Martinelli’s form, Covid latest, Tomiyasu injury news: FPL Gameweek 18 review

Arsenal breezed past sorry Leeds United in the only Gameweek 18 match of the day to survive a postponement.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

MARVELLOUS MARTINELLI

The Emile Smith Rowe (£6.0m) train just about keeps chugging along, with back-to-back goals helping to gloss over three successive benchings, but a separate budget Arsenal bandwagon is gathering momentum.

A Smith Rowe injury ahead of Gameweek 15 paved the way for Gabriel Martinelli (£5.2m) to establish himself on the Gunners’ left flank and the young Brazilian has effectively kept his teammate out of the side ever since, although alternative routes back into the starting XI at least do exist for Smith Rowe.

Martinelli made it six attacking returns in as many Gameweeks at Elland Road and while he’ll not sustain an average of 7.0 points per match over the season (he scored from his only two shots of the match on Saturday), he’s keeping company with some big midfielders on the underlying stats front over his last half-dozen appearances:

Above: FPL midfielders sorted by expected goal involvement (xGI) over their last six matches

Martinelli has historically posted some good numbers (he had the best rate of xGI among Arsenal players last season) but the issue with the budget midfielder has always been game-time, which he now has for the time being.

Bukayo Saka (£6.2m), Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) and Smith Rowe also chipped in with attacking returns against Leeds, too, but spurned big chances from the French striker in particular left a feeling of ‘what might have been’ for owners of the Gunners’ other attacking assets.

Unsurprisingly, Martinelli is now the most-bought player of Gameweek 19.

If you’re thinking about joining his growing band of owners, first consider that Arsenal’s Boxing Day opponents are Norwich City, a side whose Gameweek 18 fixture was called off on Thursday because of a coronavirus outbreak among the squad – and a 10-day isolation period would just about cover Gameweek 19 as a result. That fixture, then, must be in some doubt.

LEEDS DEFENCE A MESS… AND LIVERPOOL UP NEXT

Having started last season looking shifty (the fourth letter can be interchanged for another consonant) at the back but showing signs of improvement as the campaign went on, Leeds have come full circle.

Marcelo Bielsa’s troops have now shipped 16 goals in their last four Premier League matches and as many big chances – both, unsurprisingly, are league-worst totals.

Above: Premier League defences sorted by shots on target conceded over their last four matches

They allowed 11 shots on target in the first half of the loss to Arsenal alone, a record in the Opta era.

The absurd injury crisis is a huge contributing factor, of course. In the defence in Gameweek 18 were centre-halves Luke Ayling (£4.3m) and Robin Koch (£4.3m), better at right-back and in front of the back four, and Cody Drameh (£3.9m), barely out of his teens. Unavailability further forward was just as key: 10 first-teamers were sidelined in total, while Jack Harrison (£5.6m) limped off after half an hour.

Whether or not any Gameweek 19 fixtures go ahead is another question but if Leeds do make it to kick-off on Boxing Day having swerved a postponement, their next opponents are the Premier League’s top-scoring side, Liverpool.

RAPHINHA AT LEAST SECOND ON PENS

Raphinha (£6.6m) seems to be at least second in command in the Leeds United penalty-taking pecking order.

The Brazilian had scored twice from the spot already this season but both Patrick Bamford (£7.7m) and Mateusz Klich (£5.2m), the Whites’ primary takers in 2020/21, were off the field in those instances.

Klich was on the pitch for the Brazilian’s latest success from 12 yards this evening, however, an emphatic effort that moved him onto eight goals for the season – a total that only two FPL midfielders can better.

Budget FPL forward Joe Gelhardt (£4.6m) bagged the assist for the penalty, his second return in three Gameweeks.

COVID WATCH AND INJURY LATEST

Smith Rowe on bench as unchanged Arsenal face injury-hit Leeds

Nine Leeds players were known as being unavailable going into this match but a 10th, Diego Llorente (£4.5m), also didn’t show up. It was later revealed that the centre-back had tested positive for Covid-19, and he will now sit out Gameweek 19 as a result.

