Our series of articles on the promoted sides ends with a look at Nottingham Forest’s midfielders and forwards.

We have already assessed The Reds’ head coach and defence, with focus now switching to the exciting Brennan Johnson (£6.0m) and the supporting cast.

To help us with our research, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout’s founding father and Forest supporter, Mark Sutherns, to provide a fan’s view.

You can find everything you need to know about fellow new boys Fulham and Bournemouth here.

The stats in this piece are taken from FotMob and WhoScored, with the heatmap courtesy of SofaScore.

WHAT IS FOREST’S GOAL-SCORING POTENTIAL IN FPL?

Forest were promoted from the Championship with the third-best attacking record, having scored 73 goals in their 46 league matches.

That was 33 short of Fulham’s total (106) and one fewer than second-placed Bournemouth (74).

However, Forest plundered just five goals in their opening seven matches under Chris Hughton prior to his sacking, while it’s also worth noting that no Championship side acquired more points than them in 2022.

Above: Annual Championship table 2022, via Transfermarkt

The Reds were behind nine Championship sides for shots in the box in 2021/22, but what’s encouraging is how effective they were on the counter-attack, an area Mark highlighted as a strength.

2021/22 total (rank v other Championship clubs)
Goals scored73 (3rd)
Shots573 (5th=)
Shots in the box350 (10th)
Shots on target199 (4th)
Attempts from set plays142 (16th=)
Attempts on the counter-attack27 (2nd)
xG69.7 (7th)

“While Cooper likes to control the ball and possession in matches, Forest were the most effective Championship side without the ball in that they offered a sharp attacking edge on transition. They don’t engage a high press but instead defend smartly and set traps for turnovers and then attack with the pace of the wing-backs and front two to capitalise. It’s a tactic that seems set up for a newly promoted side and one that will likely see Forest cause problems, even for some of the more elite Premier League sides. – Mark Sutherns

Mark also suggested Forest can be effective from set plays, although having lost the on-loan James Garner back to parent club Manchester United, a new set-piece specialist will need to be found.

“Cooper’s side were impressive defending at set-plays and equally adept at capitalising on weakness of their opponents from dead-balls – see Joe Worrall’s goal versus Leicester City for reference. Again though, much depends on whether they can find a replacement for Garner so that ammunition can be provided for Yates, Worrall and Scott McKenna.” – Mark Sutherns

    Aston Villa assets to get?

Cash or Digne, forwards/mids are tricky. Maybe Watkins? But not convinced by any.

Mings an overlooked option at 4.5 two decent opening fixtures and can be rotated.

Cash/Digne, Coutinho & Watkins are the obvious ones.

What TSB % would you say is low enough for a player to be considered a differential? I might create a few RMTs with 9 differentials for variance.

      High ownership = over 10%
      Differential = less than 5%

Over 10% is not high ownership. Maybe above 40% is high ownership. 10% is differential. 20-40% is medium

It also depends on distribution so both of these could be true. If you are top 10k with Ronaldo and no one else in the top 10k has Ronaldo...but every casual has picked him then he could have an ownership of over 50 % but still serve as a differential FOR YOR.
In a similar way, a player can theoretically have ownership of only a few percent and not be a differential for for you if everyone else at the top are the only people who've picked him.

I don’t bother with that. I just pick the players who I think are the best value and who will get me the most points. How many others who
own them or not does not come into my thinking unless it is captaincy.

Is it mad going big at the back and up front but light in midfield? Been tinkering too much I think…

    Haaland, Kane, Jesus

I imagine you will get big points from your defence but need to consider if Salah/Son/KDB are likely to outscore Kane and Haaland for a similar price? Obviously midfielders get more points for goals and clean sheet points

I'd love to be brave enough to do something like this - in reality i'd probably downgrade robertson to try and atleast get another £5.5m mid

      1. Paqueta Rice
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

Robertson surely outscores the 5.5 mid though but I understand you are referring more so to flexibility with formation

    5. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…
      • 16 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Regardless of formation If Salah does not fire you are ahead of the curve. If he does it is panic stations and are chasing the pack from gw2.
Formation is an irrelevance really as the game is fluid in a couple of game weeks/transfers it could be something else.

      1. Paqueta Rice
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

Well, yes and no I guess. Yes if Salah fires with his ownership it will hurt but that is only if all the other players I used his money on flop. My team with Kane c gw1 might outscore your team with Salah gw1 even if Salah hauls. I do understand the risks however and this is the first Salahless draft I’ve done.

    6. jacob1989

Bit extreme. Dont like the extreme imbalance. Apart from salah, the 8m mids are attractive. Too much in defense.

Scribbled down a similar set-up, but with 4.5/4.0 Brighton keepers and Neto in mid with a back five of double Liverpool, double Chelsea and Cancelo!

Only issue for me is the lack of Salah captaincy for Liverpool home games. If they concede, and Diaz is benched, you're potentially in big trouble.

I think I'll end up in a 3-5-2 Salah/Haaland team, with Neto as fifth mid and three mid-price.

From what I understand, Pep doesn't like two right footed CBs together any more ie Stones with Dias

That leaves Laporte nailed and Dias 98% nailed, but Stones will cover Dias a little bit

    Mendy / Steele
    Trent / Cancelo / Perisic / Tomiyasu / (Williams)

    Bottomed.

    Any thoughts on this please....?

    Henderson, Forster

    TAA, Laporte, Chilwell, Trippier, 4.0

    Salah, Bowen, Diaz, Mount, Martinelli

    Jesus, Toney, 4.5

No city attack so could change any of the 8 mil+ midfielders to Foden but I think Mount and Bowen's minutes are more secure.

