Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 34 – The Strong

We turn our attentions to the upcoming fixture list now and assess those sides with some favourable schedules over the next four-to-five Gameweeks. The upcoming double plays a part in our thinking, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester offering reason to retain their chief assets for the run-in.

CHELSEA

frisking
Jose Mourinho’s tactical masterclass against United ensured that the Blues are now just two wins away from lifting the title – a feat they could potentially complete this Gameweek courtesy of their double-header. A crucial showdown with second-placed Arsenal is first up, followed by a trip to relegation battlers Leicester, and most managers are likely to be holding at least two of the Blues’ assets prior to Saturday’s deadline. Beyond that, the Londoners are offered three favourable fixtures in the run-in (CPL, wba, SUN) to deliver the points again.

With Mourinho clearly happy to shut up shop and grind out results, doubling up on Chelsea’s rearguard looks a worthwhile option. Branislav Ivanovic is assured for most courtesy of his threat going forward, whilst John Terry also looks likely to deliver the points and may partner the Serb in a number of side’s backlines. Thibaut Courtois is also worth considering here as a result of his more economical 5.9 price tag.

In the middle of the park, Eden Hazard’s storming form has shown no sign of abating, with the Belgian’s winner against United taking his recent tally to three goals and two assists in his previous four appearances. He, too, should be nailed on for most, though Cesc Fabregas is also in the frame for inclusion having registered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks. The 9.3-rated Spaniard’s prospects could also be aided by his past experience in the false nine role with his national side and Barcelona, as Mourinho may head into the Gunners clash without a recognised striker and be forced into a tactical reshuffle. Should one of Didier Drogba or Loic Remy prove their fitness in time, however, they will also throw their hats into the ring, with both appealing as differential forward options for the double, providing Diego Costa remains on the sidelines.

LIVERPOOL

frisking
Dumped out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers’ outfit now resume league duties as they continue their push for Champions League football next season. Fantasy managers are sure to be scrambling for their headline assets prior to Saturday’s deadline with a double Gameweek now on the cards that offers two promising away dates at West Brom and Hull, though the schedule beyond that suggests that those who choose to invest should consider retaining their picks for the remainder of the campaign, with home clashes against QPR and Crystal Palace coming up in the final four Gameweeks.

With the best defensive record of any Premier League side in 2015, having earned eight clean sheets this calendar year, it’s more than a little surprising that the most popular option in the Reds’ rearguard currently sits on an ownership of just 9.5%. We can expect to see a hike in interest around the likes of Martin Skrtel and Simon Mignolet going into this weekend, however; Skrtel has collected 22 bonus points, more than any defender this season, whilst his aerial threat from set pieces boosts a clear attraction. The 5.3-rated Alberto Moreno is the alternative here, with the Spaniard’s 18 attempts on goal this term bettering any of his backline team-mates.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho each offer their own merits. Henderson’s recent surge in output has seen him deliver returns in five of the last six Gameweeks and offer excellent value at 6.7, whilst Sterling has a goal and assist in the last two league outings and was moved up front against Villa in a 3-4-2-1 for the weekend cup defeat. Sterling could retain that role if Daniel Sturridge is ruled out again, though Rodgers fielded Philippe Coutinho in a false nine role against Newcastle last time out and could utilised the Brazilian – who has scored in two of his last three in all competitions – centrally again if he moves back to 4-3-3.

LEICESTER

frisking
An unlikely source of Fantasy attention for the majority of the campaign, the Foxes recent performances, coupled with their impending double, has seen a swing in interest towards their assets over the past few weeks. The Midlanders head to a goal-shy Burnley side on Saturday for what should be a relegation dogfight, followed by a home meeting with Chelsea next Wednesday evening. With three attractive home fixtures (NEW, SOU, QPR) and trip to Sunderland left to play, there’s enough reason to believe that Nigel Pearson’s men can escape the drop, and plenty of reason to consider retaining our double Gameweek picks for the remainder of the campaign.

Ten goals in the last four outings is indicative of the offensive approach Pearson has recently instilled. Leading the way for Fantasy interest has been 4.6-priced striker Jamie Vardy, whose two goals and pair of assists have been integral to his side’s recent surge. With the equally in-form David Nugent a major doubt for the trip to Turf Moor due to a calf complaint, Vardy is likely to garner even more suitors. Esteban Cambiasso, who has earned returns in each of his last three appearances, is basically unrivalled for investment by any of his midfield team-mates and  is also on a number of managers’ radars, though Marc Albrighton, at 4.2, has started the last two on the right and has decent underlying stats.