Arsenal also have their first cases of Covid-19 in a while, with Albert Sambi Lokonga (£4.8m) and Pablo Mari (£4.2m) contracting the illness.

The Gunners shut their training ground as a precaution on Thursday but returned thereafter.

“We had another player, as well, Pablo has Covid, so unfortunately they [Mari and Lokonga] will be out.” – Mikel Arteta

Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.7m) banked a clean sheet for his owners before limping from the field of play but Arteta wasn’t too concerned after the game.

“It was more a muscular issue. He’s got a big load on him, he’s played every single minute since he joined us and this week he’s been a bit struggling. We decided to take him off. He wasn’t 100% confident to finish the match and hopefully he’s not injured.” – Mikel Arteta

Bielsa gave an update on the limping Harrison after full-time, as well as some of his other absent players:

“It’s just a big knock [for Harrison], a very painful one just below his hip. It’s just knocks that prevent you from continuing to play, but they’re not injuries that take long to recover from. What was, was that he was on the pitch for thirty minutes where he really couldn’t play. Until the player convinces himself that he can’t play there are moments where he can’t do anything.

“Cooper has a long period of recovery, Phillips has a long period of recovery. Cresswell has a long period of recovery, Bamford and James no – they’re not that long but I can’t tell you if they’re going to be available for Liverpool. Rodrigo Moreno has a problem in his heels and this has made him inactive in the past two weeks. The way to heal or cure this injury is to manage the pain so it disappears.

“The injury of Rodrigo is something that’s not very frequent. In Pascal’s case in the Premier League you have this injury once or twice a season, it also demands the pain disappears for him to be able to play. With respect to Rodrigo he’s not going to play against Liverpool and Pascal I place him on the same range as Bamford and James. They are all subject to the evolution, I never not give up information that I possess. What I try to avoid is to not say something I’m not sure of. I take advantage when I made a reference to the operation of Phillips – I thought you were talking about the possible surgery to his shoulder, and the expression that was understood, perhaps I expressed myself wrong. I didn’t know whether he was operated under on the back part of his knee.” – Marcelo Bielsa

We need more transparency, which players have Covid and when will they be back. Some teams are honest but others just shut-up.

Strangely not a privacy thing in American or Australian sports.

I think it’s that the clubs call the shots and err towards not being accountable or transparent.

Yes as an Aussie this is correct.
And there's absolutely no problem. Everyone just accepts it, like cmon, it's Covid. That's the times we are living in.

        No, he's right.
You can't tell me there aren't clubs questioning the legitimacy.
A postponement of a fixture is now an advantageous method for clubs that may have a number of bodies out.

If Bielsa was a more dishonest sort of man. He could have claimed Covid for Leeds. But he didn’t and had a 15 year old on the bench.

There's a mechanism through which Premier League verifies the number of covid positive + members of squad available. So you can't just 'claim' covid

I think some of the clubs are taking advantage of the rules to get a rest in this congested period. Fair enough, it can't go on though, it is specific to this point in time. You can only do it once too. There aren't enough spaces in the season to play the postponed games otherwise. The clubs are in the business of playing football games and if they can't do that what use are they? I think the League will play hard ball and tell them to sort their protocols out so they can field a team or forfeit

Most of the PL clubs could easily play 4 postponed matches from new year and before season ends. It gets tricky when/if especially Pool, City & Chelsea is part of the equation. The rest playing international can’t have too many aswell.

Somebody please help me understand this, why is an already injury depleted Leeds squad, who now also have 10 positive covid cases amongst the squad forced to play, yet teams who I am sure have less cases are allowed to have their games postponed? Am I off on this or does it not make much sense

    1. Gabbiadini
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 4 days ago

I'm sure with Leeds' current situation there would have been many clubs desperate for a postponement, put in the same position. Maybe they were themselves, who knows.
Although it could be a mentality thing, that they didn't want the game off, which I respect.

