Another Sessegnon warning as Brady recovery drags on

Burnley continue to struggle with injury this pre-season as Robbie Brady suffered another setback in his recovery.

His expected absence should make it easier to predict who will start on the wings for them in Gameweek 1 but questions still remain over their goalkeeper situation.

Elsewhere, there was another stern warning for those invested in Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m).

ATLETICO BILBAO 1-3 FULHAM | FULHAM 0-0 FIORENTINA

  • Goals: Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m), Aboubakar Kamara (£4.5m), own-goal
  • Assists: Jean Michaël Seri (£5.5m), Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m)

The trio of goals scored against Atletico Bilbao ended a run of three goalless matches for Fulham as Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) finally involved himself in attacking returns this summer. It was his cross that Yeray Álvarez directed into his own net towards the end of the first of two Cup of Traditions matches. However, there was further confirmation that Sessegnon offers much less in terms of attacking potential when playing at left-back. He was used there in the second match of the afternoon, for the second time in pre-season, and had little influence on the game. The 12.1 percent of Fantasy managers who currently own the 18-year-old should make themselves aware of that and keep an eye on new signing Maxime Le Marchand (£4.5m) – any injury or suspension to him could force Sessegnon back into defence this season.

These two matches saw new signing Fabri (£4.5m) make his first appearances in goal, and give us a chance to see whether he could take the number one jersey from Marcus Bettinelli (£4.5m) this season. Of particular note was the former Besiktas man’s distribution, able to easily find his full-backs and get play moving well from the back. According to local press, this is an area that Bettinelli has struggled with in the past which could hand the advantage to Fabri, who also has experience of playing Champions League football too.

In front of him in the first match, we saw Le Marchand, Tim Ream (£4.5m), Denis Odoi (£4.5m) and Cyrus Christie (£4.5m) line up as the back-four for the third time in pre-season. No other combination has been used as often by Slaviša Jokanović during the summer, suggesting – barring any further recruitment – they will start at Craven Cottage when Crystal Palace come to visit on August 11.

Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m) has done his chances of featuring from the beginning in that match no harm after a decent display in these friendlies. The DR Congo international faces competition for a start on the flanks of the front-three from Sessegnon and Andre Schürrle (£6.0m), who made his first appearance for Fulham against Fiorentina, but is currently the club’s top-scorer in pre-season and with more minutes in the bank than Schürrle. However, the German World Cup winner reportedly impressed in his 45-minute spell in the Cup of Traditions final and, as the new signing, is expected to also be in with a strong shout of starting Gameweek 1.

FULHAM XI vs BILBAO (4-3-3): Fabri; Le Marchand, Odoi, Ream, Christie; Johansen, Seri, Cairney; Sessegnon, Kamara, Kebano.

FULHAM XI vs FIORENTINA (4-3-3): Fabri; Sessegnon, Odoi, Ream, Christie; McDonald, Johansen, Seri; Kebano, Kamara, Schürrle.

BURNLEY 0-0 MONTPELIER

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Robbie Brady’s (£5.5m) recovery from injury hit a setback in Burnley’s latest pre-season match, a 0-0 draw with Montpelier. The former Hull City man has been on his way back from a knee injury sustained in December but was forced off with a hamstring problem just before half-time on Sunday. Manager Sean Dyche has sought to ease fears that Brady will be on the sidelines for some time, which should be of interest to Fantasy managers aware of the Irishman’s potential this season.

“It was a very minor thing in his hamstring so we took him off immediately. He’s been out for a while, so we don’t want any secondary injuries if we can help it.” – Sean Dyche

Regardless of how much of a setback this proves to be for Brady, his withdrawal strengthens the case for investment in either Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.om) or Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) – the two wingers who started against Aberdeen last week. The Icelandic international has one goal to his name in pre-season and is the key man for set-pieces while Lennon has found the net twice so far this summer and is £1.0m cheaper.

