Pre-Season

Sleeper – Romelu Lukaku

Our “Sleeper” series of articles focusses on those previously profitable Fantasy assets who underperformed in the season gone by. Everton’s Romelu Lukaku fits that description perfectly.

Following a successful loan spell at Everton during the 2013/14 season, where he scored 15 league goals, hopes were high for the big Belgian last time out. Lukaku made his move to Goodison Park permanent, signing for a club record fee of £28m from Chelsea, after making only 15 appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Handed a price tag of 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the Toffees frontman made a reasonable start to last season, scoring twice and providing an assist during the first five Gameweeks. Following blanks against Liverpool and Manchester United, he found the net four times in his next seven outings, although crucially, he failed to register a single double-figure haul over that period.

The 22-year-old forward endured a barren spell between Gameweek 15 and 22, registering just a single assist, before grabbing the winner in the 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace on January 31.

The second half of the season again highlighted the Belgian’s inability to register consistent attacking returns, scoring attacking points in just four of his final 13 appearances. Lukaku’s first double-digit haul came in the 3-0 win against Newcastle in Gameweek 29, while his highest score of the season arrived against West Ham in Gameweek 37, where he bagged a goal, an assist and full bonus in the 2-1 win.

Although he excelled in the Europa League by scoring eight times, Lukaku was far from prolific on the domestic stage and converted just 9.5% of his scoring opportunities. The Toffees striker ranked joint 20th among forwards for bonus points (with 12 accrued), compared to eighth for total points. He ended the campaign with 135 points, less than he had managed over the previous two seasons (168 and 159), averaging just 3.75 points per appearance.

THE PROSPECTS

Partly due to their involvement in the Europa League, it’s fair to say that the Merseysiders endured a difficult year. Manager Roberto Martinez never seemed entirely sure on whom to play in tandem with Lukaku, and with rest and rotation rife, the likes of Ross Barkley, Aiden McGeady, Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith, Aaron Lennon, Leon Osman, Arouna Koné and Samuel Eto’o were all tried in the positions behind the striker.

This time around, though, the Toffees won’t have the distractions of the Europa League, which has seen the league form of the likes of Tottenham, Swansea and Stoke also suffer in recent years. Hopes are high, then, that, with less need to tinker due to fatigue, Martinez’ side will replicate the displays that saw them earn a fifth-placed finish in his first year at the helm in 2013/14.

Despite hinting at his preference Champions League football, Lukaku is expected to stay at Goodison for the season ahead and a price of 8.5 to 9.0 is anticipated for a player who is now the Toffees number one spot-kick taker, having usurped Leighton Baines in the pecking order.

One look at the underlying stats certainly bodes well for Lukaku’s prospects in 2015/16. As the focal points of his side’s attack, the target man sat fifth amongst forwards for total attempts (105, just eight less than Harry Kane), whilst Lukaku’s tally of 66 efforts inside the box was just one less than both Harry Kane and Diego Costa. Sitting fourth amongst frontmen for attempts on target (41) in 2014/15, and fifth for chances created (38), Lukaku – as he’s shown before – could be a real Fantasy force if he and his team-mates can start sticking away their opportunities with greater regularity.

On the downside, the opening schedule has done little to persuade us he will be worthy of our initial investment. Aside from their home opener against Watford, Martinez’ men then face a run which pits them against last season’s top eight, in addition to a trip to West Brom, in the following nine fixtures. Given that the schedule eases significantly from Gameweek 11 onwards, many Fantasy managers will be happy to afford Lukaku the chance to ease his way into the new campaign before eyeing up his potential acquisition.

    Evenin' all!

Following some feedback from Doos, I've tweaked my CS Season Ticker to rate defences like this:

No. of CS kept x 2
+ no. of times conceded just the 1 goal

IMO, calculating this score for both home and away, provides a really strong measure for evaluating the strength of a defence.

The attacking threat of the opposition is determined by how many games they managed to score 1+ goals - not the typical GF/GA.

    Here's the results:

Southampton, Swansea, Liverpool, Bournemouth, West Ham, all have excellent home fixtures in the first half of the season.

