The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Crystal Palace

Next up in our series of members’ articles reviewing the numbers behind the 2015/16 campaign we put Crystal Palace under analysis.

We start by assessing their team data, comparing the Eagles to the rest of the top-flight, before focusing on their first-team squad and assessing the main goal threats and creative sources, in an attempt to gain insight on their prospects for 2016/17.

Having started the campaign with five wins in their first eight fixtures, Alan Pardew’s side looked like improving upon their tenth-placed finish in 2014/15 but Palace struggled to maintain momentum and won only six more matches in the remaining 30 Gameweeks, ending up just five points clear of the bottom three.

RP. Does anybody know how many managers has FFS?
And I'm wondering how much all information in here help all of us in the game. How many FFS users in top 10k FPL last season you think? More than 50%?

I could be wrong but I reckon 50% of the top 10k is a bit of a stretch.

50% of the top 1k however seems more accurate.

There was over 27K from memory last season.
Last season was a bit trickier so probably well under 50%.

I don't want to use it as a solitary excuse but if England:
              - started later
              - had an Xmas break
              - had one cup competition (or PL clubs entered later)

They would be more competitive than they are now.

And if the Pogba deal goes through you're looking at a minimum of £160m spent on 3 players. There'll be an expectancy to win it.

I can't do much for others' expectations, even if flawed. There's a sense of entitlement surround money = results that ignores the capabilities of other teams. We'll still be a team shaking off the rust of two mediocre managers and their poor/underwhelming transfer business, but hopefully it's a quick shake.

I just want progress so would be satisfied with a strong title run and cup run.

Mané ? Why ? So inconsistent last year and plenty of competition in that Liverpool midfield especially with Euro rotation. A big price tag doesn't guarantee a starting place, ask Adam Lallana.

      1. Lovren an elevator
        • 9 Years

        Firstly, no Europa rotation.
Second, he has explosive returns at times and at a bigger club, I imagine a bit more so.
Thirdly, he is klopps first major signing, clearly klopp wants him and therefore will play him...He can even replace Daniel glass legs during inevitable constant injuries

At a bigger club, I imagine a bit more so - really ?

Just look at their previous signings from Southampton.

Lallana, Clyne, Lovren, Lambert - None of those have so far exceeded expectations in either FPL or in reality since leaving. Not one of them has improved their game.

    Two questions:

    1. Name a high-priced player from last year (at each position) that underperformed, will drop and resurrect himself.

    2. Name a budget player from last year who played well beyond his price that will be overpriced and under-deliver.

I am going to struggle to come up with four each, but these come to mind immediately:

    1. Baines
    2. Mahrez

        1. Bano is a good shout; I doubt Silva and Costa will drop materially.
        2. I struggle with Alli. On one hand, logic dictates that he'll jump to double digits and won't do nearly enough to justify the price. On the other hand, he could turn into Hazard of two years ago (or last year's Mahrez). On the other hand, most of Leicester would fit the bill here, thinking about it.

Armenian playmaker who joined Dortmund in 2013. Had a soft 14/15 (5 goals and 5 assists in 42 matches), but in 13/14 he had 17 goals and 12 assists in 56 matches (some Armenian matches/production) and in 15/16 he exploded with 19 goals and 24 assists in 54 matches (1 Armenia match with no goals/assists)

He's a quality player but I do have my reservations and want to see how he settles in first. The Kagawa transfer springs to my mind.

He was almost scoring almost every other game before his move from Dortmund to United.

to be fair to that point is that Kagawa is a small fella not known for his resilience, etc.

but I agree I have my reservations for now and am hoping Martial is classified as a mid 😉

Aguero will be my first pick and then build a team around him.

However I will probably go with him. I'm a big believer in premium strikers that are on penalties and score regularly. Ibra will likely top the captain poll gw2 (SOU) if he scores gw1. It would be risky to go without him. Other captain options available but Zlatan is surely the best. I'm Wildcarding gw 4 and good first 3 fixtures are good, so... happy days 😉

No, won't start if 442 unless Stones sold. However, it is possible that Koeman might opt to play 352 which often did at Southampton. Everton have the players to play that formation in my opinion.

if these are the mids between 7-8m which one will you have?

    a) Cazorla
    b) Mane
    c) Siggy
    d) Alli
    e) Willian
    f) Barkley
    g) Tadic
    h) Shaqiri
    i) Arnie

For me I'd say C or F. Siggy has poor fixtures long term but he's FPL gold. Barkley has nice fixtures and Koeman could make something of him, but it depends if they buy Mata or another #10

    1. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 11 Years

He's one of our best players, so he really should.

