Champions League

UCL Fantasy: How does the new Champions League format work?

You will no doubt know by now that the UEFA Champions League (UCL) will be debuting a brand new format for the 2024/25 season.

With fixtures now decided and September underway, it’s time to clarify exactly what the competition will look like.

Keen to freshen things up and improve, UEFA have settled on a new ‘Swiss system’ that allows teams to face a wider range of opponents.

Happily for UCL Fantasy managers, the official game is the same setup we know and love. You can dive in right now to start your team tinkering, as unlimited transfers are allowed before play starts.

Over the campaign, we’ll be providing a lot more content on this game via Fantasy Football Scout and our sister website Fantasy Football Community.

LEAGUE PHASE

Instead of the previous ‘group stage’, where sides had six matches against three opponents, we now have a ‘league phase’ providing them with eight matches against eight entirely different opponents.

Rather than 32 teams, there are 36 – seeded accordingly with nine in each of the four pots.

What is the new UEFA Champions League format?

Every club will face two per pot: one at home and one away.

The big twist is that all 36 teams exist in one league table. No more ‘group of death’ or head-to-head situations.

HOW TO PROGRESS

After UCL Fantasy Matchday 8, this giant table will determine who reaches the round of 16.

The top eight qualify automatically, whilst teams ranked between ninth and 24th will take part in a two-legged play-off to secure the remaining eight spots.

Meanwhile, those finishing 25th or below will be eliminated, without a Europa League safety net.

From here, it’s the usual 16-team knockout stage. Two-legged ties up to the semi-final and then a Saturday night Munich final.

OTHER CHANGES

Logistically, these two extra guaranteed Matchdays mean the initial stage will now go beyond December. There’ll be two midweeks in January.

And whereas Tuesday and Wednesday remain the primary occasions, Matchday 1 is an ‘exclusive’ week where some will also take place on Thursday 19 September.

This is touched upon in our look at fixture congestion for Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Manchester City. More matches could mean more line-up headaches for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

HOW IT IMPACTS UCL FANTASY

UCL Fantasy managers don’t have to think beyond January as unlimited transfers are permitted before the start of the knockout rounds.

However, they have two extra Matchdays to consider in the group stage.

More medium-term planning will therefore be required – something we’ll be helping with soon with our Fixture Ticker.

Chip strategy will also be under serious consideration. Previously, many UCL Fantasy managers have favoured playing these early – especially the Limitless – to capitalise on a strong group of fixtures on a particular Matchday. That’s still a viable tactic, of course, but there might be cause to hold fire given that the 36-strong league table will fluctuate dramatically week by week. The race for a top-eight/top-24 finish may mean that more teams have something to play for even come Matchdays 7 and 8, rather than be home and hosed or eliminated with a game or two to spare.

Now this new format makes sense, head over to the UCL Fantasy website and start drafting your Matchday 1 squad.

As someone who has read every King/ Bachman book and who was weaned on Arnie and Michael Biehn films, I'm loving this thread. Did anyone mention Total Recall yet? Classic.

I'll go a bit left field though and throw "The Quiet Earth" into the mix. Random B grade NZ movie about the last man on earth (spoiler, he isn't) which left me spellbound when I first saw it in the early 90s maybe.

I heard they were making The Long Walk into a film. Will be interesting to see how the (short!) story fares as a film, especially with King's books notoriously hit (Shawshank) or miss (Dark Tower) on screen.

I run most days so I find the concept interesting although, as always with King, it's about the characters more than the situation.

Yeah, PG didn't help TDT but also trying to fit the essence of 8 novels into one film, albeit it was supposed to be "alongside" the series not the series itself.

I loved The Long Walk, including the brutal ending. Some of his short stories are amazing.

Yes, it should have been sci-fi/horror R rated and a number of movies. I was a bit disappointed with the end of the Dark Tower books though. Overall favourite King novel is probably the Stand

I know TDT ending is divisive, personally loved it and like it more every time I think about it.

The Stand was pretty much my first King and agree it is phenomenal.

Good film. TV series was alright as well (albeit axed after 1 season). Pretty sure Leicester were on NZT when they won the league.

Not really FPL related but there are quite a few flaws with this new Champions League concept. The idea that there is a league where not everybody plays everybody, let alone playing everybody home and away, that the top 8 will therefore actually be the best 8 teams is ludicrous. I can see motivation being issue for some teams for those last few games. Already secured a top 8 place then there is no incentive to win this 'league' which there was in the old group formats. A lot of teams which fall in the middle bracket will know their fate too with no prospect of dropping up or down. I can foresee a lot of dead rubbers towards the end which actually is probably good news for FPL provided the English sides know their fate.