    This team (minus Salah, Haaland) are predominantly differentials. Tried to factor in non-rotation risks;

    Pope
    VVD - Dias - Romero - Castagne - Jonny
    Salah - Rashford - Bowen - ESR - Andreas
    Haaland - Wilson - Toney

    1. Chris_l25

        I'm not buying the line that he's a Mane-lite

Thing is, this time last year, we were wondering if Jota, as 7.5 mid, would be a decent asset and he turned out to be excellent till Mane/Salah returned and Diaz was signed then Robbo ramped up

Looks good to me. How much are Pereira and Murphy? Could you downgrade one of your 4.5 defenders to a 4.0 for a bit of extra cash elsewhere?

Is Zaha an option? Forget fixtures for a sec

He's ok to hop on for a nice fixture run, probably the most reliable Palace attacker (although I do hope Olise/Eze can nail down a spot this year)

Forgetting fixtures yes I think Zaha is a good option. He’s the main man in an ever improving Palace team, off the back of his best ever goal scoring season in the league and is on penalties. However I won’t be starting with him because of those aforementioned fixtures. Once the fixtures turn however…

      under the radar watchlist

Lamptey - if he were nailed hed be best value pick in the game
Stones - if he can stay fit he should start, citys best defender
Kristensen - lots of goals and assist
Mitoma - watched him with japan looks class
Mwepu - will step up, great creator
      Sarmiento - brighton x factor
Brooks - beat cancer will star in the prem
      Wissa - direct, greedy, clinical
Bruno fernandes - expect him to play the front 3. Tadic type role. Ronny leaving.
Van de beek - was one of the best in the world at ajax
Sancho - will show why he cost 90m
Rodrigo - world class player in there. Suits marsh ball
      Chiquinha- next Neto
Jota - probably starting liverpool striker 5% ownership
      Mateta - underpriced
Alvarez - tactically better match for city than haaland. Pep could start him

Stones City’s best defender? Van De Beek one of the best in the world? There’s some good calls on the list but some pretty hot takes too. Wissa in particular could be very interesting I think.

Stones absolutely city's best defender. He just can't stat out of the physio room

That van de beek was one of the best in the world at ajax isn't a hot take. Balon d'or nominations don't happen by accident

I like Stones and do consider him underrated but I think that’s a bit of a stretch considering the quality of the likes of Dias and Laporte.

Worth pointing out he didn’t get a single vote and finished behind 3 other players even from his own team as well as the likes of Wijnaldum.

Laporte is excellent playing out from defence, defensively he's not even close to stones and dias. Dias was near perfect in his first season but last season was inconsistent. Stones is better than both when he is fit. As good as laporte on the ball, as good as dias defending, more consistent than either and has better mentality and leadership

Stones has been City’s best PPM CB in both of the last 2 seasons. For some reason wasn’t favored by Pep last season but still had better PPM than both Dias and Laporte. The season before he was an absolute CS machine

I think DD is talking about him being the best in footballing terms rather than FPL though. From a fantasy point of view, I’d agree (assuming minutes being equal) that he’d be the one I’d take. I just don’t think minutes ever are going to be equal.

Alvarez will start ahead of haaland? Maybe in the cup competitions.
Jota and Darwin and diaz and firmino. Think these 4 will be rotated. Though firmino may start less
Dont think stones first choice.. Dias and laporte are. Though stones will get the odd start
Not touching any manu assets till they show form of old. Rashford the most tempting if at all.

Re alvarez it could potentially be a jesus/aguero type situation. Haaland has been bought for years and will be a huge success im sure. Pep will need to work with him to adapt his style though whereas alvarez is also a massive talent that plays like the archetypical pep forward. Id give it like 20% chance that alvarez is the one that makes his mark first

Is it even possible to get Son in our team without sacrificing Salah?

Wouldn’t make sense to, because you can’t captain them all every week. You have to pick 2 of those 3. The best pro for Son is that he murders SOU. Something like 13 goals and 5 assists in 15 career matches. So I’m actually toying with the idea of Son over Salah.
For me, Haaland is a must because you can get out of him with 1 transfer, but it might take me 3 transfers to get him if he does what I think he’s going to do over the first 8 matches

Neco Williams could be a key figure. If he gets a move, you've got a viable first sub for 4.0m, which makes a big back five less attractive maybe? As you potentially won't need a 4.5m sub mid or a playing sub striker. If he gets his move, 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 look favourable, maybe with two decent subs of him and Tomiyasu or White for 4.5m.

It might even open the door for Salah/Kane/Haaland/Jesus....

Doubling has nothing to do with it really. I think ESR could be a great option, even with limited minutes.

There is a slight added bonus that, if one gets injured, doesn't feature, or gets diminishing starts/minutes, then I already own the player who will benefit most from it, but this isn't the main thinking behind it.

                  1. @persecuted_by_mods
                      3 years, 5 months ago

So you're backing him to return from very limited minutes? He did manage it last season I guess

                        • 9 Years

With the potential that he does even better when starting. Ultimately, every attacking player is going to see their minutes managed more with 5 subs. ESR is already priced low for this reason. Other players are priced high because of their perceived nailedness, which is less powerful factor this season.

6.0 for an Arsenal goalscorer is very cheap (only 1.5m more than minimum). Thinking of it in that way, Saka is more than twice his price, for similar returns (I think possibly less actually)?

But what do I know, I'm a moron.

I think more likely my lower ranks are due to picking poor/fun FPL picks rather than bad overarching strategies. The articles a while back by Hedge on formations showed 523 to be the worst.

I have got more up front than I usually have in Haaland and Jesus and only one 8m mid. I had 3 originally.

I see a lot of midfield light drafts with no 8m spots and that would concern me on your behalf.
