now, given the value and potential provided by my three big hitters up top.

Please let me know what you think and good luck for the upcoming Gameweek everyone!

Depends who you already have, ESR or Kovacic are alright options, maybe even Dallas.

Dallas seems to be rotated between down back and midfield, last game he was midfield and one before that he was a kind of wing back. What he has going for him is the most minutes but I guess the points ceiling for the other two is higher. Personally I am not a massive fan of ESR and I am not sure if Kovacic is over performing so far but if he can keep up his form he may be the best pick, only issue with him is rotation

might pay to wait - for me the only 'concern' is the 2x City defenders - everyone else has a better or equal fixture to before.
i think i saved over 1.0m in the process - so for sure couldn't get this squad next week.

hope it pays off going a week early.

Their fixtures coming up are very mixed as is, and although they are one of the better sides defensively, there's a chance the City lads will outscore him anyways. Going without may be a big differential. The Son pick interests me, you think Spurs can turn it around offensively?

I’m giving him a couple of weeks.
Could see him becoming Mount, Pulisic, Foden or Grealish.
Or if KDB bangs then Son > KDB is possible with downgrading Jimenez.

But hope Son goes well of course. He’s still scoring while Spurs have been weird. Their fixtures get good and maybe Kane is slowly turning a corner.

His fixtures are good, especially from gw12 onwards. I owned him start of the season and whilst him scoring the sole goal in a 1-0 was good for his points it did begin to get frustrating after a while. But you're right, at his price range there's a lot you can do with him

If Alonso and Marcal are benched, you have an issue. Of lucky, they both start. You could take a -8 and put that money to use. I’m betting the hit could pay in the long term.

I think so, he has seemed to have nailed down the spot now and should've had 2 goals in 2 games. I just worry though that as soon as the fixtures start coming thick and fast that with Watford having such a deep squad (albeit not brimming with all stars) there might be rotation up top. He might be on penalties as well but that is up in the air. Dennis for a little less is a good option also, he is wider but still shoots a lot, think he ranked one of the highest for last gw. Only issue with the two is fixtures

Poor form for Marcal, Ait Nouri being a capable back up. I was watching the Brentford Wolves game and Marcal couldn't even make a 10 yard pass down the sideline

I still have not owned one Wolves asset and won't until they start scoring goals. You only win matches by scoring and only 2 goals scored leaves you in deep poo.

Think it's unlikely Silva will play after playing full game against City and Juve. Similarly Alonso looked leggy and subbed midweek, with Chilwell looking raring to go. Rudiger safest pick imo with truly free transfer prior to wildcard. As it's for just one game, with WC to be played a Burnley defender could be good differential for this GW!

Thanks a bunch. Will look into Burnley defense.
How about doubling Chelsea defense rather than change in mf:
        TAA+ Dier > Rudigar + Azpi

With James out Azpi almost certain to play if fit, as only other possible RWB is CHO, and Tuchel will want him protected defensively. My guess "back 5" will be Azpi, Chalobah, Christensen, Rudiger, Chilwell, but it's getting hard to tell, and I guess always possible one day he will try 433!

    Ramsdale X
    Liv Rudi X X X
    Salah Raph Luiz X X
    Ant Lukaku X

    A) Mccarthy Dias Cancelo Azpi (cash for TAA) Saka Benr Toney
    B) (Ron 433) Foster Christensen Walker Laporte Mbeumo Brownhill Ronaldo
    C) (Ron 343) Foster Laporte Duffy Lowton ESR Benr Ronaldo

    Lukaku Antonio Jimenez

    bench: Foster, Cancelo, Brownhill, WIlliams.

Really can't seem to find that extra 0.2 to swap Williams for Livramento. Any thoughts? Keen to get some differentials as I am chasing in my mini leagues with every WC team containing Ramsdale Salah Lukaku(c) Antonio double Chelsea & City defence.

It really boils down to ESR or Saka, Jimenez + Son or Vardy + Grealish/some mid price MF. What you boys think? Appreciate your time and effort!

Need to bench one of Mbeumo ( West Ham away ), saka ( BHA away ) and Gallagher ( LEI home ).

    No clue 🙁

      Bench Gallagher I think.
Least advanced of the 3 - Leicester are probably the better defense?

For sure start Mbeumo I think.

Wanted to wait to use WC until after Int break but not sure if I should just do it now, should I ?

    A) Stick
    B) -4 Jota>Raphina or Shaw/TAA>Azpil (Already used 1FT Ayling>Rudiger)
    C) WC now

That pundit's team in the above article looks hopelessly underdone. Relying on clean sheets is always a dicey affair and he has gone without any midpark sans Salah.

I thought it was for some Sky version of the game where based on different scoring system some of these guys could be good. Don’t understand it. Triple big hitters destroys a team balance. Says the guy advocating a 523 below 🙂

Not to mention he thinks Sa is 4.6 when he is actually 5.0!

Or does the fan team get a discount? 🙂

    WC in GW8
    2FT, 0ITB

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Coufal Semedo Dier Veltman
    Salah Bruno Greenwood Raphinha Allan
    Ings Antonio Toney

What are the two most pressing issues in the team above to resolve utilizing 2FTs before WC next week?

      • 14 Years

If you are using your WC next week then you might as well have some one week punts a la Scout Picks.

      Bruno->Raphinia
      Ings/Toney-> Lukaku/Ronaldo

Thanks. Raphinha is already there, could be Benrahma. I was thinking similar before TAA flag. With TAA confirmed out, I'm tilted towards getting Chelsea defense.

I would probably take a hit and punt on 3 changes
TAA and Coufal to 2 * Chelsea defenders and Ings to Jimenez.

Thanks. Looking into doubling Chelsea defense. Jimenez looks like a good option but I'll not do it for a hit against Ings.

Just throwing this out there for anyone on a WC before GW8
I can just afford this maybe weird 523 formation with triple city and Chelsea, double Liverpool, Antonio and Raphina. Some risks with Alonso Laporte Cancelo and even Jesus but I like it. Any thoughts on it ?

    Ramsdale

    TAA Alonso Rudiger Cancelo Laporte

    Salah Raphina

    Lukaku Antonio Jesus

    Steele ESR Luiz Bissouma

        338 moved up from 324
For adding 2 city mids I don’t have now and Jesus in over Jimenez that I have now.
Also when we factor in RMT would rate pool and city low for this week it would be interesting to see what RMT says from GW8 on.

Front 3 would look better having DCL instead of Jesus.

I do not know if Raphina is the right player to have in as the second mid.

You need a player capable of double digit hauls for that 2nd spot.

Good points. The last years I have really like 5 good mids so this seems alien to me and I understand your point on the second mid spot. Raphina really is a talent though. More of a concern now is the niggle injuries he seems to be carrying.
I also agree Jesus spot has so much competition it could easily be DCL Bamford etc both of whom I had before injuries.
That Jesus spot is the one I would probably change rather than trying to have 8 players from the top 3 teams just for the sake of it 🙂

Azpi because he's a good differential.

Curtis Jones has looked the real deal recently. A decent cheap fantasy punt too at £5m? 4 shots last week in 67 minutes. Looked excellent against Porto with plenty of attacking influence. It looks as though his midfield spot is his to lose at the moment?

    G2G?

    Ramsdale
    Rudiger-Tierney-Semedo
    Salah-Greenwood-Brahma-Raphinha
    Ronaldo(c)-Antonio-Jimenez

    Sanchez,Gray, Williams, Livramento

Stil got 1 FT left and 1.8 itb.i was thinking should i do Ronaldo to Lukaku also this week or just go with this?