Hey Parm! I'm not sure as the final value (percentage chance of keeping a CS) varies by the strength of both teams, where as I think the members' season ticker is based purely on the opposition? In other words, Chelsea home to Villa will be the same colour blue as Sunderland home to Villa.

I've tried to go one step further and factor in Chelsea and Sunderland's defensive strength based on last season's stats.

Yeah that generally tends to happen with wider players, move in more central when they don't have the pace they once had. Often can contribute a lot more in the middle too with experience etc.

even with all the potential signings utd, city and arsenal are linked with and even if Chelsea don't sign another player then I still see them winning the prem. if you picked a prem XI now you'd probably have 5 or 6 Chelsea players in, plus arguably the best manager. plus the bench is strong and the fact that jose doesn't really tinker much with his back 5 and DMF, so they are so settled

Absolutely 100% agree with this. With the exception of the final few weeks you would struggle to find two back to back matches last season with the same back four. The defence never got settled and it cost us. That is one thing I would like to see changed this year. Pick a back four and barring injuries or the odd rest, stick with it.

the thing is with utd, arsenal, city is that a few players look like they will go straight into the starting XI and that could take time to settle. by which time Chelsea could be 5 or 6 points clear early on with their settled, battle hardened, winning team. that 2nd match between city and Chelsea could be a massive match!

Yeah that will have serious implications for the rest of the season. I know its far too early in the season to call it a title decider but I would predict that if Chelsea win, City may struggle to catch them for a few months at least, it will be a serious dent in confidence very early on. Chelsea are already settled and are well prepared for that reason. That makes it even more surprising that City havent gotten in their additions yet to get them used to playing with each other and prepare for that match.

Thats all it is, rumours. Nothing solid. I thought some of the players who did not perform last year would be sold but that doesnt seem to be happening with players like Nasri and Dzeko saying they are staying. Then there is not one player except a couple of youth players that have been added. Talk of signing players like Delph that while decent are hardly the world class quality that the team needs. I dont mean to be pessimistic but City were a good bit behind Chelsea last year, and United and Arsenal are strengthening so City must also improve yet here we are less than two months to a very important match against Chelsea and nothing. It is worrying.

I think city will splash the cash this summer. the interview a few weeks back with the Etihad guy made it clear they want to spend big to refreshen the ageing squad. de bryne, sterling would be 80 odd mill plus I expect another striker, midfielder to replace milner and lampard, a LB and CB so you could be talking 150 mill + and maybe even 200 mill if they get pogba. I think they will end up spending the most this summer, with utd 2nd, Liverpool 3rd

The only problem Arsenal have is that they have a few too many players made of glass...If that right's itself then they will be contenders..100%

They would be two great signings. The age profile must be reduced this season. FFP is no longer an issue. City are profitable now and in a recent interview the chairman said FFP is no longer a concern for City.

Yeah and there's options around for cheap that are good enough for the city squad. Problem is it takes time to bring them in AND move on some older non homegrown squad players without causing too much upheaval

            I have a question:

As the semi finals are being held on the same day with only hours between, will they're be the opportunity to make manager substitutions and a captain change between semi final 1 and semi final 2?

            Any ideas?

No - according to the rules you can only make manager subs "after all matches on a single day have finished", so to me that says you can't make changes between the semis that are both on the same day.

Sounds like West Ham are frontrunners for Song, though we have been linked. I think we'd stand a chance of getting him but he might prefer the familiarity of London and a club he's already played for.

I think it'd be a bit of a big leap for Hughes, a little too much of a gamble for my liking.

For me, this is waaaay to much. Is Brendan pre-spending Sterling money, in a similar vein to how Suarez money was spent, ie rashly?

I wouldn't have paid more than £16M for Firmino.

Well then you wouldn't have got Firmino 😉 it is a big fee but the market dictates price. Sometimes you find bargains like Suarez and coutinho , sometimes you gotta stump up. Swings and roundabouts. Just look at sterling fee right now. If we wait a year the same player will go for half of that

Anybody thinking that the Ox seems to be becoming increasingly marginalised at Arsenal...I know he's been injured, which isn't helping his case, but he's far too good to become a bit part player...And what about young Gnabry ?..his star seems to be diminishing as well.

