Moving Target

Moving Target – Christian Benteke

A reported target of Alan Pardew’s from the beginning of this transfer window, Christian Benteke finally completed his move to Crystal Palace on Saturday, joining the Eagles for a club-record fee, reportedly in the region of £27 million.

The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Selhurst Park and, speaking to the club’s official website, Pardew hopes the Belgian can fill the void up front that has been evident since the former Newcastle manager arrived in January 2015:

“We lack goals and some firepower and I would think Christian’s arrival will enhance every player within the squad. There’s one thing that’s always impressed me about him, he gets the sort of goals you would expect, but now and then he just pulls a rabbit out of the hat with a goal.”

The History

Born in Kinshasa, Zaire, Benteke’s family immigrated to Liege, Belgium in 1993. His big break came in 2004, when at the age of 14, he linked up with the Standard Liege youth set-up.

Two year later, the striker moved to fellow Belgian side Genk, and it was there where he made his professional debut in February 2008. In 2007/08, he bagged two assists in seven league appearances but, having only featured in three league matches in the first half of the following season, he re-joined Standard Liege in January 2009.

Between 2009 and 2011, Benteke took in loan spells at K.V. Kortrijk and KV Mechelen and began to make his mark. The striker scored 22 goals and claimed 10 assists in 56 league appearances, and returned to Genk ahead of the 2011/12 campaign.

Benteke scored 16 goals and registered nine assists in 36 league matches that season and, in the summer of 2012, Aston Villa swooped to sign the forward for a fee of around £7 million.

He instantly made an impression in the Premier League, scoring 19 goals and setting up four in 34 outings in his maiden campaign, and over the following two seasons he notched a further 23 goals and four assists in 55 Premier League appearances for a struggling midlands outfit.

Liverpool splashed out £32.5 million last summer to prise him away from Villa Park, but his sole season at Anfield was a disappointing one, yielding just nine goals and three assists in 29 league matches, with the striker falling out of favour under new Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Benteke featured regularly for Belgium at every youth level from Under 17 to Under 21, totalling 23 goals in 37 matches, before making his senior debut against Bulgaria in May 2010. An Achilles injury ruled him out of the 2014 World Cup, though he featured at Euro 2016 and currently has seven goals and three assists in 29 outings for his country.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that Palace produced more crosses than any side in 2015/16, the acquisition of Benteke makes sense – since arriving in the Premier League, the Belgian has been amongst the top three forwards for successful headers in four consecutive seasons.

Pardew generally prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation, so Benteke should enjoy service from the likes of Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha in the wide areas, while Yohan Cabaye and Jason Puncheon provide the creativity through the middle and from set-pieces.

Townsend has provided more key passes than any team-mate this term and with a natural finisher on board, his prospects of assists look to have taken a turn for the better. The summer signing from Newcastle has created a chance every 36 minutes this season.

Benteke has also shown his dead-ball capabilities, more so during his time with Villa, but with Cabaye also at Palace, it remains to be seen if he can wrestle those off the Frenchman.

Cabaye scored three of his four spot-kicks last term, but he did miss his last one, against Newcastle in April. So there’s perhaps a chance Benteke may be in line to take over penalty duties, which, as already seen this season, can prove so critical to a player’s appeal.

The major plus regarding Benteke’s Fantasy prospects are Palace’s fixtures over the coming month or so. Saturday’s favourable home clash against Bournemouth is followed by a four further kind match-ups (mid, STO, sun, eve), handing the forward the ideal platform to hit the ground running for his new team.

Given that Palace having failed to score in their opening two matches, the need for a quality addition in attack couldn’t have been more evident.

Connor Wickham only managed to score five league goals last season, and has been far from prolific during his time in the top flight. Benteke will surely come in as Pardew’s favoured frontman, with the only doubt perhaps over his minutes against Bournemouth due to a lack of pre-season action.

A price of 7.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) also looks attractive given his goal scoring record over the past four seasons, and with owners of Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic looking for value in the third forward slot, Benteke could fit the bill.

