The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Crystal Palace

Next up in our series of members’ articles reviewing the numbers behind the 2015/16 campaign we put Crystal Palace under analysis.

We start by assessing their team data, comparing the Eagles to the rest of the top-flight, before focusing on their first-team squad and assessing the main goal threats and creative sources, in an attempt to gain insight on their prospects for 2016/17.

Having started the campaign with five wins in their first eight fixtures, Alan Pardew’s side looked like improving upon their tenth-placed finish in 2014/15 but Palace struggled to maintain momentum and won only six more matches in the remaining 30 Gameweeks, ending up just five points clear of the bottom three.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Last year it opened 30 days before the season started. With that logic it might open on Thursday.

Need to change your grav to "G" rating.
You need to use the 4 navigation buttons on the home page.
There will be a big site update before the season starts to address a lot of issues.

What is the best strategy? Planning ahead for 5 Gameweeks then using the WC or 10 ? 15 ?

Middlesbrough first 5 fixtuers for example is great but after that it's really tough

A couple of transfers gets rid. 10 is probably the max unless you have a great start.

Might be 3 wildcards this year!

Wildcard as soon as you need to I guess, Ville took only 3 weeks or so to use it last year.

        Better not be 3 WCs.

I always set my team up at the beginning as I always would. Preference the next 3 but make sure the next 5 are solid.

And don't worry if you need to WC early! (Provided we get more than 1)

Use salad/ new potatoes boil them up. Be carful not to overcook them that helps them retain some shape in the salad.

Wait for them to cool before adding the mayo/ salad cream (if you want to speed this up run cold water over them in a colander.

I would use mayonnaise rather than salad cream myself. Then finely chop some chives in when you mix it all up

So easy. Big chunks of boiled potatoes and eggs. Whole egg Mayo, raw diced red onion, plenty of dill, season well with salt and pepper. A bit of Dijon goes alright too

What went into your pasta dish? Key with chorizo is rendering out the fat in a separate pan unless you want that really dominant chorizo oil flavour

Pasta was just beef ravioli with a cheese sauce and chorizo...I did the separate pan for the chorizo, not sure why it wasn't very nice - I usually love the chorizo 🙁

Back in work, it's on temp but it's better than nothing. Does anyone here work 12 hour shifts?

FPL side of things, scared I'll miss the launch and get a ridiculously high ID. Top 1k finish the target this year, top 5k secured last yr. Only way is up, right?

Well technically I don't have a break at all.

But in reality I mess about on here for a chunk of it.

It is tiring I do 7pm to 7am and you do get used to it

Sounds too good to be true, 12 hour shifts rotating like - two days, two nights, two off. Essentially one day because I sleep that first morning right through! Agency work sucks man.

Yeah sounds tough, I used to do a rotation shift..worked 3 nights in a row (10 hour shifts) then 2 days off 5 days on etc..it was terrible

I'm glad it's only till September tbh. Minimum wage too, time things have been paid for like rent, gas, electric, other bills, etc. I've got next to not a lot left. Makes me sort of understand why people just don't work. :p

No launch was ever done at 4 a.m. before. I am starting to think today, 12 July, is highly unlikely. Realistically, Wednesday, 13 July I'd say that's when they are aiming - either that or there have been multiple delays.

Last season was a strange one for me. I had a really good start to the season unlike most people then let it slip badly mid season. I then started to get it back at the end of the season but by that point it was far to late

What is your definition of 'crazy form'? Thinking about one of the hardest decisions of the game for me, when best to bring in a player who is showing potential. Especially at the start of the season when trying to recognise this year's Mahrez or Kane or Michu as opposed to a flash in the pan. A goal in two games in a row, is that enough to ping a transfer in. 3 games? What is it for you?

Ooooo, didn't take long for the controversial C word to raise it's head 😆

Personally, it's hard to quantify. The eye test counts for a bit. You could see Mahrez, for example, playing on MOTD and just think, "yeah, he does look the real deal".

Early on in the season, I'm often happier to jump on the bandwagon for no other reason than I know everyone else will, and for fear of missing the early price-rises and getting on early (often because I may not be able to afford them otherwise without surgery) I take the punt. If his form doesn't continue, at least I've made a few quid and move on.

This is probably THE biggest part of FPL. When do you jump onboard and when do you jump ship.... Always a gamble.

There needs to be something to back up the recent goal(s).

For example, Mahrez and Vardy looked to be very good prospects in 2014/15 but Pearson played neither of them regularly. Mahrez had also been very good in pre-season. Once it became clear that they were 1st choice players for Ranieri they became great value picks.

Another example is underlying stats - shots on target, chances created and so on. You can often get a read from those whether a player's performances over a game or two are a flash in the pan or something more likely to sustain.

A third example is the player who has just arrived in the PL from abroad. Payet had a great record at Marseille but that doesn't always transfer to PL success (Cabella). Once he showed himself to be suited to the PL then he became great value at 7.5m. But he could equally well have done a Depay.

A little high IMO but I always look at the points gained over 3 matches in terms of who I took out. Injury and selection an a player not usually consigned to my bench influences hit choices. Then again I am impulsive and wasted a few tfrs by looking at DGW's or my mini league position.

    to the admins

In case you are doing a site update soon, there is one function which I'd like to ask for. Even when i'm in the last page of the comments, can you keep the 'LAST' icon visible in the comment page area? Quite often I find that when I refresh the page to see newer comments, the discussion has already moved to a new page and I have to then click on 'LAST' or the new number again. If the 'LAST' icon is always present, the site would reroute me correctly.