Burnley are still waiting on an update on Nick Pope’s (£5.0m) dislocated shoulder, with him having seen a specialist this week. With Tom Heaton (£5.0m) carrying a calf strain, the prospects of the Clarets’ defence are somewhat up in the air. There is no return date set for either him or Pope yet with Anders Lindegaard the most likely stand-in so far. It may be difficult to invest in £5.0m defenders like James Tarkowski or Ben Mee if there are doubts over the man between the sticks.

“The shoulder joint definitely came out and (went) back in so it just depends on the damage along the way. We’ll see what the specialist says tomorrow. When you look at the incident it was a freaky incident. I’ve seen the stills and it is just a freak moment in a game. It went back in pretty quick, so it depends on the disruption in the shoulder. We’ll find out more tomorrow.” – Sean Dyche

Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m) was the only member of the starting XI that faced Aberdeen to feature from the beginning in this match, as Dyche largely used either second-string options or players on their return from injury problems. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was one of the latter, his involvement against Montpelier the first since the opening match of pre-season. The former Plymouth Argyle striker managed 60 minutes before being replaced by Nakhi Wells (£4.5m). Sam Vokes (£5.5m) started alongside him after coming off the bench to equalise for Burnley at Pittodrie.

BURNLEY XI (4-4-2): Legzdins; Taylor, Dunne, Long, Bardsley; Brady (McNeil 42’), Hendrick (Goodridge 60’), O’Neill, Walters; Barnes (Wells 60’), Vokes (Agyei 70’).

David Silva and KDB started all 7 of Citys first games last season. Aguero started 5, and missed 1 due to injury.

If we look at Man Citys first 7 games, bar Arsenal, they play the 6 promoted sides from the previous 2 seasons, 4 at home.

Sane is surely nailed and may reward us early, he did bag at the emirates last season. 3 City essential early on i feel. Aguero, Sane/DSilva and Mendy i reckon.

Sane isn't surely nailed. Pep has come out and said he is unfit and not ready to play. He hasn't even played a pre season match yet, so he 100% isn't 'nailed'!

Would love either of the Silva’s to be nailed. So cheap & cheerful.

I think it has to be KDB long term though, him & either one of the Silva’s and/or Mahrez Sané.

So that narrows it down to about 5 lol

Long term I think KdB and a def is what I'll settle on.

For the early GWs I'll decide after the CS - sneaky feeling Bilva will get the first couple.

Best memory was that December gameweek in 2010/11 when loads of matches were called off except Everton's.

There was no vice captain rule, so Baines was selected as my captain because he was the 'most in form' or something like that. There was another more popular pick that failed badly.

Baines scored. I was happy. Everyone else was pissed!

I once captained him when he scored twice. Of course, it led to many other funky captain decisions that led to terrible ranks until last few seasons!

If he had played the full season people would be falling over themselves to include him. 10 goals and 20 bonus points in half a season is incredible value. It doesn't matter that Burnley don't score many, it only matters that when they do score, Wood is constantly involved and eats up the 3 bonus points every time he puts the ball in the net. Possibly the best value attacking player in the game this season.

He's got a great recent record. Burnley don't score much so you'd never captain him, but he's the perfect 3rd striker if you play a front 3.

From what I know Sari expects a lot from his wide men so you might well be right about his legs.

Even with the chances that Luiz is nailed would you go with Azpi ahead of him?

If he's rb then I guess he could add more assists to his BPS and be a bargain at 6.5.

Azpi is an absolute bargain. He's just not exciting. His back-to-back fpl points totals are incredible compared to players of similar price across all positions. The value there is reliable and outstanding.

He may even produce more attacking returns from a right-back role this season, especially with crosses to Morata and Giroud coming from more advanced positions, more frequently.

Nailed on, guaranteed 15+ clean sheets, some attacking returns, BPS magnet, good fixtures, and price comparable to the likes of total punts in Jota, Sessegnon, Maddison who will all be lucky to crack 140 points.