      C).
Maybe Alli or Mane if they show form.

    3. Parm
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 4 months ago

      a) Cazorla was gold a few years back when he was the big fish in the number 10 role with double digits for goals and assists but now he's barely on my radar. His role has changed significantly and he's now dictating the play from deep with limited potential in and around the box and is subsequently heavily reliant upon set-pieces for Fantasy returns. When Ramsey & Wilshere are fit, i'm not so sure he starts on a regular basis either. Avoid.

      b) Mané is an interesting one, he has the reputation of being streaky and his returns favouring form over fixtures. His role will dictate how attractive his is from a fantasy standpoint, if he stays in a second-striker position in that Liverpool team, give me a slice of Sadio Mané at £8m with a dollop of Daniel Sturridge on top if he's fit, too.

      c) Looking at the numbers, Sigurdsson had a strange year last year, almost Clint Dempsey-esque. His assist numbers were way down on previous years and he was goals heavy, which is not a bad thing. I think that can be attributed to Swansea lacking 10-15 goal striker, Gomis was great for about 5 games so if they can solve that issue and Sigurdsson is reasonably priced, he'll be floating in and out of many of my initial drafts.

      d) Dele Alli had a great year last year but i'm not sure he puts up such big numbers next year. I think with Spurs, we will see rotation and Poch is already strengthening the squad with Wanyama & Janssen. Champions League football, the high intensity Spurs play at, no Dembele for the first few games, not much rest post-Euros = avoid, for me.

      e) I really don't want to talk about him. I'm completely ignoring him. Fine player, not a fantasy one.

      f) I'm not sure what Koeman is going to do at Everton but I think Barkley could be a key part of it. Give him time, there's a 12 goals-12 assist season in there somewhere.

      g) Tadic is one to love and hate. He's, for me, a cheap man's Ozil. His creativity numbers are up there and hopefully Austin can turn those chances into points now that Pellé is gone. Mané also leaving could give Tadic a free-er role behind the striker but I have no idea how the new manager thinks or works. This is a pre-season job.

      h) Shaqiri is just like Arnautovic in his first two seasons. He's had a few niggling injuries and is playing within himself. His creativity numbers are top notch but Hughes seems reluctant to consistently play Diouf up top to reap the rewards of this. Shaqiri, however, isn't putting in similar goal threat numbers, which is a disappointment. He has that sort of payer within him, but either Hughes, or himself, is stopping it from breaking out. If he features in a #10 role, which seems somewhat unlikely, I really fancy him. Otherwise, forget it.

      I) Arnautovic broke out last year, pens are a big part of his game, though and sort of inflate those numbers. His price will be a huge factor and if it's around the likes of Sigurdsson or Mané, i'll be steering clear unless we see something special.

Now he's not only a "fantastic player" but also a "nice guy" and a "great man both on and off field".

Somebody in the replies to tweet has translated the essential, but I can do it for you.

He thanks everybody from the town where he was born through all the clubs where he played to the people of France for the support and having made him what he is, and hopes he (and his teammates) have managed to win the hearts of the French people.

For the English, he thanks Newcastle for having allowed him to progress and discover the PL, and the Toon fans for having always supported him.

Shouldn't, but they have a new manager so it's wait and see.

We don't know yet, the new Southampton manager may yet sell Tadic, you know. But as it stands, they shouldn't.

Ahead of the launch, I have extended my strikers' sheet further to provide rankings just like the midfielders sheet.

    Sheet 1: Midfielders
    - Compares midfielders combined goals + assists since 2013/14 across all leagues. Minimum 10 appearances, set pieces included.
    - Non PL Average, PL Average and 15/16 Average provided in the purple columns.
    - Non PL Ranking, PL Ranking and 15/16 Ranking provided in the blue columns.
    - New PL additions such as Mkhitaryan and Fischer have been added.

    Sheet 2: Strikers
    - Compares non-penalty goals + assists throughout a players' career as well as the 2015/2016 season separately.
    - Numbers (in minutes) are descending - from best to least best.

    - Compares strikers combined goals + assists since 2013/14 across all leagues. Minimum 10 appearances, set pieces included.
    - Non PL Average, PL Average and 15/16 Average provided in the purple columns.

Please leave any player suggestions in the PL. I'll update the sheets if and when more players are signed.

Some of those numbers look miles off?

Sanchez 13/14- 1.88 goals per 90 for example?