Two good players there getting ready for poaching..

Gnabry was injured all last year.

Ox still gets plenty of gametime when fit, although at the moment he is better off the bench. I think the key for both is fitness. Ox has been missing months at a time the last 2 or 3 seasons, which is always difficult to come back from.

He's a great player, but a well as fitness it's becoming increasingly hard to see where he fits in. The squad seems to be moving on and he's too good to be Coca Cola cup player. There could be an opportunity for somebody if he wants more game time.

Although, with Theo perhaps making the transition to striker, there is space on the flank for him. I certainly don't think Ramsey or Wilshere are a long term solution, and he should have the beating of Danny.

I'd hate to lose him. Great player, and comes across as a really down to earth lad.

Oxlade is still only 21 (22 this year), and I think he'll be utilised increasingly this season. Didn't he have a serious injury last year? I really like him and his potential.

it's always going to be rotation, rotation, rotation in that Arsenal midfield though.

Yeah, I suppose it could be. Poor old Wenger has had so many injuries for the past few seasons that the team has damned near had to pick itself. I really have no idea how much he would rotate with everybody fit....

Ox's injuries are the problem. There was a spell where he played in a 3 man midfield I think, and he was brilliant. Notably against Palace at home

I dunno man Wenger knows what he's doing with these young players. If ox has it in him to be a superstar he's at the right club.When/if he's really ready to be a key player
they would probably sell a big name to let him step up as they have in the past

If Arsenal get Schneiderlin, adding to Cech signing. This may swing my decision to Kosc as my big hitting defender over Ivan.

Even if he earned the spot wholly and totally, his play style and his age means he is more prone to fatigue than other full backs. I don't think he could manage a whole season of football yet, even if Wenger wanted too.

Maybe, but he's still struggling with the language, and will probably have to wait for Mertz to slip up again before getting a proper chance. The same way Kos got a chance after Vermaelen had a tough spell.

yeah I fancy arsenal to be tighter at the back this season but I still fancy Chelsea's back 5 plus DMF as the best in the prem so IVA will get kore CS's. I know KOS is capable of scoring as many as IVAN but ivan has that added assist value when he bombs down the wing. both will score mega points though

Will try to have a defender from both teams but it depends on prices and whether there are any cheap nailed on options. Bellerin was great last year, hopefully something like that occurs again this year.

Am I right in remembering that this time last year after the purchase of Filipe Luis people were expecting that Ivan may spend time at CB to cover the ageing terry with Luis and Azpi LB/RB? Any idea why this never eventuated? Any chance it will this season and how would that effect Ivan scores?

I think it never happened for a number of reasons. Firstly, Mourinho barely changed his defence around. Ivan and Terry both played every single game. Secondly, the centre back cover is Zouma, rather than Ivan.

If it did happen, I think it would be better for his potential. He will have the same threat from set pieces, but should be better on the BAPS making the passing bonus as a centre back.

I think we'd need 2 injures to Chelsea centre backs to see that, though.

thing is terry is playing as well as ever. if anyone's gonna get rotated it will be cahill for zouma. I don't think jose will change much this season in defence. loftus cheek will take the place of mikel as matic/cesc cover and maybe Oscar will leave. should've kept KDB

He plays against some of the Merseyside teams in the cup competitions. There are some seriously talented players at youth level around Liverpool. Just to be singled out for some coaching takes a bit of doing.

Licky, spotted you on the rumours site 🙂
Fwiw I've been watching them closely because they speak with such authority and I'm convinced they are full of it. Reminds me of pshycics making educated guesses but portraying them as facts. People remember the hits and conveniently forget the misses because of confirmation bias. They keep it vague and rewrite history when they are wrong. E.g. said skrtel had an agreement to sign a contract then when he said that's not true changed their tune to the agreement they spoke about could be to leave the club. Insisted there was nothing in the Firmino rumours and the journos just aren't itk like them, now they are insinuating they saw it coming.
Do you know they have the same sites for all premier league clubs and other European leagues? Nice earner no doubt. I looked into things they've said in the past through lfc site forums too.
As you can tell they definitely piqued my interest because they are quite convincing. Maybe they have some level of insight but I'm convinced it doesn't come close to matching their posturing.
I'm could be wrong of course but I'm yet to see anything to convince me.

