Fantasy Premier League Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first of this summer’s pre-season Rate My Team Surgeries.

These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1. Each time one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team will put forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start the discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing our squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my balanced 3-4-3 selection.

My Team

Key Concerns

My lack of Manchester United or Chelsea defence is a concern as both sets of players are highly owned. It is the gaping Red Devils shaped hole in my back line that is my biggest issue as Chelsea’s fixtures are not great after their opener at home to Burnley, while Jose Mourinho’s troops early matches look superb. David De Gea or Eric Bailly are targets – although each will need funds to be freed up elsewhere.

De Gea could be a possibility as I’m not wholly convinced by my cheap as chips West Brom goalkeeper double up. Would I be better off going for the Spaniard, or indeed the save points that perhaps West Ham stopper Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes may offer early on?

The third striker spot is a tough one this season. Southampton’s Charlie Austin is there as a place holder currently and I’d be particularly keen to hear arguments for other strikers priced at 6.5 or below or even why I should invest more in this berth.

Nailed On Picks

Flexibility is driving my initial selection – and that for me is why Harry Kane is nailed on. Downgrading an injured or poorly performing Kane is easy, upgrading to the game’s most expensive striker could require surgery or an early wildcard. I’m also not convinced that Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen will match last season’s golden boot winner’s output.

Kevin De Bruyne looks the best attacking Manchester City option for me and is 0.5 cheaper than the only other one I’d consider – Gabriel Jesus. The Belgian looked particularly commanding in City’s 3-0 rout of Spurs in pre-season.

One of Nathan Ake or Charlie Daniels looks essential for me. Bournemouth defenders are among the best FPL resources due to their command of attacking points. Clean sheets are merely a nice extra for them. Both this pair appeal, but currently Ake has the edge as one of the best defenders last season for points per match. He was also 2016/17’s best player in terms of baseline bonus points.

As a Brighton fan I’ve got to have some representation and I believe defence is the main place to find it. With two assists full back Markus Suttner has impressed in pre-season and has even been fielded on the wing at times during matches. Lewis Dunk is another option here  – but his ill discipline concerns me. Also talk of his bonus potential hinges on clean sheets – which I’m not convinced my team will excel at in the top flight. Suttner’s attacking potential gives him the edge for me.

Romelu Lukaku is going nowhere with United’s fixtures and his strong pre-season form. Don’t even attempt to persuade me to ditch him.

The Punt

John Stones is my main punt. I originally had United’s Victor Lindeloff in this place but I’m concerned that he may be eased into Premier League action and miss the odd game at the start. City’s Stones could also be a rotation risk, hence the punt, but with wingbacks set to be deployed I can see him earning starts at first and if pre-season is anything to go by he could also bring me attacking returns. Already he has scored twice and assisted another goal during pre-season. If he can carry on that form his lowly 3.6% ownership and 5.5 price tag could rocket.

Formation

I’ve tried to construct a team around a four at the back formation but it just doesn’t sit right with this dullard. I favour the attacking prospects of midfielders and strikers over the dull ache of disappointment when a defender loses a clean sheet.

I’m currently favouring 3-4-3 but am willing to swap to 3-5-2 should five viable midfielders emerge and the third striker well dries up completely.

Probably don't need 2 4.5 def. perhaps downgrade one to a 4.0 filler and go Yoshida to Bertrand. Otherwise can't really find any fault, I like it.

I'm going strong with defenders, as for last year they where great (5:4:1)

    Foster Elliot
    Trippier Alonso Stones Valecia Hegazi
KDB Willian Redmond Walcott / Ince
    Lukaku(c) / Gayle / Austin

    Any thoughts?

I'm looking at alternating between 5-3-2 and 4-4-2 depending on fixtures. Not popular formations but I think there is better value with expensive defenders. I would be worried about doubling up on West Brom if you are going to go that route though.

Thanks, give it a taught yeah..

Better to try this is my second option:

      DDG
      Trippier Stones Cedric Hegazi
      KDB Willian Mkhitaryan
      Lukaku(c) Kane Austin

Elliot Rosenior Ince Lofus-Cheek (Maybe dowgrade Ince, to bring replacement for Hegazi - Dawson)

      I think this could work?

Any thought's on this? Is it too much of a risk having such a weak bench?

    Foster
    Yoshida, Kolasinac, Hefele
Salah, Coutinho, De Bruyne, Ward-Prowse, Ince
    Kane, Lukaku

    Bench: Elliott, Quaner, Rangel, Hunemeier

II think its okay. Coutinho may leave and i wouldn't double up on liverpool anyway, so a plan B may be necessary.

