Scout Notes – Champions League – Wednesday

A defensive display of some merit is undone by a refereeing decision of rather less quality as the first leg of Leicester City’s Champions League quarter-final ends in narrow defeat.

Here’s how the action in Madrid played out.

Atletico Madrid 1 Leicester City 0

An Antoine Griezmann penalty made it advantage Atletico in their quarter-final with the Foxes.

The goal was reward for the home team’s dominance even if the penalty, awarded for a foul on the Frenchman by Marc Albrighton, should never have been given – replays showed that the offence took place outside the Leicester box.

The visitors came to defend and did so impressively, generally reducing Madrid to pots at goal from long distance. But the Foxes rarely strung more than a few passes together all night and of the five shots they managed, none of them were on target.

Atletico only worked Leicester keeper Kasper Schemichel sporadically themselves, perhaps unsurprisingly as the match involved two teams who excel on the counter-attack.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare named his strongest available XI after ringing the changes in the weekend loss at Everton, with Danny Simpson and Christian Fuchs returning at full-back, Wilfred Ndidi and Riyad Mahrez back in midfield and Shinji Okazaki supporting Jamie Vardy up front.

Yohan Benalouane, who had a fine match, continued to fill in for the injured Wes Morgan, the skipper travelling with the squad as he continues to recover from a back injury.

Fellow centre-half Robert Huth will be suspended for the second leg of the tie on Tuesday after picking up a yellow card in Madrid, which will please his 1.9% ownership as Shakespeare will surely now play him in Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace while potentially resting many other key players once again.

The Foxes’ main Fantasy asset, the 16.4%-owned Vardy, performed his usual pacey irritant role well. But he lacked for service with Okazaki relatively close by in the first-half and was completely starved of the stuff once Andy King came on for the Japanese international after the break to shore up a midfield that had been over-run for 45 minutes.

Vardy’s ownership will now have very real concerns on his pitch time at Selhurst Park after the striker was replaced on the hour mark in Sunday’s defeat. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Shakespeare gave Vardy’s replacement from the bench last night, Islam Slimani, a start up front. Indeed, the Algerian was named in the first XI at Goodison and bagged the Foxes’ first goal.

Despite returning five goals and an assist in his last six Gameweeks, Vardy suffered a loss of 13,000+ owners prior to last weekend’s deadline, with more than 33,000 already ushering him to the exit ahead of this weekend.

Other Leicester rotation risks include the 8.6%-owned Riyad Mahrez  – a peripheral figure in Madrid – and the industrious Albrighton (1.4%), who could be rested against Palace, with Demarai Gray the obvious alternative.

The Foxes have now lost back-to-back matches after winning six straight in all competitions when Shakespeare first took the helm.

A trip to the in-form Palace – one of three consecutive away league fixtures up next for the Foxes – suggests that the dip in form could continue while the Champions League remains such a major, if understandable, distraction.

The Foxes had their double Gameweek 37 confirmed with yesterday’s announcement, although an away trip to Manchester City, combined with a King Power Stadium clash against Spurs, are hardly favourable match-ups.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Benalouane, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez, Drinkwater, Ndidi, Albrighton, Okazaki (King 45), Vardy (Slimani 77).
Subs not used: Zieler, Chilwell, King, Amartey, Slimani, Gray, Ulloa.

    Current Team:

    Pickford

    Pieters - Valencia - Alonso

    Alli - Son - Sanchez - Coutinho

    Carroll - Kun - Lukaku

    Foster - McAuley - Clayton - Amat

    2FT:

    A: Sanchez/Carroll > Zaha/Kane (3-4-3)

    B: Clayton/Kun > Zaha/Kane (3-5-2)

    Thoughts, or any other suggestions?

With doubles in mind am I right to be looking at each individual player and seeing if there replacement is worth a transfer/hit?
E.g Valdes > Forster gw35 means I can get Forster or HULL and play over Pickford BOU and also get him for his doubles and gw38 STO(I think)

Yes, though you always risk injury/rotation by going early. I presume you don't have a wildcard?

In that particular example I don't think it's worth a hit, Pickford at home to Bournemouth is really not a bad fixture.

Which players everyone will be getting for their bench? Think I'm just going for TC in that week...

Looking at my current team, I'm not in bad position for GW37 even without WC but I cant really find enough options to fill the bench... 😮

GW37 team will look like: 4-4-2, done and dusted 😳

      Hennessey
      VALENCIA, BRUNT, KONE, CLICHY
      SANCHEZ, ERIKSEN, SANE, SILVA
      KANE, COSTA/JESUS/Luka

Yeah, too many factors and changes likely to happen by then... That side is just based on current status of my team, not far from this team.

Valencia to Mustafi/Kosc or some random punt will be an option 😀

      - Should sanchez be replaced? Hazard is someone I am considering.

      - Any other change required? Already used my 2FT.

      - I am chasing in ML, and have to cover about 100-125 points, the only way i see is to go different

      - would love to have any other Suggestions and opinion about the team

      Jaku(heaton). Alonso-bavies-Holgate(pieters, MAGUIRE) Alli-sanchez-firmino-siggy(tarroll) Lukaku-Kane-origi

          Hi mate

Given the fact you're chasing, yeah you need to differentiate. Given the stage the season is at, though, the main source for your differentiating may well be captaincy. You have a good team there.

I need more on your ML rival(s), though, to totally advise - who do they own you don't and vice versa, who are they captaining? For example, if your main rival has triple Spurs but no Kane, then 100% captain Kane. For me this weekend, many will have Kane Alli Davies/Walker in my ML so I will captain Eriksen to differentiate. That tends to be where you make up the points you need to reel in your ML rivals in my experience - you can't be captaining a player like Son every week and get those points to catch up, and you shouldn't be either because that's obviously not a sustainable strategy, those punts normally give you about 2 points 🙂

          Hope that helps.