The Belgian’s ownership in FPL currently stands at just 2.4%, but if Palace play to his strengths, which they appear set up to do, there’s little doubt he could prove hugely successful.

While the likes of Alvaro Negredo, Andre Gray and Salomon Rondon have staked their claims for the cheap third forward spot in FPL, a player of Benteke’s calibre could prove hard to ignore should he thrive as the big fish in a small pond as he did during his time at Villa.

Price fluctiations aside that will backfire badly with Mahrez likely to get double figures against Swansea this week and Costa likely to match/better Ibra. So even if that's for one hit, you'll be doing very well to come out on top, possibly a 10% chance...

      2 Questions

      - What are the thoughts on Hull ? Tough fixtures but no rotation. Bob Snod is pivotal in all their attacks and could be a great option

      - With Arsenals fixtures picking up should we be looking at getting 'coverage'. Ozil in?

I know we all said it about Leicester last season but HuLOL's underlyings are quite different: 'It'll never last!' I fully expect United to put 4 or 5 past them and then the downwards spiral sets in.

I have little faith in Arsenal at the moment - I'd want to see evidence of good performances before investing in any of their squad.

Surely the extra 2.5m saved by going with a 9.0m forward such as Costa could match the scores of Ibra teams when you look ay that money reinvested

It looks like referees aren't going to allow defenders to hold at set pieces. Presumably this will result in more goals being scored by the big lumps up from the back. Are centre backs like VVD and Dann going to be a better investment than premium full backs such as Walker and Shaw?

      A few questions

      - Is it time to ditch Firmino? If so, would you rather upgrade to Mahrez/Ozil/Nolito or downgrade to Barkley/Mirallas and use cash in defense?
-Is Nolito a good option even without being completely nailed on in this high scoring City team?
      - Is Snodgrass the best 5.5m option? He is the most nailed on 5.5 imo, has plenty of PL experience, has good stats and Hull are actually up for the fight and have started strongly even beating the champions. Good fixtures on the horizon too.

Does owning both Aguero and Ibra actually open up captaincy choice rather than shutting it down?

By owning both, their major hauls are at least half covered with the majority of captaincies split between them. Does this then afford the freedom to take a punt on captaincy with Hazard or Mahrez or Sanchez etc as if the front 2 blank and your choice comes in, it could mean a huge rise up the ranks while being immune to major drops due to owning both. Ownership of Haz/Mahrez etc will always be split due to cost of front 2 so could be opportunity to capitalise.

This! Can never understand why the (wonderful) scoutcast gets recorded on an early weekday evening but then not uploaded as a podcast until about 30 seconds before deadline when it's no longer any use to most people?

Most aren't able to watch it on YouTube live, but if the audio was available for download the following day, for example, then you'd get a much bigger audience across the week and we wouldn't be left fretting over whether our dream transfer is a masterstroke or actually just the kind of thing that Granville is going to mock sardonically. Just seems a shame to produce all that fantasy wittering gold and then not make it available to people...

Depending on the core squad strength, is it wise to keep doing sideways moves to gain TV? Or too likely to get burnt? 😀
      i.e
      GW1 - Had Tadic
GW2- Got Lamela for Tadic (Avoided the Tadic fall and got Lamela's rise)
GW3- Could go back to Tadic maybe for 0.2 less and Lamela could get me a profit 0.1 if he rises again.

This is solely depending on gaining TV and playing the fixtures.

Maybe more precisely 'what do you think the number of points a WC should be worth?'

This number would make it easy to calculate whether point hits are a better idea, and would leave people to make their own decisions based on their own teams about whether the increase in TV would be worthwhile against the WC points value

With so much excitement in the pre season Scoutcast about how many options we have, how disappointed are you with a very clear template developing? What are your tips for breaking the mould, and which players do you feel will become valuable differentials over the coming weeks? After all, it's your differentials who truly win you your mini leagues.

