FPL

Which FPL players could prosper for new-look Man City in 2022/23?

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway this time next week and one of the main sources of debate among FPL managers each and every week will be over Manchester City’s line-up.

It’s been a summer of change at the Etihad, with Erling Haaland arriving but some big-name players exiting.

Long-time Fantasy Football Scout user middyjim – aka the excellent @City_Tactics account – talks us through the tactical tweaks that Pep Guardiola might make this season.

‘You have to shake. You have to move. With the same guys it’s almost impossible.’ – Pep Guardiola, May 2021

Manchester City did try to add to their ranks in the months that followed the above quote but advances for Harry Kane (£11.5m) were rebuffed and the only major changes saw the arrival of Jack Grealish (£7.0m) and the departure of Sergio Agüero.

A year later, City shook.

Out have gone Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling (£10.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), with over a quarter of a century’s service between them, replaced by Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Julián Álvarez (£6.5m). A left-back is seemingly imminent too, whether it’s Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) or otherwise.

How could this affect City’s tactical set-up and approach? Here are some potential changes we could see.

A Double Pivot

Guardiola has generally deployed a 4-3-3 since arriving in the north west, with two number 8s providing the creative flair in midfield. But in the second half of last season, City began to use a version of the 4-2-3-1 in some matches, with Ilkay Gündoğan (£7.5m) or Bernardo Silva (£7.0m) sitting in next to Rodri (£6.0m). It helps City in the build-up, adding an extra technical player, and it was usually deployed against teams who pressed high.

When the opponent presses they have an extra man to pick up deep in City’s midfield and spaces open up behind them for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) to drift into. The champions’ full-backs can hold width and are given more licence to push forward.

City build with a Rodri and Gündoğan double pivot and wide full-backs, allowing De Bruyne to push high at Molineux in May

When City press in a 4-4-2, De Bruyne joins the front man in the initial press. Allied to a double pivot in the build-up, it results in De Bruyne playing higher up the pitch, where he’s more dangerous.

Haaland and De Bruyne form the first line of the press vs Bayern Munich with Bernardo and Rodri sitting in midfield

De Bruyne’s returns in the second half of last season speak for themselves. Notably, his re-introduction to the team, after fitness issues in mid-December, brought Bernardo’s hot streak to a swift conclusion.

  • Potential Winners: De Bruyne, Cancelo, Walker, new left-back
  • Potential Losers: Gündoğan, Bernardo

Quicker Transitions

If you’ve signed a Tremendous Nordic Meat Shield, it would be remiss not to utilise his freakish physical prowess. Haaland’s speed and intelligence in transition has led to a glut of goals in the Bundesliga.

That isn’t a natural fit for Guardiola’s side, who have developed into a patient, metronomic team where control is King. The swashbuckling days of Sterling and Leroy Sane bombing down the wings are long gone. City’s play is slower and more precise.

But now the Citizens not only have one of the world’s most lethal attackers in transition, they also possess a player with an unparalleled combination of on-ball running power and passing range to orchestrate them in De Bruyne. It seems likely that Guardiola will try to take advantage by introducing quick transitions when City win the ball back deep. Keep an eye out for De Bruyne staying high out of possession, almost taking up ‘false nine’ positions, with Haaland stalking the channels looking to get in behind.

Belgium used De Bruyne like this in transitions in Euro 2020. Playing high but dropping off the centre-backs to feed Lukaku in the channels

  • Potential Winners: Haaland, De Bruyne

Diaz teams have more balance, it's the funding over base in sub-premium defender slots v midfield. Class groups.

He’s the only one i’m not 100% on but he’s had a good pre season so im willing to take the gamble. In any case, i’ve left 0.5m in the bank to move to an 8m mid if he flops

I like the Sancho pick. I think he'll do well this year. Managed to get TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Salah, Kane and Jesus who *should* all bring plenty of points. Looks strong

    Alisson
    Cancelo, Digne, Trippier, Dalot
    Salah, Maddison, Bowen
    Haaland, Jesus, Toney

    Fodder bench.

A little different- I’m personally going with three outfield Liverpool players so not a fan of Alisson, would Ederson be better pick. No Robbo or TAA is bold!

Yep, I'm not completely relaxed about that either..! But that's what Allison is there for: at 2M less than TAA I feel I get some cover and more value overall

Don’t like it to be honest, sorry. Alisson limits your outfield Liverpool options. No Trent seems way too risky and what has Toney done to deserve a spot in your team. Does he have any pre season returns at all?

Hi guys, just throwing up my first draft on here to gain a feel for how it looks to you fine people.

    Ederson
    TAA - Trippier - Cancelo - Gabriel
    Martinelli - Diaz - Salah - Bruno G
    Kane - Jesus
    _____________________________
    Klaesson: Archer: Andreas: Williams

Leaves 0.5 in the bank, I’d like Bruno or Martinelli to maybe be another 8m mid like Saka or Mahrez, but would mean downgrading Ederson perhaps to a 4.5.

I dunno, just putting out the feel’ers 🙂

    Any thoughts welcome guys.

