Squad steps up as Robertson maintains fine form: FPL notes from Liverpool v Brentford

Liverpool cruised to a 3-0 win over Brentford in Double Gameweek 22, thanks to goals from Fabinho (£5.4m), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£5.8m) and Takumi Minamino (£5.1m).

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

LIVERPOOL FIND A WAY WITHOUT SALAH AND MANE

At least one of Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) or Sadio Mane (£11.7m) has played in all 172 of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures since the Egyptian joined the club in the summer of 2017.

However, against Brentford on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp had to make-do without both of his star forwards due to their involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and in their absence, turned to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£5.8m), who featured on the right of the Reds’ front three.

Above: Liverpool’s average position map v Brentford in Double Gameweek 22, featuring no. 15 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Despite being without Salah and Mane, Liverpool’s squad stepped up, as six different players scored or assisted, including full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m).

Notably, the latter is averaging over 7.5 points per match over his last seven starts, producing a goal, five assists and 10 bonus points, which suggests he can rival Jota for the third Reds’ spot in our FPL squads even once everyone is back.

MetricTotalRank v other Premier League defenders
Assists41st
Big chances created31st=
Created chances162nd

However, it was a day to forget for Diojo Jota’s (£8.4m) owners, as the Portuguese was hooked after 82 minutes to avoid injury and produced just three FPL points, despite hitting the post and racking up six shots in the box.

Discussing his missing stars – plus Oxlade-Chamberlain who was taken off injured in the second-half – Jurgen Klopp said:

“It’s completely normal. We knew it would happen when the boys went away. It’s really helpful the result today to calm these discussions down a little bit. You’re right, I understand the thoughts behind it but they are not here so we don’t talk about the boys who are not in. We find ways to break the opponents down. We wish the boys in Africa the best of luck. We were celebrating when Mo (Salah) scored last night and Sadio (Mane) the other day. We wish all of them to win the tournament which unfortunately isn’t impossible.” – Jurgen Klopp on coping without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane

“He was really good, but that’s a shadow on the game (and) we don’t know yet. He rolled his ankle and now we hope it’s nothing serious but we will get the further – or final – information (at the) earliest tomorrow, that’s how it is (with) these situations. It’s absolutely too early (to say), I have no idea. I don’t know.” – Jurgen Klopp on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

MORE AWAY DAY WOES FOR BRENTFORD

Following today’s 3-0 defeat at Anfield, Brentford have now conceded 19 goals in their last seven away matches, whilst across the season, only Norwich City, Southampton and Leeds United have allowed more than their 21.

BRENTFORD’S AWAY FORM:
OpponentScorexGC
Liverpool0-33.19
Southampton1-41.43
Brighton and Hove Albion0-21.01
Leeds United2-21.19
Tottenham Hotspur2-22.24
Newcastle United3-31.76
Burnley1-32.51

That could be good news for Manchester City, who host Brentford in Gameweek 24, with Pep Guardiola’s attacking assets attractive captaincy options that week.

Even more so if Egypt reach the latter stages of AFCON, with the final and third-place play-off taking place on February 6th, just four days before Liverpool are due to entertain Leicester City, which would surely cast Salah’s involvement into doubt.

“We were unbelievable in the first half against one of the best teams in the world. We kept them quiet. If we had gone to half time 0-0 it would have been a different story, but if we want to get points here we can’t concede from set pieces.

We had the chance with Bryan Mbuemo and then they came down the other end – fantastic cross, fantastic finish – and that killed the game.

Until the second goal, it showed if we keep our discipline, keep pressing, defend well in the low block, we can match some of the best.

This is a big occasion, playing in one of the most iconic places in the world, but you have to enjoy it for 30 seconds before the game is on and then you only really enjoy it if you win.” – Thomas Frank

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Jones, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Minamino 74), Jota (Gordon 82), Firmino (Milner 78)

Brentford XI: Fernandez, Ajer, Jansson, Pinnock, Roerslev, Baptiste (Wissa 68), Norgaard, Janelt, Henry (Canos 49), Mbeumo (Jensen 75), Toney

    Hi DZ! Another update

1 FT. 5.0m ITB. 250K OR. 1 FH (no idea when), TC (Salah?) and BB (DGW36?) left

    Sa
    TAA (C)ancelo Ait-Nouri
    Jota Gray Foden Bowen Maddison
    CR7 Dennis(VC)

    Pickford DCL Coufal Royal

The current plan is Gray to Coutinho for GW23, then Jota + DCL to Salah + Broja for -4 in GW24 (bench Madders). I'll reconsider if DCL explodes vs Villa

Royal to Digne will be GW25+, or could be in GW23 if Villa get a double

The rest depends on how things are by GW28. Pickford should be gone at some point (cost me 10 Sa points). Double Chelsea by GW28 with 2 FTs for CR7 and Coufal could happen. Not set in stone

Do you think that Coutinho is fit enough to bring in yet? Would you consider Raphinha as an alternative?

