Scout Notes – Europa League

A smart finish from rising star Dominic Calvert-Lewin confirms Everton’s progress in the Europa League following a generally uneventful evening in Slovakia.

Ruzomberok 0 Everton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

A Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal settled the second leg of Everton’s Europa League tie with Slovakian side Ruzomberok, with the Toffees now through to the competition’s play-off stage.

The England U19 international came on in the second half and finished smartly from the edge of the area after being released by Davy Klaassen.

Everton controlled a rather drab match, dominating possession and having 12 shots to their hosts’ four, but the lack of overall quality on show was demonstrated by the fact that the Toffees managed only two attempts on target.

Manager Ronald Koeman played four at the back in the first leg, but switched to a three-man defence of skipper Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Michael Keane in Slovakia.

Tom Davies and Leighton Baines were used as wing-backs in a 3-5-2 formation in which Wayne Rooney and Sandro played up front, with Klaassen in the number 10 role just behind them.

Fantasy veteran Baines has consistently produced points as a left-back over the years. Should he spend time this season in a more advanced position, he could become a very attractive option indeed.

As for Davies, who managed two goals and three assists from a limited run in central midfield last year, he might struggle to repeat the feat from a wider and more defensive role. He did, however, impress, bringing an energy and verve notably lacking in Cuco Martina when he played as a right-back in the first leg.

Should Davies be utilised as a right wing-back in the continued absence of Seamus Coleman, it doesn’t look good news for the Fantasy prospects of either Martina or Mason Holgate as 4.5 options in defence.

Jordan Pickford made his debut in the Everton goal and would probably have wished for more to do as he bids to make the number one jersey his own, while up front, Rooney, Sandro and Klaassen again indulged in some nice interplay but produced little in the way of end product.

That was left to Calvert-Lewin, who replaced Sandro and played centrally, with Rooney allowed a freer role. Koeman used a similar tactic in the first match and Rooney looked more comfortable in both ties when not required to operate solely in the centre.

Whether that means Calvert-Lewin could be handed a regular role up front remains to be seen, although Koeman was quick to praise him, and hint at his future, post-match.

“Maybe Dominic feels a bit more comfortable as one of two strikers. He’s strong, he’s fast and he scored a great goal.”

His price – 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.8m in the Sky game – is classic budget third striker material, but how much pitch-time he’ll be handed is the great unknown.

What is beyond doubt is Everton’s daunting start to the domestic season. An opening day visit by Stoke City is the calm before a storm involving last year’s top three and a trip to Man United.

At least the Toffees now have two competitive matches under their belt, and they go into today’s play-off draw with another two-legged tie awaiting them on August 17 and 24.

In domestic terms, the first leg is four days prior to a Gameweek 2 trip to Manchester City, with the second leg taking place two days before a Gameweek 3 visit to Chelsea.

Progress past the play-offs and they will qualify for the group stages of European football’s most gruelling slog, throwing the risk of rotation into the mix of their squad.

Everton: Pickford; Williams, Keane, Jagielka; Davies, Schneiderlin (Barry 81), Gueye, Baines, Klaassen; Sandro (Calvert-Lewin 69), Rooney (Mirallas 86).

Subs not used: Stekelenburg, Martina, Holgate, Lookman.

I'm wavering on Kane & Lukaku

Jesus - looks very good value and so does KDB (but needs funds from Kane). At the moment I have 4.5 Fletcher sat alongside Kane & Lukaku which really helps rest of the team, Kane > Jesus and one other small change would allow me to do say Fletcher > Chicarito

I think Jesus and Chicarito are both potential massive bandwagons that could have a great impact on TV if they score in GW1. Whereas Kane and Lukaku if they score week 1, everyone that wants them already has them and don't think they'll rise quite as rapidly.

