Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 6

Everton’s exceptional form and fixtures find their assets soaring in our Watchlist reckoning this week. Mid-price defensive assets play partner to the attacking verve of Leighton Baines, while up front, our options are plentiful. Too plentiful.

Our Watchlist rankings have been updated and can be found in your sidebar. Read on for the blurb on the key movers this week…

Goalkeepers

Simon Mignolet surges clear in our goalkeeper rankings. There are several factors at play here. Firstly, there’s little doubt that Martin O’Neill has his side playing tight, controlled football – if somewhat unambitious in attacking terms. Sunderland’s fixtures are also fairly favourable, handing the back four home encounters with Wigan, Newcastle and Aston Villa in the next five. Thirdly, while the personnel in O’Neill’s back four is hard to pin down following the injury to Carlos Cuellar, Mignolet appears to offer a secure option at a decent price.

West Brom’s Ben Foster continues to offer value and is retained in second spot in our rankings. Like Sunderland, West Brom have emerged as miserly mid-price contenders and Foster should benefit from his forthcoming fixtures to offer further returns. Unlike Mignolet, however, Foster could lose out in some squads to attractive options in the back four – namely Gareth McAuley and Liam Ridgewell.

Both Merseyside clubs have fixtures that promise defensive returns, although the duo have factors that keep Tim Howard and Jose Reina out of the top places in our rankings. Howard will surely play second fiddle to Leighton Baines in our lineups, with further slots spared for the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic. As for Reina, his defence looks set to be ravaged by injury, although home encounters with Stoke and Reading in the next three could still offer short-term benefits.

West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen takes a tumble then, with fixtures stiffening somewhat, while Stoke’s Asmir Begovic is hovering. He looks a very strong option, along with Newcastle’s Tim Krul (when fit), once Gameweek 8 has passed.

Defenders

Leighton Baines has been on top of our Watchlist rankings for three weeks and, in the past two Gameweeks, has shown just why. Early adopters have benefited from a goal and assist in consecutive games, in addition to Saturday’s clean sheet at the Liberty. With fixtures flourishing, Baines looks assured of further returns and is undisputed as the must-have defender right now.

The West Brom defence continues to offer exceptional value with a tit-for-tat battle rumbling between the options – Gareth McAuley, Liam Ridgewell and even Jonas Olsson. The superior of the three is hard to predict but it’s clear that having one of this trio for the coming weeks looks likely to be profitable.

We’re taking a punt on Liverpool’s Glen Johnson, despite injuries in Brendan Rodgers’ back four and a poor string of results. Liverpool could well turn the corner over the next three Gameweeks, however, and Johnson looks set to be in profit from clean sheets with the potential for attacking returns. He’s been a strong influence coming forward in recent weeks and could make a decent differential over the upcoming trio of fixtures.

John O’Shea is your assured option in the Sunderland back four should you neglect the Mignolet option, while Vincent Kompany continues to be a presence in the top echelons of our rankings, despite the continued struggle for clean sheets. City’s fixtures are by far the best amongst the top clubs and, with Roberto Mancini sounding determined to solve defensive lapses, we see fortunes turning for Kompany in the next month.

Stoke’s Robert Huth and Fulham’s John Arne Riise are your differentials further down the rankings. Both will rely on attacking returns in the short-term, although Huth’s fixtures will lighten considerably from Gameweek 8 onwards.

Midfielders

Having opted for Steven Pienaar ahead of Marouane Fellaini last week we are forced to backtrack and reinstate the Belgian this time around. Fellaini climbs to the pinnacle of our midfield rankings, toppling the big guns on the back of his attacking role and strong returns thus far. Fixtures remain favourable and, despite Jelavic’s return from injury, we see Fellaini remaining a factor up top as he continues to look unplayable.

We’ve taken the unprecedented step to also included Pienaar in the rankings, such is the form being shown by David Moyes’ side. The likes of Gareth Bale and Santi Cazorla rank above the South African, while Eden Hazard suffers a decline as form and fixtures factor against him.

Swansea’s Michu also drops with form but has the fixtures to maintain his rank in the short-term, holding off the charge from West Ham’s Kevin Nolan who has shown consistency, even with Andy Carroll sidelined.

Lower down the rankings, both Raheem Sterling and Alex Kacaniklic offer value differentials for the coming weeks. Sterling, in particular, looks a great route to Liverpool’s next three fixtures.

Forwards

Our established heavy-hitting top two come under real threat as a result of recent rotation, with Carlos Tevez suffering a drop, allowing both Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert to climb above him in our reckoning. To be fair, all three have very strong fixtures to come, although the rotation doubt hanging over Tevez is a concern. Berbatov and Lambert look assured of starts, will be on spot-kicks and have the fixture to flourish for many weeks.

Tevez is still the cover option of choice within the City ranks, although tonight’s start in the Capital One Cup gives further cause for concern. Sergio Aguero could well threaten to replace him in the Watchlist from next weekend, while Yaya Toure continues to offer the only viable option in midfield while David Silva recovers his sharpness and Samir Nasri remains sidelined. City are a potential problem for Fantasy managers right now – excellent fixtures but with instability and uncertainty throughout the lineup.