Coutinho is fine, yes. I prefer his fixtures to Raphinha, but Raphinha himself is one of many good midfield options atm. I've been recommending him

Prefer Coutinho's ceiling in this new Villa attack. And, again, fixtures

Not sure he's a starter just yet but could be golden if he is. Will be interesting to see however how Everton respond after the Rafa sacking.

He's still a watch for mine and would certainly prefer Raphinha right now.

I understand the hesitation about starting in GW23

But the thing with my transfers is that I like looking beyond the next GW. Coutinho isn't at Villa to be an impact sub. It's nigh impossible, especially considering how he made the attack tick during a cameo after such a long time without playing

So, if he somehow gets benched vs Everton (I consider this quite unlikely), he's still starting from GW24 to GW28, some of the best fixtures in the league

Yes, Raphinha might outscore him in GW23 by just being a guaranteed starter, but GWs 24 to 28 are worse fixtures for him than for Coutinho, who I can simply set and forget

I can then get Raph if one of my other reliable mids gets injured or something

Royal goes nowhere with his 3 games in hand.

I want a defense long term of TAA, Cancelo, Digne, Royal and Kilman/Ait-Nouri.

Just look at teams with lots of games in hand and keep your players that have them. It's a really simple tactic for the end of this season.

Bowen probably the only one I'd want to hold onto considering his form/value that doesn't have stacked doubles. Maddison has 4 games in hand. Try to find a way to hold onto him even through the tough games now because it will pay off soon.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply and the points raised 🙂

I don't like Spurs defence or next 8 SGW fixtures atm. I'm more interested in player/team performance than DGWs. If Spurs defence improves, especially against Leicester and Chelsea, I'll keep Royal. Digne in a team that has a good chance of clean sheets seems more useful to me atm (I didn't foresee his transfer to Villa, so Royal made sense at that price point). They'll mostly be backup to TAA Cancelo Ait-Nouri, though

I agree about not touching this midfield for a long time: Salah Foden Coutinho Maddison Bowen

I have no plan to sell Madders. I love his returns since GW13, and he's fixture-proof. Might just bench for the Liverpool, blank and maybe Wolves fixtures

Spurs' defense under Conte has been exceptional in the league tbh. They've kept 5 clean sheets in 8 games.

The mixed form in the cups is obscuring the fact that their defense has become one of the best in the league. Their 3 games in hand are bur bha ARS too. Those are attackable fixtures.

My big focus for this next half of the season is on minimizing hokey cokeys. I really do not want to sell a player only to buy him back 2 weeks later. It's why I'm a bit reluctant to sell Kane over Ronaldo because I can see a scenario where I will want Kane back if he has a nice double.

Think you have to be careful about picking out the Prem here. It's the same squad (OK, not same players each week) playing.

In the sample you've used, they haven't kept a cup clean sheet since October.

            These games did happen.

The clean sheets they kept were against Everton, Brentford, Norwich, Palace and Watford

Some of which involved quite the amount of luck

I enjoyed the points, but I don't like the fixtures or how they look as a defence right now

Different strokes for different folks, I guess

As I said: if Spurs defence looks good vs Leicester and Chelsea, I'll consider keeping Royal (Southampton, Wolves, Man City, Leeds, Everton, Man U, West Ham) over attacking Digne's fixtures for free

Also, if Villa defence disappoints in the next two good games (beyond the effects of luck/chance), I'll just keep Royal on my bench

Have Watkins and Coutinho. Maybd captain Coutinho, depends on alternatives. Honestly, getting annoyed with Watkins returns but at least after a DGW I can sell if he does very little, wouldn't need to hold another GW

Just to clarify, was the Coutinho assist removed because he didn't actually touch it/come off a defender? I haven't done my weekend round-up of watching just yet but when I saw the one clip of it at full speed with no reply I remember thinking to myself "he didn't touch that"

What is the commentator waffling about with Bruno's first goal. Martinez clearly trying to call offside for Cavani (who was played on by Mings) was nothing to do with the quick freekick. Back pass wasn't the best for 2nd goal but Mings could've got there I reckon.

