This Much We Know – Gameweek 7

A fading Swede, a rejuvenated Brazilian Bobby, West Ham’s one man crusade and the rich array of Fantasy talent available at Stoke City. Bear with us – it’s the lessons learned from Gameweek 7…

Only stats can save Ibrahimovic…
He needed an end product against Stoke but, despite his clocking up another fistful of goal attempts, Ibrahimovic failed to find a way through.

Prior to the Potter’s failure, there was talk that he’d require a double-figure return to quell a fire sale over the international break.

Having blanked, those sales are now underway, with the Swede facing a potential 0.3 price drop by the time he takes to the pitch at Anfield in Gameweek 8.

The statistics offer a crumb of comfort – in fact, it’s almost a whole loaf.

With an effort on goal every 17.5 minutes, there’s only some fella down at the Etihad who can match Ibrahimovic for goal threat this season.

And yet, while we appear to trust Sergio Aguero to overcome his White Hart Lane blank and justify his lofty price tag, patience and belief in Zlatan seems to have worn thin.

Those who are holding can cling to the underlying statistics and refuse to believe that he can go on failing. They may yet have a case.

Nobody puts Bobby in the corner….
Unlike Ibrahimovic, Roberto Firmino managed to silence the doubters.

His 12-point return in South Wales provided an emphatic response to those quick to lower him down the Liverpool midfield pecking order.

Firmino’s importance to the Liverpool cause has always been there for all to see but erratic returns, alongside blossoming team-mates, raised a red flag.

Now we can settle on Firmino, for now at least – watching to see if he can maintain such levels and finally emerge as the key option amongst Klopp’s middle men.

We haven’t got Payet…I don’t think he understands….
Everybody can accuse West Ham of being a one-man team. Dimitri Payet is so celebrated by Hammers fans; they’re almost resigned to it themselves.

Saturday’s extraordinary goal against Middlesbrough highlighted that Payet is willing to take on the opposition on his own to attempt to rescue West Ham’s season.

With opponents now working out that if you put a tall bloke on Michail Antonio, you can cut off West Ham’s goals, Payet’s one-man mission is well-timed.

But such a crusade is not yet enough for us to take notice.

No Fantasy manager is getting carried away – Payet is set to enjoy a very slight rise in ownership but, such is the competition for midfield slots, he remains on the back burner.

Antonio, on the other hand, is already suffering from the volatile and fickle nature of this season’s market – he’s shed over 25,000 owners ahead of Gameweek 8 and a price drop beckons before deadline.

Shining Son is blinding us to Alli’s upturn….
We’re all loving Son Heung-min right now.

He’s got the lot – goals, chance creation, out of position prospects. What’s not to love?

Certainly, Son’s transfer traffic is busy – no player has earned more new owners ahead of Gameweek 8 so far, and numerous price rises are on the way before the next ball is kicked.

We can’t argue – Son shot up a few more levels in our midfield Watchlist: we’ve definitely bought in.

But, in Dele Alli, there is another.

Alli’s form appears to have piggybacked on Son – there’s a new spring in his step, a devil in his play. Suddenly Spurs look to have a cutting edge, and everyone is wondering how a fit-again Harry Kane will fit in.

We’ll take Grant now and worry about the money later…
With every little 0.1 helping to jump aboard speeding form bandwagons, Lee Grant is an unexpected gift.

Relieving Shay Given for the Gameweek 6 draw with West Brom, the loanee keeper was outstanding at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Grant has surely cemented his start while Jack Butland remains stricken, with Fantasy managers pondering short-term investment ahead of an obliging run for the Potters that might just promise the odd clean sheet.

Okay, so doubling with Pickford looks risky business and, eventually, we may be facing an embarrassing lack of riches in goal. But those extra funds now can go a long way, and if Butland’s recovery should hit the buffers, Grant’s shelf-life could even be extended.

And Stoke may even have more to offer…
It was pretty clear that Liverpool would come to regret selling Joe Allen.

We saw, during the summer, that there were elements to his game that failed to get the opportunity to surface at Anfield.

Allen has already flourished at Stoke, with Mark Hughes trusting him with a central role, pushed up behind the striker.

Two goals in two games – nobody is getting carried away – but at 4.8 the Allen option is another unexpected offering from the Potteries.

Shift Van Anholt and we’ll all love Moyes….
So David Moyes is toying with the idea of deploying Patrick van Aanholt as a wing-back, or even a winger.

Having seen the Dutchman defend, he then watched him come off the bench to score a precious equaliser from the wing against West Brom.

By piecing together those two sets of events, Moyes has reportedly started to ponder the idea of playing Van Aanholt as a winger.

Keep us posted David. We’re very interested.

