Suspensions

Which FPL players are nearing a one-match ban?

Nicolas Jackson (£7.1m) is not only struggling to produce any attacking returns, he’s also only one yellow card away from a ban.

Yes, our Suspension Tightrope series – as well as the accompanying widget on our homepage – has been relaunched for the 2023/24 season.

We’re keeping track of which Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players are racking up the yellow cards and how close they are to a one-match ban.

This article also reveals when the cut-off dates are for suspensions and how many bookings our players have to avoid in order to dodge a ban.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

The table above is taken from the Football Association website and details the cut-off points for the various yellow card thresholds.

The one we’re concerned about right now is the five-caution mark, an unwanted target that Premier League players will have to avoid for their team’s first 19 league matches of the season.

That’ll be Gameweek 19 in most cases. Manchester City and Brentford, who contest their 19th fixture in Gameweek 20, are the exceptions.

Of course, any postponements, whether they be weather-related or Covid-enforced, would change that situation.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

ON FOUR/THREE YELLOW CARDS

All of Jackson’s bookings have come for dissent, a result of the threshold for that offence being reduced at the start of the season.

He’s not the only one sitting precariously on four bookings, as Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon (£5.5m) is also on the verge of a ban.

Bruno Fernandes (£8.4m) is a notable name on three cautions.

Lucas Paqueta (£6.0m), who has committed more fouls than any other Premier League player this season (13), is also two bookings away from a ban.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

How do you recover from a bad gameweek or get it out of your system?

I always take them a little too hard and dwell on them but this one takes the biscuit… has anyone scored lower than 28 this week?!

I was 20k two weeks ago, now 340k!

Just remember it’s only a game. Rank means nothing at this point in the season so don’t dwell on that at all. Long way to go yet

Remember it’s just a game and we’re not even in October yet. Forget it about this week, enjoy the European games and come back on Saturday morning with a clear head.

25 points, 5.9 million rank and it doesn’t bother me at all. Just a game to dip in and out for me. Enjoying not taking any hits and just making my weekly transfer and seeing what happens. It’s all too random to really invest too much time and emotion into.

I'm on 33 + Turner/Pickford. I also got battered on Sky FF this week.

BUT, I had a pretty nice week on FanTeam. So depends what your appetite is. If FPL is enough for you, I would say log off, forget all about it, and come back refreshed next weekend after enjoying the European games purely for the football. Otherwise, I would recommend playing multiple games. Playing 3/4 games means I'm more likely to get that little dopamine hit from at least somewhere!

It's very early days - 340k is still good!

Sweet. Accept there is loads of volatility week to week. Don't judge your decisions on that. It's luck and noise. We make predictions over periods of time. 4-6 gameweeks minimum you can expect the ups and downs to balance out somewhat. I don't judge me decisions based on instant points. E.g I bought rashford last week and after watching him I feel very happy and vindicated with the my decision. Doesn't matter that he got 2 points.

You can lol at me this week I did -8 to get Alvarez rashford and Eze and I benched Alvarez. Not phased. I'd do it again based on what I knew at the time. Felt his chance of getting rotated after internationals was like 70%+

Yeah, that’s unlucky man. I always try to trust my decision making process and judge that rather than the outcome.

If Haaland hadn’t missed that sitter, I could have been looking at a double-digit return for Gvardiol! One of those things, volatility of the game as you say

Hope the luck turns for us next week and beyond!

Totally hear you and it isn't pathetic. I've been there. In addition to this, you could find other things that bring you joy in life and pursue those to take the focus off FPL. For me, it was running and connecting in with a few guys weekly over coffee. I've taken big steps away from FPL and I've found it freeing.

This week was bad for most and the one who'd good week got something like 10 points, it's boring when gws like this occurs, but it's far better than when you specifically have had a bad week and everyone gets 20 odd points more than you. It feels like a week where nothing really happened. Go on, next.