      1. Gabbiadini
        • 7 Years

Also playing now gives them less congestion down the line, which should go in their favour. Especially the way they play.

        1. Thomas Magnum
          • 9 Years
          3 years, 4 days ago

You're probably right about the mentality thing, and I agree with it being better now than congestion later. And I should probably clarify, I am all for the games going ahead presuming they can field enough players, if they can get a mix of first teamers, u21's or even u18's out then go ahead. But it just seems to me there isn't an even playing field when you have some teams with only a few cases getting games called off and one with 10 cases and playing, but if they wanted to play it then I have to respect it

As long as it is fair and as even as it can be for all clubs then it's fine, but if some teams are allowed postponments and not others then it would be disappointing. Just can't wrap my head around how the vast majority of clubs all got hit with covid around the same time, crazy

I read the article twice and it was nowhere mentioned that Leeds have 10 players with covid. Also read elsewhere that Bielsa himself said they are 'unlucky' that the majority of players are sidelined because of injury or suspension which doesn't qualify Leeds to postpone games

You are right, I misinterpreted the article because they wrote about 10 players out and covid next to each other I misread it. This has helped clarify my point in the OP now more though so thanks. So basically injury or suspension you still play but if you have x amount of covid cases then it probably means you can get a postponement

Without knowing at all I think PL are most interessed in having City, Liverpool & Chelsea to play each GW due to the fact, that they could/should go far in UCL and in the national cups which make it much harder to find a spot to play postponed fixtures.

Leeds are just unlucky that they’re lucky to have so little Covid going around combined with them facing Gunners in same position, but without injuries.

Not really sure what my point is.
I guess Liverpool, City and the Man U fixtures are most likely to go ahead in next GW due to current info.
Chelsea in threat due to Villa outbreak.
The rest of the matches could ‘easier’ be played out in a UCL midweek.

Yes, I think you are right. The top clubs have zero interest in postponed games. It just creates a nightmare for them later in the season. Also they are playing well and have deep squads so want to capitalise on the weakness of others

Yes. And a ‘couple’ of postponed matches for those clubs would require them to more or less lose on purpose in a national cup just to make room for those postponed matches. EPL are not interested in that - would look like bad planned season calender.

If the guus like Phillips, Cooper, bamford is coming back then a full Leeds 11 with fewer games could be a very tough opponent and thus gives them a better chance of points, As they are definitive out now Leeds might think its best to just play some games and to be fair, maybe just get City, arsenal and Liverpool out of their way is a good thing, could lost anyway to those team regardless of who played

Deadline was at midnight for me last night, I was going to set my alarm to make my transfers but thought I’d be fine doing them at 10.30pm before going to sleep, literally moments later whilst I was zzzzzzz the Villa game got postponed, and my Antonio >> Watkins blanked.

Morale of the story, never sleep during a deadline…

Ever since the introduction of the 1.5 hour before K.O lockout was introduced I have always struggled with the 8pm AEST lockout on Saturdays for the 9:30 kick offs, I hate making transfers early but always seem to be busy around lockout

I got in Martinez and Watkins for a -8 at what I thought was the last moment for me in NZ, the time difference and the need to sleep makes it hard to play the game on level terms.

        Spot on.
I brought Cash in for a -4 for Livramento when I didn't need to, my other trades Laca and ESR so favourable there.

To be honest I would've potentially taken a hit to bring him in anyway, in two weeks so not all terrible.

I missed the deadline, was going to bring in Rapha & Laca at the last moment for free … school boy error that has cost me 12 points 🙂

I also burned a transfer just to add to the pain

However onwards and upwards, two free transfers this week to bring in some players just before the deadline again 🙂

Right thanks. Bit annoying signed ESR for 5.3 lots of tied up value. He can’t keep doing the super sub goal thing. Sort of hoping Arsenal v Norwich postponed so ESR could force his way back in training.

