FPL Gameweek 3 team news: Injury updates from Thursday’s pressers

Five Premier League pre-match press conferences were held on Thursday as the countdown to Gameweek 3 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) continues.

We’ll have all the injury updates, team news and key manager quotes as they come in.

As well as the five managers speaking to the media today, 15 more will follow on Friday and we’ll be bringing you a round-up of those pressers in another piece tomorrow.

KEY UPDATES

Thursday’s presser times are listed below:

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Antonio Conte has confirmed that Sergio Romero will miss the Saturday lunchtime clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers after feeling “a bit of pain in his adductor” following the draw with Chelsea last weekend.

Oliver Skipp (foot) remains out but Conte expects him to start running next week, while Clement Lenglet is available.

Conte was asked whether any of his new signings could start this weekend, with Ivan Perisic the main name of note from an FPL perspective.

“We are playing one game a week and for this reason, I think especially at the start, I am trying to play with the players who know me much better and know our idea of football.

“But we are exploiting this time to bring players like Richie, Lenglet, Bissouma, Perisic and Spence… to understand to go into our idea of football.

“But I am really pleased because we are doing the right steps and we are ready when we have game every three days to make rotations.” – Antonio Conte

LEICESTER CITY

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Harvey Barnes is back from injury and should be available for selection this weekend.

Ryan Bertrand (knee) and Ricardo Pereira (Achilles) remain out.

“Harvey Barnes, it’s great news for us, he’s been back in training. That’s really good for us. He’s looked excellent and fit and had a really good pre-season. It was a blow to lose him for the opening few games but he should be available.

“We will decide whether he will be in from the start. He’s looked good in training. He’s had a really good pre-season. He may be available to start, maybe not [play] the full 90 minutes, but we’ll assess that tomorrow after the final session.

“It certainly opens up that possibility [of changing formation to a 4-3-3] when you have at least one winger who gives you that pace and width in the game.

“It’s always important for how we play, that width. We always try to be flexible in how we play. But of course, when you’re limited, when he was out, we had to adjust.” – Brendan Rodgers

SOUTHAMPTON

Romain Perraud (leg), Tino Livramento (knee) and Theo Walcott (match fitness) all remain sidelined for the trip to Leicester City but Che Adams is available for selection despite missing training earlier in the week.

“After the last game we had only a problem with Ché [Adams], he wasn’t training until today. Today he was stepping back in the session. Missed a few sessions this week but is available.

“The longer-term injuries… Romain [Perraud] is still not available because he was also out for the last game, and Tino [Livramento].

“[Theo Walcott] is also not training with the team. He missed the whole of pre-season with injury and is on his way back with the team, every day training.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

Ralph Hasenhuttl hinted that he would stick with a wing-back system in Gameweek 3, despite switching to his previously favoured 4-2-2-2 in the closing stages of the comeback draw against Leeds United.

“We have invested a lot of energy to play in this [3-5-2] shape. What we played at the end of the last game [a 4-2-2-2] was an ‘all-in’, what is also sometimes working, but you have to be careful when you use it.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

BOURNEMOUTH

Dominic Solanke (ankle) will be assessed tomorrow after missing out last weekend but Joe Rothwell (thigh), David Brooks (match fitness) and Ryan Fredericks (match fitness) are not available.

“David [Brooks]… is with the team in modified training. I’d like to think that maybe over the next week to 10 days we can start pushing him into full training and then from there, try get him up to a level and speed to participate at Premier League level.

“Team news is probably similar to last week. Dominic Solanke, maybe. We’ll assess that tomorrow. Regarding Joe Rothwell and Ryan Fredericks, it will be too early for them to come back in at the weekend. Other than that, everyone else has come out of last weekend all good. We’re fully fit in that sense.” – Scott Parker

“There’s definitely a chance. Obviously Marcos came in, we didn’t think [the Man City defeat] was the right game for him and certainly he’d barely had any work with us. We feltt it was a good decision to let him watch from afar. He’s had another week of training. He’s in a better place to maybe get a shirt at the weekend. But again, we’ll see exactly where we are tomorrow. I’ll make that call on it.” – Scott Parker on whether Marcos Senesi could start

NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Steve Cooper confirmed on Thursday that Ryan Yates and Steve Cook are back in training after injury; Cook actually made the bench last weekend despite being ruled out of the game by his manager.

Jack Colback is still suffering with illness, however, and Omar Richards (leg) is a longer-term absentee.