The Foxes complimented their upturn in attacking output with a clean sheet against Swansea at the weekend, and with Saturday’s opponents Burnley having managed just a single goal in their last seven outings, further returns are due. Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position prospects make him the most likely route for managers to take, though Kasper Schmeichel in net has the potential for save points, whilst both Robert Huth and Wes Morgan have offered strong goal threat of late.

WEST HAM

frisking
A lack of motivation has seen the Hammers’ season stall over the course of the past two months, though their remaining fixture list should afford Sam Allardyce optimism. Away days at QPR, Aston Villa and Newcastle, married with the visit of Burnley, look very encouraging for Fantasy returns.

Whether that potential will translate into invest is another matter entirely, however. The Hammers have scored more than a single goal just once in their last 11 outings and faith in their attacking assets is understandably low. Their recent injury difficulties up top certainly haven’t helped matters, with Enner Valencia and Carlton Cole now their only two fit strikers. Stewart Downing, meanwhile, will be keen to reward those 21% of managers that have remained faithful to him with some long-awaited returns. The most likely source of investment is left back Aaron Cresswell, whose set-piece duties produced a goal against Stoke in Gameweek 32,and with the two weakest attacks of the past six Gameweeks on the agenda in the final run-in (BUR, new) defensive points can also be expected, making Adrian an option between the sticks.

Also Consider…

Man City
Manuel Pellegrini’s men steadied the ship with a solid 2-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday after recent losses to Burnley, Palace and United had thrown their top four credentials into jeopardy. The Citizens are presented with a strong schedule to round the season off, with three home fixtures (AVL, QPR, SOU) in their final five as well as a trip to Swansea to boost their Fantasy potential.

David Silva has returned to training and has been given the all-clear after being stretchered off with a possible cheekbone injury at the weekend and, although City will continue to monitor him, he could be back in contention against Villa. Sergio Aguero remains unchallenged for our affections in attack, with the 12.5-valued forward notching three strikes in the last two Gameweek – a lack of premium alternatives up front this week also works in his favour. At the back, meanwhile, City now have four successive home clean sheets and with Vincent Kompany currently sidelined, Martin Demichelis looks the most reliable starter for those keen to invest. Aleksandar Kolarov could also come into contention if Gael Clichy remains out through injury, though.

Arsenal
With Gameweek 33’s blank now gone, Fantasy managers’ love-affair with the Gunners’ main men can resume. The double Gameweek 37 is sure to be a factor when planning our transfers over the coming weeks, though acquiring our chosen assets sooner rather than later looks a wise strategy, with promising clashes against Hull and Swansea on the horizon beyond this weekend’s showdown with Chelsea. The Gunners’ rearguard will be keen to pick up where they left off with shutouts in three of their previous six outings, and David Ospina and Laurent Koscielny are likely to find their way into a host of sides in the coming weeks. Going forward, Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez – whose brace booked the north Londoners a place in the FA Cup final last weekend – are primed to reap the rewards of the kind schedule, whilst Aaron Ramsey’s pair of goals and assists in his last four league appearances suggest that the Welshman is also worth considering. With Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla also in the mix, finding the right balance to fit at least two of those three in before Gameweek 37 will be a principal concern for many.

Newcastle
Having lost six on the trot, it’s understandable that there’s little interest in the Magpies’ assets right now. That run of form has ensured that John Carver’s outfit are not yet assured of safety, though trips to Leicester and QPR could go a long way to deciding the relegation race, as will a trio of promising home fixtures (SWA, WBA, WHM). Daryl Janmaat bagged his eighth assist of the season in last Sunday’s loss to Tottenham and the marauding right-back still looks a tempting prospect despite his side’s miserable form. Further forward, 4.7-valued Jack Colback scored his fourth of the season against Spurs, and could appeal as a budget pick for those needing to free up cash for the big-hitting double Gameweek stars.

Southampton
Despite tasting defeat twice in the last three Gameweeks, the Saints are still in the race for Champions League football. A decent schedule sees Ronald Koeman’s men face a trio of strugglers in their next four (sun, lei, AVL), that could bring in points at both ends of the pitch. Owners of Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand are likely to hold on even in face of the impending doubles for other sides, whilst Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle will remain on our radars as differential prospects.