What a game though, great highlights. Mad how I saw that at full speed as I walked past the TV downstairs yesterday, still more youthful than I feel! lol

I’ve got Trent and Robertson, which worked a treat this week. Question is, do I keep both for the foreseeable or swap out Robbo?

Currently tempted to hold until Norwich (GW26), but that’ll mean Jota has to make way for Salah when he’s back

    1. Zenith UK

My original plan, way before Leeds v Liverpool was postponed was Trent, Robbo & Salah for the rest of the season. Use the extra 1M+ to upgrade elsewhere.

I think when Salah and Mane return and with Bobby being back fit that Jota is more susceptible to rotation.

Yeah Jota is a great value option when one of Salah, Mane n Bobby aren’t around,

With the lack of Chelsea options at the back rn, Trent -Cancelo - Robbo feels like a pretty solid trio to rely on at the back.

        1. Zenith UK
          • 8 Years

For sure. I nearly even did Rudiger > Robertson this week and decided a -8 was too much (did Son/Mahrez to KDB/Jota) and started Keane so that was like a 10 point swing for me which is gutting.

Other benefit, when the Chelsea fixtures swing back round it means you can go for Mount (cheaper than Jota) which technically free's up even more cash and if one of Liverpool's front three does get injured again and Jota can continue to start week in week out it's an easy switch of Robbo > James or whoever they may sign at LB.

Surely no worries at all. Robbo is a fact in that defence unless injured/unavailable.

Klopp loves his two full-backs, most of his rotation in in midfield

    DDG
    Alonso TAA Cancelo
    Maddison Jota Bowen Bilva
    Ronaldo King Antonio

    Foster Gray Dawson Livramento

    1FT, 3.8itb

    Early thoughts here?

    Thanks

I'd go Livra/Alonso to Ait-Nouri or Bernardo to Foden... Or roll FT and reassess with 2 FTs and Salah probably coming in for Jota in GW24 (don't lose Maddison)

Thanks mate, I had previously pencilled in the Bilva >> Foden move

I bought Maddison in just before the Leicester Burnley game got postponed, I’d be more spewing but I couldn’t afford Bruno anyway

I suppose a lot hinges on whether there is a DGW23

Check Maddison's points since GW13, with and without Vardy

There are bigger reasons to get him than the DGW

I have a very similar team and I'm planning to roll this week if there are no DGWs.

But if Villa double, I'm planning to buy Digne and Watkins for a hit (Lose Alonso and Antonio)

Yeah the DGW news is the key driver isn’t it

Really like the Digne move, that’s a def if DGW for Villa and Watkins the other likely move… I may do King >> Watkins however

What’s your plan to get Salah back?

Any early thoughts on this lot.

    DDG.
    Tierney, TAA, Cancelo.
    Martinelli, Foden, Jota, Bowen.
    Ronaldo, Anto, King.
    Bach, Coufal, Dalot, Son.
    2 ft's, 0.4m ITB.

    Maybe Dalot/Coufal -> Digne + change Son -> Coutinho?
Anything else I should be considering?
I'll need to keep Salah in mind of course.

    Everyone on the WC hype at the moment, if I was going to Wildcard it would look something like this;

    Sa, Foster
Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Cresswell, Ait Nouri
    KDB, Jota, Coutinho, Bowen, Gallagher
    Antonio, DCL, Dennis

KDB & Jota > Salah & Foden maybe?

Don't think it's the most opportune time to WC when thinking about doubles to come
e.g. you have triple West Ham in that draft and zero Spurs or Leicester who have played 3 fewer games (or 4 if the Wednesday game between the two doesn't go ahead)

      1. Zenith UK
        • 8 Years

I don't think I'll WC until 27, just if I was going to WC this would be the team I do.

Even with the extra games the form of Spurs/Lei is left wanting right now so have no issue not having them and slowly transitioning when the DGWs are announced

If I tweak this, I'll end up recommending my team

          But here's my preference anyway:

          TAA Cancelo Ait-Nouri
          Salah Foden Coutinho Maddison Bowen
          CR7 Dennis

          Forster . Broja Digne Dalot

              • 6 Years

CR7: Man U's talisman in FPL and on the pitch, with some of the best fixtures in the league until GW28, when the transition to Lukaku is seamless. You don't need to cap 'em

              Maddison: points since GW13, fixture-proof

              But, yeah. Everyone plays differently

I completely get what you mean I tipped Ronaldo as soon as he joined and I even thought they'd be a top 2 team this season with their acquisitions but alas.

