Monitor – Romelu Lukaku

After starting our series of members’ articles on Wildcard targets with a look at Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, our sights turn to another in-demand frontman.

With Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero currently nursing injuries, Romelu Lukaku’s recent resurgence has not gone unnoticed by Fantasy Premier League managers.

Three goals and a pair of assists in the last five Gameweeks, allied with a trio of strikes over four cup outings in the same timeframe, means that the Man United striker is the second most bought player in FPL ahead of Gameweek 32.

Following a barren autumn period, Lukaku seems to have stepped up his output following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez.

With two double Gameweeks anticipated for the Red Devils, can the Belgian claim a place in our frontlines for the run-in?

If you are planning on Wildcarding after this gameweek Jesus is a good punt otherwise too short term.

BOU, BUR, CRP at home and a trip to Huddersfield in next 4 gameweeks.

Deeney could be decent 3rd striker if DGWs are arranged as expected. Might outscore likes of Murray/Ayew 😮

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who have been the chip winner and losers so far?

Everyone will have their own bar for success but I think for many a very good return on a chip would be 20 extra points. Anything over that is fantastic, and anything below perhaps slightly disappointing.

For example, we already know that those who used their triple captain chip in Gameweek 22 on Harry Kane have lost out. An extra three points is all they received.

We also know that those who triple captained Salah in Gameweek 31 are winners.

In the top ten those that used their TC on the Egyptian winger then gained 29 extra points – and averaged a whopping 111 points in the Top 10K and 90 points among all players.

    https://fpldiscovery.wordpress.com/2018/03/17/17-18-gw31-final-results/#more-9986

We also know that the Free Hit for most was a success in Gameweek 31, as Ragabolly’s research shows.

    https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/03/18/metrics-was-the-free-hit-a-success/

Also, feel free to try and predict who will be the likely winners by the end of the season.

Will it be the Gameweek 35 Free Hitters, or those that use this chip in Gameweek 34 or 37?

Is 20 points a realistic expectation for the TC or BB chips?

And what of those Norwegian Eliteserien chips – Park the Bus (double defender points) and Striker rush (double forward points). Are these potentially more lucrative chips than the FPL ones?

Think FH35 will still be a winner. There are 3/4 very good fixtures and 11 players from those teams could really pay off. Those fixtures certainly appeal much more than GW31 and there could be huge scores.

But after seeing how the fixtures are going to fall most likely according to Ben Crellin I quite fancy his strategy of FH34, WC36, BB37.

Free hitting in GW34 and GW35 depends on how you are set up for the next couple of weeks, if you can get through GW32 and GW33 without any major damage I think FH in FH34, WC36, BB37 is the way to go, as the GW31 players in your team now should mean that you are well set for GW35 as well.

Agreed but I pressed the wildcard button on Saturday only. I do back that strategy of FH34, WC36 & BB37 (only if it’s with 6 fixtures).

But I still feel 3 Pool (wba), 3 Arsenal (WHU), 3 City (SWA) & 2 Everton (NEW) in GW35 could be a big prospect.

I WC'd on Saturday as well, to get rid of the weaker players I brought in for GW31. Time will tell if our strategy is correct, i'd be surprised if GW35 free hitters don't outscore non free hitters in that GW and I am also hopeful that BB in GW34 will outscore those BBing in GW37, where end of season rotation if likely to be more problematic.

If non free hitters load up on Arsenal, City & Pool they will fall short of dgw players. handpicking 3 City players in GW35 is a big advantage. No free hitter will also only probably only get one City player for now.

Really depends on what chips you hold and how you strategize. Im on my WC now with no TC left. I'm looking at FH'ing in 34 and having 2arse, 2city and 3 pool lined up for 35, with the ft i'll prob have 8 players from those teams.

Was FH a success? I didn't FH, got a few DGWers in and ended up with 90 points. Anyone who captained Salah and had a couple of other performers did ok and still have their FH

FH is the lesser success story to the TC in GWK 31 definitely.

In the top 10K the average for Free Hitters was 100 points - so they are 10 points up on you. An ok return but nowhere near the 29 extra that Salah triple captainers got.

Yeah Murray/Groß do look good options atleast till DGW34.

