FPL new transfers: Can Anthony Gordon shine at Newcastle?

Anthony Gordon (£5.2m) completed his transfer to Newcastle United over the weekend, a move that has polarised opinion on Tyneside.

The fee is the main talking point: the 21-year-old winger has signed for a reported initial £40m, rising to £45m with possible add-ons.

He’s altogether a cheaper prospect in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), however, so can his capture by the Magpies reinvigorate a player who was very much in the budget midfielder conversation in 2021/22?

We take a look in this Moving Target piece, where we have included data and images taken from our Premium Members Area.

GORDON’S FPL HISTORY

Gordon worked his way through the Everton academy system before making his debut at the age of 16 in a Europa League match in December 2017.

But it wasn’t until 2019/20 that he made his Premier League bow, making 14 appearances – nine as a substitute – across two seasons. A goalless, 11-match loan spell at Preston North End also featured in 2020/21.

His breakout campaign came in 2021/22, when he appeared in all but three of the Toffees’ Premier League matches and became an integral part of the side that staved off the threat of relegation under Frank Lampard. A modest four goals and three assists arrived from his 35 run-outs, of which 25 came in the starting XI.

His star was arguably never higher than last summer, when he turned in some excellent performances for England under-21s. Gordon’s impact was such that there was talk of a huge offer from Chelsea but the move never materialised and the young midfielder’s form has really taken a tumble since, with Lampard leaving him out of six of his final seven Premier League starting XIs.

How much of that owed to poor on-field performances and how much of it was down to his head being turned by other clubs, of course, is another question.

IN QUOTES

“He’ll give us a lot. He’s a young player with huge potential to have a big impact on our season. Very quick, dynamic player. He’s versatile and can play on both sides. The best is yet to come from him. He can add something difference for us.

“I believe he will fit our style of play. He is an incredible athlete and has the ability to run box to box at very high speed. I think he has the athletic durability that we want in our wide players. He has the passion that the fans will feed off but Anthony will have to earn that support.” – Eddie Howe

“I feel like it’s a really big step. People haven’t seen what I’m capable of yet. I think under the gaffer, and the way the club’s going, I can really excel here.” – Anthony Gordon

Form is close, to be fair. But I think Dyche might be welcomed with a quick spanking before he has enough time to revamp the defence

Ake, but don't expect perma-starts from anybody anyway. Probably gone from your squad by BGW28. I've had Akanji since WC18, but I'd take the punt on Ake now instead, if I could

Lewis wasn't competing with Cancelo. Cancelo hasn't started any game at RB since Lewis emerged. It's Lewis vs Walker, and it depends on if Pep wants a second DM (Lewis) or an extra pacey CB (Walker) for any particular game, so I wouldn't call either nailed

Some may not agree but this could spectacularly backfire. Miggy could be due

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          1 year, 7 months ago

He's been more of a provider recently (to underachieving forwards) than shooting himself, while Odegaard's doing both

West Ham isn't as bad a defence as Everton is atm, so I like the switch

Not saying Miggy's a fire sale though. Just something I'm fine with doing for free, since Odegaard's a long term hold and Everton is an easier fixture than the two teams he'll face in the double

          1. La Roja
            • 12 Years
            1 year, 7 months ago

I can’t see Everton as an easy fixture anymore. New Manager effect and all that.

Miggy could still blank too but you never know. Upside is there with the firesale

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 5 Years

There's been some digging into the new manager bounce on here in the past. A community article, I think

It has more of an effect when the players actually downed tools, which happens at clubs like Man U

But when the rot is deeper, a new manager usually needs time to clear out the dross or infuse a new mindset into the squad

I think the Everton issue is more of a deep rot than downed tools, as the players still played for Lampard as recently as that Man City draw

              1. Ze_Austin
                • 5 Years
                1 year, 7 months ago

For example, imagine the issue is due to Lampard's tactics. A new coach needs more than 6 days to teach his new tactics

Maybe even a full pre-season or international break

They usually start with incremental, gradual improvements to what the players are used to at first

Drastic changes can make you lose the dressing room quickly

Seems more like Pep wants to be the big man on campus. Freezing out and then loaning out a player who played 97% of the games for which he was fit in an 18 month period, and was such a pivotal part of a team that won silverware is borderline unhinged imo.