    Heas spinning.
Preferred line up going into final 5 gw's is 4-5-1 with 10 DGWers for gw34.
3-5-2 with Aguero and still 10 DGWers looks bettr on paper but not so good going forward.
    Damn these wildcards.... 😉

  2. The Silva Out For A Hit Conundrum

Following up on an earlier post - http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/04/21/the-watchlist-updated-gameweek-34-the-defence/?hc_page=7#hc_comment_10140372 I thought I'll do a quick and dirty projection on a transfer many of us are pondering, to fill up our third Chelsea/Liverpool spot.

    The transfer in question is : Silva -> Fabregas/Henderson for a (-4) ?

I'm not going to use any real footballing data here, just look at rough FPL rank spreads, and whether you should make this transfer based off of that. Here are the current rank spreads from OR 100 -> OR 10,000 with a few minor approximations.

    rank 100 : points 2030
    rank 200 : points 2015
    rank 500 : points 1995
    rank 1000 : points 1975
    rank 2000 : points 1955
    rank 3500 : points 1935
    rank 6000 : points 1915
    rank 10,000 : points 1895

You can guess where I'm going with this since I've cherry-picked some nice 20 point spreads.

Now if you don't pull the trigger on the transfer and your worst nightmare comes true : Fabregas does an "Austekkers" and scores a mega 20 points, Silva gets protected and hauled off on 59 minutes, with a YC to boot - returning 0 points. How much damage could this difference of 20 points do to your ranking ?

Looking at ownership data (fpldiscovery) and transfers in, it looks like Fabregas will start in around 40% of top 10k teams this weekend. So you'll end up being overtaken by around 40% of teams which are less than 20 points behind you.

Suppose you're ranked OR 1,000 right now - the lowest ranked team within 20 points reach of you is the team at OR 2,000 (see spread above). 40% of this difference in OR, which is 400 manangers, will overtake you. Here are the results of this "Cesc"plosion for all ranks :

    rank 100 : will drop to 150
    rank 200 : will drop to 320
    rank 500 : will drop to 700
    rank 1000 : will drop to 1400
    rank 2000 : will drop to 2600
    rank 3500 : will drop to 4500
    rank 6000 : will drop to 7600
rank 10000 : will drop to 14,000 (ish)

The point I'm getting to after all this rambling is that if you have an OR of say 1000, and in this worst case scenario you will drop only 400 ranks, then it's really not a transfer worth making IMO.

Now I'm going to go into the murky realms of reading the future and say that realistically, Fabregas will probably get a couple of assists or a goal + 3 baps across the two games and end up with say 15 points. Silva is no slouch, and should manage an assist : 5 points. So you will only lose 40% of 10 'point-rankings', which should be around half the rank drop listed above. (OR 1000 to drop to OR 1200 in our specific case)

And in the quite-probable event that Silva matches Fabregas minus 4 points, you're heading up, up the rankings!

Finally, I think a similar logic applies to Silva -> Hendo (-4), especially if you are going to keep that extra 3 million sitting idle in the bank.I guess we could talk about post GW34 plans, but I'm looking at this in isolation which is not really the smartest idea...

    TL;DR

Don't do Silva -> Fabregas for -4, also with some caveats : don't do Silva -> Hendo for -4... and most importantly, don't come whinging to these boards when Fabregas and Hendo both score hattricks to make this a DGW for the ages ! 😀

Fabs and Hendo could easily outscore Silva + 4 over 2 games.

With Arsenal DGW upcoming, who knows.

Will prioritize Rambo or Ozil first, I can live without Silva knowing loads will be removing him for DGWers.

See this makes Silva an interesting point of difference if that is the case. Personally this makes me want to keep Silva all the more.

Absolutely agree its b*ll*cks ! 😀 Can't believe anyone would want to read this ..

But just to play devil's advocate.. the point of the post is not that Fabs or Hendo could outscore Silva this DGW, it's examining how hard it's going to affect your rank when they outscore Silva massively - the conclusion being that it's not going to affect your rank much if you're at the top.

So maybe you can prioritize other transfers for a minus 4, like getting Sterling or Liv/Chelsea defensive cover if you don't have any. And don't be too quick to dismiss single GW'ers !

this is assuming that silva is going to get one assist and fab is going to get more than one. So he thinks fab is a better option.
So surely if he is a better option then his -4 is offset.

Basically this post did nothing to change my opinion. If you want to change your fortunes you have to take a gamble with these DGWs

in Liverpools position, i think they will have some decent returns this week. They are fighting for Europe and they just lost the semi final of FA Cup. They will come out with a point to prove.

I can see Leicester falling a bit flat on goals this next couple of games, burnley are never a team that gets thumped, and nor are Chelsea.

