Dugout Discussion – West Ham vs Huddersfield

The Gameweek concludes at the London Stadium where West Ham are treated to their first home game of the campaign against Huddersfield Town.

At the start of the season, this appeared to be a fixture which would have seen us back the Hammers’ assets for returns. Three games in and the outlook is very different.

The Terriers turn up undefeated and with no goals conceded. That form has seen the likes of goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and defender Zanka pick up 8.4% and 10.4% ownership respectively. Meanwhile, playmaker Aaron Mooy is backed by 12.9% having produced a goal and an assist to this point.

But West Ham have the best-supported player on show tonight.

Chicharito is part of 1.4 million squads and is backed by 159,000+ (3.3%) with the captaincy.

Significantly, he’ll be supported by Andy Carroll in the West Ham attack, in what appears to be a 3-5-2 set-up deployed by the under pressure Slaven Bilic.

Joe Hart is the next best owned West Ham asset in action, although 71% of his 500,000 owners have chosen to bench him ahead of tonight’s clash.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Could Chapelle win this thing?

Where was Crabtree around this time last year?

The best he could hope for is 2nd.

The winner has already been determined.

Chelsea don't have the easiest of upcoming fixtures:
      ARS/Sto/MANC/Pal

I'd possibly wait to bring him in after the Man City game if you think he's a season keeper.

Should I be worried about having no City attackers this week?

    Front 8:
Eriksen (SWA), Mkhi (EVE), Salah (BUR), Ritchie (STK) (Carroll)
Kane (SWA), Lukaku (EVE), Gabbi (cpl)

I have 2FT but with only 0.3m in the bank, I would need to get rid of a big hitter to say upgrade Gabbi to Jesus. With all of them having home fixtures, not worth getting rid of any or should I be desperately trying to get in a City attacker?

      No. However lukaku + gabbi > morata/laca/jesus + vardy/firmino could be a shrewd use of the 2fts

    Quick Poll.

    Is Coverage ....

    A) A myth that doesn't work?

    B) A valid strategy that yields a decent amount of points?

    1. TheTwelfthMan
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 11 days ago

      C) Bit of both. You have to consider which player/team you're covering with whom. Mkhitaryan/Pogba could perhaps cover United, Wijnaldum and Can will not cover Liverpool.

As soon as you specify a player then you prove coverage is a myth.

If coverage is a thing why cant I just get Matic to cover Pogba?

          For attacking players anyway.

Defenders is a slightly different story

        2. TheTwelfthMan
          • 7 Years
          7 years, 11 days ago

Yeah, I do believe the concept is a myth. I'd say you can cover players of similar/quality and prices through each other but not an 8.3m player with a 5.0m player. You can cover Eriksen with Alli to a good extent, but not with Dembele..

I had written a bit on this in pre-season, in fact. Taking the example of Arsenal and Liverpool, two of the common midfield minefields.

"Coutinho scored about 6.8 points per game last season. Mane racked up 6.3. Not a huge difference, between two players of similar calibre and prices. Now, let’s take Lallana and Wijnaldum. Lallana notched up 5.3 points per game, a number so high only because of the starring role he played in the absences of Mane/Coutinho. Wijnaldum, 4.5. This is where the drop off starts to become more significant. Another example from last season we can take this is that of Arsenal. Alexis Sanchez scored at 7.3 points per game. The same was 5.2 for Mesut Ozil and 4.0 for Aaron Ramsey. A significant drop-off as we jump down calibre and price brackets. So, the theory of “coverage” may not necessarily hold true for midfielders or forwards. It’s only if the players are similar in calibre."

As soon as a lower priced attacker is doing better or matching then its not cover anyway, you're just making the better player selection

Its like last year when i went Mkhi over Alli.

I wasnt covering United instead of doubling up on spurs, i just made a bad decision

If he's not doing better or matching but doing proportionately well (for the lack of better words), you could say he's 'covering'.

That was your perspective perhaps, but some do go for X over Y because they already have a similar player from X's team,

This is interesting. I don't take an extreme view in supporting or opposing coverage but I do think there is something there worth considering. As a notion, you can't rule it out completely.

Chalobah and Carrol would be my picks with RBC as an option also.

I think we can give the glad eye to both of Shaqiri and Ritchie as long term set piece hoggers this year so maybe.

Obvious wait on CL games.. but would you do this for -4?

Yoshida, Willian, Tadic ==> Davies, Countinho, 4.5 (Probably Chalobah).

      Will Coutinho even play?

I reckon he'll come off the bench against Sevilla. And a potential starter against Burnley especially with no Mane.
        Or I'm being too optimistic...

      Probably not worth the hit.

Just do Yoshida and Willian out for Bavies and a 6m mid?

is Alonso-Kolasinac-Davies (from gw6 onwards) too much cash in defence?

Depends on the rest of your team, could definitely pay off very well.

More debate less consensus would be good for the scoutcast.

It's tough being the only person to offer up an opposing view, however. There is a bit of a backlash if it goes wrong. This is why TriggerLips doesn't make his team public anymore,

      Such a tough decision.

Foster edges the stats ever so slightly.

    I'm ditching Lukaku.

Gonna go Kane - Morata - Firmino

Have, Kane - Lukaku - Hernandez

    It's obvious what wins.

Everyone should consider shifting Lukaku, having 3 big hitters in attack is essential this year unless playing a 352.

i prefer kane (c) morata firmino >>> kane kaku and any 7 or below striker..

Really think this team needs a shake up. Will hold tight until the games this week.

Willing to take a -4 on this. Any comments are very welcome:

Mane, Richarlison, Chicharito to Mahrez, Gross, Firmino

    Foster (Elliott)

    Alonso Cedric Jones (Lowe Mbemba)

    Pogba Mane Ramsey Richarlison (Carroll)

    Kane Lukaku Chicharito

    Play one:

    A. Mee (liv)
    B. Hegazi (WHU)
    C. Carroll (tot)
    D. Abrahams (tot)

Hegazi usually the obvious choice but unsure on whether he'll start
