Dugout Discussion – Everton vs Arsenal

Sunday’s action gets underway at Goodison Park as Everton and Arsenal go head-to-head in the 1.30pm kick-off.

The Gunners seek a fifth clean sheet in six as they attempt to bounce back from last week’s late capitulation at Watford.

Arsene Wenger recalls both Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey, who both missed out through injury at Vicarage Road.

Sitting in just 2% of FPL squads, Sanchez has suffered a hugely underwhelming start to the season and has mustered just two assists, though both have arrived in his last two appearances.

Mesut Ozil is handed a first start since Gameweek 5, while Alexandre Lacazette is the most captained player for Sunday’s early encounter – over 143,000 have handed the Frenchman the armband, though all four of his league strikes have arrived at the Emirates so far.

Everton’s disastrous start to the season has ensured that most of us have steered well clear of their main men.

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney remain their likeliest source of points, though Dominic Calvert-Lewin is worth monitoring as a budget frontman.

Priced at 5.0, the youngster starts for the fourth successive Gameweek and may yet prove a viable option if the Toffees can find their form ahead of clashes against Leicester, Watford, Palace, Southampton, West Ham and Huddersfield in the next six.

Best defender under 4.6 (if I want Salah) or 4.5 (if I want Coutinho) ?

Already have Ward, can't be a Newcastle def (have Eliot Mbemba and Joeslu which is annoying)

Duffy or Kiko would be my first choice. Yedlin is also in my thinking but you're maxed out as you said.

Yeah, Yedlin looks good, kicking myself for putting Mbemba in on wildcard now.

      GK: Ederson, Bravo
      LB: Mendy, ?????
      RB: Walker, Danilo
      CB: Kompany, Otamendi, Stones, Mangala
      DM: Fernandinho, Delph
      LM: ?????, Sane
      RM: Sterling, Bernardo
      CM: KDB, Silva, Gundogan, Toure
      FW: Aguero, Jesus

Almost a beautifully balanced squad with cover in all positions. Buy Sanchez and a backup LB and it is perfect.

Sticking by what I said in the summer.

Everton's problem's stem from that silly Jordan Pickford transfer. I said it then and I'll say it again. That money should have been spent on outfield players and in paticular a replacement for Lukaku.

I have no idea why they thought they were in that sort of a situation to sign him or why they even thought it was a priority.

Fantastic young keeper and no doubt but priorities.....priorities....

    Ha...commentator just said as much.

They had 2 of the worst keepers in the league in Robles and Stekelenburg. A new keeper was a priority. The money may have been too much but they needed a keeper.

Possibly the best young goalkeeping talent in the league, a good long term signing giving them a base at the back.
Lack of pace seems an obvious issue.

Yeah, I don't think his signing was a problem unless they spent too much on him which meant they had to compromise on the quality of signings elsewhere.

His two 'marquee' signings if you want to call them that of Rooney and Siggy are basically both offering much the same thing - a non pacey number 10. Having to play both then leaves them very short of pace and width.
As it stands the best thing that could happen for Koeman is that one of them gets injured or he grows a pair and only plays one. He's not playing Miralles, let Deulafael (?) go and still has Bolasie injured so time will tell.
In saying that, it may be a case of having to adjust to a new system

When you consider Begovic was 10 mill to Bournemouth then that was the sort of signing they needed.....+ 20mill.....

They have a wafer thin ageing squad....and that's a fact....30 mill for Pickford was a bit mad....

      1. Dr Dream
        • 12 Years

Yes he did. But in Everton's position a 30mill keeper wasn't a priority.mHe's fantastic but the trade off is an ageing Jagielka an ageing Williams no recognised striker....blah blah blah.

My comment in the summer was a 10mill keeper (that will still get you a quality stopper) and use the money elsewhere.

The fact that PPickford was their best signing is actually a minus for Koeman's management of the whole team..

The thing is, so many people where suggesting Everton could push top 4 this season but signings were sadly lacking.
I'm not sure why they failed to replace Lukaku - there may be another reason - but what that diddy Redknapp failed to remember was that he signed Sandro as his main striker and perhaps thought Rooney could play that role.
Bottom line for me is that Pickford was a great signing and I was surprised more clubs weren't in for him.
Don't forget. the money being asked for any player this summer was just plain ridiculous.

Moussa Dembele is the man they needed for striker although start of this season he hasn't been fit.

                Gnu just seeing this now.

Were they really talking silly money? Seems that it was around £20-£30m. I'm not sure how silly that is these days.

These Premier League clubs have that level of cash to spend on players.

I think when the time comes he will be a real hit in the Premier League now that he's developed as a player.

                    I think it was £30m.

If an offer was made of £30m Celtic couldn't turn that level of money down, it's huge.