I would t worry about having ‘money tied up’ in him. He’s a great 8’th attacker at that price if you want to keep him or he’s made you a few Bob if you chose to upgrade. Over Christmas I’d expect him to be rotated in a bit more. Also see if he plays in the cup midweek.

Personally I’ll be moving on but he is the least of my worries just now

its a tough one, imo i think Arsenal play better with Odegaarg as the number 10, he keeps it simple and moves the ball quicker and can pick a pass Ozil style, and Martinelli is clearly a more natural left winger although ESR is good in that role too

Things never stay the same but the whole team is happy now so why rock the boat? Maybe a bus parking Norwich will spark a tactical change, though. Martinelli's runs in behind aren't going to happen against a low block, for instance, no space

To fill in 5 positions, Pep has got 8 choices:
Jesus, Sterling, KDB, Gundogan, Foden, Silva, Mahrez, Grealish.
He'd have to bench at least 3 of the above lot in each game.

Wanted to change Jesus out for Foden 4 weeks ago but between injuries and Covid I cant get it done. Seems like two luxury transfer right now.

The point would be to try and make contacts less. And there's no point in going on as normal either, if out of 10 games only less then half happen. This GW it's down to 4 even and it might be even less. So basicly the GW18 is almost postponed entirely anyways. Only it happened in some cases at the last minute, which I guess is costlier then postponing them earlier.

            2. Casual Player
              • 4 Years

Well yeah the idea would be to minimise contacts. Other sports have these kind of bubbles where there clubs/leagues demand they don’t do a bunch of stuff normal people do to minimise COViD. That would be the point of a pause.

i've no idea, clubs will vote for their own selfish reasons, for example clubs currently struggling with injuries and covid will push to postpone, clubs doing relatively ok will want to play on, and Newcastle will almost certainly ask for a postponement until January because then they can buy a better team

They can't put it on hold. The big teams have the power and the last thing they will want is fixture congestion at a time UCL is so important, and prem race is so close. It'll just be laid out, how many cases, etc, timeframes, etc.. but games will be played when possible. Also protocols as regards players isolating until afte winter peak. Stricter enforcement by the clubs.

There is no leeway to play games later in the season. They can't put the League on hold unless something like the FA cup gets canned. Cancelling Boxing Day fixtures would be a huge deal. Biggest games of the year for fans. I think they will put it to the clubs that its on them to step up

At some point, if they can't field a team they forfeit. That should focus a few minds

It super strange to me how lax they clubs have been over this. They pay these guys 10s of 1000s per week and seemed to not fussed about COVID management. If a club managed the risk of physical injuries like this, it would be considered negligent.

I got murdered here yesterday for suggesting that professional players should really be 'minding' themselves from Covid. Restrict movements between family and training ground/matches during peak transmission Winter period. As an employer paying these kind of wages I'd expect the player to take personal responsibility for their fitness. Isolate for Gods sake. They have enough socialising with family and training ground banter.

It’s a no brainer to me. Other sports leagues have done bubbles and had tighter rules on movements and interactions for their players/staff than required for the rest of society..

The funny thing is I reckon if clubs told most players to chill in an oxygen tent for 6 hours then take a cows blood transfusion to prevent muscle injuries, they’d do it without a second guess.

But you can’t ask them to not get out and about, apparently.

I went back and read your posts, and agree 100%.

What you proposed has been normal in Australian sports. One rugby league team, normally based in New Zealand, basically has housed their team in Australia for two seasons. The first year they left their families in NZ for five months.
A few players from other teams in 2020 (rules eased in 2021) were fined for going to a cafe during the bubble, not allowed to eat out you see. These are professional athletes, but paid a fraction of EPL players wages.

