FPL 2022/23 best-value players: Last year’s points, this season’s prices

For students of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) statistics, the recent price reveals have enabled them to delve deep into finding new ways to perfect their Gameweek 1 squads.

Here, we will combine two popular stats into one number.

Points-per-gameA player’s total FPL points are divided by their number of appearances.
ValueA player’s total FPL points are divided by price. In this case, starting prices.

This should help optimise the £100m budget beyond premium assets like Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Son Heung-min (£12.0m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Harry Kane (£11.5m).

Although a golden piece of FPL wisdom usually advises managers to look forward, rather than chase past points, let’s try to determine which 2022/23 players offer the best value based on their 2021/22 performances.

Last season’s PPG Value

Using last season‘s starting prices and the data from our Premium Members Area, these are the players with the best points-per-game-per-million (PPGP£m) scores in 2021/22:

For example, Joel Matip (£6.0m) took part in 31 matches and totalled 170 points – a rate of 5.484 per game. Divide this by his £5.0m starting price and he’s the only player to exceed 1.00 for PPG Value. It’s no surprise to see Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) right at the top too, whilst Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t held back by a £7.5m price.

On the left are those who played over 1,800 league minutes. By raising this to 2,052 minutes (60% of the possible 3,420), the likes of Reece James (£6.0m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) are removed, as seen on the right.

This is unlucky on Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), who would likely take Marcos Alonso‘s (£5.5m) place on the list had he not suffered a serious injury. Until then, his six outings brought in three goals, three clean sheets and a whopping 54 points.

We can already see defensive domination, with three £4.5m goalkeepers sitting inside the top eight. Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m) and Emmanuel Dennis (£5.0m) are the only attackers to reach the upper section.

Changes for 2022/23

This only intensifies now that the upcoming season’s prices have been released. Bargain attackers from last year such as Bowen, James Maddison (£8.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) have had a steep increase in outlay, with Diogo Jota (£9.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.0m) amongst those to now be categorised as forwards rather than midfielders.

Furthermore, many of last year’s players have been lost to relegation or transfers abroad, affecting the likes of Dennis, Antonio Rudiger and Sadio Mane.

Another mitigating factor is that Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Richarlison (£8.5m) have switched Premier League clubs over the summer. Whereas Jesus has left a squad role at Manchester City to likely become the focal point at Arsenal, the reverse is probably happening to Richarlison. For them, the last campaign’s points-per-game data is therefore irrelevant.

This season’s PPG Value

Now we take a look at PPMG£m using this year’s prices.

Matip’s numbers were so strong that the subsequent £1m rise hasn’t knocked him down, although it’s a surprise to see Tierney so high. His 22 starts brought 11 clean sheets and four attacking returns but he was overshadowed by much-owned teammate Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m).

Once those under 60% playing time are removed, it leaves a trio of Liverpool names on top. A big talking point of price reveals was the drop of goalkeeper Alisson from £6.0m to £5.5m, who now offers a genuine budget-saving supplement to Alexander-Arnold or Robertson.

A handful of these leading names are likely to remain avoided. Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) couldn’t reach 2,052 minutes and that’s before Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) arrived, whilst Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona.

Also, in goal, both Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) have competition from new signings Nick Pope (£5.0m) and Sam Johnstone (£4.5m).

Of course, saying that there is more value in defence isn’t news to anyone. So let’s specifically look at midfielders and forwards.

Midfielders and Forwards

Up front, it was a bad season in FPL and the numbers back this. The two best-value forwards – Dennis and Armando Broja – were only there because of a £5.0m starting price, with one departing via relegation and the other returning to parent club Chelsea. Second-best midfielder Conor Gallagher (£6.0m) is also back in west London.

Said Benrahma remains at £6.0m. Although two goals and two assists in the first pair of games quickly saw him gain popularity, it just as swiftly died out. What may have been ignored is that – while colleague Bowen developed into a must-have asset – Benrahma did continue to be fairly productive despite managed minutes.