    Hey Guys,

This is my first attempt at a team this season. Just assembled the team an hour ago and would like honest opinions.

    Ryan

    Lascelles / Daniels / Doherty

    Salah / Eriksen / Lingard / D. Silva

    Zaha / Lacacette / Arnautovic

Subs: Speroni / F. Anderson / Zanka / Wan Bissaka

    0.5 ITB

The Rate My Team accumulator does not seem to fancy Lingard for points this season despite a good last season and a decent world cup on top of that??

Is Firmino overrated? He gets a lot of love, but is that partly because he passes the eye test and he plays for Liverpool? Does his output and value actually justify 9.5m given he's not quite 'premium' or reliable enough to captain?

Here are some relevant and interesting numbers from last season:
        1. Firmino had the same points per match (PPM) as Alli, yet the former was hailed for a great season and the latter heavily criticised for a poor one. Alli is also now cheaper.
        2. Firmino's best ever FPL season points total is 44 points lower than Alli's best and 37 points lower than Eriksen's best (two similarly priced attacking players at a big club with much lower ownership).
        3. Firmino's 4.9 PPM was only slightly better than Zaha (4.7), Arnie (4.6) and Wood (4.3) - is that enough to justify a sizeable price difference? Keeping in mind Zaha and Arnie only played part of the season as strikers where most of their points were gained.
        4. 13 players (all positions) had an equal or higher PPM & a lower or equal price than Firmino's (current) price - including Mane (5.1 PPM).
        5. Looking at both the 17/18 season and the 16/17 seasons combined, Firmino has scored 16 points more than Azpilicueta and 19 points more than Alonso in total. When people say "there's value in defence" this is surely an example of that.

PPM is not always the best metric, but in some cases it is more valid than others. Firmino doesn't make a lot of cameos, so it's a reasonable way of assigning his true average match output. He's not getting punished statistically for a string of 5-minute 1-pointers the way, for example, Bernardo Silva would be.

The raw stats don't really show Firmino to be amazing 'value', so why is he so popular?

I was a dyed in the wool Firmino fan and had him most of last year but having compared his stats to Mane for last season Mane is a better pick with extra goal and cleansheet points.

Firmino was cheaper last year than Mane and Salah at the start which made him a good pick then but a bit over-priced now i think.

I think firm could be underrated. 180 points the last two seasons. He could arguably be lumped in with the two 11m forwards. So, nice summary, yet argument could possibly go either way. He is also popular cos Pool score more goals than many other teams.

I guess the difference here is outlook - you think 180 points is great, and I think it's underwhelming for the price.

180 looks to be his ceiling (roughly), whereas the likes of Alli and Eriksen have proved their ceiling is around 220. There are also a lot of players who could have surpassed 180 if they played the full season. Firmino scored 5 points more than Azpi, who is 3.0m cheaper and not even that popular.

For 9.5m I'm looking for players who might be 200+ scorers, or 5 points per match scorers. Firmino is solid, but he won't make a difference for you in the long run. He's unlikely to outperform his price.

I acknowledged this. But Pool scoring more goals doesn't equal Firmino scoring more FPL points. The comparison with Wood is a really telling one - he only scored 5 more goals and 9 more bonus points in 1000 more minutes, for 3.0 more. Team goals aren't everything.

He got less points per goal than Zaha and arnie last season for playing in a similar position compare points per game this season for a fairer comparison

Pool are going to score loads of goals and the vast majority will come from their dynamic front 3. Salah is of course untouchable; Mane and Firmino are priced the same, but now Mane is in danger of significant rotation with Shaquiri. So I think Firmino will get more game time and that justifies his inclusion.

I don't see why Mane is the one who will rotate with Shaq. It could be Salah or Firmino who get taken off earlier and more often than before if the game is already won. Shaq is as likely to eat into Salah's minutes as Mane's.

I agree, but no one's gonna drop Salah on that basis. I also think there is better value in the Liverpool defence for someone tripling up on them. Nevertheless, I don't agree with the stance that Firmino at 9.5m is poor value.