I know this is meant well but I find these questions so repetitive. This early in the season ownership is fluid and difficult to know where and how differentials are defined, and the argument about whether players are necessary is never-ending.

I will agree that there is value in this question but I think it should be 'who, that hasn't performed up to expectations, has a chance to perform at or above expectations in the coming weeks'.

Templates and breaking templates occur every year, at all times, with our squads and real squads always changing and evolving. We cannot complain about players not being consistent and also complaining when they are so consistent they seem necessary to many. We must also remember that 50% ownership still means 50% ownership.

I think some of these questions are interesting but the answer to many of them have been talked about before (what is essential, what is coverage, what's the worth of a captain, etc.).

I know I'm in the minority but I'd love for a little more attention on players and teams present and future, with less focus on these always debated and largely unanswerable questions. Hot topics tend to be made intentionally unanswerable to provoke discussion and so I'd prefer if the scoutcast left those arguments aside, more often, so I can easily jettison them and listen to some of your more interesting observations! That said I really do enjoy hearing about your transfer plans.

With that in mind id like to hear thoughts on the Everton midfield and Everton's potential for attacking, as well as Crystal Palace's change with Benteke.

      Looking forward to it!

I'm not sure if this is lucky - more just a wasted chip (not that AoA is that useful anyway). Whatever formation he started with he would have ended up getting the same points so whatever he did he would have had the same outcome

Ayew --> Barkley went well and he now has a nice run of fixtures. Although I can't believe he missed that chance from the Bolasie cross...!

Glad to have him though as I've now been forced to lose Baines to accomodate Ibra. I think Everton are going to have a good season this year.

Benching Jakupovic Capoue and Morgan wasn't that great. Saving my FT to get Ibra in for gw3 was a week too late, so missed out on some big points there as well.

Rough: Kept faith with Vardy over Ibra (saving the FT and 1.5m ITB from week 1), swiftly made the change after the game on Friday :D. Benched Capoue and Jaku over Foster and Redmond (although i'm sure most did this).

Smooth: Stuck with Gray in the face of falling ownership and possible value losses (something that I may not have done in previous seasons). Walker proving himself to be a fantastic pick.

      Rough;

Another goal keeping haul left on the bench! Heaton's turn this week!

Rough: besides Aguero, all my attackers shot blanks but I inexplicably put on a Salomon (C)ondon as a risk to counter my lack of Ibrahimovic. A straight net loss of 11 for the armband switch, plus another net loss of 4-8 because I was too stubborn to follow the crowd.

      I now own Zlatan.

Having been concerned with a template forward line already forming, I actually really like owning both of the big Manchester guys because now I can take captaincy risks more easily since I will have half their points covered already. Sanchez and Hazard could be great differentials for the armband and I can be more rational about the choices since I don't have any ownership fears now.

      A strange game-week.
Smooth: 45 points from my first 3 players (Ibrahimovic, Valencia & captain Aguero).
Rough: The next 6 all failed, only 12 points between them.
Rough but Smooth: Payet and Carroll both missed out through injury, so Capoue was promoted into the team from 2nd position on the bench and I finished with 67.

Considering that I had played my wildcard to bring in Ibrahimovic, I would not count this as a success. I should perhaps have taken a hit or two to bring him in instead - but far better would have been to have included him in my initial squad or made provision to get him in more easily if he hit the ground running, as he did.

1] get ibra [in order to get him, i would have picked redmond and foster in my team]
2] get vardy [instead i went for vardy, i picked deulofeu and hart]

this has cost me 22pts in gw 1 and 11pts in gw 2 .. this is enormous, 33pts in two gws for just missing on ibra and getting vardy instead .. and more of it, i lost 0.1m on hart, missed 0.1m rise on ibra and 0.1m rise on redmond .. why some people advised me to get vardy for better value .. i'm completely demolished by 33pts in only 2 gws .. should have been in the top 1000 right now ..

      A. Vardy to Costa;
      B. Vardy to Lukaku (if pressers confirm he is fully fit);
      C. Deulofeu and Lamela to Barkley and Ramirez (2 FTs);
      D. Stones to Holding; or
      E. Deulofeu to Townsend?