Hey individual. How you doing ?

Most of them have triple spurs, so that means i don't have eriksen.
            Some have coutinho,king,Costa, Aguero

Many won't have Kane this week, so i am thinking to captain Kane or maybe TC , let's see where it goes.as this will be crucial in my chase. My plan was to remove sanchez for next 3 and bring in hazard. But on the other he faces Middleborough, so maybe he might stay in my team.

Another headache other than armband this week for me Is which back 3 to start? I feel 4/5 will give me returns, hopefully i don't pick the wrong one

Hey mate. Yeah alright, trying to work out too if I want Kane eventually - have Vert, Eriksen, Alli here and I guess looking at an eventual -4 to do Vert -> x and Kane in.

I'd probably say you need to have Kane armbanded in the context - TC would be huge, but I might prefer it on Sanchez in 36 maybe? Depends when you wildcard. I blew mine on Kun in 27.

Would give Sanchez Boro. Haz always flatters to deceive, and with those 2 you will always be taking OUT the one which explodes and bringing IN the blanker lol... I own both to stop this 😀 but I had to wildcard to do it.

Defence wise, I think Alonso Bavies Holgate is the right 3. Alonso you have to play for the attacking, Bavies should get you the CS and Holgate vs BUR surely plays over Pieters (on holiday) and Maguire (Hull not looking great).

Worth doing Aguero > Kane, or save for an extra 34dgwer (pre wc)?

          Jaku
          Alonso Davies Valencia
          Sanchez Alli Sane Siggy Zaha
          Aguero Lukaku

Hi mate, since you don't have the triple Spurs so I'd be tempted to go Kane in, then mess around with it more next week - I think you can then afford Kaku->Ibra if you do Kun->Kane, yeah? Might be a worthy approach. I have triple Spurs and Kun - Vert in defence instead of Kane up top. Bet it doesn't work out (for me) lol

Cheers. I should do it, just reluctant to sell Aguero who's scoring for Kane who isn't (yet).
Wish I could just afford Siggy > Eriksen tbh.

Cheers Jinswick. Thought about this as well. Clean sheet odds favor slightly Robertson and WBA do not have much to play for. However tempted to play Brunt as there is a chance that he plays in midfield again.

Could you do Walker & Ibra > Someone + Kane for this week? Walker & Ibra might get 12 points between them, whereas Kane could get 16 by himself.... then again you have 3x Spurs players already so you could be covering Kane's goals with assists... I'm not convinced of Ibra personally but when i don't have him he scores points so probably best to keep him.

Need Ibra for my head to head! Player I'm playing always captains him. Also need him for next DGWs so I'm holiding I think! But cheers for the input 🙂

Sorry for the hilariously dull question, but is there some reason De Roon didn't play in Boro's last game? I was kind of planning on using AOA to play him for their doubles in GW34 (for the inevitable 4 points)

How's this for my WC team? Pulling the trigger early to try claw points back in my mini league.

                  Caballero / Pickford
                  Sakho / Holgate / Azpi / Yoshida / Stones
                  Coutinho / Zaha / Alli / Ward-Prowse / King

Has anyone came up with a good team of 15x DGW'ers for GW37? Best i can do is below. And to ensure a full 15, it involves selling - Lukaku (WAT), Eriksen (MUN, lei), Haz (wbm, WAT), King (BUR), Coutinho (whm) - all of whom could easily get double figures that week... Starting to wonder whether WC & BB will be all it's cracked up to be!

                  Ospina, Pickford
                  Stones, Alonso, Vert, Yosh, Evans
                  Sane, Alli, Sanchez, Pedro, Phillips
                  Costa, Kane, Gabi.

Some teams will be playing for nothing GW37 so rotation will be afoot. Wait for much nearer the time and pick players from teams who will definitely still be playing for something.

I'm assuming Chelsea & Spurs will be fighting for the title so there's 6x players straight away... Plus Man city to ensure champs league spot ( althoughh pep rotates anyway)

That's what i was thinking, Lukaku is well capable of scoring 4 v Watford if he is in flat track bully mode, watford looked gash against spurs too, like tey're already on their holidays

From some playing around, but several may not even start:

                      Caballero Pickford
                      Alonso Rojo Davies Stephens Benalouane?
                      Sanchez Walcott Alli Sterling JWP
                      Kane Gabbi Jesus

                      GW37: Gabbi/Walcott > Ibra/Pedro

Honestly I should probably have wildcarded already.

Why are people so obsessed about maintaining or slightly bettering their current OR?

I see quite a few comments on here something like 'I am in the top 10k and don't really fancy that transfer because I want to safeguard my OR'.

If I was in the top 10k I would be looking at differentials and all sorts of things to get into the top 1k, and if I dropped to 18k then so be it.

Is maintaining a top 10k or 5k or whatever finish the be all and end all of Fantasy Football, rather than a mad final push for glory?

I am missing something or just being weird ?

In my experience different picks don't tend to work regularly. Basically because it assumes you know something everyone else has missed; which is unlikely. But was worth a try this season.

That smug feeling when you wildcarded in GW21 (due to a shocking collection of miscreants) and now read people's comments on here that WC for the DGWs isn't all it's cracked up to be.

It's impossible to measure how well you've done (or not) by playing your WC early. You may well have 100pts more in the bag through ditching rubbish, if that's what they were...maybe even more.

Oh definitely. It was essential for me at that time, and I knew what I was potentially giving up. The real positive for me (as someone without a WC) is that I will now play King, Zaha and Lukaku as SGW players in plum fixtures, without any temptation to switch them to players simply because they have a DGW.

I know what I'm like, I'd have gone with someone with a DGW (see Sterling still in my squad haha)