Are you planning BB37 if there are only 4 dgw fixtures in 34?
Think with 5 BB34 will still be possible.

Agreed, Swans assets become Brighton assets, but in reality their fixtures are so bad they have to get their points on the board early. I’ve never seen a run in like it.

As I’m wildcarding now, I’m looking a bit more long term, so whilst Swans assets can be benched intermittently (or in the case of Ayew, until he returns) whereas the Brighton assets need playing up until the double.

Guess it comes down to team structure, and to a lesser extent, 343 vs 352

I'm actually considering BB gwk 34.

Kane back and firing for GWK 37 looks good for the TC.

Plus if I load up with double double players for GWK 34 that'll ensure I have a better chance of fielding a strong XI for DGWK 37.

BB GWK 37 is tricky if wildcarding now....too much chance that I won't be able to get as near to a 15 as I'd hope (that includes Salah btw)

I’m bench boosting34 (pending fixtures) less rotation and good fixtures for s few all important cheap players.

Yup I agree fielding 15 players who play twice in GW37 is next to impossible and having the optimum players without wildcard also.
Plus Kane’s fixtures are made for TC that week.

My only worry is if there only 4 dgw fixtures in 34 BB will be tough that week. It’ll be still doable with 5 fixtures. Let’s hope the Arsenal & Swansea fixtures are shifted to 34!

      Biased post:

I think free hit 35 will be a winner over the 31 crowd.

Whilst 31 people may have lost out on a few points by stinking up their team with Walcott and co, if we are looking at the one week alone, the 20 point drop difference is good, but can be beaten.

In 35 where someone can boomerang their wildcard team to include a heavy hitting side, and then get their assets back looks to me a real winner on paper, especially for someone you without City assets.

        Written horribly.

TL:DR if the doubles fall as expected, the free hit to bring your wildcard team in and out looks so powerful when considering what assets other teams lose out on.

Trust yourself and not blame others.

Last year my rival won it on the last day as he forgot to triple captain Sanchez in an earlier double so had to settle on Harry Kane, who tore Leicester apart. Can still come good.

My FH last week earned me 36 points, but I am not happy going forward (just had to be done since I only had Firmino, Richarlison and Salah)

Though I must add, that this result in me using my TC in GW34, WC in GW36 and BB in GW37 - somewhat different to all of those still having all the chips (and it could still work out just fine).

My team is looking quiet good going into the next few weeks, and I just have to make transfers for the DGW, but not too many, since I can't FH in GW35 😉

Same as me, but you will be able to get a ‘proper’ bench to boost in 37 😉

Yeah. Just telling myself to have a maximum of 6 DGW players with a BGW in GW35 (Lloris, Christensen, Son, Vardy, Simpson & Lukaku as an example). You can have more DGW'ers, but not from those teams with a blank in GW35.

Then you can transfer out 2 and bench the rest while TC'ing.

              0 FT
              2.5 ITB

              Lloris - Speroni
              Otamendi - Moses - Mee - Lascelles - Simpson
              Salah - Sterling - B.Silva - Richarlison - James
              Vardy - Firmino - Aubemeyang

Think James and B.Silva needs to go this week or the next right?

I think we have to just wait for the fixtures and target players that have a double in 34 and a game in 35, plus Liverpool players. A -4 going into 35 will help, then ditch the lot in the WC in 36.

It was looking ok with Arsenal, City, Swansea, Burnley, WHU doubles in 34 etc ... but my smugness is likely to be slapped right across my face when the City and Arsenal doubles go to 37 😉

Yep I agree. Atleast City don't blank in GW35, and all the WC'ers pick D.Silva or none from City. Sterling and Otamendi could potentially do some damage right there.

There has to be more difference with the value of different chips. TC is worth one extra player (the best one though) and with BB you can get 4 extra players. 4 > 1 imo.

Depends on the quality of the player - yes we’ve had success stories but would you rather an extra single Salah, Kane or Aguero over 4 players from Swansea, Brighton, Burnley etc?

      3. Salarrivederci
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

I agree. When to use them also matters alot. I would feel bad getting 22 points from BB if I had 4x DGW'ers on the bench 😉

20+ on BB in a normal weeks seems good (5-6 pr. player), but in a DGW it would hurt my eyes 😉

15-18 points from TC should be good (even in a double GW). Those that did use it on Salah last week really did a great job.

