The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Seeing a lot of Mee in teams, before coming to this site I saw Clark of Newcastle as a better option. What's the thought process behind Mee please lads?

Reliable and consistent 4.5m last season. Burnley do OK for clean sheets at home.

How madness is it to go all in on City attack and ditch Tottenham completely?

What I consider is to go for Aguero + KDB instead of either Kane + KDB or Aguero + Alli.

Just fancy City to bang in the goals and I am getting to a point where I think it is worth the gamble.

I feel the same, I just think that Alli is too good value at 9.5. Leaving Kane at home though, I don't think I need him (famous last words).

I'm probably going Kompany, De Bruyne, Agüero, and Kane from the two.

Really tempted to ditch Kane in favour of Kane, just gut feeling that Aguero will start better.

For a draft league, over the course of the season who do we think will perform best?

    A) Vardy
    B) Chicharito
    C) Ihenacho

I currently own Vardy but I really rate Hernandez and Ihenacho seems to pretty much score every time he was on the pitch for City.

    Thanks

Sanchez has a very low rating in the pack this season I'll tell you why.

His new position pairs him up with Ozil who is 2.5m cheaper

Sanchez no longer plays striker with Lacazette in.

Sanchez has lost pens to Lacazette.

How can people claim he will be worth £12m? After losing all these key things, I too thought he would be worth it due to his explosive potential but the pack has enlightened me

When he scores a hat-trick that 1/8th of your squad value is probably delivering 40%+ of your points as he will likely be your captain.

It's much more than 1/8 of your available spending money, too. The cheapest possible team still costs 64m, and they are just bench fodder, so if you spend 12.5-4.5 on Kane that's 8m out of 36m actual spending money - over 22%!

Thoughts on Sandro at Everton? I think he might start over Rooney. He's a great player, reasonably priced and should get decent service.

Not seen anyone go for Morata in their RMTs so far? I think he's a great choice.

Both Sandro and Rooney are doubts because Koeman admitted yesterday that he's interested in Sigurdsson and a major replacement for Lukaku. Don't forget they also signed Klassen too.

Francis should start while Smith is out, but don't think Smith is too far away from returning.

I'd try and find the funds to upgrade Jrod to Austin (if he keeps starting and scoring in pre-season).

Not overly keen on Morata - think Batshuayi's form might see Morata be eased in maybe.

Can't see him getting minutes with the squad they have. Jesus starts and Kun should start really, leaving 2 attacking spaces, one of which Sane should take.

Sane and Sterling putting the frighteners on picking City players.

Sane, much touted as one if the most nailed picks for City, didn't start...and flappy hands Sterling reminding us he may be more than a nuisance to our best laid plans.

The real problem is that whilst those two are the topic of conversation after last night each week will provide yet more reminders that he hasn't got all those players just to sit and watch the first Xl....

      Yep, agree 100% , Wakey.

A 352 last night, wasn't it? Then Sterling playing through the middle in the second half.

Looks like their squad is well suited to a 352 actually. Only Sané and Sterling would need to adjust - and Sterling has been played through the middle before.
