The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Came up with this however I'm over budget (3.0) so want some help deciding who to downgrade

    Foster Elliot
    Kolasinac trippier lindelof mee Dawson
    Salah alli mkhi Willian Carroll
    Kane chicharito laca

definitely Kane. I know there is an extra 3.0 mil outlay but he is almost essential imo. If i was to go with a spurs mid i would prefer Eriksen over Alli

Kane much more clinical points wise but last season both were basically essentials

back to the original question of who to downgrade, i agree with 'The Wise Owl' below on the Alli to Zaha transfer. That will save 2.5 mil then i suggest downgrading Dawson to a 4.5 as you already own foster

How big a risk is going without Alli? Have Kane and KDB

    1. jmcclory123

Two sides of the coin. Alli was one of the most consistent midfielders in the game last season.
You could say that opponents will be more aware of his capabilities this season so he might get marked down a lot more, although I doubt it, due to his class. Tot don't have home games at WHL either. So it might not be that big of a loss.
For what it's worth I have Alli but not KDB at the minute. But I'm only in an early draft of my team.

Personally i would start with Lukaku over Rashford. If it looks like Mourinho is playing 3-5-2 or Rashford hits the ground running, it's easy to downgrade Lukaku. On the other hand, it Lukaku starts on fire, do you have a plan to bring him in?

    RMT please.
Tried to go for somewhat of a balance amongst the top teams

    Foster/Begovic

    Dawson/Cedric/Daniels/Mee/Yedlin

    KDB/Eriksen/Fabregas/Ramsey/Loftus-cheek

    Jesus/Lukaku/Chico

What worries me is 2 WBA and 2 Bourn in goals and DEF

It's solid. Keep an eye out on Cedric's likelihood of starting gw1. Also I would probably swap RLC to T Carroll as the latter is nailed on as a starter.

    RMT, 0.5 ITB:

    Foster - Myhill

    Lindelof - Trippier - Yoshida - Simpson - Lascelles

    KDB - Ramsey - Willian - Tadic - Carroll

    Kane - Lukaku - Chicharito

Ashley Fletcher potentially moving to Middlesbrough. That will be one 4.5m option for bench fodder gone.

True but there's so many good strikers this year three up top is a must. I have had bench fodder strikers before but only when there is 5 decent value mid to play like the season we all had fallani and michu

      1. Why is it a must?

Has the points chart been amended, without me noticing?

Is it now 5 points for a forward's goal? 🙂

Yes but there's just so many good options up front we only really had defoe and benteke mid price last season. We also seen alot of 8-8.5m midfield like alli and cout move to 9m+ so it's more difficult to get a good 5 or 4 and still get kane, Lukaku etc. I just think there more value in strikers this year

      Holgate -> Mee/Francis/naughton/Dun

Yeah I was unsure who would start between Holgate and Martina but they're the same price so no issue. Do you not think Holding will start? I thought Arsenal would be playing 3 at the back again and they only have Kos, Mustafi and Holding to play there. Monreal too I suppose. Bernardo is a tough one, I just don't think you spend £45m on a player to ease them in (although what's £45m these days?).

Until we know more about where he may end up it has to be Alexis. He is the price he is because of his record. This thing about Lacazette taking his central position does not rub with me. Whether he played central or wide and whoever was on the pitch made no difference last year.

  24. Eze Really?

I think the pricing in FPL is fairly accurate this year and at this point there are no glaring bargains to have at this point. There is potential like little pea, Gayle, King etc but in general, there are about 40 in which to make choices.
My view at this point apart from the bleeding obvious is avoid rotation and newbies in the system until we know more. We also have to wait until late to find who will be moving in or on.
Points per minute in relation to price seems to be a key indicator and outside the captaincy, this year points to wing backs.

If Austin is nailed I think I would rather him than chica for the first few GW, just need to wait and see the rest of pre season on how Austin does

You won't find a good striker at 4.5m

Got too many non players with the 4.0. Danilo won't start either. Get rid of Hart and Heaton to Foster and Myhill and Mkhi to Willian, this gives you 2.0 to upgrade 4.5 striker and 4.0 defenders

I've come up with a great squad but I'm 50m over budget.

Honestly both might be a good option. I'm waiting on the Super Cup to make decisions on United players apart from Lukaku

Two needed for 3-team mock draft (only 30 second picks) - will delete league afterwards:

    167830-44419

    Starts very soon at 10am

I might have found my team, your comments?

    Foster - Elliot
    Alonso - Trippier - McAuley - (Mee - Rangel)
    Alli - KDB - Willian - Redmond - (RLC)
    Kane - Firmino - Chicharito

Lukaku is tempting but I'm not sure how he will perform with Manu, Chicharito has proven his attacking threat at Leverkusen and in the PL before.
So I will reassess Redmond, Firmino and Chich after a few Gameweeks or what would you suggest?