Ranieri has given us fair warning….
We’ve gone right off Leicester City.

We can’t get rid of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez fast enough, and we don’t really believe that Islam Slimani can change matters.

But, defensively, the Foxes have shown promise at the King Power and, with a few flashes of form, we may look again.

However, some chilling words from Claudio Ranieri has already doused those thoughts.

Apparently, he feels he needs to rotate more. That might just mean some more minutes for Ahmed Musa and Demarai Gray but probably not enough for us to even notice.

We miss Leicester City.

Ivanovic was also served notice…
In fact, he had about 18-months of supporters and pundits putting his performances under the microscope before, finally, he gets told to sit on the timber by Antonio Conte at Hull City.

We wondered if the Italian’s shuffle would see the Ivanovic option killed off for good and, while the Serb may well be revived, there’s no question that he faces a mighty battle to regain a starting role.

Particularly with Victor Moses in his way.

No, seriously, Victor had a cracking game and, while he’s playing at wing-back, there’s absolutely no chance I’ll be tempted to buy him.

Everyone’s a winner. Except for Branislav.

Pardew’s dressing up the Benteke air raid…
Alan Pardew is talking up how he’s re-built his Palace side – how they’ve progressed as a team.

Nobody can argue – the Eagles have become a very different proposition over the course of just three or four weeks. Nobody will relish playing Crystal Palace right now.

But, in truth, that’s probably got something to do with the fact that nobody really knows how to handle Christian Benteke and two big centre backs, coupled with an everlasting supply of crosses.

The new Palace are proving hugely effective and us Fantasy managers are left pondering just how much damage Benteke can inflict for his 7.6 price tag.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It would be interesting to have a quick insight on how well everybody does in terms of squad value and finances.

How much is your squad value + in money in the bank ?
      Mine is 101.7 + 1.1 = 102.8 (which I think is decent).

Hopefully we are close enough to the DZ that this isn't too overwhelming. Didn't feel long enough to be an article. Apologies if it hurts your eyes, I'll be on later to respond if there is any interest.

As I see the discussion on here about shipping Ibrahimovic and searching for his replacement, I think an argument can be made that the search should go beyond just forwards and also focus on a shift in formation to 3-5-2.

Here are the top 25 scoring FPL attackers so far this season:

Player / Position / Points / Double Digit Hauls
Sanchez ARS MID 49 (3); De Bruyne MCI MID 49 (3)
      Capoue WAT MID 48 (3)
      Costa CHE FWD 46 (2)
      Sterling MCI MID 45 (2)
Coutinho LIV MID 43 (2); Milner LIV MID 43 (3); Son TOT MID 43 (2)
Walcott ARS MID 42 (1); Lukaku EVE FWD 42 (2); Antonio WHU MID 42 (2)
      Lallana LIV MID 41 (2)
      Agüero MCI FWD 39 (2)
Firmino LIV MID 38 (2); Defoe SUN FWD 38 (1)
Ibrahimovic MUN FWD 37 (1); Fer SWA MID 37 (1)
      Cazorla ARS MID 36 (0)
      Snodgrass HUL MID 35 (1)
      Chadli WBA MID 34 (2)
Defour BUR MID 33 (2); Hazard CHE MID 33 (2); Rondón WBA FWD 33 (1)
Mané LIV MID 31 (1); Payet WHU MID 31 (2)

Overall, with 19 midfielders and only 6 forwards, it seems pretty clear that the midfielders are dominating so far this year. Many still cling to the belief that 3-4-3 is always the way to go, but looking further at this list makes the case even more emphatically for a strong 3-5-2.

In terms of elite performance and explosiveness, midfielders are dominant. 8 of the top 10, with a range of price points, are midfielders. Additionally, the only players to have three different games with returns of 10+ pts so far are all midfielders. Overall, 36 double digit hauls for midfielders and only 9 such hauls from forwards.

That range of price points is what is key, in my opinion -- pretty much every expense category of midfielder is on this list, with several prices being represented multiple times. The forwards are really divided into 4 premiums above 9m and two value options in the 6-7m range, meaning not much flexibility in terms of team structure and direct transfers to replacements.

We often don't look at it this way, but giving yourself better odds of hitting the right one is a crucial part of team selection. If you are playing 3 forwards then having only 6 top performers to choose from makes for a very challenging situation of only 2 forwards for each spot. However, filling 5 spots from 19 midfielders who are firing well puts you in a much more navigable spot -- almost 4 for every one.

Sidestepping the Capoue debates of the past fortnight a bit, loading up on five midfielders of at least 6.5m each could very well be the way to go until more forwards hit better form. The point stands that beyond Diamonde, not many uber options exist as injury replacements at forward, making the formation less appealing. However, one way to offset that could be to look at the 4th midfielder as the first man off the bench.