Just wondering whether Maddison can continue his form with missing strikers.

He's had different striker combinations for his hauls. He's had hauls at CAM and at RW, across competitions, and after long breaks between games. Dude's just on another planet for now

Vardy missed his GWs 16 and 19 hauls, for example

As I said a month ago or so, Maddison is either gold dust or saw dust. No midpoint. I'll sell when he switches off again

Fixtures aren't the best, though. So I understand going for the likes of Raphinha instead

And it'll be annoying if Maddison switches off right after getting him, because it might be until next season

+I think if I was wildcarding now, I wouldn't bother with Jota. I'd have Salah back and bench him for GW23. Along with double Liverpool defence, I'd double on City's with Laporte in. I'd be cheap up front since strikers have underperformed all season. My most expensive might be about 6.5m and I'd go with a 4-5-2 formation.

        I originally had Salah/Foden but figured everyone would shout me down for benching him for a week. That being said, how's this if you went cheaper up top;

        Sa, Foster
Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Laporte, Ait Nouri
        Salah, KDB, Bowen, Raphina, Gallagher
        Antonio, Dennis, Gelhardt

This squad leaves me with 0.1 ITB.

Almost there, in my book. I wouldn't have Gelhardt - I'd want a full bench with covid still about. Broja is value. You'd have to downgrade Raph or Gallagher to afford him, or maybe forego Antonio for someone like Edouard.

Evening gents! Guess that hit for Bruno paid off, eh? He and The Bowen pushed me through the 200k barrier finally.

I dodged a bullet banking on the rumors NLD being postponed before the deadline...scared me off a FH and the likes of Kane and Reguilon, and along with them the likes of Alonso, Cucurella, etc. Without the Arsenal request, I may have taken the plunge on the FH. And would have destroyed my DGW, as I wouldn't have had the money to get Bruno.

So instead i played my lone Arsenal defender, preferring him over Gallagher 1st on my bench (because i'm an idiot), and decided to place my trust in reliable SGW's: Trent, Cancelo, Bowen, Jota.

To be fair, a double Spurs DGW with Kane, etc, could have been lucrative of course. But that wouldn't have changed Bruno's score. But with already having Ronnie, and with Son's price weighing down my midfield, an expensive United asset seemed a reasonable punt. I can't claim to be anything other than lucky.

Swings and roundabouts. And still more fireworks to go.

It's a great song, and in fact Mew is brilliant. A bit of an acquired taste though. Wierd, sugary, experimental pop rock. But they are amazing. Try the album "...And the Glass Handed Kites." If you don't like that, you won't like them.

I feel like I've had a bad week ( for context: 65 (-4) with just DDG and Dennis left to play again) but in reality, even without the likes of Bruno (14) and having Keane (-2) start in my team, I've finally broken the 100K barrier this week and I'm even in the top 75K huge jump. I guess it's from not pulling the trigger on FH?

Anyone else feel like that this week?

It was very tempting. I talked a friend out of FH-ing too and they've definitely benefited from it, especially as the Man U fan he is meant he decided to bring in Bruno for Son (against my recommendations).

Gratz on up to 200K, what's the goal for the end of the season?

Ahh thank you, that means a lot! I try to think about my posts before I post and always explain why I think what I think, sometimes I can come across as a bit of a pointy thing though

Ok. I hit the WC to get Bruno’s rise.
He’s planned to be the Salah placeholder so am extra 0.1 from him would be nice.

Going to enjoy the week chasing rises and planning the team. So far I’m on this…

    Sa, Foster
    TAA, Cancelo, Robertson, Laporte, Coady
    Bruno, KDB, Coutinho, Bowen, Raphinha
    Saint-Max, Dennis, Broja

Could easily see myself upgrading a forward to a 7.5-8.0 range too.

As stated in my reply to Zenith above, consider this:

      TAA Cancelo Ait-Nouri
      Salah Foden Coutinho Maddison Bowen
      CR7 Dennis

      Forster . Broja Digne Dalot

Check livefpl.net/myteam for how it works almost perfectly around fixtures, captains, blanks and doubles

Jota as the Salah placeholder, not Bruno. Jota to Salah for GW24

      CR7 + Dalot to Lukaku + James/Alonso for GW28

Transfers focus on random stuff between GWs 25 and 27, but you won't need 'em, except if you want to dance around with the Maddison slot instead of benching him, if no injuries arise

Just my suggestion. I understand there are multiple angles atm

      1. RogDog_jimmy
        • 4 Years

Appreciate the suggestion! That’s why I come on here.