Back to the rankings and Robin Van Persie is struggling to hold his top spot, particularly with United facing stiff opposition in the coming weeks. We’re banking on the Dutchman to retain his starts and continue to deliver goals, having notched five already in United colours.

There are great options lower down, too. Nikica Jelavic is only kept from our top three by the fact that there are such strong midfield options offering good Everton cover. Jermain Defoe’s form has him hold strong, while Demba Ba has also demonstrated consistent returns to offer another mid-price option. With Steven Fletcher also chipping in with four strikes from as many shots on goal, it’s clear that we’re currently spoilt for choice in this area of our squads. Configuring the right trio looks both vital and decidedly tricky.

Finally, we’re backing Luis Suarez to finally break out and offer yet another alternative over the next month. He travels to Carrow Road this weekend, the scene of a hat-trick last term, which included a spectacular 50-yard effort. The omens are good for Suarez, then, before Stoke and Reading turn up at Anfield in Gameweeks 7 and 8.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Any help please.

    Pick two to play ;

Gunter (NEW), Boyce (sun), Demel (qpr), Davies (stk).

I'm currently favouring Boyce just because of his impressive attacking stuff that he does.

    Thanks

Am thinking of hit to get rid of Torrez(or Graham) as in all likelihood both will lose value this week while players like Berbatov will rise at least .1. I also think Berb is more likely to score at home against Man C that Torrez is against Arsenal away. Conservative mind says not to give away pts but it seems like bad business given the fact that the changes I need to make will be tough to do one at a time on FTs.

Quick poll then on Torrez out for Berbs for -4.

It would also leave be with just under 4M bank to strengthen other areas in the coming weeks.

Well I think Berb is a good choice on the whole. But I wouldn't personally get him in for a hit Vs Man City. He needs to score a goal for you to break even.
I know City are conceding goals atm but it's gotta stop soon.

My thinking is that over the next 4 weeks Berb's fixtures look much more favourable than those of Torrez. The money gained via price rises and falls would also be a factor.

Man City have been average at the back and FUL are a decent team at home. That being said he doesn't have to pay you back in one week now do he? I have got Berbs in for a hit this week myself.

Why do you think Mancini believes Tevez is his best? If so, he wouldn't have played 120 tonight.

Silva, Toure and Aguero not even on the squad. Tevez plays 120. Seems to me Mancini is more than comfortable playing without Tevez.

I predict MCI runs out Dzeko along with Aguero out front Saturday.

A bit of analysis on Fellaini vs. Pienaar.

Pienaar played just under 14 games (1254 minutes) last season and produced 11 attacking returns in total. He also picked up 12 bonus points.

Fellaini played about 31 games (2857 minutes) last season and produced 8 attacking returns in total. He picked up 6 Bonus points in total.

Pienaar also scored more goals (4 to Fellaini's 3) in that short time he was on the pitch.

I see his worth, but he's also got 2 of his goals by scoring with his head from set pieces...this is not necessarily because of his 'more attacking role', he would always be there for free kicks/corners. He's a decent punt no doubt but with Mirallas, Jelavic, Anichebe, Naismith there to score goals he's not getting free range of the scoring opportunities.

What are you talking about? He's had more efforts than any other midfielder. 23 shots on goal, 21 from inside the area. He is playing as a second striker.

Why? Everton have been superb and made their best start to a season in forever. A large part of that success has been down to Fellaini's performances and ability to link the play from his new position. What reason would Moyes have to disrupt that league momentum?

Why? Because Moyes played him CM in the League Cup to allow fringe players show what they've got in the more advanced positions?
No way...Fellaini will stay CAM in the PL.

I think I might jump the gun early in anticipation that Tevez's game time will come into serious question over the next few weeks with CL and the competition amongst the Citeh forward ranks, it seems inevitable that he will be rested this weekend as well. Its got to be either Lambert or Ba for me. RVP may even be in a similar boat once Rooney returns so here is my plan

    Tevez ---> Lambert FT

Some time down the track RVP ---> Ba (once the fixtures clear up)

Alternatively I could sell Hazard to HBA after the Norwich game in case Aguero or someone like that becomes a good forward option to replace RVP if indeed he becomes a rotation risk.

    Good plan?

I like your thinking but I'm not sure about selling RVP unless he's injured or Rooney comes back firing on all cylinders (which I very much doubt).
I'm also thinking Hazard out but to Walcott assuming he gets his wish to be Arsenal's striker.
They are lacking in that area so it may well happen.

The only one which is urgent for me at the moment is Tevez.

Aguero clearly needs gametime, yet he didn't play tonight. He's a certainty to start at the weekend and my guess is that it'll be Silva just in behind and an extra body, probably Barry, in midfield. Mancini will want to get back to basics and that means clean sheets.