I look ahead and not back. I've taken this approach to everything and it's done wonders for my mental health. Good or bad, I don't really dwell on the week once the deadline is locked and just look at future transfers.

Helps that I took a 3 year hiatus from FPL so I know there's life beyond it. Taking a 1 or more year break from FPL is really nice tbh. More people should do it if they're realizing they're not enjoying it anymore.

Nice one, thanks man. A year away does sound like a good idea but after a tough year in real life I found the tinkering quite a nice escape.

I think taking little mini breaks is the key for me. International breaks are great. I’ve got some ideas for next week but will leave it until Friday. Try and distance myself from the game for a bit in between. There’s definitely still enjoyment - just need to try and maintain that healthy distance / indifference.

When something bad happens I try not to dwell on it, get a good night's sleep, and usually feel better the next day.
I'm having a poor Gameweek and a terrible season and am currently at 3.5million, but I've had a look at what I've been doing wrong this season and what I need to do to get back on track.
Having analysed my mistakes, I then try to put the past behind me and to concentrate on the future.
Although I'm not where I would have been if I hadn't made those mistakes, I decided that I only need to change a couple of players for a hit to get a squad that I'm happy with, and am optimistic that I can then start moving up the rankings.
I've also reconciled myself to the fact that I'm never going to win FPL, and may not even get any more top 10k finishes, but I just enjoy playing and trying to make the best decisions I can from the positions that I find myself in.

Very relatable, last year after a really bad start it was making me feel very low. Like you mentioned above, definitely became something that carried the deeper struggles in life; at best it was a nice distraction, at worst a trigger for a ton of other real life negative thoughts and feelings. Anyway, I left all my leagues and stopped looking too deeply at stats, bought in players that I liked, and just tried to enjoy PL games regardless of my ff team, and started to feel a lot better about it. It was like a year off without cutting it out completely, worked well for me, and football kind of became a nice escape again rather than a crutch to pin deep seated issues on

But surely I can't be the only one who thinks that overall rank is pretty much irrelevant in September? I'm not saying it because I'm not the active number one, so I can't brag and make a career out of it, but because the point difference is so small and there's 33 gameweeks to go.

The final OR is all that really matters to me, and worrying about it so soon is pointless.

I look at it like this. Other than say defensive mids or injured players there are a big pool of FPL options. Nobody - no matter how full of it they are - knows what will happen to these players every week. Son is the perfect example of many.

Once you realise that you have picked a points probable side of 11 and maybe one decent sub then thats it, you can do no more. Whatever happens is out of your control. An injury, an own goal, a sub on 59 mins, a crazy goal:assist, a silly yellow card its all possible. And that can happen a lot if you are on the dark side of probability.

So I say dont fret the bad weeks, enjoy the good weeks when you fall on the right side and do not blame yourself for something with so much out of your control.

Been playing 10 years. Had many bad GWs. Just shake it off. Lot of strong teams on paper this GW will get less than 30 pts. Sometimes the good/highly owned players just don't turn up. Look at current team of the week only one player over 10% ownership.

    Sell one:

    A) Saka
    B) Foden
    C) Maddison

I'm going to buy Rashford this week bar injury. Can sacrifice any of those above to get him.

      not A.

      so probably B.

Rashford is funny, some of those with him want to swap and those without him want him in.

Maddison was almost a must have before Saturday as well and Foden was deemed essential 3 weeks ago.

I had to sell Rashford to open up funds for Pedro to Alvarez.

With a Salah team the cost of Rashford or Son is the compromise. I've been lucky that him amd Bruno have kept missing because it helped me focus on to players like Diaby as well.

Sometimes the difficult decision helps to unlock the opportunities elsewhere. Of course they'll score points sometimes but for me at least, Salah is proving that consistency is key in this game.

It's probably the right call, I started with Foden then swapped him and missed some points but it's the week to week that counts.

          Early days of course.