WC is hard to judge in points since it combines alot of gameweeks to come.

    9. Hotdogs for Tea

The problem with the BB is that of all the WCs I have seen, most are not trying to maximise the boost and seem to think that having a playing bench of poor low scoring players is the way to go.

Of course you can’t load the bench with £££ with a WC in 32 for a BB in 34 and carry that cash onwards, the questions then arises ... why BB in 34 anyway ? But hey ho, this has been the FFS strategy that most are following 😉

I've enjoyed reading your GW31 strategy - and supported it at times against those who were belligerent enough to dismiss it even though I wasn't doing it myself. But isn't this the same argument that people were using against you when you were putting 'poor low scoring players' (as they put it) to make up your XI during the free hit? I'm not sure you can have it both ways.

In a way, yes, but they were the best players available in the teams playing in 31 and the most likely to get points, plus they were extra players too, in comparison to others without using the FH.

The BB WC teams I am seeing have the worst or cheapest players in teams and it is not getting the best from the chip.

I am waiting to see one WC team that has ptwo premium keepers, two 5.5 mill defenders and Arnie on the bench ... paid for by stepping down the value of one or two ‘premium’ players, but yet to see that 🙂

            • 15 Years

I'm still not sure that stacks up. You say the players you had in 31 were extra players in comparison to those who were not FHing - but the ones in GW34 are also extra players as they are part of a bench boost - so they pretty much cancel eachother out. And to your second point - having a stronger bench for bench boost is great - but you mention at the expense of the value of one or two premium players - so strategically you may end up better off, but equally have a chance of doing the same or worse by compromising on the premiums. It seems like it's all swings and roundabouts to me.

This 31 v 35 Free Hit argument has always seemed like much of a muchness to me - the winners will be the one who pick the best players at the time - so its how you do it which is the most important thing - when you do it may prove to be immaterial.

It probably is all just swings and roundabouts ad you say, but much more fun deciding what to do oneself rather than simply saying ‘if it is good enough for Jay, then it good enough for me’, or ‘lots of HOF are WCing now, so I will too’ or just blandly following the WC33, BB34, FH35, TC 37 route because the Scouts are doing it ... Virg was slated in his article for FH37 largely due to closed-mind thinking ... or maybe largely because it was him and not a HOF 😉

In my view, it is not really about the quality of teams in a GW for the FH, it is about the extra quality you can get in that GW with a FH over those that don’t have it.

I saw an upside in 31 that ‘could have been’ better than the upside in 35, but more importantly I became fed up with Walcott in my team from GW27 and decided that I wanted to enjoy my transfers going in to 31 and not buy duffers ... much more fun 🙂

I've still got all chips intact and am happy with the 100 points I scored without using a chip in GW31, whoever that ton has come at the expense of 4 red arrows in the previous 4 GW's when I was setting my team up for that blank GW. Not so good.

I'm just hoping I pick a decent option for TC in the double. That will ease the pain of not making the sensational gamble of TC Salah GW31.

I think the FH in 35 is going to be huge. Using 20 points over 1 week isn't the best way to measure success. Measuring it over the 2 weeks (34/35), where those with the FH do not need to worry about having GW35 players in there BB GW 34 team, is a better indication of its success.

I think you need to measure chip success over a longer period than that. Depending on your choosen chip strategy players have been setting their teams up for the blank and DGW period from GW28 (when the first blank fixtures were confirmed) of even before.

A season maybe! I think there are some variables you can't plan that early - even now we are not sure of the DGW fixtures, - injuries - Kane potentially missing the DGW could be huge. But my point was measuring your chip success over 1 week is not a good measure - we both agree on that.