      2FT
      0.5 in the bank

      Foster Jak
      Shaw Stones Friend Souare Amat
      Hazard Martial Townsend Redmond Capoue
      Kun Ibra Gray

not sure who to transfer. Martial and Townsend have good fixtures next gameweek.
Should I do Stones to Williams?
      Any ideas?

      Advice please..

      Foster/Juku
      Friend/Stones/Valencia/Amat/Evans
      Townsend/Mahrez/Hazard/Deulofeu/Fletcher
      Aguero/Ibra/Gray

I have two free transfers and thinking of swapping out Mahrez for Pogba and Gray for Benteke.

With Palace fixtures, and despite their slow start, I'm not scared of doubling up on tekkers and townsend.

I'm more worried about the consequences of dropping Mahrez and am worried Pogba isn't going to score enough points as he plays deep.

      Thoughts?

      Thanks

      Which would you get?

      A) Tadic (doubling on Redmond too)

      B) Townsend

Hi everyone, quick question for the seasoned pros: I want to make this week's transfer when I've seen if everyone makes it through the midweek league cup games unscathed and when the weekend team news has been confirmed towards the end of the week .... But my question is does this incur the risk of price increases?

Yep, there will be several price changes tonight, as there were last night

I also like to wait until after I've at least had a couple of drinks. Helps focus the mind, and stop that cautious voice in my head!

I'm the last person you should ask! Reckless is my middle name 😉 If I think someone I want is going up or someone I want to sell is going down then I would usually take a chance and do it early

it's just about whether you want to take a calculated risk on players not getting injured in order to get a little ahead of the game in terms of price changes.

Sometimes I like to wait until Friday, but this week I'll do mine tonight as I wouldn't be able to do the moves after today due to price changes.

Yes, but you can keep an eye on who will rise and fall in price here: http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/

Yea agree with Pompeyfan... Generally you want as late as possible for injury/rotation reasons unless they're price changes.

There are a few sites you can see who is likely to rise and drop. At the minute I'm find this one the most accurate: fiso.co.uk

FYI I did my 2 FTs this week already and went Firmino/Lingard -> Lamela/ Barkley because of price changes and fairly nailed on.

I don't think the amount they spent on him has anything to do with it at this stage. Especially under Koeman, he will only play him when hes ready.

I'm really annoyed at myself for buying Lamela instead of getting Bolasie who has better fixtures and frees up a million for moves like Gray --> Benteke. Very miffed indeed

Wildcarded because it seems to me Zlatan is essential right now

      Foster, Jaku

      Shaw, Walker, Souare, Azpilicueta, Friend

      Bolasie, Hazard, Redmond, Townsend, Snodgrass

      Gray, Ibra, Kun

Was gonna swap Shaw for Valencia but now Shaw's price has gone up and I like him anyway
Also really like the idea of Benteke, use this opportunity of wildcard or wait to see match fitness and performance, in international break also

Get rid of your benching headache in midfield imo.

Would leave 1 million spare for Benteke. Wouldn't include Townsend in a wild card.

My moves would be to downgrade Snodgrass/Townsend to a 4.5 and upgrade the other. Change Gray to Negredo and leave money spare for Benteke.

Agree on the midfield issue. There is enough quality at 4.5/5.0 to bank some money and have reliable bench fodder.

Disagree regarding Gray. I'd stick with him myself.

Hi all. Which of these 3 Leicesters players should I play this weekend against Swansea? (yes I know I need to transfer the first two out but they've already price dropped)

      Okazaki
      Albrighton
      Morgan

Because mistakes were made. As I said...I missed their price drops and they both started last game and are both facing Swansea. Every week there's something more pressing and I don't take a hit rather than just bench them.

Off topic and looking ahead, but captain choice in GW 4 is going to be interesting!

Spoilt for choice this week (Kun, Ibra, Hazard) and then no obvious candidates next week!
