How Foster and Watford can form part of defensive rotation in 2018/19

Ben Foster could help Watford form part of an effective defensive rotation this season after his move from West Bromwich Albion.

The data would suggest he stands to bring improvements to the Hornets’ back-line, compared to previous number one Heurelho Gomes.

We’ve run the rule over Foster to see what his Fantasy Premier League prospects are this season.

THE HISTORY

Ben Foster finally called time on a six-year spell at West Bromwich Albion this summer after the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League. Having proved a fashionable asset for Fantasy football in recent years, his popularity was damaged last season by the struggles of his club, who finished bottom of the league.

However, the 123 FPL points Foster amassed in 2017/18 turned out to be the third-best score of his career. In fact, the ten clean sheets he helped keep was his second highest tally in the Premier League; only in 2014/15 did he register more shut-outs. The 101 saves he registered was also in keeping with expectations.

The main blot statistically on his final season with West Brom was the fact that he ranked bottom of the division for expected goals prevented, with -8.80.

Foster’s FPL pedigree goes back a long way, though. He first made a name for himself by making 178 saves and recording 153 Fantasy points in 2010/11 with Birmingham City.

Since then he has made over 100 saves in five of the last eight campaigns and was only below that number between 2013/14 and 2016/17 as he struggled with injury and team selection.

PROSPECTS

Foster certainly has what it takes to better Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) in the Watford net and help the Hornets be a source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

There is a decent foundation in place already at Vicarage Road as manager Javi Gracia targeted defence as an area in need of improvement after he took over from Marco Silva in January.

In the first 24 Gameweeks of 2017/18 Watford ranked 18th in the division for clean sheets and only Stoke City (50) had conceded more goals than them (44).

Between Gracia’s first match in Gameweek 25 and the end of the campaign the Hornets were ninth-best for clean sheets and 12th for goals conceded. In fact, only Man City (75) and Liverpool (97) allowed fewer shots on goal than Watford (130) over that same period.

They also ranked fifth-best for shots on target allowed (49) and seventh for big chances conceded (27).

If Watford begin 2018/19 in similar form then Foster is likely to perform better than Gomes.

The Brazilian only played one match under Gracia because of injury, but loanee Orestis Karnezis is no longer at the club and therefore unavailable for comparison.

Gomes’ spell in the team was under Silva, when Watford weren’t as assured at the back. Crucially, despite facing more shots on target per game last season, he still made fewer saves than Foster did per match.

The former West Brom man also out-performed Gomes for goals conceded per game as well as clean sheets too.

With that in mind, the hope is that Watford may be the source of more clean sheets in 2018/19 than they were last season.

The Hornets do have some tricky fixtures early on, with Tottenham and Manchester United among their first six matches.

However, Foster could be rotated with fellow £4.5m goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to give managers this run over the first six Gameweeks: Brighton (H), Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (H), Wolves (H), Everton (A), Fulham (A).

Naby keita is tempting. May sell robertson and pick him with salah and firmino
There are so many good defenders but hardly can find a good midfielder in that range

Keita will do well to score as much as Pogba did last year, he’s 1.0 cheaper, but I think there’s much better options in & around that price. Who knows though maybe Keita will be a points machine

Tougher on paper this year, both teams will be feeling the long Summer as both had loads away at the WC, Arsenal will be fresh and with a good pre season behind them.

Ramsey scored against Chelsea in a Cup Final, he'll not fear them.

This is how my current squad would set up if season started tomorrow. A lot of course will happen over next month but how is it looking for now?

I am not keen on king. I notice wilson scored and assisted as much with much less minutes and off form last year. If you are prepared to punt on Bou forward then for me wilson seems the better option.

The other issue which applies to my team also is the fitness of Salah. Will monitor this closely.

Tosun will need monitoring also. Team looks sound otherwise. Defence particularly strong.

Mu rival currently has triple France defence. I've only got Pavard so I'll be matching that at least. Obviously he has 5 transfers to play with but there's no chance he will loose French players i currently don't have so i can at least cancel them out.