From Gameweek 19, the Algerian international registered five goals and three assists from 11 starts.

Elsewhere, the tough early fixtures awaiting James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) means that FPL managers may instead focus on Mason Mount (£8.0m), James Maddison (£8.0m) and one of Brentford’s forwards.

Points per million per game is, of course, a basic route into FPL team value.

We can’t just create a team of FPL assets based on ‘PPGP£M’ as we’ll inevitably end up with a huge wad of unused cash in the bank, due to the fact that Salah, Kane et al will struggle to feature in the above tables. Value Over Replacement Player (VORP) takes this to the next level and is something that has been written about at length by our clued-up community over the years.

But it’s a decent starting point for making a rudimentary comparison of, say, two players of the same position and price: Robertson and Cancelo, for example.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

I'm thinking more medium term, for the first 5 game weeks. Not planning transfers for that period - there will be plenty of unplanned transfers that will crop up inevitably.

I’m worried my 5-3-2 is too light in midfield, so 5-2-3 leaves you even more inflexible. No Salah is a huge risk as I’m sure you know.

I’d consider downgrading a premium striker to 4.5, upgrading a 4.5 mid to Salah and funding it by downgrading Robbo

Good article. Kids nowaday doesnt know about what best value player. Thats why they always choose Trent even Matip (if he nailed) and Robbo have bigger value ...

Matip at 6.0 (last season just 5.0) have bigger value than Trent and that help us get better mids and fwds.

    Maybe because psychilogical reason: FOMO.

Once again, I didnt mean we cant pick Trent .. he is so good as FPL pick but there is always a way to find some money without him and without losing points (he is not a captain by many managers, so his point not double) . Its all epend on who is his combination and where we spend the remaining money.

I talk about this for a few days and now can rest peacefully.. hahahaha

Keep seing a simplistic and misleading take about perisic gametime under conte being parroted. The two situations are very different.

He was rotated a lot over a 6 month period as he evolved from an unwanted attacking mid without a role to play at inter into one of the best wingbacks in europe.

Conte trained him to play wing back and provide cover/competition/different option to young. First few months him and young split gametime pretty evenly with young trusted more in the tricky fixtures. First 24 matches perisic started 10, came off the bench in 12, unused sub twice. By january he started to shine and establish himself as first choice. He started 12 out of the next 14 he was available for. More heavy rotation late season with the league won and nothing to play for.

In his season under conte perisic was subbed off before 60 minutes 3 times.

Don't disagree with anything you say but I'm still on the fence. His numbers are skewed by a great season finish imo. Three goals in last five games, five all season before, and six assists in last ten, only one before that. Still great numbers for a defender for sure but he's 33/34? in a new league so it's a wait for me.

Fair enough there is plenty of options in defence but i don't see how his numbers are skewed. The beauty with perisic is we don't need to wonder about his attacking out put because he's been a world class attacking winger for the last decade. We already know his delivery, finishing and composure are top shelf. Only now he gets defensive points in the 4th best defence in the league. He got 10g 9a all comps last season. Thats not including fpl assists.

His stats are as youd expect https://fbref.com/en/players/6fe90922/scout/365_euro/Ivan-Perisic-Scouting-Report

You're obviously a fan and good for you. For my own interest I went through last season in Serie A for his games and guessed his fpl points and 'awarded' my own suggested bonus points. All done in my head, and people can add them themselves, he might have scored between 160 - 180 for 38 games. Not bad at all.

I think my bigger question with Perišić is: will his style translate to big points in FPL?