I’m starting mainly with a team of players I like to watch - mainly. Will work from there. Feel like KDB or Foden will be a turning point on the team given their prices.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 6 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

I think Foden and KDB could be around the same points per start

Foden is the main striker, although he does get shifted to the wing now and then, but still carries the team even there

I think the preference for KDB is due to the recent goal, but I remember a point earlier this season: some people who watched Foden blank vs Chelsea were impressed and got him in for his run of points. He played like that again vs Chelsea

I could be very wrong, of course, but I don't see many reasons why KDB is worth 4.1m more than Foden

Also for what it’s worth I can do that team with Salah in for Jota and have 1.1 for upgrades which is nice.

Yuuuuuup. Ait-Nouri is doing stuff that can get him priced at 6.0 next season, and he's 4.3

Unlocks a whole lot of freedom, like having a premium forward while still capping only midfielders and TAA/Cancelo

I stopped paying attention to Wolves recently to my detriment. Just had a gander at the lad. You reckon he has the left wingback spot on lock (assuming he's fit)? And since, Marcal is, you know, bad?

He's been nailed since GW9, when he came in and showed just how bad Marçal had been

Marçal is a placeholder, like Schlupp and Dendoncker: versatile enough to play multiple positions, but not the best at any of them. Coaches love these lads as squad players, which is a role I think Marçal excels in

I think Ait-Nouri has even been better than Jonny, but Jonny's still well out of the picture

He's nailed. He only got injured, and then started and assisted in the Cup before his two assists in GW22

Awesome. I’m considering an early WC as well. Although I don’t like pushing the button before a long break (GW’s 23-24). I love the turn of fixtures for Chelsea and Arsenal in 28 which is also a decent WC time

I know it sounds like sacrilege in FPL circles, but Jota has been a very good backup player since he joined Liverpool, yet remains a backup player

Firmino, no matter how many blanks he has in a row, is undroppable to Klopp long-term, for multiple tactical reasons. Same for Salah and Mané. 4-2-3-1 has also failed to impress when attempted, as that third mid is more essential to Klopp's system than a fourth attacker

There are MANY viable midfielders atm, who are absolutely nailed with good fixtures and possible doubles

It might take until GW26 for many to realise this, but I think Jota will evaporate from the template soon

There is no spot in a 5-man midfield in FPL atm for someone who rotates. Here's a shortlist I can instantly recall atm:

Salah, Mané, KDB, Foden, Son, Maddison, Coutinho, Gallagher, Raphinha, Bowen, JWP (form pick), Saka

This has happened a few times in FPL now, and Klopp has returned to starting a fully fit Firmino over Jota, consistently enough to end the argument

Maybe the change will be now, but I don't see why Klopp will change it. He didn't even change the 4-3-3 without Salah and Mané

No, it's how the template works

There's usually around 2 GWs between Firmino's return and the mass sale of Jota, as Jota usually impresses enough for many (including me twice) to hope that *this* time, Klopp will keep starting Jota as he's surely earned his spot

So, it's a 2-GW estimate based on historical data

I'm not in the country where you win elections by making good points, sadly. Not going to explain that. I'll just summarise with one word: Nigeria

Friend's stable now, diagnosed with complicated malaria but now recovering. Boil seems to have gone. No worries

I am not so sure about this. I will keep Jota until he is rotated. When I think of our front three now, I see Salah untouchable, mane regression, Bobby regression and jota in ascendancy. I don't think he is the clear cut next man up anymore. Klopp does love Bobby and jota plays best in manes position. Mane is not undroppable. I think three rotate into two and that means jota plays enough to justify price and value

The Jota/Firmino stiff you speak was like last season, if you look at Jota Vs Firmino this season Jota have started over Firmino several times and Firmino is not as effective as he was, still good in press play and link up but he is not at 18-19 level anymore. JOTA offers something else and Klopp sees that. And Jota is 7.5 mid and even with som bench still one of the best 7.5 mid there is. And you can have him and the likes of maddy, Foden etc.

GK purchases after GW1 are WC or injury driven. Wolves had a bad run early on until after most WCs had been played. Sa had 2 GWs out recently which will have stalled any building momentum. Now a relative lack of DGWs might still cause players to choose other GKs

Because their fixtures were not great from GW11 onwards and before that they kept 2 clean sheets in 10 games.
