Best West Ham players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

West Ham United’s line-up for their trip to Anfield in Gameweek 1 will have a very different look to the side that sleepwalked to a 13th-place finish in 2017/18.

Summer signings Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m), Issa Diop (£4.5m), Fabian Balbuena (£4.5m), Ryan Fredericks (£5.0m), Jack Wilshere (£5.0m), Andriy Yarmolenko (£7.0m) and Felipe Anderson (£7.0m) all have realistic chances of starting against Liverpool a week on Sunday, while new manager Manuel Pellegrini has ditched the three-man backline favoured by predecessor David Moyes in favour of an attacking 4-3-3.

West Ham were a team of contradictions last season; no side conceded more league goals than the Hammers, but only the clubs finishing in the top seven kept more clean sheets.

Similarly, while their total of 48 goals scored was the eighth-best in the division, their underlying attacking statistics were mostly unremarkable – more of which we will discuss later in this article.

A grim-looking opening run of fixtures in which the Hammers play five of the “big six” in the first nine Gameweeks will likely deter too much Fantasy investment in Pellegrini’s side, but in Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) the east London club have a player bang in form and in high demand among Fantasy Premier League managers.

In-depth data on West Ham’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the feature below.

No they've signed Mitrovic. Kamara's ownership is high because initially he was Fulham's only listed striker and everyone got excited.

Yeah, Mane could be a route to Hazard. I'm keeping funds in defence so I can get Hazard or Kane at any time.

“It’s a strange one because you want to win for the people here, but you are not losing sight of the fact that the Premier League is more important, whatever anyone says, so I’m having to take players off to protect them in pre-season, in a real game, in Europe."

“That’s very difficult as a manager and we had to make a decision on Woody at half time (abductor) and Aaron because his hamstring was tight, and Wardy just to make sure he was fine."

“It’s a new one on me, especially in a tight game and having to look at the bigger picture."

I think Robbo is the one to pick, VVD never scores despite his supposed 'goal threat' and Robertson has points on the table.

But yeah the 'nailedness' surely points to VVD...

    Jota vs Maddison.

Aside from the potential OOP factor, I'm not seeing the appeal of Jota. He scored 17 goals and 6 assists in 44 games for the team that dominated the Championship - is it really that great a return? It's solid, but I don't know if it indicates he's about to have a real breakout season in the PL wit double figure goal tally and lots of assists.

Meanwhile Maddison got more attacking returns (goals and assists) in less games for a poorer team, and will be playing just behind one of the league's best finishers in an established top 10 PL side. And is on set pieces.

    What am I missing?

      • 10 Years

I was all set for having Jota before you posted this, now my mind is spinning again! Maybe both is the way to go?
17 goals for a midfielder is decent and he seems to have a freeish role so I expect maybe 10g 8a this season which is a good return from 6.5 imo

Sorry! I jus think people are getting caught up in this idea that Jota is a striker, but he's not really. And the stats are not THAT amazing when you consider he was playing for the best team in his division, against Maddison tearing it up for the battlers and now playing behind Vardy.

Exactly. And I think it will be very satisfying if this ones pays off. Less than 1% ownership, he's going under the radar big time. Are Wolves a better attacking team than Leicester? I seriously doubt it.

14 goals and 8 assists in 44 games is in fact less than 17+6 in 44 games, but ok he will play with potentially better players around. Maddison was on pens but we all know Vardy is gonna have them

Sorry you're right. Thought he had more assists than that to be honest. It's tight, they're basically even in what they produced last season. So then it's about figuring out what other factors come into it this season, and this is where I think Maddison has the edge.

I think I'm particularly drawn to the idea of Maddison working with Vardy, as a cheap way into some inevitable Vardy points by hopefully linking up with him really well. Maddison looks like more of a provider than Jota, and this is where I'm expecting him to have the edge. But of course, I could be completely wrong.

Asked this on here before and the only reasonable answer I got is that the starting fixture is hard and that Vardy possibly will miss the first GW. Still I believe he will be a better option so I've been set on him for a long time now.

Ok, so a bit of perspective on Jota.

He mainly played on the wing last season and only played as false 9 Ona few occasions so 17 goals as a winger is pretty impressive!!

Also looks like wolves will sign Traore in next few days from Boro which would mean Jota likely to play as a genuine 9 if Traore takes his place on the wing so more nailed for goals.

Not trying to put you off Maddison as I’m seriously toying with giving him a punt but Jota as a winger had a great return and now possibly as a CF he could be even better value as an OOP midfielder.

      Hope this helps??!

It does help, thanks. If he moves into the middle then that's a whole different story. The other very reasonable option is to go Jota from the start (really fancy anyone playing Everton defence right now) and switch in GW3 to Maddison (when Jota Has Man City) if it's looking like the right move. As it stands I'd be picking Maddison and benching him GW1, which is perhaps a little silly.

No problem and I agree. Been toying with putting both Jota and Maddison in my team to release funds for an “Auba/Aguero” front line.

Currently I have Costa! Go figure..... 😉

    This made me laugh.....

Ederson was the worst value goalkeeper in the Premier League last season, despite being widely acknowledged as one of the better performers. Manchester City paid over £700,000 for each of Ederson's 56 saves last year!

I get that there were not so many shots on him so that doesn't make any sense, but, Ederson is an average GK that is glorified because he is able to use his feet imo.

    Stekelenburg
    TAA - Hoedt - Jonny
    Mané - Salah - Sanchez - Mahrez - BSilva
    Arnie - Tosun

    Ederson - Tomkins - Wan-Bissaka - Kamara

People don't see a 11m striker and immediately reject it, but really it comes down to Aubameyang/Aguero vs Sanchez. Sanchez will likely be playing as a striker the first couple of games, and I'm still not sure if Aubameyang will be through the middle or on the left. I'm even less sure of Aguero will Jesus hovering.

I can't see any value in 5.5m+ defenders until we see who's nailed. Chelsea have a new manager, formation and style so even D.Luiz at 5.5m may not be a bargain.

I quite like the balance - of course a big hitting premium striker gives you issues without a hit but I know you know that :). Can't say I'm hugely sold on any premium striker options myself though at the moment. (I'm not convinced Aguero is as nailed as many seem to be judging by recent RMTs).

Lukaku coming back early and the general feel of Jose 3rd season syndrome seeming to pervade at Man Utd puts me off Sanchez though even though he was in most of my sides until recently.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 15 Years

Cheers Bram. Sanchez is by no means nailed in my team, especially considering Mourinho. I've had Aubameyang or Aguero and a 4.5m mid instead, but I feel like I'm spending 11m up front just because there's no premium alternative (up front) rather than comparing who I can buy in midfield for similar money.

Sanchez should be in perfect physical shape having Chile not qualified for the World Cup. He just might start the season with a bang.

I may still end up on Sanchez depending how things progress with Community Shield etc but as much as anything because he provides a nice route to KDB if KDB isn't ready from the off.

The signing of Lucas Digne puts Baines' minutes at serious risk.

Having spent most of preseason with triple Everton in my side though their preseason form has seriously put me off now even with their lovely fixtures.

Coleman over Baines as it stands but I'm not convinced either currently justify their price tag.
