The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

This was meant to be the day that would see talent from the north London clubs cause tremors in the Fantasy Premier League ranks and market place. Instead, both Spurs and Arsenal fell flat – to varying degrees of disaster.

Harry Kane had the opportunity to transform the Fantasy Football landscape. Not only could he have buried the August goal hoodoo, but he could also have delivered points for the 16.1% who captained him to capitalise on the failings of others – including Romelu Lukaku’s zero point score.

Once again he blanked. Once again the numbers he produced defied belief.

Kane had ten attempts on goal, seven from inside the box. For the second match running, he has surpassed his personal record for the number of shots in a single Premier League match without scoring.

This season Kane has fired just 25% of his efforts on target with a zero conversion rate. His rates for both in 2016/17 were 52% and 26% respectively.

According to certain statistical models, he should have 2.5 goals by now. But he hasn’t. He’s got nothing, and he’s being ushered out of FPL squads at a pace.

To compound matters, both Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool provided goal and assist returns with maximum bonus to overtake Lukaku in the forward standings.

They provide an obvious exit route for those left feeling decidedly uneasy about Kane’s extraordinary three-match drought.

Dismissing talk of the August “curse”, there is perhaps another reason behind this sorry spell: maybe Spurs really are destined to struggle at Wembley.

We have just two “home” matches to go on – the first against the champions Chelsea, while it should also be noted that Spurs only edged out Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane last season.

However, there is building momentum behind the theory that Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lack intensity and that sides will raise their game on visiting Wembley.

With Swansea City and Bournemouth the next two opponents due to arrive, we will surely have more evidence soon. Falter against that pair, and our confidence in Kane and Spurs’ other key assets – Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli – will plummet.

While it’s a testing trip to Everton to come next, those forthcoming home fixtures, coupled with the unfeasible and record-breaking numbers – may convince many Kane owners to sit on their hands, even when faced with cheaper and more profitable temptations.

Spurs toiled, but their suffering pales in significance next to the cataclysmic display delivered by Arsenal at Anfield.

Like Kane, Alexis Sanchez had the opportunity to put Fantasy managers in a spin. Instead, he played a 60-minute role in a farcical Gunners performance which may actually transpire to be his last for the club.

It remains to be seen if Sanchez stays in the Premier League to be a factor in our season. For now, he played his part in making Liverpool’s attacking assets seem irresistible, as the aforementioned Firmino pulled the strings for both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to step up with further hauls.

It appears that there is still one thing we can all rely on as Fantasy managers: Liverpool will present us with the dilemma of putting many attacking eggs in a single basket.

With Kane – our most bankable scorer currently defying all odds to misfire – perhaps we should just embrace that “problem”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So what do you think is going on with Kane? You cant even say he's a slow starter. Hes been playing well and his stats are as good as when he is scoring. Minus of course one key little stat.

Best striker in the prem and he'll score the most goals again.

Tired of looking into stats. Okay he's had a lot of shots but he hasn't scored them. I chose him over Lukaku at the start, when my gut feeling was Lukaku all along, only because I was scared of Kane. Now though, 12.5m not performing, not worth it imo. Better options out there and can then upgrade else where.

He will but so will Lukaku, so will Morata, so will Lacazette. Everyone has Kane in their teams because they're scared of him. Why should we be? 12.5m player who yes has won the golden boot 2 seasons in a row, but he's not performing. If any other player blanked for 3 weeks, you would want them out. Besides, I think Lukaku will win the golden boot this season, not Kane

Kane late flurry of goals made his tally look better than it was. No need to be scared imo. Plus this year's CL draw is brutal

Totally agree with this, whats the point of paying 12.5m for a player who you need to rely on scoring every single week and simply does not provide value? He's like any other player, blanking = get rid of the player.

WC?i don't, i think this change of stadium really effects things, and whilst most people hink he'll still be top scorer, i strongly however do not, he just won't be the golden boot winner this season.

But are you actually gonna get rid? I couldnt do that. You know he will have a 4 goals game, several 2 goal games and definitely challenge for the golden boot.

Its just strange that is so snake bitten in August. Theres no logical reason why.