And Zaha and Arnie will get more bonus points this season. They are also 2.5m cheaper, so direct comparisons are unnecessary, it's about showing how close these types of players might be to matching him for significantly lower cost.

FWIW I'm currently on Firmino and Arnie as my front 2, with a power midfield behind them. Sorloth is my benchee 3rd striker.

Your comments back up my thinking. I've only got 2 Liverpool right now - Salah + Robbo. I want 3, but not sure if it will be Mane, Keita, VVD or TAA. So I've got appropriate defence / midfield which can be swapped to any of those once I'm more sure. Double defence may well be the superior pick, given the extra attacking points the defence are capable of. I also want to watch Keita play and then there is also the unlikely but possible scenario that Shaqiri plays regularly.

For me City and Liverpool will both blow the rest of the league away and both will score tons. Both will also be very strong defensively. For that reason I'm reluctant to pick 2 at the back because altho they'll score well, the forwards will score well too!

The other side of the problem is of course rotation - defenders will be rotated less than mids/forwards.

It's a heck of a dilemma getting the right balance.

Most experts seem to suggest a 4.5m keeper is the way to go such as Fabby at West Ham but i think for the early weeks Ederson may be better.

        I had originally gone for Mendy as my Man City defensive cover on the basis of getting defensive points and some attacking returns but rotation concerns me and if you compare Ederson to the best two Man City defenders last year Ota and Walker who are both more expensive you get the following;

        Total points - Ederson 158, Otamendi 156, Walker 138

Points per match - Ederson 4.4, Otamendi 4.6, Walker 4.3

It was the points per match stat that surprised me as i expected Ota to me much better.

Ederson locked in for me know and will only change if Mendy looks nailed and starts assisting.

I've got Ederson and a 4.0 don't think its worth wasting 0.5m on another keeper as will play him every week.

Had DDG last year for Arsenal away game and got a double digit return even though he let one in. You never know when keepers might score big so i prefer to just set and forget and Ederson is a nicely priced way into Man City defence.

Otamendi or any other defender might get more PPM than Ederson, but they'll be rested more than the keeper. It makes good sense to have one fire-n-forget keeper.

I'm taking a risk on one f-n-f 4.5m keeper but a 5.5m one will nab more points at the end of the season.

              1. @FPL_Chess
                  6 years, 3 months ago

I'm not sure about that. A 4.5 keeper may get less clean sheets than a 5.5 keeper but can often make up the difference with save points. Fabianski is just one example.

I don't think a 4.5m keeper will outscore Ed this year, but in terms of PPmillion the best 4.5s may be better value, hence I'm on Patricio myself.

                        6 years, 3 months ago

Yep, value is more important than points, which people don't realise. I like Patricio but I'm going to stay faithful to Fabianski. He single-handedly won Arsenal the FA Cup in his last appearance for us.

Having a 5.0 mid gives your team nice balance, but can't help but feel it's a dud player. I was tempted by McArthur but sometimes he's rotated isn't he? When Woy changes the system and Schlupp plays.

When you have a 4.5 the intention is that you'll only need to use him in an emergency but he still should be a starter for your team.Personally, I'd recommend Schneiderlin and maybe Romeu/Stephens because they start and have the ability to keep a clean sheet

Palace's new purchase will likely edge McArthur onto the bench. Schlupp will prolly be rotated too.

There are secure scoring 5m mids such as Neves, Cairney and Ralls.

For 4.5 Ward of Cardiff, Stephens and Romeu look secure but don't expect more than 2-point returns.

Not many teams with Kyle Walker? Is he missing few Gw’s due to world cup?

Doesn't have any advantage over Mendy and costs 0.5 more.

Cannot understand the Mendy love at all.

He'll play less than 2,000 minutes this season. Quote me on that.

When he plays he'll be dynamite. When he suffers his season-ending injury he can be transferred for almost any hot defender.