“Ryan Yates is back in training, that’s positive. Steve Cook is back in full training. Jack Colback is still suffering with his illness.” – Steve Cooper

Moussa Niakhate, who appeared to come off last weekend with a muscle issue, wasn’t spotted in the midweek collection of training ground images, and Cooper would only say “we’ll see” when asked how long the defender would be out.

“Maybe. We’ll see!” – Steve Cooper on whether his latest new signings could feature this weekend

Need a new cheap midfielder, is Dasilva a good pick? Or is it better to get someone at 5.0 like Jensen or someone else?

I would just go Dasilva and save the 0.4 for a future transfer.

Probably not. He's only had two shots, and they've just brought in players to play in his position.

Hard to say with DaSilva really.

If you aren’t wildcarding yet then he might be ok to get for now, as he might be able to last for you up until you wildcard.

The £5.0m midfield price range isn’t particularly productive so it’s not like there’s glaringly obvious picks that you can go for. You have to just hope that you get a decent enough player for that price.

Probably Dewsbury-Hall is the best £5.0m option as he’s pretty much nailed, it not sure what else is available.

Does this "banking potential on Rodrigo" strategy make sense? I was able to get Rodrigo at 6 before his price hiked.

    Hence my team is:
    Sanchez/Raya
    TAA James Cancelo Walker Saliba
    Salah Diaz Martinelli - Rodrigo
    Jesus Haaland
    Bank: 0

The idea is I would start Sanchez and Saliba for a back 5 the next 2-3 weeks with Rodrigo on the bench. In essence, I've locked in his 6.0 price just in case he is the next Saka, Gallagher, Bowen, from last year. However, I'm still able to get in on Arsenal and Brighton/Brentford great upcoming fixtures for shutouts particularly Saliba. If Gross, Perisic, Cucharella start to shine, then it's easy to make the swap out of Rodrigo for one of them. Is this a wise strategy or its just better to wait for more data on Rodrigo and pay more?

Yeah it's a good idea. You've got a good XI each week with a decent sub when/if required.

I don’t know who your other bench fodder players are, but Rodrigo on the bench seems wasteful.

I’d want to be starting a £6m mid every week. If you already own him, though, then it doesn’t matter what any of us thinks of the strategy as that’s what you are going to have to do anyway.

I’ve got Rodrigo and the thought of benching him especially now Bamford is out doesn’t make sense to me.

What’s the upside of Saliba? Likely to get 6 or 7 points tops. Not sure I have that much faith in the Arsenal back line for consistent clean sheets.

It's not about consistent clean sheets it's one game

Upside for Rodrigo vs Chelsea is probably 6 or 7pts too.

Trippier -> Cucurella or save FT and play Andreas for the tough games?

    A) Andreas (BRE), Trippier (wol), Andreas (BHA) + 1FT
    B) Cucurella (lee, LEI, sou)

If all your squad are fit and starting, I'd save the FT.

I would only make a luxury transfer when you have 2FTs, and no one is injured/suspended/dropped. Going from 0pts->xpts gives your transfers the biggest impact. You never know what will happen next week.

When in doubt, save it. Things will be clearer next week with more info, and 2FTs.

Remember why you picked those players initially. You must have believed they'd bring home the bacon.

          Probably Andreas.

Can't see Newcastle having over 30% possession so going to be hard for Tripps to get involved.

          Andreas.

I really don’t know why people have an issue starting him in their teams either.

I’d have shippped Bailey out this week before his price drop though. 2FT are nice and all, but prices change very quickly at the start of a season.

I’ve done this before, where I’ve kept players dropping in price in the first few GWs of the season in order to save 2FT. Before you know it, they have had multiple price drops and now you are stuck because you’re priced out of the players you want to get as replacements.

Despite being out injured for the majority of last season, Josh Dasilva = 23 goal contributions during the 2019/20 and 2020/21 Championship seasons combined

That is pretty good for a dirt chesp midfielder and price rocketing. Who else will you pick in his price range, Bailey?

      Hi Foo

I’m Leon’s mum, Mrs Bailey to you.

Leon’s really busy just now so he’s asked me to reply for him.

He finds it very sad that you seem to dislike him as a fantasy pick even when he’s so cheap and tries his best to do goals and assists whenever Mr Gerrard picks him. He says that if he plays this weekend and hauls a shedload of points while that lad from Fulham who you’re always banging on about blanks, he’s going to have to make sure he doesn’t starve to death cause he’s going to be laughing at you so much for days afterwards he might forget to eat.

Apart from that, have a nice life.

      Bye.