Plenty of points in this playoff i believe which I'm going to take a punt on too

If Bailly is nailed, he's a better option than PVA right?

I think PVA just looks nice on paper because of his goal threat. Even with his 5 goals last season, Jones still out-scored him by 20 points with 200 less minutes.

Probably but will we really know he's nailed until the season starts? We didn't know Jones was going to be nailed at the start last year until we saw him get a run of games. There's a lot of competition at centre back for United.

    So here's where I'm at:

    Ederson
    4.0

    Robertson
    Azpilicueta
    Coleman
    Van Aanholt
    Ward

    Salah
    Mahrez
    Jota
    Cairney
    Pritchard

    Firmino
    Tosun
    Zaha

I did have Arnie in there (feel like I should stay loyal to him as he almost single-handedly pushed me over the line to win my mini-leagues towards the back end of last season!), but Zaha has the nicer games to start with.
Also went Azpi over Alonso as unsure on Alonso's role under the new manager. Azpi should be nailed every week. May bring Douglas in for Ward around GW4 if he's looking good.
I really like Pritchard but looking at the first 8 games he'll probably only start 2 or 3 for me. Good sub to have.

In future please don't format your team like that again 😆

    Ederson,
    Coleman, Bailly, Robertson
    Ramsey, Mahrez, Sanchez, Salah, Siggy
    Zaha, Austin

    4.0 - Cedric, Bednarek, 4.5

Quite happy with this but not sure I want to start with Ramsey. Best replacement until GW3?

He's not even been on my radar but love the shout. Probably is the best option at that price thinking about it.

Thought of him earlier too. Could be a great pick if he stays at utd and we dont manage to bring in a LW

Should get some starts with Lukaku, Rashford and Lingard going deep in the World Cup.

Arsenal could do ok in their first 2 games so maybe just get Ramsey now.

    Which do you prefer?

    A. Ramsey & Mahrez
    B. Mky & Sane

    Thanks

Too soon to say. Prefer Sane to Mahrez but need to see if Mkhi looks like a starter under Emery. Not sure how he's going to fit Auba, Laca, Ozil, Ramsey and Mkhi in the same lineup.

Lots of love for Wolves assets but their fixtures arent great are they? Think I'll wait and see with them.

That's fine because it could be even Caveleiro who explodes who has very low ownership. There isn't one method of scoring points, although you wouldn't think that with Salah's ownership!

How is this looking? Is Jota as good as 4 minute youtube videos are making me think?

    Fabianski | Foster
    Mendy | Robertson | Tomkins | Cedric | Daniels
    Salah | Mahrez | Willian | Jota | Masuaku
    Aubameyang | Firmino | Kamara

Zaha, Jota, arnie, martial. Could make money from swapping out robbo and Coleman for cheaper options

Kenedy is an interesting pick and could be great this season, but his early fixtures are awful. Really good otherwise.

    First RMT

    Ederson (Boruc)

    Sanchez Mahrez Ramsey Jota (Chalobah)
    Tosun Firmino Aguero

Still have 0.5 mill, where should it go?

Best two 5.0 mids to rotate for last mid spot?

Or would you prefer Deulofeu + 4.5, say

Just don´t rotate. You´ll be sorry at some point when you have say 2 free and still find yourself .5 short

      Two that spring to mind

      Hughes McArthur (if nailed)
      Deulofeu Puncheon (if almost nailed)

Since when did king become KING.

Correct me if I am wrong. There seems a lot of love for the above guy but if statistics (basic assist and goals scored) are correct then Wilson scored as many goals and got as many assists with less minutes on an off season.

So therefore Wilson beats King hands down. Have i missed something!! I must have cause king is mentioned a lot more than wilson

Wilson had a typical wilson season last year.
Many believe King to be more reliable player week-in week-out as opposed to bang2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2bang-Wilson. Most have him as more nailed. The posibilty of pens attracts aswell.
