Scout Scribbles – Wednesday Friendlies Round Up

Bojan Krkic scores for the third successive match as Stoke brush aside Real Betis at the Britannia. Elsewhere, Everton winless summer continues with a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo, with Aiden McGeady grabbing the Toffees’ only goal:

Bojan Strikes Again for Potters
Stoke’s summer signing from Barcelona continued his excellent pre-season form by scoring for the third time in as many appearances last night. Bojan was fielded on the right of a 4-2-3-1 formation against Real Betis, with Stephen Ireland behind lone forward Mame Biram Diouf and Marko Arnautovic on the left – the new boy also played a part in the hosts’ first in a 2-0 triumph after playing in Phil Bardsley, who provided the assist for fellow full-back Erik Pieters.

Available for 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Bojan’s ownership has noticeably risen over the last few days as Fantasy managers take advantage of his budget price tag. Now sitting in over 10% of FPL teams, the Spaniard is the ninth most popular frontman thus far and the bandwagon is certainly backed by the Potters’ opening fixtures – Mark Hughes’ side play host to (AVL, LEI, NEW, SWA, WHM, BUR) in the first 12 Gameweeks in a run that pits them against just three of last season’s top eight over that period.

Certainly, there’s no questioning Bojan’s form and, as the highlights against Schalke,Blackburn and Betis show, his strikes have been far more than mere tap-ins. The main downside is the poor away form that saw Hughes’ side scored just 18 times on their travels last season; many owners may be persuaded to rotate the Spaniard on the road unless he can inspire a turnaround in fortunes.

After the game, Hughes was understandably enthused by the 24-year-old’s display and reckons he’ll become more influential as the months progress:

“He’s a good player, but we knew that when we were trying to bring him here in the summer. He has grabbed the headlines again and rightly so because he put in another really good performance and capped it off with another superbly taken goal. We can probably exploit his abilities in an even better way, but I am sure that will happen the more we play him and the more the other lads and him become accustomed to what they are each trying to do. It is still early days with him and there is a lot of work to be done yet, but from what we have seen so far we are really encouraged because he has come in and made a good impression on everybody here at the club.”

In terms of team selection, Hughes continues to ease Geoff Cameron and Peter Odemwingie into action after both featured in the summer World Cup. After handing the duo their first taste of action at the weekend, the Potters boss threw the pair on after the break and while Cameron (at 4.5 in FPL) may yet nail down the right-back berth in the long run, Bardsley seems to be in the driving seat after featuring throughout pre-season. Hughes’ decision to pair Ryan Shawcross with Marc Wilson at centre-half was somewhat surprising – Robert Huth was afforded just six minutes off the bench, coming on as a late sub for the injured Marc Muniesa.

McGeady Nets in Toffees Loss
It’s four summer friendlies without a win for the Toffees after last night’s 3-1 home loss to Celta Vigo. At the back, Roberto Martinez was without Seamus Coleman due to a hamstring problem once again, while the Toffees boss chose to rest Phil Jagielka, affording John Stones the chance to partner Sylvain Distin in central defence. Furthermore, with both Leighton Baines and Tim Howard fielded for 45 minutes apiece, it’s fair to say the Merseysiders’ backline was far from full strength last night. Further up the field, Martinez continued with Steven Naismith as the lone striker, though Romelu Lukaku is expected to join the action next weekend in the final summer friendly against SC Paderborn, while Ross Barkley hit the woodwork in his first full 90 minutes of the summer.

A disappointing result, then, though Martinez’ under-strength backline goes some way to explaining the capitulation – nonetheless, Everton’s form is a little disconcerting ahead of games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace, Liverpool and United in the opening seven fixtures.

After the game, the Toffees boss explained why he chose to rest Jagielka and Steven Pienaar for the loss:

“Phil and Stevie were involved on Sunday at Goodison and it was always the plan to work through the week and make sure they are ready for the game in Germany [against SC Paderborn] on Saturday.”

    so 2 questions really;

Do people think that Jose Enrique will be first choice left back for Liverpool this year, prior to last year he has pretty good history in fantasy football and at 5m if he plays and looks sharp he could be a good buy,

Also has anyone seen much of Tadic in pre-season for Southampton or while he was at Twente. Is he likely to be scoring and assisting for them and does he take set pieces? I don’t really know much about Southampton this year lots of change.

I think people are really underestimating Southampton. Defensively they have lost a full back, a centre back and a benched full back. They'll sign a new CB certainly. So I wouldn't be pushed yet.

He plays just behind Diouf/Crouch, not a striker to be exact 😉

He was really hyped up when he was younger, youngest player to start for Barca I think, Broke messi's record. Was some player, then kinda fizzled out after he started play first team football. Went on loan to a bunch of teams, wasn't fantastic.

Thing is after being hyped up so much, and looking so much like an exciting prospectNow this is his last chance to shine at Stoke, last chance saloon. I'm sure he'll come good, or so I hope 😉 5.5m forward, fantastic fixtures, great pre season form. I'm on board. ( was already on board since he arrived 😉 )

He was pretty awesome for Barcelona in his first season, had excellent scoring stats too for that age. Difficult to say what exactly went wrong with him, but no doubt there's a lot of talent in that kid, more than in those other mentioned players together.

just checked his fixtures and it looks like he might be worth monitoring for the first 3 games as two of those are tricky, if he does well in those then deff worth considering after as their fixtures are great, By then I might be forced into losing Jovetic to a nice easy swap.

Hutton - been getting gametime and possible wing back, hence more attacking points. Minus - this is Villa.
Wisdom - getting some gametime at WBA. The Costa Rican may play in midfield, so could be nailed on.
Moore - young Leicester defender who bright things are thought of. Lost his place last year but looks to have gotten it back
Duff - old centre half. Could be guarenteed a spot if Burenley don't sign another defender.