You are definitely right. Your strategy is so right. 35 looks like a gw with spectacle. for those that free hit. 20 points from ben crellin analysis does not mean shit until the gw 35 free hitters launch their grenades. I think gw35 free hitters will hit the jackpot

It just means a different team in 34 to the template ? Arsenal, City, Pool, Arnie, Ayew, Burnley defender etc ... already planning to stack my bench with GW35 players

For example, I will be WCing in 36 so don’t need to get the players that have doubles in 34 and 37 and can pick those that have doubles in 34 and a game in 35 🙂

Every chance that most of those with TC left will be using it on Kane in GW37 if he's fit. So how much of a difference it's going to make will be interesting. Maybe it's those that go Mahrez or something different in GW37 that will gain the most.
be interesting to see (if Kane injury lingers) how many will be brave enough to TC Salah at home to Bournemouth. Side that gives up chances and Liverpool already beaten them 4-0 this season.
Kind of hope Kane isn't back in time for GW37 just to see a wide range of selections.
It's the failure of the chip system by allowing their use in DGWs that kind of weakens their effectiveness anyway.
BB score of 20 (even in DGW) would be decent. Last year BB got me just 16pts in a DGW score of 174. I've already had that bettered that BB in 3 GWs this season.

And those that don’t will probably bench boost, so it will be a static gw and everyone cancelling each other out ... except for the rogue Salah armband and 5 goal haul 😉

For what it's worth my big change would be only one wildcard and two triple captains (one to be used before Jan 1st).

As a rough guide, last season the top 12 in FPL averaged 20 extra points for the bench boost and 13 extra points for the triple captain. I think the figure for the triple captain is a tad lower than what could be expected, I'd say about 15 is a fair expectation.

Free hit is more difficult to assess, but I feel like about 30 points extra would be a good return.

I would prefer to have a triple cap chip that had to be used in the first half of the season like the first wildcard and one in the second.
At the moment the ranks are skewed in favour of people who used the chips early, only to see them fall backwards through the ranks in the last 6 weeks with all the chips used in the double gameweeks at the end.

If you FH in GW35, you can bench boost in DGW34 and TC in DGW37 (or visa versa), however if you FH in GW34 or GW37 it is unlikely that fixtures will allow you to also use the BB and TC chips in DGW's. This is a big factor in the favour of GW35 FH'ers IMO.

Got a buddy in my ML who made up a lot of ground on his FH in 31. 121pts prob gave him something like 35-40 pts more than the average. He didnt manage to make any grounds on the planners leading up to the gw though.

15-25 is realistic with the TC, prob a ceiling of 35pts
BB has a higher realistic expactation than the TC imo. As long as you opt for nailed benchplayers you should at the very least expect 4*2*2= 16pts, having players with favourable fixtures might give 1 or 2 cs and maybe you also luck out with a mid or striker with getting attacking returns. I Believe 20-30 points is realistic expectations. Vey unsure about the ceiling though.

FH is probably the most lucrative chip, but i find it very difficult to judge what to expect from it, because you prob need to judge it by how you benefit leading up to using it, the gw you use it, and the gws after. Those who use the FH in 34/37 will prob benefit more from the use of the chip, but those with all chips left is prob somewhat "locked" to 35 at this point.

The norwegian chips are more lucrative.
      Played in a DGW:
PTB would make it possible to have "captaincy" on 5 defender with 2 fixtures. Asumming some of the good teams with pricey defenders play, one can effectively captain 30million of funds.
SR: Prob equally as valuable as PTB. Makes it possible to Captain 3 striker with 2 fix and a value of 30-35Million depending on what teams have a DGW.

I got 37 extra points for my free hit = win

I got 3 extra points for my TC = fail

None of that will be relevant at the end of the season if the OR is poor.

A season lasts 38 weeks not just the 3 weeks you happened to use your chips, the only win (or loss) will be when you look at your rank.

was it "Individual" who came up with the floor and ceiling analogy?
my thoughts are the FHC is safer to use on a reduced fixture list
      (higher floor).
some people will nail this on a reduced fixture list that has a better prospect of players with better fixtures - 35 has both higher floor and higher ceiling.I think they will be the ones who benefit most.
I myself pi$$ed the chip away on a week of fixture swings in gwk10 - went for higher ceiling.
my fhc got me 17 pts more which I was disappointed about.
in summary unless you are a top manager (which I'm not) you can use the fhc effectively and nail it an any week but the safer option is to use it on reduced gameweeks as theirs less risk of messing it up.

Haha yeah, for Kane/Salah but applicable everywhere.

