Who are the best Man City FPL attackers for their Gameweek 8 fixture swing?

Manchester City have had an encouraging start to their 2021/22 campaign, despite a tough run of fixtures which has seen them visit Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

During their opening seven Premier League matches, they have netted 14 goals, and given their forthcoming schedule (see below), it’s easy to see why many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are scouting their assets ahead of Gameweek 8.

With Etihad encounters against Burnley and Crystal Palace in the next three, plus a trip to high-flying Brighton and Hove Albion – a side who they have traditionally done well against under Pep Guardiola – the upside is clearly huge.

However, nailing down a regular starting attacker isn’t straightforward. Looking at City’s two most recent Premier League matches against Liverpool and Chelsea, their ‘strongest’ XI probably looks something like this:

Ederson; Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo; Rodri, Bernardo, De Bruyne; Jesus, Grealish, Foden

That will of course change as the season progresses, and we have seen before just how quickly the landscape can change. Only a few weeks ago, Ferran Torres (£6.9m) was of huge Fantasy interest but has now failed to feature since Gameweek 4, while Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m) – a popular pre-season pick – hasn’t started a single Premier League match since the opening day.

Manchester City’s 2021/22 Premier League line-ups and minutes

It’s also worth noting that for their forthcoming run of fixtures, Guardiola will probably look to use his full squad, and perhaps be less reliant on that ‘strongest’ XI.

The rotation is further complicated by two important UEFA Champions League clashes against Club Brugge, which have taken on extra significance following defeat at Paris Saint-Germain in Matchday 2. The first fixture, which takes place in Belgium, arrives just three days after Burnley, while the return match is four days after Crystal Palace’s visit in Gameweek 10.

There is also an EFL Cup trip to West Ham United to navigate after that latter match, but given that fringe players will surely be given a run-out here, if anything, it’s probably a positive for FPL managers.

Regardless of that, the schedule does suggest some rotation, which is why we have some big decisions to make ahead of Gameweek 8. So, before we give a player-by-player assessment of the main contenders, it goes without saying that if you do choose to invest, additional squad depth is definitely advisable.

I think he 'suits' how Chelsea play. He's not a good enough player to be 'key'.

He was very good against Spurs but Arsenal also put 3 past Spurs. I wouldn't be using that as a main gauge. He wasn't great against City and was worse against Juventus and Tuchel seems like he might have had enough of him for a while

Not for me. If going down that route, why not Chilwell over Alonso? Seems to be the preferred LWB and played well in the last league game

I disagree that he is the preferred LWB.

Tuchel clearly loves Alonso and gets frustrated every time Chilwell plays.

People quickly forget Alonso has played all but one game

He was poor in the City game, subbed off early in the UCL and benched for the Soton game. Maybe preferred wasn't the correct word to use but it doesn't seem likely he will be starting in any of the upcoming fixtures

Interesting topic of Alonso vs Chilwell.

I believe Alonso still the preferred choice by Tuchel. People say Chilwell started last game, but I said this game is not for all starters, so you can see Chalobah and Werner starting as well. This game is not good for reference.

Agree with you here. Poor against City/Juve doesnt dictate otherwise, they're good teams and he wasn't the only one who was sub-par in those games.

As a previous Bachmann owner, I would not advise going with Bachmann until we see The Tinkerman improve Watford's defence. Also, Watford missing their key CB in Sierralta through injury.

With DCL and Rich due back after the IB, I think Townsend becomes less appealing. More assisting than scoring. Gray will either play #10 (4231) or LM/LW (442 - Rich up top). Gray probably edges it since he has the chance to play #10

    My team:

    Sanchez, Ramsdale
    TAA, Tierney, Christensen, Marcal, Livramento
Raphinha, Salah, Gray, Sarr, Sancho(Sancho sounds silly, but it was drawn in my mini-league that I have to keep Sancho all the year.)
    Lukaku, Jimenez, Armstrong

my plan at the beginning of the season was to set the wildcard this gameweek, however i think it's not necessary to do this.
I would only make this transfer:
    Sarr - Mbeumo.

    Suggestions?

I would delay the Sarr to Mbeumo move until GW9. Sarr playing against Liverpool who will be without Alisson and Fabinho and new manager bounce. Also Mbeumo have a tough fixture v Chelsea. Probably roll FT

Looking into it a bit more, it seems Luiz is a late call up and bench cover for Casemiro. Left on the bench for the 1st game. If he doesn't play any mins in the last game which is 36 hours until the Sat 3pm KO at home game v Wolves, there is a slight chance he could get a game but unlikely at the moment.

I think Rudiger and Lukaku to be fine for GW8. We need to wait and see on TAA. Raphinha in the same boat as Luiz. Not looking good for Jota based on the latest injury info and Firmino didn't travel with Brazil. Wolves confirmed on their official twitter page he will be back in time for the PL game. Mexico last game is Thurs 3:05am UK time and Wolves play Villa on Sat 3pm away to Villa. I think that is sufficient time for him to be available for selection if travel arrangements are in place.

Pep sticks with his CB's long term until one makes a big mistake, without meaningless rotation game to game, as evidenced last season and this.
TT rotates Chilly and Alonso depending on the flip of a coin.
I'd go Laporte, strengthened by its then easier to downgrade to 5.3 Stones when it's his turn for the run of games.
Plus Man City's defensive numbers are better that Chelsea's.