The biggest threat i see in a single match this GW is the southampton v Tottenham game. It could be a 5-4 or something crazy like that. Even if it were though, most people have the defenders of Southampton and only Kane up top. But it could be a high scoring fixture in my eyes.

I think the best time to launch an attack is now, and spend on DGW then aim towards 3 Arsenal players for the final DGW.

Very thorough analysis of a Silva out for a hit. For me its a bit tricker though, I have to consider Silva out for Sterling because its the only way I can afford him. Being the fairly conservative manager that I am though I'm likely to stick because imo, Silva is a season keeper with only a handful of games left.

Eriksen -> Sterling seems the way to go for you, Ryan ? Although I'm sure you have some defensive changes planned as well, which might mess with the budget...

In any case, I wouldn't want to go without Sterling this week - his ownership is growing at an alarming rate

Yeah unfortunately I'm just a fraction short as I want to bring in a Liverpool defender as well. Coutinho could be a nice point of difference anyway and I'm hoping he can do the job.

A hit for a Leicester defender doesn't really appeal. No I think I'll stick and hope Coutinho can be the man this GW and not Sterling or Hendo.

What a great post! Well done Enzo.

I was just sat here mulling over Silva > Sterling -4. I think I might do it for 2 reasons.

      1) I'll get 3 games out of Raheem compared to 2 from Silva

      2) It'll give me the money to do Remy > Groot next week

      3) Sterling > Ozil or Ramsey for free in gw36 gives me an extra game there as well.

      4) I fancy Sterling & Ozil or Ramsey (-4) to outscore Silva to the end of the season.

I think it's possible to fit in 2 Liv midfielders without ditching Silva, thanks to Hendo's value. Like Ryan said - if you really want to go all out on Chelsea - consider Terry+Ivan.

I'd probably go for a mid of Haz, Sterling, Henderson, Silva, and an Arsenal mid to bench this week. A cheap, popular striker up top with good fixtures and form - like Vardy alongside Kane+Aguero would let you afford that.

This is complete nonsense. Way too much speculation for it to be useful...if my auntie had balls she'd be my uncle etc....

"Silva gets protected and hauled off on 59 minutes, with a YC to boot"

"Silva is no slouch, and should manage an assist"

For many is Silva out for a hit necessary to be able to afford Giroud in next week.

      The comparison should be:

A: Silva (AVL, tot) +4 point and Vardy (NEW)
B: Coutinho (wba, hul,QPR) and Giroud (hul)

The flip-side of a fall in your rank if you make a wrong decision is a corresponding rise in your rank if you make the right one. The positive outcome should come into your calculations, not just the negative one!

It's a risk/reward thing, and sometimes being afraid to take a risk is the biggest risk of all.

Okay, think I'm done (though it is probably very template):

    Mignolet
    Ivan Schlupp Terry
    Hazard Sterling Henderson Cambiasso
    Aguero Vardy Kane

    Davis Sanchez Toby Coleman

That gives me 9 DGW players this week, the chance to do Ivan/Sterling/Vardy > Duff/Ramsey/Giroud before DGW37 and a strong enough bench to handle the transition.

    Yay or nay?

Wasi > Duff, on the basis that you already have three DGW defenders + Toby so you're more than strong enough there.

Use the free Leicester spot to bring in a striker for Giroud (except make sure you have enough to get him back afterwards).

RCA. this is what i wrote

lots of getting stuck in to rodgers. understandable. I just want to add a bit of perspective. he came in on the back of our worst period in many decades. those sepos very nearly ran us into the ground, which a lot of fans feared as soon as the sale was unfortunately approved. for a while there a fate similar to leeds was a serious possibility. I was really worried. now things like "first 3 year trophyless run in over 50 years" or "rodgers liverpool can't handle pressure of big games" are great press grabs. they are also true statements. without context they sound damning, in fact considering where we've come from in those three years and the path rodgers has led us down (young talented signings, developing together in one football philosophy) it isn't surprising or damning.yes he has made mistakes. mainly some of the transfer dealings (often hard to know where the blame lies with that). gotta remember he is developing at liverpool himself. I believe in what he's doing. I think the future is bright. I think the mentality needed to win trophies will take time for such a young team. though at some point once he feels the groundwork is set he will need to, like wenger has, find the final quality pieces in their prime. I think we are about at that stage now. I will be disappointed if the rodgers out crowd gets big and noisy again. he is good for the club right now and I am more than happy to see where we are at after a couple more years of his stewardship.

