How to Play FPL Draft – A Beginner’s Guide

Fantasy Premier League Draft is free to play and runs parallel with old-school FPL. If you’re already registered for the long-running FPL game, you can also immediately get involved with Draft.

Draft uses exactly the same scoring system as FPL with only one exception: there are no captains or vice-captains.

There are also no chips or Wildcards.

For the uninitiated or those needing a refresher on the rules, here’s a brief guide on how to play the game.

How to Play

Joining a League/The Draft

The first step is to create or join a league. Private leagues can include up to 16 managers, although the game itself states that eight is the recommended number. Eight, indeed, is the limit for public leagues (although four or six managers are also permitted) – you can enter those with random members of the FPL Draft community.

Like the traditional FPL game, leagues can run in the classic form or in the head-to-head format.

The key selling point of Draft is that each 15-man squad within a private/public league is unique, so only one team in each league can, for example, own Harry Kane or Mohamed Salah.

The draft system used is described as a “snake draft”, where managers take it in turns to select players until a squad is complete over 15 rounds. An example four-team league would follow this pattern at the draft pick stage:

Round 1: Team A, Team B, Team C, Team D
Round 2: Team D, Team C, Team B, Team A

Unlike the traditional FPL format, there are no budgets or player prices – so there is plenty of room for premium assets.

League administrators can set a draft date and time for private leagues, while public league drafts begin 30 minutes after the first team joins. Everything will need to be sorted before the Gameweek 1 deadline on August 11th, however.

Fantasy managers can build a watchlist before the draft, and this can act both as a shortlist of players you are coveting and also a list to govern your automatic picks should you be “away from keyboard”.

There is also the opportunity to take part in a mock draft, allowing you to experience the draft process before doing one for real.

Transactions

Transfers, or “transactions” as they are known in Draft, are made in three ways: Fantasy managers can make “waiver requests”, dip into the free agent pool or trade with another manager in their mini-league.

After the draft has completed, you can trade players with other managers in your league – depending on how it has been configured. Your league administrator can allow no trades, all trades unvetted or trades that need administrator/other managers’ approval.

The waivers, meanwhile, operate like transfer requests from managers who propose both the unattached player they want and the player being swapped out. A weekly deadline is set for waivers to take place and, when that is reached, they operate a lot like the draft.

Indeed, before the season starts, managers get their first waiver requests granted in the reverse order of the draft. So if you went last in the draft in Round 1, you will be the first to get your waiver request processed. However, once you have succeeded with a waiver, you then go to the back of the queue.

Things change when the season starts, with the waivers granted in reverse order of the league table. So if you’re bottom of your private/public league, your waiver will be granted first to give you the best opportunity to strengthen your team.

Inter-manager trade offers can be made each Gameweek until the waiver deadline passes. If trades in your league require approval, then the trade deadline will be 24 hours before the waiver deadline.

Players that are free agents become available once all the waiver requests and manager trades are made. These consist of players remaining in the pool and players that were released by other managers in the previous Gameweek.

Managers can draw from the free agent pool 24 hours before the Gameweek deadline and it’s on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fantasy Premier League have also published an FAQ and a list of rules on the Draft game, should further help be needed.

    Sorry repost!

    Subasic Sommer(x)
    Meunier Trippier Godin Granqvist ???
    Coutinho Modric Bentancur Quintero(x) ???
    Kane Hazard Griezmann

Have 12 mil to spend on 1 defender and 1 midfielder. Best combination?

Was thinking perhaps Lovren/Golovin or TSilva/Claesson or Varane/Clarsson? Any other ideas?

  6. Re-Classified Players

The start of a new FPL season brings us fresh position changes. Although there was nothing as dramatic as Salah becoming a Forward, I’ve had a look at how the newly re-classified players would have performed in 17/18, if they’d been listed by their 18/19 positions.

To do this, I re-calculated points totals for the affected players, accounting for positional differences in points given for goals, clean sheets, goals conceded and bonus. I looked at the impact on bonus points on a game-by-game basis, so these should be exact figures.