I would keep him, you don’t really get much better than his next 3 fixtures, unless you’re playing Man United.

I’d probably shift Dier as I think it’s too much for a Spurs defender who isn’t really going to get attacking returns ( watch him score this weekend now!).

Otherwise, that’s a cracking team, mate!

Yeah Dier came good 1gw so I am already emotionally attached hahah. But he is acting as a spurs cover cause I think they will have a lot of cs this season. Also I would keep all the others so can only be another 5.0 def so think I am Rob holding for now. Cheers my friend.

Are we supposed to just lay over and go down? Because people don't like it when newly promoted clubs barely attempt to compete, either. So you're damned if you do and damned if you don't it seems.

Forest are a club who have the potential to compete with the big boys, that much has been proven already... but to do so we have to stay up this year and continue to reap the financial rewards of being in there Premier League. It's a prime case of speculating to accumulate. It's literally just an investment.

Also, it may be 16 signings... but Forest lost 5 first team regulars at the end of last season because they were only with us on loan. Then Samba wanted to leave too, so we lost another. Right from the word-go we've had to sign six players JUST to make up the numbers compared to where we were at the end of last season, and then on top of that we simply have to add quality and depth to compete in a higher division.
What do you expect Forest to do? What would you "like" to see Forest doing instead?

In fairness, it was a common joke in the Championship that Forest would sign a whole new team every window.

All I will say is that if you go down FFP is going to be very interestng, even with parachute payments

And yes, as. QPR fan I know exactly about coming up and spunking millions on a plethora of new shiny players.

In our case, they were all garbage and players who didn't want to be here, so we overpaid ridiculously to get them (then wondered why we had a team full of mercenaries).

I don't think the players you've signed are anywhere near that level of bad, though.

Why though? Because they're showing ambition?

Oh! Didn't mean to hurt any feelings.

I think, and its my personal opinion (which could be wrong), that buying a few Premier League quality players to add to the existing core of the team is the best strategy to stay up. I don't think changing the core of the team is helpful. But, I am sure Cooper knows better.

        1. nobwak
          • 8 Years

Forest are a unique case, in that the "core" of our team was ripped out, beyond our control, because 5 first-choice regulars from the promoted team were loanees. The first choice goalkeeper also left. That alone meant that we had only 5 of our first-choice players from the promotion season left.

Believe me, we'd prefer it if we only needed to sign a few quality players too. The worry that these new signings won't "gel" is at the forefront of the fans minds... we just have to hope that they do, or at least that there's 3 teams worse than us this season.

Thanks. I will stick with Cucurella. But really worried to have an uncertain player in WC: I like nailed players in my team. Hope he plays for at least 3 weeks before I switch to Trippier. I could also get Sanchez, who is a better keeper than Ramsdale and keep 0.5m in the bank, just in case I have to switch Cucurella.

          Upside is massive.

Loads of 5.0m options. Trippier will be unlikely to rise, so it’s an easy switch.

Won’t be using hardly any Ft’s so it should be fine.

My current rank is 3.5m. I started without Jesus, GW1 was ok with 73 points, but Liverpool injuries (and hence, lack of cleansheets for my double Pool defense) and the penalty miss of Mitrovic pushed me back considerably. Hence, the WC to bring in Jesus, Toney, getting rid of double Pool defense and also build some team value, hoping to make up some up those points with higher team value.

I personally don't think so but it's anyone's opinion. However, 1) add the last 3 games the last season in which he also played in this new position and he's averaging 9+ points per game in his last 5 gws, with 4 goals and 2 assist in 5 games. 2) Eye test says he pops up in the box much more frequently now, missed a sitter last gw. Playing as a second striker compared to previous seasons so I hardly think chances will dry up unless he is impacted by the new LWB signing and Trossard starts occupying his spot

Just added a fresh quote from Conte, who was asked about whether any of his new signings could start this weekend. More bench duty for Perisic?

“We are playing one game a week and for this reason, I think especially at the start, I am trying to play with the players who know me much better and know our idea of football.

“But we are exploiting this time to bring players like Richie, Lenglet, Bissouma, Perisic and Spence… to understand to go into our idea of football.

“But I am really pleased because we are doing the right steps and we are ready when we have game every three days to make rotations.”

I rate him. Not sure about the £30M though.

    In the DRAFT game:

How would you rank these mids for the rest of the season:

A: Grealish (rather underwhelming in first two matches)
    B: H Barnes (just back)
C: Bruno Guimaraes (playing deeper so far)
D: Rodrigo (great start but not a great track record)