How did Joselu look against West Ham?? I'm thinking that he might be a good 3rd fwd enabler capable of scoring points when needed, although I guess he might be rotated with Gayle and Mitrovic a bit

Yeah that's what I was thinking, surely it means that he's nailed on, right? He also had very good attacking stats in the limited game time he got against Huddersfield I heard. Not sure about this GW as I didn't watch the game, but their fixtures look great.

      joselu looked good(ritchie better)
Gayle (and his 'confidence hamstrings') seem to be working himself out of the team

Having to play Carroll isn't ideal. KDB to Salah (prefer Mane slightly but you'd need the extra 0.6) and RLC to someone that costs 6.0. (undecided here - sample size too small to decide on Richarlison/Jese/Ritchie etc)

    Foster - Elliot

Jones - Mbemba - Bertrand (Daniels - Long)

Pogba - Ritchie - Ozil (Put him in for KDB last night) - Tadic (Carroll)

    Lukaku - Kane - Firmino

I was in a weird mood last night and put Ozil in for KDB which was a waste of time and one of the worst decisions I've made on this game. Dont want Kane anymore. Can get Cedric instead of Bertrand. Dont want Ozil. Dont want Ritchie or Tadic. Dont want Daniels.

Just did Kane & Mounie to Morata & Firmino. And, honestly, I don't feel that badly about it. I honestly believe that the duo of Morata & Firmino, over the long haul, will well outscore Kane & Mounie (or Kane plus any other 6.0 forward). Plus, I still have Lukaku to captain who looks to at least push Kane for the Golden Boot...or Morata...or Firmino.

Plus, I'm going to get at least a 0.1 rise from both, if not a 0.2 or 0.3 during the international break while not losing at least 0.1 from an inevitable Kane drop.

And, sure, it may backfire in the end, but I think that a very reasonable case can be made that even if Kane goes wild over a stretch (like he tends to do), that a Morata/Firmino partnership will more than make up for it.

    De Gea (Elliot)
    Cedric Jagielka Bertrand (Lindelof) (mbemba)

    Cicharito Lukaku Firmino

Hey I'm asking for a friend. Would you Wildcard this team or would you slowly change the team?

I think that Lindelof, Kante and Allen are critical players to remove from the team. Cedric and KDB would be moderate type players to remove.

        No. Do not wildcard.
        Keepers are good
Mid is solid other than Kante
        Forwards are fine

That price is rough, to be honest. Not a lot of great options. Brunt, maybe? Completely nailed on, will get CS and bonus points. Will throw in an assist and goal every once-in-a-while too.

I dunno but bearing in mind morata plays Arsenal gwk 5, i wouldn't be surprised if he was 10.4 or 10.5 by gwk 6

    DDG, Elliot
    Danilo, Dawson, Yoshida, Mee, Long
    Eriksen, Salah, Atsu, Carrol, Mhiki
    Lukaku, Kane, Mounie

    1FT, 0.5M in bank

    1 - Danilo --> Naughton/HUD
    2 - Eriksen -> Mane

    4 - Save FT

Thanks for all the suggestion, I will hold on Kane cause he is one of the best nailed striker and Spurs fixture is strong from GW5.

My other attacking player is Lukaku, Chicarito, Eriksen, Salah and Mkhi.

    Front three: Lukaku(C) + Lacazette + Chicarito = 2 points.
I wanted Eriksen so my transfer for a hit was: Firmino + Willian to Chicarito + Eriksen. Cost me 15 points lol.
    A GW rank of 3.7m 🙁
Anybody in the DZ do worse?

Wow, bad luck.Firmino to Chicharito was a bit too knee-jerky, even if it was obviously to fund Eriksen. I scored a massive 45 points for a GW rank of just inside 2 mil 😀

It was a terrible move in hindsight mate! The whole having no Spurs v BUR scared me. Funny enough my team is not terrible, going forward, considering that I only scored 27 points! 45, massive to me mate ha!!

Same here, I made a transfer with Spurs vs. Burnley in mind - Davies in for Bellerin, when I could've brought in United defence. Still, reasonably confident going forward. Eriksen will definitely come good for you.

How bad were ARS yesterday mate! Rid of Bell looks a great move!
LIV attack looking scary now too but think I will go without for the time being. Always half tempted to wilcard but still not enough data yet and I was knee jerky enough last week!