Spurs goals and assists are very heavily skewed toward Kane and Son, lots of counterattacking goals rather than crosses and long spells of possession. Plus I don’t trust Spurs to keep many clean sheets with Chelsea, West Ham, City, Leicester and Arsenal in their first nine

Yes it's an issue. Gotta remember these pre season teams we make are picking blind. Once the season starts and we have form and tactics to assess there will be an evergrowing list of players you need to bring in so flexibility is key.
Obvious place to find funds is defence. E.g robertson, cancelo, tomiyaso to perisic, trippier, neco gets ya 4m to swap a 4.5 mid for one of the 8.0 gems.
The 7-9.5 mids and forwards are gonna be key

honestly i think whatever it turns out for any of us, i genuinely think banking at least a .5 is huge to catch price changes after week 1. it's the tie-breaker for me and what's pulling me towards haaland (or kane i suppose) and saka over jesus and son

I think this covers enough template picks, whilst still being differential to some degree. I think this is the perfect balance of team I have made right now. People will disagree, and that is fine.

    Alisson
    TAA Perisic Tomiyasu Neco
    Salah Son BrunoG Gordon
    Haaland Jesus

    Begovic Andreas Ferguson Greenwood

Quite like it. Only downside is playing Neco every week. Could shave 1m off Alisson and upgrade Neco to a 5m defender. Comes down to:

      Alisson and Neco
      vs
      Raya and Cash/Trippier, for example.

Can't help feeling the latter scores more overall. But go with your gut.

Don't think may will go with the 'threemium' as it weakens the remainder too much. Bruno, Gordon, Neck, Andreas won't score enough to justify it.

Do you reckon Maddison is worth the 1.0 more than Barnes? Both posted very similar numbers in the two seasons before last. I’m expecting Leicester to have a good season now that they have no Europa and I like their opening 3 fixtures

Tomi is a steal at 4.5 and solid template pick. But Gabriel and Tierney at 5 could be good value picks and offer more attacking threats exceptially Tierney if he can stay fit. He might even bank CS points and get substituted before conceding if Zinchenko signs.

It's not clear what Doherty's status is at the moment. Some reports say Spurs want to sell him, but I'm not sure how reliable they are. They've just bought Djed Spence who tore it up in the Championship - will he start in place of Doh or be bedded in a bit later? Don't know. I'm likely to make a late decision on Doherty myself.

    As someone who lives in another time-zone I have to rely on numbers more than the eye test, this is possibly the best article I’ve seen this off-season. Some points I take;
    1. Tierney is very good value, if he plays as a wing-back, perhaps better than his $4.5m teammates.
    2. Cancelo is not essential, LaPorte or Dias could be alternative City defensive exposure.
    3. Forwards really are horrible value wise.
    4. Don’t waste a defensive slot. Not only are they best value premiums, but also best budget options as well. For example, Neco looks like being a great budget choice, ticks every box, but think long and hard about if he’s worth one of those valuable slots.

    1. Letsgo!
      • 7 Years

I dont agree that cancelo is not essential
      And tierney is injury prone

        2 years, 2 months ago

That’s fair enough that’s your opinion. I’m just basing mine on the fact that City were a little low on for fullbacks last season. Walker was injured a lot and Zinchenko is not the best defender…with Curacella expected to arrive, I see him, Walker and Cancelo rotating quite alot. Whereas, there’s not really anymore competition at CB, right?

Hard to argue with you regarding Tierney being injury prone…perhaps you’re right there

    2. Bring back Rafa
      • 4 Years

So two questions I have are:
      1. Which City CB is most nailed? (Also chances of them being rotated with Stones)
      2. What system will Arsenal play, and where does Tierney fit in it?

Laporte and dias are good options but i think that 1 mil extra is really worth it for cancelo.
If you need to save the 1 mil to upgrade midfield etc, go for it

"As someone who lives in another time-zone I have to rely on numbers more than the eye test"

We here now are all in a 'different timezone'. I still prioritise my eyes, even if not all the games I watch are live or full highlights. Your stat-based conclusions have some caveats. Tierney - not only is he injury-prone, but there seems a very high chance that Arsenal are going to upgrade him with Zinchenko.