I still wish I used my TC on Salah, I mentioned it on the little web stream I did but never quite considered it seriously. Bah.

All 3 chips intact here; awaiting the fixtures before absolutely certain but BB 34 FH 35 TC 37 seems likely for me personally - standard plan

Key flashpoints are BB 34v37, TC 34/37/Other, as well as FH 31/35/random, so will be interesting to see who comes out ahead.

Bench Boost should have a minimum (floor) return: at leaat 16 points (4 playwrs on your bench playing 2x2 points matches).

So for Bench Boost, 20 points is really at the low end of success. I'd say at least 2 returns are needed ontop of appearance points, which puts it into at least 25, but realistically more like 30.

Triple Captain is different - your gain is simply the sum of a non-doubled captain score. So on a double that starts as 4 points, but given you'd hope for double digits per game for a captain then 20 is a reasonable success measure.

4 points per "extra" (benched) player per game - or a 2 and a 6. So a defender keeps one clean sheet (or none but an assist and a bonus point) out of the two. Or a forward scores once across two games. If you don't think that's achievable then why bother with the chip at all?

2nd WC probably still remains the most valuable chip to those who have it.
was surprised how many in top 10k had used it already (40%).
Still a need to focus on GWs32 & 33 before the DGWs start. Would hope to be picking up an extra 10-15pts per GW over those who have used WC already.
Assuming most of WCing will have at least 11 DGWers that could be worth at least 20pts in the 1 DGW over the 60% who will probably be having to take hits to get out a decent number of players

I used FH in GW31 and am very happy with it (less happy with my 3 point return from TC on Kane!). I had very good weeks in GW30 and GW31 and have made a lot of ground on rivals. I only have the BB left to play, but with some uncertainty still surrounding the fixtures, I don't need to rush it. I can wait and see what happens. I don't think the FH will be as valuable in GW35 as I'm going to have quite a few players featuring in it anyway. Man City will be a complete gamble for me from now on - I can see a lot of rotation and I don't back myself to predict Pep correctly, so I'm staying well clear!

With my WC activated this week to be rid of the GW31 players I accumulated over a few weeks I was happy to collect 99 points with no hits.
However, I decided to TC Kane in GW22 at the last minute, one of many last minute moves that have backfired on me this season.
For me it's all about getting as many quality 2x DGW players in my team now for 34 & 37.
I was thinking of keeping the FH chip for GW37 but think it will be best used in GW35 for me with my current WC team.

This obviously means it's going to be the best chip use in my not so humble opinion.
Worse (but only in hindsight!) was the 22 Kane TC.
FH 31 wasn't great, but also in hindsight. I think we were lucky: with a couple of more clean sheets they'd be 40 points ahead.
My bet is that GW35 FH will mean only picking second-best options in the GW34 BB, just to fit the GW37 doubles. I pick the best players and FH in 37.

For me I gained a net 34 points on the FH chip when used in GW 22. This is by comparing the points I got on FH to what I would have originally got. Sure I lost out part of that again the following week when my original team (that had neither Kane nor Son) was restored. Don't know if that counts though. I am happy with my decision so far.

I played my free hit during a short term injury/suspension crises and got 40 points more than my current one did. I was about the weekly average by over 30 and it kick started my season. Never regretted it. Although week 35 might change that

I have yet to see anyone in my mini league use a successful triple or bench boost. Those that have played it have all wasted it.

I would argue only successful times to have used it would have been on Salah in 31 and Aguero in 27

What does winning and losing with a chip look like? It's very natural to judge all decisions - not just use of chips - based on the outcome, but is that really rational? How do you (or even can you) distinguish someone who did something irrational, but lucked out from someone who made an excellent rational decision, but was unlucky this time around?

Was using TC in 31 on Salah rational? Sure, in hindsight it was a great decision, but isn't it more rational to always use TC in a double gameweek when the player picked has double the opportunities? Or is the fact the Salah doesn't have a DGW this season and will be by far the highest scoring player in the game make TC on Salah in a home game against weak opposition a good choice?

Is success with a measured by the number of points you actually get from it in any one season or is it using the chips in a way that, if done consistently, maximises the outcome over a number of seasons? Can we assess how much the patterns of different seasons are similar to each other? Yes we tend to get around 2 DGWs and 2 blanks near the end of a season, but the individual fixtures and the strength and position of the teams involved can be very different.

