Captain Sensible – Gameweek 20

As time races toward tomorrow’s 11.30am deadline, it’s time for our usual pre-Gameweek members’ article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders for the upcoming round of fixtures.

We kick off by checking out the results of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll before analysing the key numbers for both the armband favourites and their respective teams.

Finally, we’ll delve into the data to suggest a couple of differential picks for those willing to take a punt.

The Captain Poll

The Boxing Day fixture list hands a host of big-hitters favourable Gameweek 20 opponents to boost their armband prospects.

Harry Kane currently sits at the summit with 37% of the votes cast, as he welcomes Southampton to Wembley Stadium on the back of his three-goal explosion at Burnley.

The Spurs frontman has undoubtedly toiled at his new temporary home, with six blanks in nine appearances. Nonetheless, Kane has improved of late, scoring in three of his last five Wembley fixtures, including two double-digit scores. Meanwhile, the Saints defences has just a single clean sheet from their last 14 Gameweeks,

Liverpool’s main men will also be among the key contenders for a home match with basement-dwellers Swansea.

Up against a defence that’s shipped ten goals in their last five road trips, Mohamed Salah (25%) is undoubtedly Kane’s main rival for the armband.

The Egyptian’s 10-point tally at Arsenal was his eighth double-figure score of the season and with a goal or assist in ten of the last 11 Gameweeks, he’s one of the most consistent and explosive picks around.

Both Roberto Firmino (1%) and Philippe Coutinho (2%) are also in fine fettle.

Over their last four league starts, Firmino has four goals and a pair of assists, while Coutinho has served up three goals and four assists for the in-form Reds’ attack.

Chelsea’s home encounter with Brighton brings both Eden Hazard (6%) and Alvaro Morata (6%) into contention.

The Belgian has struggled in recent weeks with Morata out through injury and suspension, tallying just a single assist in the last three fixtures.

Yet that’s in stark contrast to his showings alongside the Spaniard – Hazard has delivered three sets of 10+ points hauls in three of his last five starts with Chelsea’s summer signing on the teamsheet.

Morata has scored in two of his last three league outings at Stamford Bridge and emerged from the bench to score a midweek Carabao Cup winner at home to Bournemouth.

Man City’s trip to Newcastle on Wednesday night could prove a significant fixture for the captaincy race. Their big-hitters are largely overlooked in the Poll, yet they face a Magpies defence that have claimed just a single shut-out in 15 Gameweeks and have conceded at least twice in six of their previous eight outings.

Three goals and a trio of assists in as many appearances have made Raheem Sterling the favoured City pick and the number one transfer target in the Gameweek, though only 3% are considering him for the captaincy.

Sergio Aguero is also nominated by 3%. His tally of 16 points at home to Bournemouth in Gameweek 19 served a reminder that backing the City strikers can sometimes pay off if you’re prepared to run the risk of rotation.

David Silva, with three goals in his last two away appearances and, Kevin De Bruyne, with two sets of 10+ points hauls in the previous three, earn less than 1% backing for the St James’ Park encounter.

Man United will look to bounce back from their late collapse at Leicester as Burnley roll up to Old Trafford.

Only two sides have scored more goals at home than the Red Devils’ 22, which could be good news for differential picks, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba, who have both persuaded just 1% of voters.

Lukaku has found the net in two of the last three Gameweeks and is bound to be among the main captaincy picks on the back of his remaining 33% ownership.

Encouragingly, he’s scored three times in four home appearances alongside Pogba this term. The Frenchman, meanwhile, has bagged 26 points across that quartet of matches.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      A lot to think about.

I'm not a fan of sane, looked far less dangerous since teams have played very defensive.

How about sane to pogba and firm to morata?

Slight worry about mourinho imploding though and taking man u with him.

Cheers. On a WC and trying to work out balance of keeper and defence.

        ???? Elliot
        Otamendi Chelsea ????? 4.5 4.5

Not sure on DDG and ?, or Fabs / Pickford and Jones.

          6 years, 9 months ago

On a WC, I'd get in Adrian. Prepares you for the DGW and West Ham's fixtures are good thereafter.

Not tempted by double Chelsea defence?

How about Vertonghen? (Provided your 4.5s are nailed for GW21)

          1. how now brown cow
            • 10 Years
            6 years, 9 months ago

Think I'm going to wait till the DGW and pick a defender then.

Still worried Adrian is a flap away from Hart returning. Considered Hugo but he never seems to be packing big numbers.

Double Chelsea an option if I can squeeze them in.

Evening all. Hope you've had a great day.

The kid is in bed, the missus is watching Eastenders, it's time for FPL I think.

Any other Chris Smalling owners? Seems he's still just a doubt everywhere, not completely ruled out long term. Are you hanging on? I'm tempted to as I wanted to save a transfer this week with all the rotation. Only issue is I have Mee and Duffy as backups, and if any attackers miss out I'm stuck with Charlie Austin.

What are you doing if you own Smalling? Worth holding?

Getting out an injured player and a BGW player for arguably the best defender in the game and a heavy hitter striker with Brighton and Stoke at home in the next two is hardly maverick.

Spurs fan? OK, then it is maverick 😉

Captaining Kane just feels the right thing to do. Every time he scores it just makes me fall in love with him all over again. I think it's a case of club allegiance actually benefiting me when playing the game 🙂

That's a transfer I really don't want to have to make (but know I need to eventually) because the options without money in the bank are rubbish.

Looking at Wilson instead of Depoitre. Not really any great options though

        C. Promises points but poses less than 10 next week if Monreal + 1 is out.
        A. Provides more flexibility for weekend and DGW.
        D. Suggestion might be Elliot > Adrian as Fabianski less of rotation risk and Adrian is best West Ham DGW choice.

Word on the street is that he'll only play 1 of next 2. Dumping ASAP post deadline for Firm. Leaves me money for Kane in too.

Is Mata worth a punt for the next tomorrow or should I go with Richarliso

      Richarlison*

Tough. Mata not a s nailed as he should be but Rich is not doing great and Watford are in a slump.

There's a theory that Mata gets played in all the easy games. Look at his minutes and it actually makes sense. Mourinho obviously doesn't trust him when parking the bus (remember he got rid of him at Chelsea because he didn't help out in defence).

Make of it what you will. It's obviously risky but could pay off nicely.

A good observation. Great going forward but defensively he can be found out.

I'm sure they will be moving the bus out the stadium and will be attacking today Mata could get a return maximum couldn't care less if he track back and defend.

      I'm leaning towards Rich>Lingard -4

I asked about Rich>Mata last week and replies were Mata not nailed which is kind of true I guess

Totally fed up with Rich inability to hit target 2 in 26 shots in 761 mins at home

Yes, that's my thinking. Most of the chaps took a hit or made a transfer in my ML. Could be a nice bonus to have 2 FT coming Saturday.

Any Huddersfield fans about? Is Depoitre set to start on the bench as per recent home/away rotation with Mounie?

Im likley benching him anyway but would like to hear some thoughts.

    Courtois Elliot
    Azpi Smalling Mee Dunk Otamendi
    Lingard Sterling Salah Hazard Gray
    Kane Rooney Ladopo

    GW20 - Save
    GW21 - Use 1 FT(Transfer not planned)
GW 22 - Hazard & Azpi out for Arnautovic & Vertonghen with 2 FTs
GW 23 - Rooney out for Morata

What's a Ladapo and why is your back line so expensive to the detriment of the rest of your team and only expensive GK you get is DDG the rest all suck