I like the bottle to go with Ince and i think JWP is a gem for this year.

I think Kane will start slow like previous 2 seasons, but he has high ownership and i may even be wrong.

I would only worry about the bench if you are not planning on using your wildcard early. I also have a weak bench but i am planning on wild-carding in week 3.

Ive tried to pick the best value attacking defenders I can find, get some goal form from preseason and have some cash (£2m) to buy into the right players in the first few weeks, with an eye on fixtures

    Gk Foster/Elliot
    Def Trippier/Kolasinac/Danilo/Yoshida/£4m
    Mid de Bruyne/Salah/Willian/Ince/Loftus-Cheek
    Fw Lukaku/Batshuai/Austin

Wembley, Chelsea and slow starts have put me off Spurs a bit in terms of value, but have cash to buy in. Still a bit risky?

Wouldn't have thought so but he will probably get a bit more pitch time while Morata settles in.

They both started the last game. Batshuai has the form. Definitely an early value pick, will need to look at Willian as well when Hazard gets back

Chelsea really have shit schedule on their first 7 games (except Burnley), better not to put so many Chelsea player in the squad. MU and Southampton have promising and easier schedule.

Seriously, I've seen a lot of teams with Austin lately. What indicates that he's a starter? He's in heavy competition with Gabbiadini, and even Long could stir things up, right?

Sure, I think he's got a great chance at starting the first game(s), but no goal and he's out in minute 59. 😉

A great option IF he's a certain starter, but do you guys really thinks he is? That's my main question, I guess.

      1. Bluesxman
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

Have you seen Austins goal scoring record? If he's fit then he starts, and he scores lots. He had a quick start but don't think Gabiadini has ever scored more than 10 in a season?

        1. DARE
          • 12 Years
          7 years, 1 month ago

I had him when he was in QPR, but since he came to Soto he's been a really shaky option in FPL. Gabbi scored a lot when he came in but cooled off pretty quickly....so, I guess you're right. Austin should be first choice, but I don't think he'll get a whole lot of time before he's subbed for Gabbi/Long, as long as they're not starting together (like the pre-season game).

          1. Bluesxman
            • 7 Years

Doesn't matter if he scores when he's on the pitch 😉 he was on fire at the star of last season, and he's scored a couple in preseason. Who else do you pick for that price? Gayle seems the only serious option, and I'm not convinced for toon in the prem

            1. DARE
              • 12 Years

The option is, no one at his price....or perhaps Chicarito. For now, I'm on two premium FWD:s and a cheap on the bench. Still think there's better option in MID at that price, but I'd definitely consider Austin if he's starting. That's why I asked.

For me, when Austin starts he's really an £8-9m forward until he gets injured. I don't think there is better value anywhere. It's just his fitness, and lack of options to sub in at that price when he gets injured. With the fixtures, he's nailed on for me

We have very similar teams Jonty.

At the moment I'm on :
    Foster Elliot
    Lindelöf Trippier Yedlin Dunk Francis
    KDB Mkhitaryan Willian Ramsey Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Austin

Haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I'm contemplating going Kane-less with this lot :
    Foster Elliot
    Lindelöf Trippier Kolasinac Dunk Francis
    Eriksen Salah Willian Ramsey Carroll
    Jesus Lukaku Austin

Okay, much as I hate having Liverpool players in the team, I've had to stick Coutinho in there, although if he leaves I could swap him for Pogba/Mkhi, which would save money and make me feel better.

    RMT!

    De Gea
    Trippier, Daniels, Yoshida
    Coutinho, Willian, Tadic, KDB
    Lukaku, Kane, Abraham
    (Elliot, Carroll, Hünemeier, Mee)

No Zaha anymore, as I'm worried about the sudden drop in value if he's a bit naff early doors and everyone chucks him. No Chelsea defenders just yet, as I'm not liking some of the early fixtures. Tadic/Redmond is the one causing me issues, as I like Southampton's fixtures but don't know which to plump for. I feel like this team gives me a fair bit of flexibility without making the bench total dross...

Jonty, have you gone off Defoe, as an option for the third striker slot?

For me, he was a similar option to Kane. Someone you could downgrade to a 6.5-7.0 forward, when a solid pick emerges.

I can't see any standouts in that bracket at the moment and I felt like I spent far too many transfers last season swapping out third strikers, when I could have just stuck with Defoe.
