Captain Sensible – Gameweek 3

Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero claims the lion’s share (35%) of the vote this Gameweek, having announced his return to Manchester City’s starting line-up with a goal against Chelsea. The Argentinian marksman already looks to be firing off all cylinders, as evidenced by the fact he sits atop the summit for goal attempts (nine) among forwards this term. Such is the strength of Aguero’s fixture-proof status, his owners are not deterred by the Sky Blues’ trip to the in-form Everton this Sunday. Given Manuel Pellegrini’s troops fashioned 18 shots on goal against last season’s stingiest rearguard, the Toffees will do well to batten down the hatches at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney drops down a spot the second place, with 16% of voters keeping faith in Manchester United’s premier striker in spite of back-to-back blanks. Although Rooney tallied a paltry two goal attempts across his first couple of starts, the Red Devils’ home tie against Newcastle could well serve as the catalyst that kick-starts his campaign. For that reason, it no surprise his team-mate Memphis Depay occupies the bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Netherlands international bagged an eye-catching brace during United’s Champions League qualifying win over Club Brugge and looks far more suited to the left wing role after moving out of the central position last time out. Furthermore, the absence through suspension of the Magpies’ first-choice right-back, Daryl Janmmat, should further stand to benefit the Dutchman if he’s retained out wide.

Bafetimbi Gomis is backed by over 6%, while Swansea’s high-flying new boy Andre Ayew has convinced just over 2% of voters to hand him the armband. The Welsh outfit have been in sensational from an offensive standpoint over the first two Gameweeks, chalking up more big chances (seven) than any other side. Moreover, they sit joint-top – alongside Man City – for shots on target (15), demonstrating their quality in the final third. A trip to Sunderland looks certain to harvest further attacking returns, given that the Black Cats shipped three goals in their previous home encounter against Norwich City.

Inspecting the lower reaches of the list, Eden Hazard and Dimitri Payet scooped 4% of the vote each. The former has yet to deliver any attacking returns but a road tie against West Bromwich Albion – who’ve been breached three times in their first home fixture – could serve as a fertile proving ground for the dormant big-hitter. The latter, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of racking up points for the third successive Gameweek as the Hammers gear up for a home tie against winless Bournemouth.

At 3%, Alexis Sanchez – who plays at home to Liverpool this Gameweek – is starting to build some momentum as a slew of Fantasy managers draft him in with their Wildcard. Riyad Mahrez is not far behind the Chilean livewire, with his proponents expecting the goal spree to continue at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking of the North London club, it’s perhaps surprising that Harry Kane attracted just 1.4% of the vote, considering he tallied four goals (including a hat-trick) against the Foxes last season.

Has anyone on the WC managed to put together a decent team with Hazard, Sanchez and Aguero?

Put together a Hazard Sanchez Silva Aguero WC test and it wasn't as horrendous as you'd imagine

        4.5 4.0
        5.0 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.5
        Sanchez Hazard Silva 5.5 5.5
        Aguero 6.5 5.5

This is a rough outlay of it financially, it worked for me because I had certain players before their price rose

Yeah it doesn't look great does it...except for having the three most desired players in the game of course, I debated going with two 4.5m midfielders to try and balance it better but still doesn't look good.

        Why easier?

Hazard and Sanchez haven't changed price, and most people on WC this week will have got Aguero before he went up.

      Guzan McCarthy

      Shaw Darmian Ward Gomez Targett

      Sanchez Hazard Mahrez Albrighton Westwood

      Rooney Aguero Defoe

Not sure if this is decent 🙂

Yes impact on overall midfield. Last chance for Rooney against Newcastle. If not will transfer him out and get Depay but have to -4.

That's actually pretty good! McCarthy only has a week or two left playing so it means playing Butland every week, Sagna will eventually lose his position too when Zabaleta is back next month. Short term should do nicely though!

Bombshell meaning? It is his fault though, I'll agree. Our timing for games, the amount of games, etc in Pre-Season failed terribly and the full squad's out of shape.

No rotation in key areas. High intensity, the players tire mentally and physically after a couple of years of his management.

It can be sugar coated as he's amazing as the cubs he leaves go through a lull afterwards. I'm more of the opinion it's because of him.

Considering these transfers for a -4 hit:

    Rooney > Aguero
    Hazard > Depay

My team will then look like this:

    Butland (Myhill)

    Darmian Cédric Targett (Gomez) (Oxford)

Mahrez Yaya Touré Sánchez(V) Depay (Westwood)

    Agüero(C) Gomis Benteke

    What do you guys think?

Wanyama > Westwood? He's more attacking and has been talked up as England material by Sherwood. Wanyama isn't more than a tackle pass tackle machine. Very very few forays forward.

I'm going out tonight and knowing me will probably get hammered and miss the deadline tomorrow sleeping, my last remaining transfers to confirm on WC are : Sakho Hazard Westwood in for Lukaku Barkley Payet, waiting for any of the latter to rise to nick.1 out of them, the price change sites are saying no moves up or down for my transfers, reckon it's safe to just confirm my transfers and set team now ?

Must say, having had a quick look, Darmian really doesn't score very often (3 in 133 apps for Torino). Whilst I'd have to assume he's more in the assist market, is it possible that Smalling is worth the extra outlay for his goal threat?

        ------------------------ Hart ------------------------
        -------- Muinesa - Richards - Targett --------
        ---- Sanchez - Hazard - Silva - Mahrez ----
        ------------ Aguero - Sahko - Diouf -----------

        McCarthy - 4.5m - Francis - Oxford

I realise I will need to do a bit of tinkering to get the defence right, but do you think its worth it to get the big 4?

I don't think that defence is worth the sacrifice. Targett and Oxford won't last. However you don't necessarily have to lose the big four.

I'd downgrade Diouf or Sakho to a 5.5 (Deeney stats look good. Upgrade one of the 4.0s to a 5.0 at least. You can get away with Targett short term if you pick nailed on 4.5s.

I'd also say a 4.5 keeper is better than Hart.

            My thoughts on Chelsea assets:

A lot of talk on here about Chelsea and whether or not they will bounce back from their frankly awful start to the season. A lot of people are wildcarding, and there seems to be many on this site who seem shocked that these teams do not contain any chelsea assets.

Personally, I think all the Chelsea assets are overpriced. Hazard at 10 last year was a decent price, but if you were coming to the party late and getting him when his price was 11+, it smacked of desperation. Nothing has changed now - he has about the same ownership and is even more expensive. Would you have paid that amount for him last year? He may of been the leagues top goalscorer but he was never a standout captaincy option and always relied on a goal and 3 BPS to hit double digits. Always a risk.

Then you have Costa at 11. Potential there for massive hauls, but again a yellow card and a lack of bonus points means his price is too much for me.

No-one in midfield stands out, and the defence... well Azpilicueta at 6 could present good value if Chelsea can sort it out at the back, but there is no indication this is going to happen in the near future, with rotation on the cards for the underperforming backline. He offers virtually no attacking threat and now has competition from new signing Rahman. Terry and Ivanovic are no-go's IMO at 7.0 and Cahill and Zouma are far from nailed on. This defence is a minefield.

The fixture list does not smile kindly on Chelsea until GW 7. Plenty of time for these prices to drop, Chelsea to sort themselves out and some options to remerge. Not saying Chelsea are done for, but avoiding their assets now seems like a shrewd move to me.

TL;DR - Chelsea players overpriced, fixtures tough for a struggling team, avoid