Yeh the QLD bubble actually worked quite well for NRL AFL (non apologetic Roosters fan here).
I know they did the same for the NBA as well but vax rates in America are much lower and a significantly higher population. They are having players sit out for 10-14 days on a daily basis as they fly across the country.
Even Pat Cummins (Aussie cricket captain for this who don’t know) had to skip the second test and isolate this week.

The ludicrous money involved in football, in terms of wages and matchday tickets/broadcast means it’s being treated equally as a “business” decision.

Having previously had Covid, or having had two vaccine doses, does not necessarily protect you against the Omicron variant, research has shown, with the variant found to largely evade immunity worked up in both cases.

Two doses yes, prior infection on its own doesn’t look great but prior infection ‘plus’ vaccination of some kind looks a bit more solid … the studies so far are more statistical than real world data.

I think with so many players catching Covid now, and then being booster or even having their first jab, then they are safer going forward … just not too sure how much safer

I remember having some grey haired defender from Cardiff a few seasons back, I think he went as low as 3.7m

McNaughton! There were a few Reading defenders at that price too, Harte and Gorkss iirc.

#ManCity are ready to ‘rocket’ Bernardo Silva alongside the highest earners in their history to keep him at the club - almost doubling his salary to around £300,000-a-week. A fresh contract could even see Silva sign beyond 2025.

They could create some breathing space by postponing the EFL quarters, changing the semis from 2 legged to 1 legged matches, and pushing the final to the end of the season. That should free up at a blank gameweek for the finalist later down the line, give everyone the chance to isolate this week and hopefully limit the impact to the Nation's League

I have Odegaard, ESR and Ramsdale.

I don’t really want to sell either mid but I do think I should get martinelli. Which one would you sell?

So is Martinelli now secured a starting place each week, I have my first WC still to use, is it worth bringing him in?

        He's established himself, yes

Having said that, Norwich up next could be the sort of team he gets rested for. His speed and running in behind is of less use against a team that sits deep

Martinelli competing with ESR for a place, though possibly also with Lacazette

I love Laca but yesterday he didn’t impress me at all. He played like Kane

Hopefully this; for the next GW anyway. Both Laca and Martinelli seem to struggle to complete 90 though so I can see ESR completing the most minutes. My team is sharing time in the City department so I am not sure I can have an Arsenal "risk" going forward.

Agree on that, and i think also because he offers something the other players font, in his timing of press, his good link up play etc.

It's such an amazing problem for Arteta to have. Do I pick ESR/Martinelli.. abundant of world class young attacking talent at Arsenal. Buy the right striker and another midfield enforcer and they are set for a decade to come.

I'm 0.1m short of the switch back at the moment but with Antonio's price likely to drop it may be on for me.

I definitely went through a kneejerk moment this weekend. I took a minus 12, not so much with the intention to fill my blanks but thinking forward. I thought I could not be around Saturday so I made my tfr's Friday night. Watkins hurt because he was an in and an out. (Already -4) I wanted to move Benteke and and get a Foden so this was not Kneejerk. Now I am on Laca with rotation at risk; a 1 point gain with more to come I hope. Getting a playing keeper (Ramsdale) cost a couple of points but can pay in the end.
This story must be familiar to many but how many took the opportunity to tie in a tfr you wanted to do with one eye on the future, or did you mess up like me?

I had two frees. I did CR7 to Watkins and Sissoko to (F)oden. Really annoyed about Watkins, I did it just before the cancellation. But I would definitely rather have Watkins than Laka going forward.

Then I did two minus 4s, Guaita for Ramsdale and Gallagher for Saka. 9 points total so up on the deal, and two players I am happy with going forward.

With Lukaku getting Covid I took the chance to go early on KdB. Also got Lacazette as part of the move as has loads in the bank. The best move I made though was my hit for Martinelli despite having enough to funds to go Saka etc.
Having a shocker of a season but made some nice moves this week:
Lukaku + Gallagher + Gilmour to Lacazette + KdB + Martinelli