I'd rather Arsenal didn't go overboard with expensive signings, I'm guess we won't sign a DM now. City will win the league if Partey gets injured (and probably if he doesn't)

Ge rid of KDB for Bruno or upgrade Ward to DDG.

    Current Team

    Kepa / Ward

    Trippier / Schar / Shaw / White / Bueno

    KDB / Rashford / Mahrez / Martinelli / Mitoma

    Kane / Haaland / Mitro

    Thanks

I think the question is what do you do after? KDB to Bruno makes sense this week, but KDB doubles in 23. Do you just roll with Mahrez and Haaland? Reverse the transfer?

All questions i am battling with myself

    2. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years

You've got Kepa and a good backup. I wouldn't touch that until GW31, maybe Ward to Sanchez then and rotate with Kepa for the DGWs

How many FTs? I fancy Mitro to Nketiah if you can plan for Jesus' return

KDB to Bruno could be gold, yes. My issue is that it gives you one fewer fixture in the long run

It's more I always like defenders with attacking upside - rather than just going for CS and beyond - and it feels a bit dull here beyond Trippier compared to previous seasons of TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Alonso, James etc.

Most defender chances created since WC:
            Trippier 25
            Tete 8
            TAA 7
            Digne/AWB 6

Then yeah, Alex Moreno should bring the spark you seek 🙂

James is expected to be in the squad in GW22. Might even start. Chilwell won't be far behind

Zinch is more attacking than White, and he's back. Shaw shoots more often now too

They're coming back already. I'm excited

Surely Cancelo to an Arsenal defender. (He's dropping like a stone, BTW...)

Folks that bought him at 7.0m can take another price drop. Hopefully he gets red flagged soon to increase the transfer threshold for a price drop

    Afternoon All,

Cancelo to Zinchenko, or a slightly less risky Gabriel? Am kinda liking the Zinchenko punt, TBH...

Zinchenko is nailed so transfer looks fine

Looks settled in and more involved in the attack than others

I agree that Gabriel comes with more of a guarantee, and then he can pop up with a set-piece return in any game

Depends on your play style, I think

Daily Mail reporting there was a training ground bust up with Pep.

Cancelo to leave City following training ground bust-up with Guardiola. Player reacted angrily when learned he wasn't in starting XI v Arsenal. Threatened to leave and told he could go. No player bigger than club.

Good story, but the problem here is the source

Could easily be a clickbait article drawn out of thin air. Again.

    Leno
    Trippier Shaw Dalot
    KDB Martinelli Rash Mahrez Rodrigo

I'd roll FT and start Schar over Dalot if he's not in training by the deadline

Options A and B involve selling players who can get 2+ returns in GW22 for a player who can get 2+ returns in GW22

Tarkowsi reunited with his old manager, Sean Dyche.
Could be worth a punt at 4.2 for clean sheets and the occasional set piece header.

I guess I need to be sensible and just do A instead of B?

    A) Salah -> Bruno
    B) Salah and Martinelli -> Saka and Bruno

    2ft's/0.2 ITB

    Ward, Kepa
    Gabriel, Trippier, Bueno, Shaw, Schar
    Martinelli, Salah, KdB, Odegaard, Rashford
    Mitro, Haaland, Greenwood

Tricky one with Martinelli, a lot moving off him but a match-up vs. 34 year old Coleman rather than the Trippier and AWB he's faced recently feels like a good opportunity to pick-up points. Would rather roll the FT unless you think he's benched for Trossard. A.

    .3 ITB 2 FT’s

Looks like you have to choose between KDB & Bruno. But lots of options beyond that: Mitro - Nketiah, downgrade Cancelo to enable Almiron - Øde/Saka

    B) Ake