I am a BR fan, but he has proven again this season to crumble under pressure. His presence in the media is a little overwhelming sometimes, when he made a claim for us to finish second this season (around the time of the everton game I believe or maybe later) and that seemed to crack the team, not that his statement caused a change, but more like when things are going our way he doesn't know what to do. He can lift us out of the darkness and bad times, but once we get to the top he falters at that final hurdle.

The other issue I have with him this season is his constant tinkering with formations and playing players out of position, something LVG has been heavily criticised for but it's more understandable for him as it is his first season. BR is on his 3rd season, and sometimes he still seems clueless about how to play players and his tactics. His 3 at that back was a stroke of genius but ManUtd and Arsenal were easily able to figure it out and counter it, and he was helpless and could not respond to their tactics. Then the big game against Villa he changed formation something like 7 seven times, and moved players around so much that I didn't even know who was playing where anymore. He was up against a Tim Sherwood Villa, not one know for his mind games and tactical trickery, yet BR couldn't figure them out, we went one nil up and he changed things, he brought on GJ when we needed a goal, brought Lambert on in the 90th minute, It made no sense. He had 0 midfielders on the bench. you say he invests in youth, and it's true, our under 18 and 21 team are very good and play his style of football but our first team does not play the way he wants still. Also I feel Lambert should not have come on, he should be our last choice, we needed some young options from bench to come on and prove themselves.

very good points mate cheers. the villa game was a nightmare.
he gives me the sh1ts too in the media. says some really silly stuff.
the tactical changes do go either way, it wins a lot of games too I think

        1. djenzio
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 5 months ago

yeah. I really think that BR has a very personal and belief system, and it is really good. the style of play, and the investment in youth. It's after 3 years I would expect us to be a bit more solid, and settled. seems he is still tinkering too much

maybe he doesnt have the right players, and that might be his fault or the owners, it's hard to know

Saurez was a one, if not the, best player to grace the FPL. I would go as far as to say he was better than Ronaldo at Utd. He made the team last year, not just his goals but his pressing and constant threat both in attack and defence/ He got the whole team to press and play high pressure.

heard a good point on a podcast that we were so high intensity last season, and we ran out of steam in most games (but had scored enough by that point so it didn't matter) that this season he has tried to be more conservative and have players hold back more. But we have much more squad depth this season yet he has not rotated well to keep players fresh and allow that same gameplay as last season/

I love Rodgers, and what he has done for the club, but you have to wonder if he knows what he is doing anymore or if he has lost the plot. It is really hard to tell at this point

Do you think he will stay? and do you want him to stay?

            • 15 Years

I do and I do. I think he has to be given the chance to finish what he started. especially considering how much he has changed the club for the better. I really hope he succeeds. if he doesn't and has to move on in a couple years. I think I'll remember his time fondly.
completely agree on suarez man. maybe the best player ever at liverpool and I dont say that lightly

crazy how he only had 1 and a half seasons and he prob is the best player we have ever had.

if he does stay I would like to see these youth players getting some first team game time next season,

we came so close last season, and this season seemed to be on a high for a while with top4 finish very clear in sight. would love to him achieve something more tangible than that.

hoping for a strong finish to the season, unlikely to catch City but would be a shame if we didn't at least put pressure on them

    Foster
    Moreno ivanovich Toby
Cambiaso Hendo sterling hazard (c) silva
    Aguero remy

Bench : Kane, van annholt, bellerin.

Ideally want to play my 7 DGWers hence my formation woes.

I have to disagree with the statement below, written in the article about West Hams fixtures. Those teams are likely to be desperate for points , they would only become easy if the opponents were already relegated. Villa and QPR in particular look to have turned a corner and will be easy for no team

"Away days at QPR, Aston Villa and Newcastle, married with the visit of Burnley, look very encouraging for Fantasy returns."

These teams might be chasing wins and will be on the offense, they can't afford to sit back and try and grind out a draw. As such they might be more prone at the back and worth considering their opponents attacking options.

I agree with your comments, but it means that these games are likely to be higher scoring, with the exception (possibly) of Aston Villa.

Villa looking very impressive, they could have some great value investments for next season

Option A -4 nugent out austin in (kane or silva benches)

Option B -4 clark out shlupp in (jagielka benches kane and silva starts)

Option C no -4 jagielka, kane and silva starts

Please help me as i am 9 points behind the guy i need to pass. he has 8dgw players kane murray and silva which means he wud have to bench one of these. reason i suggested austin is because he is almost guaranteed to score at home. but is the minus worth it .. any of these options plz let me knw

I'm not on a wildcard but i think you'd have to keep him ... still the leagues equal top-scoring forward and has goals in him against anyone, home or away.
