  1. Chelsea v Brighton analysis

So, some selected player thoughts following the Chelsea vs. Brighton game here. I was more focusing on Chelsea than Brighton, but will add a few notes.

On the whole I'd say the squad seems fitter than I saw in games last pre-season. Tons of pressing, and we definitely more of a directness to your play. I do hope we play less static than the last few years.

Chillwell - Looks really sharp. It's the (FPL) player we know and love & he's still very advanced at times. Did say in a drinks break interview: "The manager wants me to get forward as much as possible", but it was a bit of a loaded question. Cucurella subbed on 2nd half and wasn't great. Hopefully Chilwell stays fit so he isn't needed as much...

Malo - will be backup to James of course but it's nice to have a proper RB as backup (that isn't the aging Azpilicueta). Wasn't overly advanced in today's match but did get up once or twice.

Colwill - I wasn't focusing too heavily on him today, but he was okay. Played a very nice pass ahead of the Nkunku goal. Did give away a penalty, but did seem he was cramping a bit too. I imagine he starts the season at LCB as Badiashile isn't ready.

Gallagher - Worked very hard. Ran his legs off all match (played the full 90!) If we keep him I think he's a player Poch might use quite a bit because of his work rate, but not often as a starter. As we all know he's a bit rash and

Angelo - Has really impressed in preseason. Has looked like one of our best players. I hope he's kept in the squad & not loaned. He plays RW and maybe a chance him and Madeuke rotate that spot, with Mudryk & Sterling (or even Maatsen...) on the left? Cheap as chips at 5.0m but ownt be nailed or prolific.

Nkunku - Another goal, nice! Put in a good shift. Some very handy runs. Admit I didn't watch his game as close as some others, but he's a good player who will be first t choice. Awaiting to see if it's up top or just in behind. I feel like he might have stood out more if not for...

Sterling - Wasn't impressed with his performance today. Despite the interviews about his diet change etc, he is still (for now) the same ol' Sterling (that I never wanted us to sign in the first place). Junky runs, gets in a good position... Then fluffs his lines. So wish his decision making closer to goal was better. Not an option I'd be going for initially.

Mudryk - Some nice runs and a nicely taken goal. Put in some good crosses too today, although again many of his minutes were also played against 10 men. Would still give him time to monitor given he's not 100% nailed, but hopefully better things to come this season.

Jackson - He feels like a real surprise package this season. Very very nifty in and around the box. Quick feet, good positioning and very nice strike for his goal. 1G 2A today (didn't play first half) today, it should be noted Brighton were down to 10 men. Still need to see us play "full strength" - as not sure he's as nailed as Nkunku but could be good alternative pick.

    On the Brighton front:

Mitoma looked quite sharp. March was definitely okay too, however more of the attacks were focused on the right side. Welbeck took up some dangerous positions and had some good attempts (and a goal). Joao Pedro looked pretty polished to me in his appearance - although vying for minutes. Pretty hard to judge Enciso today as he was only on in the second half, much of it when down to 10 men. They were missing Estupiñán & Caicedo today (and obviously he may come our way). They weren't defensively amazing, but we realky pressed them. Opening 20 mins was Brighton best period.

Apologies for any spelling mistakes (I've seen a few already, and called Gusto, Malo). It's very late & auto-correct fails me often anyway!

      Useful, thanks Hazz…

Chukwuemeka - how much game time you reckon this season? Could be 4.5m mid bench fodder potential?

Good player - and did well (enough) today ahead of Nkunku's goal, but I don't see where he fits into out starting XI so wouldnt be going there for a 4.5m MID who you expect minutes for every week.

Starting XI will look something like this.

        Jackson
        Mudryk Nkunku Madueke
        Enzo Caicedo*
        Chilwell Colwill Silva James
        Kepa

Cheers Hazz, and if not Caicedo, then Gallagher, right?

Not necessarily. We may still buy someone else instead. Reckon the Caicedo deal gets done but Brighton are (rightfully) getting as much out of the deal as they can.

Gallagher could start if Poch deems Mudryk to still be too raw and go with him in Nkunku's position above and Nkunku on the left but with Chillwell overlapping. If they get Caicedo that would give a lot of balance and control.

Shame about the injuries to Badiashile and Fofana.
Not keen on a Colwill and Silva CB partnership in a back four.
I think Jackson isn't a good enough striker.
And Sterling isn't in your first team, but Poch will play him IMO. Which is a shame as he isn't *that* good.

Would just say see how our defense is looking. Not the best opening fixtures; we're changing playstle (again); we're changing personnel (again)...

Cheers Hazz. Doubt I'll start the season with any Chelsea assets but will be keenly keeping a close eye on you guys early on. Normally don't place too much stock in preseason games but given how last season went and the squad changes I think every game you have will bring forward something

Thanks for a great summary! I watched the game as well, and agree with your conclusions and observations. Spot on!
      Few questions, though:
      1. Chilwell in really advanced position - there was a significant asymmetry between him and Malo Gusto. Reasons?
      - Malo Gusto had to deal with Mitoma?
      - Youngster's lesser experience and different profile?
      - Do you think, with James on the other side Chilwell will be as advanced?
      2. Jackson vs. Nkunku - I am worried about Nkunku minutes after seeing great Jackson's shift after half time. He was great.

As per Brighton - the most important observation was how sharp Joao Pedro was. I thought your "looked pretty polished" is an understatement 🙂 Welbeck was also doing well. Evan Ferguson will have hard time to fight his way into starting 11 week in week out. Also, Gross at left back at first half, while more advanced after the break (before they got down to 10 men).

Picking one of Bruno and Rashford is going to be tough..

Will a combo of Rashford / Bruno outscore Martinelli / Saka this season?

I don't get this, what am I missing?
Bruno is nailed (so is Rash) and on pens, sure. But he could play deeper with Mount coming in.
Whereas Rash...nailed in attacking line, may play upfront too, was pretty prolific last season

I thought Jackson looked more up for it earlier, I have no idea re how nailed he is, but on my watch list.

Here's a very, very crude calculation...Nkunku scored 16 goals and provided 4 Opta assists in the 25 Bundesliga games he played in last season which amounts to 76 base FPL points. He played 60+ minutes in 19 of those games which amounts to 44 appearance points. Looking at the results of those games, I'm guessing he would have earned approximately 25 bonus points. This gives a grand total of 145 points or 5.8ppg in FPL scoring terms which would make him a 9m/9.5m striker. If you compare this to Jesus' 125 points and 4.8ppg which see him priced up at 8m, then Nkunku looks a steal at 7.5m. However, he's playing in a much better league now of course so there will almost certainly be a drop off in his returns.

My conclusion? Heads Jesus, Tails Nkunku. Hope this helps 😀

...oops, forgot about his 4 bookings which downgrades him to 141 points and 5.6ppg but I'm sure there was a fantasy assist or two to boost it back up.