    4.5 defenders (starters without doubts)

Taylor - now nailed on due to Davies departure
Vlaar - looks to be stayig at Villa. Will play.
Coloccini - nailed on for Newcastle
Williamson - POTY for Newcastle last year (I think) and has started last 2 games, dislodging Taylor and Mbwia
O'Shea - will play - more certanties in Sunderland defence than in goal
Brown - but will be injured very soon
Van aanholt - attacking full back who will play
Jones - new signing and likely to slot right in.
    Chester - Bruce loves him
Ferdinand - they must be paying him a packet and he loves Harry and Harry loves him.
Pocognoli - first choice left back at WBA. More guarenteed than Wisdom.

    4.5 Mids

Marney - will play most likely and had decent stats in Championship
Albrighton - there are no guarentees with his game time. He COULD play and be very effective as stats for Villa (when he played) suggest, but it's still a risk.

    5.0 Mids

Davis - has some set piece duties if Tadic doesn't play. Decent point score last year. More likely to play than JWP who is vying with others for a starting berth (new signing plus GAston)
Dorrans - on pens and signed a new contract that suggests he'll play.
Allen - has been impressing in training for Liverpool more than any other player. Has got himself in top notch fitness. Rodgers loves him. Not 'nailed on' though, but likely to get some game time. Maybe too much of risk compared to the other two here.

5.5 forwards (no likely starters below this price)

Bojan - in cracking form in pre-season and looks 'nailed on'.
Nugent - on pens and likely to start but Ulloa could threaten his place.

    ** Attention would-be Siggy rotators **

Siggy scored 6 of his 7 goals away from home in his legendary half-season for Swansea in 2012

On the other hand, they were mostly against easier sides: (wba, wig, ful, tot, BLA) and his loan period contained a lot of tough home fixtures (CHE, MCI, EVE, MUN, LIV) but he still blanked against (NOR, NEW & WOL).

I don't think I would recommend any attacking rotation. I just don't believe in it.

Or maybe, I think the anguish of inevitable benched points outweighs any tangible benefits. If you're made of more sanguine stuff, then maybe you can shrug off the benched points and be happy when it works.

Good Afternoon. I would like to draw your attention to the curious case of the Cheap Awayday Midfielder, or “CAMF”, as we shall call it.

This is the virulent disease that mid - to low-priced midfielders get, sometimes called Bashful Bonus Nabbing, or Not Tonight Josephinitis, the Josephines alluded to, being the frustrated Home Supporters. CAMF.

The symptoms of CAMF have been well documented. As soon as the player gets on the Away Coach, their shyness falls away like scales from a dead fish, they start to give their Centre Forward the leery eye, they nudge their scoring Centre Back in the ribs with a wink; and when they get on the field of play they come all over with the flashy - but now suddenly accurate backheels - and start spraying around deadly crossfield balls with all the panache of a modern Charlie George.

The incredibly painful effects are well-known, and do not need detailed documentation here. Suffice to say, the prognosis is poor scores, a bench with points “hanging out the back of it”, gnashing teeth, wailing fantasy players, clumps of hair interfering with the proper function of keyboards, casual transfers often done too early, and many, many other sorts of mayhem which shall remain thankfully private.

We believe that the toxic virus CAMF is both contagious and infectious. The first known carrier is a certain Moses, but both Sigurdsson and Ben Arfa are confirmed with it, and we are sure that it will spread further.

          THERE IS NO CURE, PRESENTLY.

i think one thing we might be under-estimating is playing under rodgers compared to playing under monk. i mean for starters there's a worry monk will play a 442, not ideal for siggy at all, he basically had a free role under rodgers

I have worried about this but had my feeble mind turned by naysayers, pooh-poohing my naysaying. And his pre-season debut brace.

Thank you Roscola. Have been thinking of this, but not keenly enough to actually go and check it.

      Siggy-rotation not in plans then.

A rotation based on opposition rather than purely home/away might work then?

i.e - pick Siggy unless he's playing one of the top 6. Even then, if he's at home still pick him. (On the basis that Stoke are crap away from home, so Bojan will have even less chance of scoring than Siggy).

      Sounds like a plan!

Indeed.. but at 10.5 is he a must have for the start of the season?

Compared to Rooney, he isn't a must have.
50/50 for me in GW1. Must better midfield without him.

          a) Rooney Jovetic/Dzeko Bojan

          b) Rooney Costa Bojan (Less $$ for high quality mf)

With quality mf available is it worthwhile to spend on Costa!

Jon Flanagan is injured, Liverpool play on Sunday so whoever plays that game is likely to play against Southampton, Liverpool are actively seeking a new left back though.

Mariappa is currently expected to start though Pulis is said to be looking for a new full back.

    A: sanchez, fabregas and lukaku

    or

    B: Ramsey, Sterling/Eriksen and Costa

Have A at the moment, but B is looking more and more tempting..

I think I'd go B to start with, but A might be better long term.

Lukaku's first 7 fixtures look tough.
Fab might well be asked to sit a bit deeper
Sanchez might (only might) take time to adapt - true of Costa too

Pretty sure that Lukaku and Sanchez will be template buys by Christmas though.

So do people think Siggy will automatically play the same role he played 2 years ago? They have a different manager, different players and the system won't be the same imo.

There isone reason i would never consider Yaya. I have mot heard it mentioned before but its Lampard

He wont play every game , but could play a fair amount, could even be on penalties when on the pitch

Lampard will get similiar amount of gametime to a Milner or Javi Garcia. Will hardly impact the nailed-on players
