Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is live for the 2026/27 season, so we’re getting team reveals from a variety of contributors ahead of Gameweek 1.

Next up, Pete A, who won the official FIFA World Cup Fantasy game this summer.

Early-Season Strategy & Team Overview

World Cup Fantasy: Spain win the World Cup, Fernandez red card, Martinez + Romero injuries 4 no Bruno

Unpredictable Landscape

The early fixtures are tough to gauge. Michael Carrick has only been in charge for three months, yet only seven returning Premier League managers have longer tenures. Combined with World Cup fatigue and fresh European commitments, reliability in Gameweek 1 will be low.

Flexible Squad Construction

Early flexibility is crucial to navigate early variance, keeping an active eye on a potential early Wildcard or Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 strategy.

Goalkeepers

  • Senne Lammens (£5.0m): Strong early fixtures with clean-sheet upside. A great candidate for a Bench Boost strategy; he keeps squad flexibility intact without feeling forced into an early Wildcard. Robin Roefs (£5.0m) was another option here, but Lammens offered a safer longer-fixtures build.
  • Bart Verbruggen (£4.5m): Proven reliability with a strong defensive finish last season. Favourable early fixture rotation and high clean-sheet potential. I like Gameweek 1 for a Bench Boost, with Aston Villa’s disrupted attack and Brighton only narrowly beaten 1-0 in their last meeting with the Villans. A value pick in the absence of £4.0m playing ‘keepers.

Defenders

FPL notes: Timber + Calafiori injury latest, Gabriel returns + why Minteh was benched 4

Double Arsenal Defence

Late team news/pre-season line-ups will dictate the final selection, but I want double coverage of the best defence. Arsenal had six games without Gabriel Magalhaes (£8.0m) and as many without William Saliba (£6.0m) in the Premier League last season, so I expect they will be prepared well for the latter’s absence.

  • Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m): Calafiori is my favourite. He brings so much to the attack and I am expecting that he will own that left-back spot to start the season.
  • Ben White (£5.5m): White has been looking good in pre-season, chipping in with an assist, too. I do feel White/Timber could yet be the right-back/right-sided centre-back partnership. It depends on who Arsenal sign but a young right-back could open the door for that, as the key target will be not to overplay either player on their returns from injury.

Talk to me about Marco Palestra - will he start GW1?!

Think you have him mixed up with Marco Polo

Yes, you’d think so. Even if James starts, think Palestra can play LWB. High upside pick, but only in the interim until we know more.

As to article above! No Bruno is just too high a risky strategy, also I don't expect Saka to feature to or be a option until around GW 4 or 5 as will be given extra time to recover after World cup. Not a fan of double Arsenal defence to start as they only have 2 home games in the first 5 fixtures, without Saliba the clean sheet appeal diminishes. Also if planning a GW1 BB why have a Coventry defender away to Arsenal or put a Forest attacker up against a Leeds defender you also own?

Bruno Fernandes played more games and for more minutes at the World Cup than Bakayo Saka.

In the two weeks after Fernandes returned home from the World Cup, Saka spent 75 minutes in a tough and important game vs Norway, followed by a glorified friendly - a pre-season kick about - vs France, in which he showed zero issues. The rest of the time was light training, first class travel, watching football matches and relaxing in five star hotel suites.

To clarify. By “zero issues” I mean “showed no signs of injury and scored a hat-trick”

You cant really compare Bruno with Saka fitness.

Saka hasnt looked properly fit and back where he was for a while now apart from one meaningless game in the world cup

I’m not comparing fitness, I’m debating the comments in the post

“No Bruno is just too high a risky strategy, also I don't expect Saka to feature to or be a option until around GW 4 or 5 as will be given extra time to recover after World Cup”

Saka looked fit. He doesn’t need

that much recovery time post World Cup.

I agree that he hasn’t looked *world class* for over a year now.

It felt like the post was debating “Given the World Cup, Fernandes is better than Saka + £2.5m”

Which I disagree with until we hear Saka is definitely not fit enough, and/or considering thr fact that Arsenal’s alternatives to Saka are wildly better than Manchester United’s alternatives to Fernandes, thus impacting the xMins.

That is, if they both played 90, I would wager that Saka+2.5m is the far superior pick and I don’t think that the World Cup holds any impact here. The biggest impact is Arsenal’s alternatives.

Bench Boost GW1. Try to go different in certain areas with players that can get big hauls. Intend to WC3, FH4.

    Kelleher
    Gabriel Calafiori Dalot
    BrunoF Semenyo Mbeumo MGW Sarr
    J.Pedro DCL

    Sanchez I.Jesus Hume Mitchell

I'm not sold on Sarr this season to be honest mate - think Crystal Palace struggle this season, and a potentially very awkward match in GW1 away to Everton.

Sarr is a very decent pick. In good form too. Considering him myself.

You’re effectively bench boosting DCL and two relegation candidate defenders who are playing against each other.

      Aim higher.

I suspect the odds on a clean sheet for Brentford, Sunderland and Ipswich clean sheets, and Calvert Lewin goals are low.

Of course I could be wrong.

Wonder if more than 4 players will get 200+ pts this season. That's pretty poor from players last season, imo.

    I'm going Bru NO.

    Lammens (Dubravka)
O'Reilly, Pedro Porro, Calafiori (Shaw, Van Ewijk)
Wirtz, Mbeumo, Semenyo, Le Fee (Hughes)
    Haaland, Isak, Joao Pedro

Poor bench, but planning on WC within the first few weeks if needed, probably bench boost after that.

Very similar to my no Bruno draft. You still get 3 MUN but don't have to pay huge amounts. I'm also wavering on Szob but will probably succumb.

I got a 92 and a 94 but I also got "your team has 6 midfielders. You must choose 5 ...etc..etc. But you all know that it is impossible to save a team with 6 midfielders. So, I wouldn't put much faith into FFH RTM app.

Not much change for a long while.

    Kinsky
    White-Maguire-Williams
    Fernandes-Palmer-Szoboszlai-Le Fee-GroB
    Haaland-Pedro

    Palmer-O'Shea-Van Ewijk-K.A

    0.5 million in bank.

Not on bench boost or early wildcard.

    Thoughts or adjustments? I'm thinking

It's great to see such a different draft here. I am on the no Bruno bandwagon as well. I think he's great but the price tag is so high. I think it's interesting that the combination of Salah and Haaland at the beginning of last year was 28.5M and a lot of people said it was too much money for two players and this year the combination of Haaland And Bruno is 27.5M (only 1M difference!) and they are the two most template players in a lot of teams. I'm a huge Saka fan as well but are the minutes really there??

Interested in your thoughts regarding my team: Planm to take Gyko out after GW1

    Kinsky (Verbruggen)
    Calafiori Shaw Gavardiol (Hall, Diop)
    Palmer Mbeumo Wirtz Sarr (Ndiaye)
    Haaland Gyokeres DCL