Not sure I have any answers to these questions, but find it fascinating!

      Used TC on Kane, but still at 44k even after many have TC’ed Salah and played their FH. Loads of mugs in ML’s are now chipless, so I expect to move up the ranks with the following strategy;

      GW32 Aubameyang in
      GW33 wildcard
      GW34 BB
      GW35 FH
      GW36 roll FT
      GW37 2 FTs

Last year in the run-in I went from 400k to a 109k finish!

My SV is 102.8, thats the only thing that matters with WC'ing.

Back to your question, Firmino is the better option over Vardy if you got him cheap, but Vardy + 1.0m for me gives me such a better balance and aggressive line up. This is subject to change and definitely may swing to 3-5-2 or a fully balanced "all formation" approach. I have 3 drafts ready for the fixture announcement and will decide accordingly.

The key of a WC is to have flexibility in my view and to make sure you can get any players you may want in weeks to come!

Oh wow thats high! Yeah its tough to push on up when you're at the 5k mark. Not considering Arsenal until they are out of EL. Auba the only one as he can't play EL. Thats my second rule about WC'ing for DGW's after having flexibility in your team to get any players you may need in the future.

    Still got my chips.
I noticed that the highest scorer this week (166) is from Egypt. It is a new team and he is ranked 490k in Egypt. So there is a massive following of the game from that country. I wonder who they're captaining every week?

    Cech Fabanski

    THis is perfect right?

(Except no Alonso and ropey 5th mid)

    DDG / Fab
    Christensen - Monreal - Lowton - Naughton - Morgan
    Salah - Son - Willian - Mahrez - King
    Vardy - Auba - Lukaku

Decided to go with King, instead of Ki or Kenedy made the rest of the team work, and hopefully outscore the difference in normal GW's to the 1 game the 5th mid will play during BB..

Hi there! My Wildcard is fairly settled, but i can't stop thinking about not including lukaku with 2 x DGW and good fixtures. I think united will finish the season strongly.

    DDG - Fabianski
    Alonso - Monreal - Chilwell - Fernandez - Lowton
    Salah - Willian - Son - Mahrez - Ki
    Firmino - Auba - Vardy

The only good alternative that includes lukaku is the following, please help me decide:

    A - Monreal - Ki - Son - Vardy
    B - Mustafi - King - Mkhi - Lukaku

Alternative B gives me lukaku, and despite amazing form Son has terrible fixtures and mkhi has awesome fixtures. The downside is that king will probably only give 4 p if SWA has DGW in GW 34. Thoughts?

After having started to wonder about Lukaku and his underlying stats "problem" in the article above, I checked fixtures. During 25-30 United has been playing against tot, CHE and LIV. Underlying stats not dropping against these sides would have been bigger news.

I can get this team out for BGW 35 1 hit every week in 32,33,and 35 -

    Ederson
    Keane - Shawcross - Mariappa
    Salah - Mane - Sterling - Walcott
    Aubameyang - Firmino - Deeney

    DDG - Mahrez - Fernandez - Hunemeier

I can then do the following -

    GW 34 - FH
    GW 36 - WC
    GW 37 - BB

This way I maximise both the DGWS I think. Will only do it if DGW 37 is the bigger BB friendly GW of course. No TC left also helps.

    Sound plan?

So -12 + whatever you lose every week against Wildcarders and you still have to carry Walcott, ShawX, Mariappa and Deeney every week?

      1. pundit of punts
        • 11 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

Both Mariappa and Deeney come in GW 33. DOn't have to carry them. Awesome fixtures for them in 33 and 35.

Should be Lowton in place of Shawcross actually.

Walcott and Keane will be benched this gw as I have a good team for this gw. Most will have 2 Everton in GW 35 anyway. GW 33 is a good fixture for Everton.

-12 over 3 weeks i.e. -4 each week should pay off over the cherry picked DGWers I get in 34 and 37 I feel.

Would only be without Lukaku over WCers. Would have Lukaku for DGW 34 again. Remember WCers won't have 3 Pool attackers over this period as well. I also fancy King+Stanislas to score big.