I understand that this isn't a major inconvenience but its a small feature which I've felt is lacking on many occasions. If its possible to make this tweak, please do so. I hope you can understand what I've explained

Hi all, good luck with the new season etc... 🙂

Just been looking at the season ticker, can we no longer drag teams around to different positions? I realise that you can click on 'teams' and then use the arrows, but this is a much slower process and inferior to what the functionality was like in previous years. Or am I missing something?

Don't like it at all either.

Why you would change something from a simple drag system to making you click 60 times moving the cursor a little bit each time I have no idea just to put 5 teams in the order you want. Then having to do it another 60 times to try something different makes no sense to me. It may be optimised to mobile fine but we have a separate mobile site so surely the main site could still have the drag system and everyone could be happy.

As my 1st year as a member I maybe asking the wrong questions.
One of my essential decision making processes as others I am sure is to determine home/away fixtures as a difficulty factor.
I believe, if memory serves me right, the ratio of home/away points compared to other seasons dropped considerably and I believe the trend will continue with more sides choosing the counter attack tactic to generate points.
I think the sides to watch this term will be Everton, Soton, Swansea, Hammers and Palace who will use this policy to good effect so this is where I will be looking for mid and low priced players. The promoted sides will have to be considered in terms of budget.
The reason for this post is does anyone have access to the league stats for away points gained over the last few years? I will be putting less emphasis on home fixtures and more on general defensive qualities to capture differential points. I got in the top 1k last year purely by defensive picks. I could have done far better if captain picks were not so awful.

Everton look a good shout this year under Koeman esp their defenders.

Whammers and Palace look like they will go well.

SWN and STH could be anything but I fancy they might struggle.

I'll be interested to see how STK shape up with the view to using Butland as my gk.

Of the new teams, Middlesborough look good for defenders when at home. Have a great season! 🙂

        Have a good one yourself.
I threw Soton and Swans in the mix purely as a budget factor and the tactical style of their new managers.
        I always forget about Stoke.
        Cheers.

Two teams Sunderland and Swansea , have both been significantly better at home. They would be perfect for a rotation involving home matches (if they rotate, not checked yet)
While other teams show far less difference between home and away conceded goals, indicating best just to play them in any reasonable fixture home and away. Palace being an example

This. One factor I await is early Swans form. New managers usually look to improve the deficiencies of the past season so I expect a more sound defense from the swans even if their overall position does not improve.

Good point as was Palace. More money around for all teams but prices will go up accordingly. I think the pulling power of Koeman will have good effect together with an Everton squad that was great on paper but failed dismally under Martinez. All Everton fans will wax lyrical about the depth of the youngsters coming through.

If you are looking at defenders, the main thing is that the long-term average is 3 home clean sheets to 2 away clean sheets.

Over the last 3 seasons the ratio has been creeping closer but only by a little.

As TL says, there is divergence with different teams in any one season. But even that tends to even itself out over a longer timespan.

Statistically a home clean sheet is at least 40% more likely than an away one before taking fixture difficulty into account.

      1. Eze Really?
        • 10 Years

This is exactly what I was getting at as in the original post. The first 12 GW's of the season showed a massive trend towards less home wins if my memory serves me correctly. What you are saying is there was little difference by the season's end. I would be interested in an algorithm to show home benefits over away. Being an Everton supporter maybe having an impact because their home form was abysmal.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years

Last season was freakish in that regard. But the ratio regularised gradually (though not completely).

Bear in mind that my post concerned clean sheets, not wins.

You don't need an algorithm. Just count the clean sheets. That's what I do. 🙂

Apart from the new look site and apps what is the biggest change you expect to FPL this season?

I kind of expect them to introduce a mid GW sub/captain change, which I wouldn't like. My theory is the fact they are introducing free phone apps. This would help people with this change.

As much as it was innovative I am not sure the chips thing worked. It distorted league positions right up to the last GW and if one is looking for money in mini leagues I think it was an added headache. I expect something to change there.

The number of players being active for longer increased last season due to the chips so maybe they'll add one or two more? I wouldn't be surprised if they changed the second WC back to January only though as I don't think they anticipated the advantage serious players would have by combining it with DGW and other chips.

If they've been listening to us then they'll have ditched the AOA chip. I'm expecting one or two more chips, but I hope they don't introduce multiple captain changes within a given week. My own captaincy choices were truly dreadful last year, but that was my fault.

I agree re captaincy changes but they are about the only major game that don't allow it now so I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe, as DS said, the reason they haven't up to now is the lack of mobile apps.

Yes I suppose so. I'm a Luddite and only use my desktop for FPL, so I had not properly considered the implications of mobile popularity for FPL use.

I like the chips. Didn't necessarily make things easier but it gives us a chance to make points in the second half of the season where ranks change slowly.

I wouldn't like manual subs. That would kill the challenge.

I'm not sure we're going to see many changes. Think the majority liked the chips, except for maybe AoA - wildcard change worked out okay too.

I didn't really like the 2nd wildcard timing. I preferred the dilemma of the early season WC vs the late-season DGW WC. But when you can do both there's no choice to be made.

True... But sometimes the Jan WC became pointless to me because running through Christmas I had a great team in good form.

Some good points. The changes I would really like to see are ones I know won't happen. I do have a problem with the current bonus point distribution. I don't think things already rewarded (goals, assist etc.) should be included in the bonus scoring. Plus I don't think bonus points should be limited to 3 players per game (as standard). I'd prefer a bonus point system more like the Sky game.

"Early next week" surely implies Monday or Tuesday. Wednesday is midweek and Thursday/Friday would be later next week.

Or maybe he doesn't know for sure yet 🙂