Are you that concerned with Tevez`s gametime? Dortmund might be a good place for Dzeko as he played years in the Bundesliga, and against the physichal strength of their defence he might feel the need to have some size himself. I can totally see a 4-2-3-1 formation with Tevez/Silva/Sinclair and Aguero up front.

That is the big question. If he had someone to play wide right then Silva would have probably played through the middle. I'm not convinced that Tevez won't start Saturday. Aguero essentially played LW last weekend anyway, Sinclair was window dressing and duplicated Martinez only protecting Clichy.

Tevez---Balo---Aguero would be lethal until Nasri is healthy.

I don't think he can get anymore defensive a squad than the one he had last weekend against Arsenal. I have a hunch that Mancini might be better off playing Kolarov in the position he tried Sinclair...sort of like the way Wenger plays Santos from time to time.

I'm tempted to keep Fletcher in my WC team and transfer him out for Berb soon. But is it wise to be making plans to transfer out players within 1/2 weeks of your WC...clearly not the best plan but I just think Fletch is captain material this weekend.

Also I think I might go Tevez > Aguero as it's pretty obvious Aguero will be a huge differential and score a good few in the coming weeks.

I'm captaining Fletch this week, but I already had him. Not sure if I would bring him in on a WC with a view to shipping out a few weeks later. You will find other problems no doubt and end up taking an unnecessary hit

I have Distin, but it is worth switching to Baines for a hit?

Obviously Distin could play and they both could end up with 6 pts which would obviously mean the change would backfire, but I’m worried that Heitinga plays and Baines gets a clean sheet and attacking returns.

my other change is gonna be Tevez > jelavic.

I’m a risk taker with this game anyway so I think I’m gonna go ahead with the changes!

Anyone getting Mirallas as a differential? He’s looked sharp in recent weeks and is just as likely to register points as Fellaini, Pienaar and Jelavic.

Maybe you should just get Distin, Baines, Jelavic and Mirallas as a big foursome differential?

Please don't switch to Baines for a hit, it's just crazy talk. Mirrallas is tempting but I went for a top heavy attack in the end: Aguero Fletcher VP :/ Kind of regret not getting in Lambert but I'm def getting Ramirez.

True, what I meant was Aguero would make way if I were to get in Lambert/Mirallas/Ba etc as I'm sticking with Fletcher for now. And I do reckon my forward line is in one of the priciest in comparison to most other teams because of lower priced forwards being on fire atm.

Aguero is just back from a potentially serious injury don;t forget

and Tevez was rested at the weekend. That is City's best partnership, they haven't even started a game together yet (opening day aside) will Mancini really leave it until the CL to start them together for the first time this season? Or give them both a game in a tricky (and probably must win) game at Fulham and take 1 or both off early if the game is in the bag?

C - if Berbatov was 7.5m he'd still be considered value.

Also, plenty of scope for injuries in Wednesday's games so don't chase the 0.1m.

What's your FPL highlight of the fledgling season? Here's mine.

On the second Friday of my international break WC, I waited up 'til 3.20am in eager anticipation.
Dyer rose again.....oh, the joy! I made that extra 0.1m that I had wished and prayed for.

I used the extra 0.1m to complete my WC team with that final killer move. You know the one that will astound your mini-league rivals and propel you up the rankings? Yep, that one 😉

I transferred out Defoe and got in Adebayor.

    Screw you Nathan Dyer.

    Cuellar --->Nelsen or Gorkss?

I need 0.5M cash to do Ivan--->Baines. Will be for no hit. I have Demel and Davies at 4M and don't see Clyne as a worthwile option.

I would say Gorkss. With a 3.9 million defender you're only going to be playing him in emergencies. I don't think there's that much between QPR/Reading in terms of clean sheets and Nelsen will have to fight for his place once all of QPR's players are fit.

      Nelsen under threat from Mbia?
Gorkks under threat from Mariappa? Maybe go for Gunter, he likes to bomb forward.
We're in scraping the barrel territory here though!

I have no clue about Mbia hence why I am asking.

Should have added when I lose Michu I will look to use the profit to upgrade a budget defender, so whoever I bring in will only be a temporary solution

I had the same decision on my WC 2 weeks ago and went with Gunter over Gorkks after comparing them in the members stats.
I agree with you about Clyne, I think SOU will concede 3+ goals a lot this season.

Dzeko will start the Dortmund CL game, given his German league background.
Aguero missed tonight so will start vs Fulham.
Tevez likely to be preferred in Europe over Balotelli?

Resulting in Aguero and Balotelli to start this weekend.

Only doubt in my mind is with the Fulham game being an away fixture, Tevez's work rate may be preferred over Balotelli. That would indicate Dzeko and Balotelli to start vs Dortmund, which is unlikely hence the above conclusion.

you know professional footballers can play more than 1 game a week right? ever heard of the world cup? euros? christmas period? i agree with a lot of your reasoning, but just because one starts one game doesn't mean someone else HAS to start the next. it's early in the season and everyone is fresh