This is the real issue with the formation, a 5th mid is generally some 4.5-5m defensive mid who gets 2 points every game. A cheap 3rd striker is almost always a sub, lucky to get a point.

I feel like this is a small but very important point. There are a lot of midfielders who are playing upfront. They are essentially strikers who get more points for goals/assists and get points for cleans.

I would go 3-5-2, but with Bolasie and Capoue as 4th/5th mids I don't feel it's justified against Kun/Tekkers/Trollaku. Surely it comes down to who you have as front 3? All well and good having 5 firing mids, but that will deplete the points you earn from your forwards as you won't have the money in your front 3.

Doesn't quite work like this I am afraid. Need to take into account fixtures and swings, pricing points, impact on defence. Deeney on Pens at 6.8 will outscore any 5th mid at 6.8 IMO. You then would need a cheap useless forward but who? 3-5-2 just wont work and is not for me. Diamonde with 5 midfielders I want doesn't work without making defence garbage. GL with it though.

Agreed, Worzel. Too many factors to take into account here. Although, get it right with 3-5-2 this season and it's going to seriously pay off( as of yet). Would need a bit of luck and cany see past 3-4-3 going forward.

                  I don't think I do.

Lallana/Walcott/Son are all priced like a 3rd striker and outperforming all 3rd striker options.

Plenty of mids in the 7.5 range could outscore Deeney though. That's just cherry-picking one price point

Aguero Defoe Diomande allows an amazing midfield 5 with 2 Arsenal, 2 Liverpool and Payet plus an ok defence

LOL. Think I will keep Costa and Deeney and avoid Diamonde/Defoe for the sake of getting Lallana/Walcott but cheers for the insight.

Thanks for the reply. I would argue that it does work like this actually -- we're all looking at pretty nearly the same finite pool of cash to spend on our attackers, and the fixtures, swings, pricing points that you mention would actually necessitate plenty of available replacements on hand to account for them.

Good post mate, cheers. A 3-5-2 with Stuani and Snodgrass would be my choice if I had a WC. Could have Spurs and Arsenal defender with Aguero and Lukaku and 4 big hitter mids.

Well stated TM245, part of me wishes you would keep this kind of knowledge to yourself 😉

As a 3-5-2 advocate, your 2nd to last paragraph is the most important in my opinion

I also would like to add another reason why mids have been outscoring fwds for the last few seasons now is because they dominate the somewhat flawed BPS system

I just had a look at my team following this post and with a bit of shuffling I could have the following:

                Heaton
                Koscielny Vertonghen McAuley
                Firmino Sterling Son Walcott Coutinho
                Aguero Costa

                Bench: Pickford Holebas Diomante Amat

It's a tempting idea, the midfielders would be very easy to swap out if anyone else came into form (Ericsson etc)

i would argue further that there is a case not to see it as 343 or 352 but just a flexible front 7. to do this you need 8 playing forwards all of which can be called on depending on fitness. capoue will have done til now but now team values have increased i would say its possible to have 5 strong playing mids aguero and 2 of the so called mid priced forwards and rotate based on fixtures whether u play 352 or 343. this is the approach i have adopted and so far its working for me.

I like a 352 if I can have Son and Walcott as my cheapest midfielders. The problem with that is it doesn't leave much in defence. In a 343 I can have Austin and Allen which allows for more at the back

Finding a good third striker has always been easier than finding a fourth/fifth midfielder for me.

There are more midfielders who turn out to be dead weight in a 3-5-2 than there are strikers who turn out to be dead weight in a 3-4-3. Son and Lallana could very easily become the next Redmond and Ramirez, whereas Defoe is almost definitely here to stay.

What you have to look at is how the strikers score points in comparison to the forwards. It is arguable that forwards get points from the tricky fixtures easier than the midfielders.

They also have bigger potential to go on high scoring bursts of form so you want to be able to switch between them to take advantage. Granted the higher priced mids also go on these bursts of form but I definitely think you are more likely to hit form switching between deeney, defoe, ighalo, bony, benteke plus

Sorry posted before I was finished.

....plus...any other budget forward that may come up like Austin, borja, gray, negredo etc etc than trying to go from siggy to arnie to son to lamella to snodgrass to Antonio to lallana to cazorla etc etc.

I think the mids can get some high scores in random games where a goal assist cs and three bonus does great for their ppg but trying to predict when they will do it can be a frustrating game.

Tldr forwards are more predictable and score higher when in form imo while mids can generate high returns in a given gw but go anonymous for long stretches too. The higher returns for mids for a goal and cs can skew their ppg hence why people go first forwards more than mids.