I like it. Quite template but that's not a bad thing. Personally not a fan of the premium keepers. You should get a lot of cleansheets but that's about it. If you downgrade to a 4.5 you can use the 1m elsewhere

      1. RICICLE

Cheers Chris. Yeah I usually don’t start with, or usually use premium keepers, but just looking at City’s fixtures I think the value could be there with Ederson, but then again could also go a little cheaper in Ramsdale who appeals as well. 1m elsewhere with like Meslier could be very useful though I must admit.

    RMT please.
    Sanchez (Steele)
    Robertson Cancelo James Dalot (Neco)
    Salah Mahrez Mount Neto (Andreas)
    Kane Jesus

I started to doubt about James who played horrendous tonight. Maybe downgrade James (but to who?) and upgrade Robertson to TAA?
James still could be really explosive as wingback. So difficult to decide.

    Salah (c), Martinelli, Grealish, Neto
    Haaland, Jesus

    4.0, Andreas, N Williams, Greenwood

Ahead of community shield I think this is where I’m at, key questions are :
    1. Kane or Haaland
    2. Who’s the second £8m midfielder

My 3 player bench fodder to rotate one in each week - this presumes Dasilva is first team

    Meslier - (Klaasen)
    Trent - Cancelo - Dias - Trippier - Neco
    Salah - Diaz - 8m - (Andreas) (Dasilva)
    Kane / Haaland - Jesus - 4.5m

    1. luk46
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

are you gonna start one of them every week? that’s ballsy, I‘d say get two midfielders around 6-7m

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

        2 years, 5 months ago

Yep. I want two 8m midfields as there’s so much value there I want to be able to rotate transfers between them. At 6m there’s very limited good options.

If you assume Dasilva plays and look carefully at fixtures - between the three of them there’s at least one with a fixture you can target each week in the first 8

        1. luk46
          • 6 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

Mount maybe, I‘d still prefer two 5m players to Dias and Neco/Da Silva tho

I want triple city for GW2. I’m either gonna start with one of Mahrez or Haaland or transfer them in. If I downgrade Dias I’m pricing myself out of Dias / Laporte / Chilwell / James which I don’t want to do - Dias in part is a price point holder.

I don’t think we’ve had as good multiple fodders in recent years. A 4m nailed advanced wingback who has 2 or 3 good fixtures, a nailed on advanced midfielder with some set pieces with 2 or 3 good fixtures and Dasilva who could play quite advance and has great fixtures.

    Jesus/Watkins (Archer)

      Very solid team.
      1. I would wait with deciding on Haaland vs Kane until the Community Shield. To see whether Haaland plays, for how many minutes and how he looks.
      2. I would go Mount over Sancho based on Mounts output last year (169 points in only 2358 minutes).
      3. Not a fan of Trippier. NWU defender, his output never has been that great. I would prefer Gabriel.

Son/KDB would have to go down to a 6m, which would be better than the 5.5m fwd options.

    2. PastaFasul

I think you will have to rotate the 3 heavy hitters by fixture....Salah/Son...then Salah/KDB...etc. Gives a better balance to the rest of the team.

    Current team

    Sanchez
    Cash, Trippier, Walker, N. Williams
    Salah (V), Martinelli, Mount
    Jesus, Kane (C), Haaland

    1. BerryMaze

I think you are too light on defence. But this seems inevitable when going with 3 big hitters. I mean TAA, Robertson and Cancelo will each probably yield 180-200 points. If you think you can compensate this with your additional big hitter then go for it. Personally, i would downgrade 1/3 and upgrade defence.

    2. PastaFasul

      Quite like it.

Thanks for the comments. I've been in two minds over premium defence or premium forwards, and went forwards. Wanted to get Haaland early as his price is likely to go up, Kane is on form pre-season, and I think Jesus is going to make a big difference at Arsenal. I know the advice is to go with premium defence and wing-backs, but I'm hoping my budget bunch can get some assist/goal returns. The £100M limit is such a bugger!

It’s a good attack for sure.
Dalot or Jonny instead of Tomiyasu and maybe Bailey over Rice then to maximise the attacking potential.
Also, just have Steele as backup for Sanchez to save 0.5m

Yep, but Burney's Costelloe was the worst player on the pitch. Missed three great chances, got booked for giving away a free kick in a dangerous position and got hooked.

Yeah, impressed with Kompany's set up in the first half, but they should be gutted and concerned that it was only 1-0

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Gabriel Trippier AitNouri
    Saka Mount KDB Salah
    Jesus

    4.0, Andreas, 4.5 strikers.

Before we all wildcard GW2 anyway

      Like this very much tbh.
Only minor thing is: What are you going to do when Haaland (or Kane) starts firing? Will cost you -4.

That's all very well, but what is your opinion on the Neighbours reunion (above)?

Gonna have to wildcard early I imagine, would have to lose KDB in that event…but his preseason and Pep’s comments…

I would like Trippier but don't want a def that I have to spend a trsf on after 2 weeks. Who knows what newly emerged wonder will have to be bought!

Thanks everyone. Someone will emerge earlyish and with the World Cup transfers and early wildcard I don’t see much point in planning beyond the first 5 game weeks as a max.