I think MCI's points are predominantly coming from Alvarez & Haaland - Foden's on the periphery (of the pitch) and not as involved where it counts.

I'd lean strongly towards Foden out over Maddison, as I think the games vs ARS & LIV will be quite open affairs, then it's a decent run again. Get the feeling Madds can deliver against most types of opposition.

No probs. I'll be starting both him & Son in both upcoming GWs barring any injuries.

Of course, Foden could haul next week, but he's more of a rotation risk too.

I think they're good games. Home games. Palace don't look great and don't travel well. Brentford have lost Henry now and I still think United can attack them.

Being home games is a big factor. And then yeah there's Burnley this week. That is very promising for Rashford. Can see him getting 15 in that one.

Fixtures breed form though and United have played Spurs, Arsenal and Brighton in 3/4 games. Those are 3 of the best teams in the league.

The one game they had that wasn't that tough was Forest and Bruno + Rashford both got returns in that one.

All the content creators didn't realize the fixtures were pretty awful for United and yet got two mids and held them through those games. It's no wonder it didn't work out.

This was part of the reason after one week against WOL I decided to sell Rashford and go 0 United. The fixtures weren't there and they looked awful in that first week so I had 0 faith they would prove to be fixture proof enough to hold through a tough run.

If anything, Rash looks to be more of a keep than Bruno. Palace were keeping Villa for 90 minutes and Brentford will give United trouble, with physicality and Frank will outclass ETH tactically. But there's no need to ship United attackers, the block of fixture is good. Buying assets now seems like a gamble, as there is a lot going on there atm. Which does look like affecting them on the pitch.

As an outsider, I don't think Man Utd have played good football for years. They seem reliant on moments from Rashford or Bruno rather than team patterns of play. I'm happy to hold Rashford for the medium term.

Can you start moving pieces in place for Salah? Or else would the plan be to WC him in?

You shouldn’t be worried about Mbuemo, Saka or Sterling at all.

Hojlund I don’t really have an opinion on but you obviously brought him in for a reason and I’m sure the Burnley game was part of it.

Your team looks great, just wait out the mid week Europe games and if no one gets injured have a think about which is the best defender to move on, probably Saliba or Chillwell for a Newcastle one.

I think with the Covid lockdowns FPL and football in general took on an intensity as a distraction.

The truth is as good as a Saturday can be there's much more to life than FPL. We've just got to put it back into perspective. Step outside I guess.

I took 3 seasons off. FPL sucks these days. The huge swings in fortune that can ripple out from every decision in a game where each transfer requires selecting one player from dozens of candidates and there is like 10m other players that are mainly NPCs that don't know sht about football getting spoonfed good moves and XG quick maths. I'm having another crack this season but as soon as I find it to be a chore or making football less enjoyable I'll make 15 transfers and make my team into my legacy draft team

"All of Jackson’s bookings have come for dissent, a result of the threshold for that offence being reduced at the start of the season."

Honestly, he should have already had a yellow for dissent during a comical tussle before a free kick about 20 yards out for Bournemouth. This moment showed how overhyped Silva is, and how there are no leaders at Chelsea. He was at risk of getting booked, or worse, giving away a pen. This went on for nearly a full minute. Where was Silva or Gallagher to pull him aside and tell him to concentrate/stop acting like a little boy? Nowhere.

Chelsea have a situation that is worse than having no leaders*, fake leaders.

*Reece James doesn't count because he never plays.

He's not a priority sell for me but Chelsea just aren't scoring the goals they should be and with him being an OOP it actually makes him less attractive on that front because he gets subbed very early. Couple of clean sheets but if that's the aim there are much cheaper routes into that Chelsea defence and again they've had the fixtures where you'd expect a few clean sheets anyway, the only way is down probably on that front.