    1. Gazpilicueta
      • 10 Years

True, but I think Kane and kaku are more likely to score. Compromise, use my plan, kane Kaku and chicarito up top

But Fletcher > Chico is 2.5m more and that's got to come from somewhere.
        Alli - nope he's staying
        Alonso - definitely not going
Willian - great value at 7.0
Salah - think he's a worthwhile bet and 0.5m cheaper than Mane

Everyone else needs multiple downgrades to find that 2.5m if I keep Kane & Kaku

yeah thats true, I agree with all of these points, I just chose to go without Alli, and fair enough I might pay a high price for that, but I'm hoping Kane will soften the blow. Also Salah, sure he could be great, I am just choosing to put the money in Kaku, I think hes gonna get 30+ League goals this year, maybe the record.

i'm so undecided about my team set-up at the moment, was considering having just Jesus upfront, ditching Kane and Lukaku allows ultra midfield and strong defence - i just don't think Lukaku will score too may for man utd (probably just enough, like Ibra) and not sure how Kane will start or do at Wembley, can give reasonable coverage by having Eriksen+Alli, and can afford likes of KDB/Mane/Salah - looks good on paper, but would be wary of opening day hat-tricks for Kane/Kaku !

Kane and Lukaku are more likely to score than Jesus and Chicharito. I prefer points to price rises.

Think you're overthinking a bit. Step back and think. Kane and Kaku are far more likely to score points than Chicharito and Jesus, and if you're right and Jesus/Chicharito do start firing then you can downgrade easily. If it's the other way round, and Kane scores GW1 and rises to 12.6m, that's commensurate to 13m early on.

What do we think of azpillicueta for 0.5 less than Alonso?
Will he play rwb? Especially if the VVD to Chelsea rumour is true

People linked with Chelsea don't always move there! Over the season no. Also Alex Sandro linked to push Alonso.

Been thinking of different options, was on A, but now thinking of tearing it up and going with B, what do you think guys?
Go ultra heavy upfront with punty midfield? Easy to downgrade a striker to throw funds into midfield if obvious choices show themselves after 2/3 gws

    A
    FORSTER/ elliot
    DANIELS/ TRIPPIER/ BERTRAND/ALONSO/suttner
    ZAHA/WILLIAN/KDB/TADIC/carol
    KANE/LUKAKU/quaner

B (I know, weak mid, but..... Jesus)
    FOSTER/elliot
    DANIELS/ TRIPPIER/ BERTRAND/suttner/hunemeier
    ZAHA/JWP/KDB/GROSS/carol
    KANE/LUKAKU/JESUS

Mourinho will settle for 1/2-0 wins whereas I feel Man City will tear it up in the opening weeks and there will be a lot more goals in that team for Jesus to be a part of.

I have both right now - I only have Lukaku due to fear of his ownership and his captaincy will be sky high in GW1

    A) Mane + KDB + 4.5 fwd
    B) 4.5 mid + Salah + Jesus

No playing 4.5 fwds is making me lean towards B

I'm no City fan but I think walker is nailed, stones nailed definitely with 3 atb but with back four he isn't and Danilo only nailed till mendy comes back from injury.

Looks like we're starting that mad week where we get 1000's of people that we won't see again all year posting and asking Q's. I try and reply to a random selection, because I would like replies to my posts too and got to have give and take, but I'm strongly influenced to reply to those that have paid the £12.50 for membership (or names that I recognise as regular contributors) and access to the excellent articles that give insight to many of the public replies.

Follow up question to my KDB or Alli from earlier...

Is Sterling a good alternative to KDB? He seems to have had a good pre season, but how much of a concern is rotation?

    1. Bun Rab
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 12 Years

No, Sterling is more likely to be rotated. KDB has set pieces too, more chances of points.

    2. Gazpilicueta
      • 10 Years

He's a completely different player, sure he might score well, the thing with kdb is, he feels like good city cover because he is so involved in everything. Sterling might end up on the end of a few balls, but if that's what u want, Sergio and Jesus would both be better picks, imo