This is, in a way, a flawed opinion. There is typically only 1 striker per team, whereas there can be anywhere from 3-5 viable midfield options on a team. It's also a lot easier to find a cheap midfielder who can get points as a 1st bench option than a a cheap striker (5.5 or less)., so it's easier to make a heavier striker line with the money saved in the 5th mid.

You just need to make steady transfers of a number of weeks to sort the DEF out. Monitor Jaku but if your happy with Foster then leave it. Amat, Pieters and Kone have decent fixtures coming up but consider changing Friend and Evans to Smith and Holebas. Probably also downgrade front 3 to upgrade Bolasie and Redmond. DEF can get you through this week so maybe dp Ibra/Costa and Bolasie to Deeney to Pool mid

I'd say yes. Grant will lose his place when Butland is back, but Pickford could keep his spot even with Mannone back

No problem IMO. Pickford unlikely to lose his place when Mannone comes back and you'll get plenty of warning on Butland's return

              Heaton (Robinson)
              Valencia Baines Evans (Kone Amat)
              Mane Firmino Antonio Puncheon (Capoue)
              Aguero Ibra Benteke
              2FT 0.7itb

              A) Ibra, Antonio > Deeney, Sanchez (with 1.1 left to upgrade a 5.5 defender to Bellerin if I want)
              B) Ibra, Mane > Lukaku, Sanchez (although I want both Mane and Firmino for Liverpool's upcoming fixtures)

Hi Guys! Quick poll in late ours:

              A) Ibra, antonio -> Sanchez, benteke -4
              B) Ibra, snodgras -> Sanchez, Austin -4
B)Ibra, baines, antonio, snod -> Sanchez, Son, holebas, Deeney -12
              C) Ibra, baines, antonio, snod -> Sanchez, Son, Williams, Austin -12

              Current team 0,6 ITB:
              Heaton - Pickford
              Valencia - McAuley - Baines - Smith - Amat
Sterling - Antonio, Firmino, Snodgras, Capoue
              Ibra - Kun - Lukaku

Please tell me -12 is pure stupidity before internationals - cause i know it is 😀

-12 is pure stupidity before internationals, but sometimes stupidity pays off (even if often it doesn't)

I'd go A from those, but not sure on Tekker's fixtures short term

Disastrous 22 pts last gw after getting 82 pts in GW6 with the same squad. 2 FT's to use. Any thoughts on what to do?

              Foster Pickford

AOA a possibility this week with the terrible fixtures my defence have.

Dont know why some people are hesitating Antonio --> Son move

Antonio output is on decline while Son is on the up. Spurs in 2nd place while westham in relegation zone.

Ofcourse Antonio has done well in opening weeks but think its time to move on (same logic applies if you getting Theo over Son)

I like 5 but with a Hull man over Smith. Purely based on the next 8 fixtures for Hull. Maybe Davies, could be gold in the next 8, he's been getting good bps and good chances of cleanies now plus goal threat.

I've got him and keeping him. From gw9, their fixtures are the best in the game for a long, long time. Everyone is saying how they haven't kept a cleanie but they've had the hardest fixtures of any of the bigger clubs. Plenty of cleanies and assist to come up until new year I reckon.

I haven't watched South Park since the 90s. But good for those guys, quite a run, almost Simpsons territory. Like a 300,000 mile Honda that just needs the occasional oil change.

Gee alot of effort into this post.. Either trade out zlatan ramirez hazard for something like benteke/deeney, walcott, son and take the hits or wildcard

(That should also leave miney itb for the following week to upgrade antonio if he fails to fire again)

I would wildcard with that team. Jay has just made a good WC team if you can afford it 😛

                                    Foster (Japu)
                                    Walker Valencia Williams (Kelly Amat)
                                    Sterling Firmino Antonio Capoue (Fletcher)
                                    Aguero Deeney Lukaku

                                    1 FT 4.5 ITB

Already did Ibra > Deeney. Other free, would you:-

                                    A. Fletcher > Walcott
                                    B. Antonio > Sanchez

I figure that'd give me more balance as well. But at the same time, I'm hesitant because I'm more inclined to trust Sanchez...

Very content to try save this transfer after having such a good week, but there are afew options i am weighing up which id like some thoughts on.

                                    Pickford
                                    Koscielny valencia stones
                                    Sanchez Antonio Firmino Bolasie
                                    Lukaku Aguero Benteke

                                    Foster Capoue Stones Amat

                                    1Ft, 0.1itb

                                    A) save
                                    B) valencia, antonio > 4.6(maybe bournmouth defender or holebas), sterling
                                    D) bolasie, antonio > snodgrass, son

                                        You have two Stones..

                                        I'd say A.