Patience with Chelsea wearing extremely thin & fixtures are starting to turn anyway so if you can't trust him as a reliable starter over the next 3 then it kind of makes sense just to ditch him now especially if you don't have decent cover. I'm actually not selling him just yet though as I can easily bench him this week then reassess for ful/bur

Taking into account fixtures and form which peripheral three players do you favour:

    1. Botman or Udogie? as 4th option defender (own Vicario, so tempted by Newcastle fixtures personally)
    2. Diaby or JWP? as 5th mid option
    3. Wissa or Edouard? as third striker option

Just experimenting for now, not making early transfers, if any.

      1. Both good options, might depend on how they rotate with your other defenders if you consider them "peripheral". Not really keen on Spurs defensive double up though.
      2. Definitely Diaby for me. Looks dynamite & I think he's just warming up. Much more convincing attacking team & better fixtures. Only slight concern is managed mins with European games.
      3. Haven't seen that much of Palace the last couple weeks but I'm still pretty happy with Wissa (although slightly tempted by a Wilson punt); also better fixtures for Brentford still

All five defenders can be rotated for three available spots depending on fixtures. Likewise one of my front eight will get benched each week. With Areola as 2nd keeper I'll have a full squad playing most weeks barring injury.

He's surely got to score soon, I've got Diaby instead as cheaper and not as vexing. 8.0m not cheap and he's not on pens, but you know if you sell him what'll happen...

Yeah 8 mill, not on pens, but couple of assists, think I would sooner have Diaby over him to be honest
            Cheers

    Stick with Isak?

I think he starts against Milan. Then maybe Wilson gets the start against Sheffield Utd. Hard to tell, given the cup game against Man City next week.

Pep has said that he'll have to play the second string in that game so perhaps Newcastle will rotate heavily into the squad there too.

I'd expect Newcastle to rotate in defence, for once, and some other positions for that game. In attack it will be Isak or Wilson starting. I genuinely think Isak is first choice striker and will play against Milan. If it's a straightforward rotation, then maybe Wilson gets Sheffield Utd and Isak gets Man City. All guesswork though.

Probably not tbh. See how they line up for UCL but I imagine Wilson might start most of the next few GWs

    Flekken - Turner
    Dias - Chilwell - Estupinan - Udogie - Kabore
    Rashford - Saka - Fernandes - Maddison - Mbuemo
    Haaland - Jackson - Archer

    A: Jackson to Morris
    B: Jackson to Alvarez
    C: Chilwell to Trippier/Botman/Schar
    D: Jackson to Morris/Alvarez & Chilwell to Trippier/Botman/Schar
    E: Other

That doesn't really help with my Botman v Udogie and JWP v Diaby decisions.

What a nightmare, mere 29 points.

    Wildcard territory?
    1FT. 3.3M

    Turner (Johnstone) ***
    Chilwell Udogie Estupinan (Baldock*** Kabore)
Fernandes Saka Martinelli*** Mbeumo Sterling ***
    Halland Jackson*** (Morris)

    Thinking of:
    A) Jackson to Alvarez (play Morris for Martinelli)
    B) Jackson to Alvarez + Baldock to Botman/Schaar/Trippier (-4)
    C) Jackson to Alvarez + Chilwell to Botman + Martinelli to Salah (-8)

I like C. Audacious. But improving three positions in a really solid way and saving your wildcard.

    Would you do-

    A) Son to Rashford, or
    B) Henry to Botman?

My defence is looking pretty bare, and may even struggle to get three out (Chillwell, Estu, Henry, Gusto, Baldock)

Probably need more context on where the rest of the defence is but I would probably have it as a rule that transferring defenders for hits is a hard no unless you are struggling to get 3 out.

Not really sure tbh but I've stuck him in my UCL team. Don't imagine Silva RW for this game - that's more of a play reserved for control in much tougher fixtures. So not much competition if Grealish is still out.

Best cheap defender to replace Chilwell with?

    Current defence is:

    Flekken | Areola
    Trippier | Chilwell | Cash | Udogie | Botman

    Cheers