    Marko Arnautovic (MID > FWD)
    -11 Goal Points
    -7 Clean Sheet Points
    +9 Bonus Points

    144 Points (4.6 PPG) > 135 Points (4.4 PPG)

    Wilfried Zaha (MID > FWD)
    -9 Goal Points
    -10 Clean Sheet Points
    +7 Bonus Points

136 Points (4.7 Points Per Game or PPG) > 124 Points (4.3 PPG)

    Arthur Masuaku (DEF > MID)
    -18 Clean Sheet Points
    -2 Bonus Points
    +9 Goals Conceded Points

    68 Points (2.5 PPG) > 57 Points (2.1 PPG)

    James Milner (DEF > MID)
    -18 Clean Sheet Points
    -3 Bonus Points
    +7 Goals Conceded Points

    77 Points (2.4 PPG) > 63 Points (2.0 PPG)

    Fabian Delph (MID > DEF)
    +1 Goal Point
    +18 Clean Sheet Points
    +13 Bonus Points
    -3 Goals Conceded Points

    55 Points (2.5 PPG) > 84 Points (3.8 PPG)

Delph would have picked up bonus in each of the 6 matches where he played 60+ minutes and City kept a CS – he actually had the best minutes per Baseline BPS of any FPL player that made 10 or more starts last season.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka (MID > DEF)
    +6 Clean Sheet Points
    +2 Bonus Points
    -4 Goals Conceded Points

    15 Points (2.1 PPG > 2.7 PPG)

    Ashley Young (MID > DEF)
    +2 Goal Points
    +27 Clean Sheet Points
    +7 Bonus Points
    -8 Goals Conceded Points

    98 Points (3.3 PPG) > 126 Points (4.2 PPG)

N.B. Fousseini Diabate has also been re-classified as a Midfielder instead of a Forward, but would have still scored 21 Points last season if the change were made a year earlier.

United always seem to start the season well, we can look as close as the beginning of 17/18 as an example (16 goals in first 5 PL games). Also easy to replace Sanchez with whoever looks to be the form midfielder bar Salah should it backfire.

If you're even considering spending over 10 million on a Man United attacker then there's something seriously wrong with your thought process.

            Hard to say.
Tomkins and PvA had a very similar PPM last season (Tomkins at 3.5, PvA at 3.4) even though Tomkins played 204 more mins. Tomkins got more bonus points (9 vs 7) too.
PvA is likelier to score / assist but Tomkins is also a goal threat, especially from corners.
It really depends on how you are going to use that extra 1M but IMO sticking with Tomkins isn't the worst idea.

I'd probably upgrade my 7.5m mid (Sigurdsson or Ramsey) to David Silva. Already have Sane and Aguero though.

Agreed. If he looks nailed under the new manager think he could do really well this season. Also fancy PVA to get some attacking returns.

                    Cheers for the feedback.

PvA always waits until the end of the season to get his attacking returns.

Tomkins is a fairly consistent threat at set pieces throughout.

Before we actually look into best players by price bracket, what do you think is the best price structure for a 3-5-2?

Am on something directionally like this:
            4.5 + 4.5 (or 5+4)
            6.5 + 5.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 4.5
            9.5 + 9.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5
            11.0 + 11.0 + 4.5

Ideally you want your benched attacker to be a starter. Are there any starting 4.5m strikers?

That seems a decent structure for a 3-5-2 though 🙂

No 4.5 starting forward... But that would be my only non bench starter...

To be honest, you have to look at the players. Salah is 13.0, Kane is 12.5. If you want both, or even one of them, you need to make serious downgrades elsewhere.

                Thanks!

Yes totally agree, but I think I'll pass on salah as I have a theory that he will be more blocked than this season, as he was end of last season... If I am proved wrong then William WC early season

Kane for me would come in later and 11+11 could become 12.5+9.5, ie plus firmino, but that's for September

For people looking for a rotating defence over the first 5 weeks you can use Tomkins, Keane, Tarkowski, Morrison and Dunk for:

            ful, sou, wlv
            WAT, SOU, NEW
            ful, hud, wat
            SOU, HUD, FUL
            hud, sou, wlv

I've learnt my lesson with doing this in the past. In a few weeks you'll hate your backline and have no FTs to spare to sort it out. Injuries and rotation is rife in this sport, and when it happens you'll want solid defenders to hold the line while you find a FT.

Also, there always seems to be huge bandwagons around the 5.5m mark, that I end up getting priced out of by late season.

If you can pull it off, fair play, but it's very high risk.

A lot of the Arsenal players look good value but we have no idea how Emery will line up. Could be Aubameyang through the middle and Laca on the bench.

Why are so few Palace players listed in the game?

Not exactly sure who all are missing - but Souare, Ward and Wickham come directly to my mind.

My guess is that this is happening a lot so as to reduce the amount of definite non playing options, where the price will remain the same and not be prone to price drops. I’ve seen someone mention Fulham are the same.
This of course could be total nonsense on my part.
