Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Virgil van Dijk

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

lamela is good to go on preseason form as the value into spurs attack - if he doesnt perform they will be plenty of other candidates at that price

no-one can see what is going to happen at man utd - success will be a fine thing but outside Shaw there is no clear value there
batshuayi's a gamble - martial has more possibilty of rational progression but 9.5 is a silly price for a player who is no ozil or payet

      A) Lamela
      - Underlying stats say, yes. Although at his price I think we can take a wait & see approach

      B) Batshuayi's starting chances, and prospects
      - Feel we've got plenty of great strikers to choose from so, idk if Id bother taking the risk

      C) Martial over Mahrez, Payet etc
      - Sure, but there's no *wrong* answer here

Stones is for me doubtful. If he moves to city he will be rotated. If he stays at Everton then he's a fine choice! Williams is 0.5m more than Taylor, so I don't get why people prefer Williams over Taylor.

Is the 8.5 price tag for Alli off putting for people ?

Kane scored over 20 2 seasons running and seems to be left out for having a slow start last year and dembelle being out.

Guys please help take a look at my team, I have some few head scratchers...

    Mandanda
    Shaw - Evans - N Taylor
    Hazard - Eriksen - Tadic - Siggy
    Aguero - Ibra - Gray

    Jaku, Lenihan, Paredes, Capoue

My questions are: For first 3 GWs
A: Eriksen + Tadic & Siggy (as it is now)
    Or
B: Mahrez + Deulofeu (or Bolasie)

Or I will put in a cheaper option for Eriksen (like Lamela) so I can improve defense, for example Paredes>VVD.

Inclined to agree that its a risk but he's been electric in pre-season and at the end of last season.

3 assists in one game the other day and been bombing down the right wing like possessed cheetah in past appearances. Also a BPS magnet apparently. Worth the risk and I can switch to Shaw for security if needed.

Mata plays RW but that was probably just some LVG senile arrangement. Mata is wasted unless he's in the 10 and always will be IMO. Same with Silva + KDB at City. If I had it my way I'd drop Rooney all together and have:

            Carrick - Blind
            Mkhi - Mata - Depay
            Rashford - Ibra

Looks mad but genuinely think that is their best set up assuming Depay actually reaches his potential.

Martial might lose his number 9 shirt but Jose won't roll over and give his captain's pens away just to feed Zlatan's already overweight ego. Rooney has always been on pens minus the odd Mata/Herrera switch up.

I'm assuming you will switch out Wazza? I would. I think you should find a way to fit Ibra in. If that bandwagon starts, you'll spend more catching it late.

I think Jose is setting up Rooney to fail. Subjectively been poor since about April for club and country. Saying he will only play 9 or 10 (and 9 is out of the question really with Ibra being a much better player and Rashford showing he's likely far more consistent), it's 10 or bust, and judging by Rooney's touch and short-pass vision, it'll be bust soon enough unless he sets the league on fire.

I don't buy the getting Ibra out of fear argument personally. All that can can be used on a bad boy midfield them if he starts well a simple - 4 could downgrade a premium mid who hasn't worked out and get him in a week. His age is a concern not mitigated by seeing him smash goals in a sub standard ligue a

Just the transfer screams shirt sales for a very commercially minded club, he might be a honey trap. But each to their own, we pick our teams and we chat about our reasons. I like Giroud he's a very good player but yeah when it boils down to it he isn't the guy you want on the end of a chance in a huge game that may define a title race

Not mad at all. The only striker they have is Emnes (A legend but way past his best) and although Ayew is being played OOP, Barrow has chalked up 2 goals and 4 assists in pre-season. Deserves his spot more than any. 5.0 could be a steal.

I know it is Krazy, but the kid is electric.

He gained two points per game last season with 10 minute cameos, but that worked out at 1 point every 20 minutes.

If Swansea do not buy any forwards it means he will get some serious game time ... and at 5.0 he could be invaluable

Kane great choice. Not many gone for him but he is a proven goalscorer with decent opening fixtures. Defence all good bar Paredes, is he nailed? But if you don't use him then I guess that doesnt matter. I prefer Mhikitaryan to Martial and would rather Fletcher or Leko than Capoue. V.nice team tho

Plague inc. is vaguely Risk-alike (well, it's strategy and played on a world map) and is awesome.

There's an old Windows game you can get on iOS these days called "Slay" that's also map/territory based army domination that's like strategy catnip.

If you're looking to play Risk in 2 minutes matches, Dicewars is what you're after 🙂

Yes, never be the red armies.

Spells danger for the other players.

          Go for S.America and N.America.

Go for S.America, then Africa, can protect both continents from just four territories. The take N.America, then Europe, then Asia, the Oz.

I like it, but I find you end up battling it out for too long in Africa.

Another strategy is to 'farm' (just winning the odd battle and getting a card) in northern Asia as one huge army in one country without ever trying to take it the whole continent.

Avoid getting into a war and then WHAMMO...trade a set of cards when you have enough for loads of men and invade the US from the Pacific.