I don't think they earn much Champ, I think with Skrtel and Firmino they weren't quite sure what was happening true, but they did say it wouldn't surprise them if we rekindled interest in Firmino which we did. Things change a lot behind the scenes but since I've been following the sight its all been pretty spot on.

They said AFTER he signed that years ago they said interest might be rekindled one day. Before he signed they were saying it won't happen. That's rewriting history.
I'll keep watching but so far I'm far from convinced.
Reminds me of Liverpool11 that was a former academy player that claimed a lot of itk stuff that couldn't be verified and claimed to be a coach at Liverpool. That was too specific so they contacted the club and debunked and banned him.

Its hard to tell for sure, I was convinced personally he was off to United, but then we got him, and freakishly quickly considering its us, it depends on what their info is like I guess. To be fair to them things can change and can do so quickly. The Allen signing seemed legit though the general consensus in the media was there was a clause in the Brodge's contract that forbade him form 'raiding' Swansea so the media largely said it wouldn't happen, they were adamant it didn't exist though so it was no problem. Maybe its a broken clock, maybe it isn't, take it all with a pinch of salt really. 😉

It's the multitude of their sites claiming insider knowledge on different teams and leagues that really raised my eyebrow. Talking with such authority on Liverpool is one thing but to be itk all across Europe is another

Indeed its like a spiderweb isn't it. 😀 They said themselves recently its getting a lot harder to get info on Liverpool due to the tightening up of leaks from the owners, I suppose it depends on who their contacts and sources are, and how many and where they are placed. 😛 Its some Illuminati stuff, I do like their footballing opinions though, they're an interesting read.

For those who are trying to work out rotations for next season, this might come in handy. What's particularly interesting is just how much of a role home advantage plays. Oh, and if your rotation features Stoke away, you might want to think again!

It's a big one! Their away record under Lambert was unbelievably bad, they were practically handing out CS, and never scored more than once.

Lambert at Home - 12 Games, 8 Goals Scored, opponents kept 6 Clean Sheets
Sherwood at Home - 7 Games, 10 Goals Scored, opponents kept 2 Clean Sheets.

Lambert Away - 13 Games, 4 Goals Scored, opponents kept 9 Clean Sheets.
Sherwood Away - 6 Games, 9 Goals Scored, opponents kept 1 Clean Sheet.

It's been handled incredibly badly by Liverpool, and pundits in general (so called objective voices) but also by Sterling and his agent to be fair. I'm not even sure what he wants. Personally I think he should have negotiated his contract quietly, Liverpool too, and knuckled down for another year or two.

Did the same thing happen when he left QPR, I don't think so. Players are often ambitious and want to move to what they deem a bigger club, why not? Players moving from lower league clubs are not chastised for wanting to move, its all a bit silly really.

He's stated exactly what he wants: to win trophies. Liverpool are not going to win anything meaningful unless Firmino is another Suarez level talent.

Sterling probably also wants a decent wage and maybe to return to London but we can only guess about that one.

He certainly made a poor choice of agent though.

I'm not saying that view isn't a fair one, personally I think it would better suit his development better with us for a while longer, at around 23-24 he could move to a better club and be the finished article and have his peak years ahead of him, I think a lot of the demonisation is down to that, not just the desire to win trophies argument which pisses off most Liverpool fans anyway.

So he'll play out his contact (as Liverpool are probably asking for too much) and then leave. He turned down a 5 year contract and if he thought that was too long then it's his right to reject it.

Its too far down this road to turn back, he'll be gone its now best for all parties. I just wish Liverpool dropped their arrogance and started acting like a proper club.

He, according to his agent, won't sign for any wage offered. In a way, I quite like that. Like a business man that has been offered double to stay at a company but wants to move still turning it down. Simply, good luck to him. He has been great, but it's time for the saga to end.