This format is so much better

Yes the difficulty if fixtures depends on luck somewhat but luck was involved in the previous format too, much more than this.

At least now u get a lot of big teams going against each other in meaningful games in the group stages and over 8 games the cream rises to the top. Also no real advantage for being higher seeded through some lame coefficient calculations

      1. Nightcrawler
        • 5 Years

Also you're wrong about the motivation thing. Teams will be seeded in the last 16 based on the league standings so they have every reason to finish as high as possible

      2. ebb2sparky

I prefer the idea that teams play the same opponent home and away, it feels like that is fairer but maybe I'm wrong. My main concern with this new format is that there were already a bunch of rubbish teams in the tournament and now there'll be 4 more

Yeah it's garbage, and from a fantasy perspective it's even worse.

144 games to eliminate 12 teams, so just a money spinner. The rich get richer and you get to watch Inter Milan v Man City-level fixtures 50 times where neither team is trying or caring. Sounds great.

The biggest flaw with all these concepts is they are watering down what actually made them money in the first place.

The Swiss System was first used in a chess tournament in Zurich in 1895, and the British Chess Championship has been played under this system for over 70 years.

The system used for chess is slightly different from the one being used in the Champions League though, since pairings are dependent on the results of the earlier rounds instead of being decided before the start of the tournament.
In the earliest tournaments using this system, players would be paired as far as possible against others on the same score who they had not already played, with the result that by the end of the tournament the highest-scoring players would have met with stronger opposition than those on lower scores and have hopefully played many of their closest rivals.

Later, with the advent of popular Weekend Swiss tournaments in the 1960s, with more participants and fewer rounds in each tournament, various accelerated versions were introduced. Players would be seeded into two or more groups according to their chess ratings, and players would meet others from the same group in the first round.
Then in the second round, non-winners from each group would be paired down against winners from the next group down and, provided that most of the non-winners from the higher groups were then successful against their opponents from lower groups, the cream would rise to the top more rapidly and the number of players with 100% scores against weaker opposition would be reduced.

    WC draft - A or B?

    Verbrugren
    Trent Robbo Lewis
    Salah Palmer Eze Minteh Rogers
    Haaland Pedro

    Fabianski Mosquera Greaves Stewart

      1. have you seen cyan

Yea I had no intention of getting a Brighton player this week. But in reality, Chelsea and spurs are not bad fixtures. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that:

        - I get at least one Brighton player, because so many people have 2 or 3, especially wildcarders
        - Mitoma is very much in form
        - I would be taking out Kamada, who does have Leicester next, but why even risk Kamada? He isn't nailed, he hasn't returned yet, whereas Mitoma has two immediate very nice fixtures, and is a machine.

Kamada could very well score, and that will suck, but I still think Mitoma is just such a superior pick.

Have you seen his stats? Best out of anyone in the Brighton team for XGI by some distance, 2nd for XA and XG. Also scored and got an assist vs China.

When Mitoma is on a purple match, its a mistake to ignore him.

Yes I have seen his stats. I just wanted you to expand on your post as there's no reasons given.

He's a good pick and solid mins but approx 1m more expensive than other Brighton attackers, he isn't playing central like Pedro/Welbeck and doesn't have other routes to points like set pieces.

                Good pick in isolation.

He may not be cheap enough to enable Salah +Haaland drafts or pay that little extra for Mbeumo/Eze that are considered talismans and tick all the FPL boxes.

Is Havertz a sensible pick given the likely rotation? Ideally I'd have Saka but that would mean no palmer.

For example, which is better on a WC:
    1 - Saka and Watkins/Isak
    2 - Palmer and Havertz

I would've waited until GW6 but my defence needed surgery. I realise arsenal haven't got great games in 4 or 5 but I'd rather select one of them now rather than book a transfer for later

        1. Hairy Potter
          • 9 Years

I think the Spurs fixture is good from an attacking point of view.

I've currently got Havertz and probably keeping through my WC, sometime after GW5. I think I'm fairly settled on keeping Salah over Saka, but Saka is probably the best Arsenal attacking pick. If it wasn't for the Man City fixture, I think a double up on Saka and Havertz isn't a bad way to go longer term.

Maybe Saka and Isak, then move Isak to Havertz in GW5/6? Depends how much you want Palmer.

The rotation I expect to happen due to champions league. Surely Jesus will get some minutes, maybe even sterling up top? I would expect saka to be rotated less. Of course I could be wrong but that's what I expect.

Wont be able to afford Saka, so yea, Havertz is like the one, taking out Isak for him. I would prefer Saka, but yea, not happening at the moment. Maybe Sterling, Trossard or someone else can be an option.
