Scoutcast Episode 263 – squads and strategies for FPL Gameweek 1

The start of the new season is just days away and the Scoutcast crew are still full of doubts about their 15-man Fantasy Premier League squads.

Andy, Az, David and Mark join me to mull over our likely strategies for the start of the 2018/19 campaign as well as reveal our current line-ups.

Across our 82-minute chat, a consensus emerges on backing Manchester City and Liverpool premium assets. But that could all change depending on tomorrow’s transfer deadline day deals and surprise team news.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth look set to supply our teams with a supporting cast of bargain enablers due to favourable fixtures. Well, for now at least.

But the groupthink soon breaks down when we discuss forward options, with Mark looking exclusively for value up top, while the rest of us are more keen to splash our cash.

The hive-mind soon returns at the end as we reveal our top choice for the Gameweek 1 armband, so to help those daring to shun a certain Egyptian we also offer up a host of alternative captaincy options.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Also, this week we are publishing a series of videos looking in detail at each of the Scoutcast regulars’ current Gameweek 1 line-ups.

Who’s the better pick/more nailed 4.0 def? (Already have Wan-Bissaka)
    A) Peltier
    B) Bednarek

True, but I think Cardiff are way out of their depth and will get murdered. 0 points is better then the minuses Cardiff defenders will rack up. W-B should be your only 4m.

Cheers. Many on here are trying to take advantage of 2 4.0s to start, along with 3 sure starters. Cardiff are way out of their depth, but I see them as a team that will sit back and defend from the start. Also can’t stand Hughes.

Yeah, W-B is a terrific bargain, but that's all. If I have a 2nd 4m he'd be permanently nailed last on my bench. I see the popular casual pick, Malone, has just been sold!

    Thoughts here?

    Patricio Foster
    Robo Bailly* Daniels WB Peltier
    Salah Mane Eriksen Jota Stephens
    King Benteke Aguero

Benteke is my differentiator and he looked a different striker in their last game. Think he’s going to get incredible service and get back to his old self this year. Worthwhile punt IMO.

Better to have in your team:
    A. Ederson - set & forget GK for season, pair with 4.0
    B. Mendy - Big upside who knows about playing time?

Can't use two Man City slots for GK + D...

    1. Scratch

      Mendy

And if for some reason Mendy turns out to be not such a great pick, it's an easy swap to Stones, Laporte or whichever seems like a no-brainer

The team receiving mahrez has Lukaku and Aguero as strikers and has BSilva, Ozil, kieta, filleppe Anderson.

Yep, Wood will be handy once they are out EL and Mahrez is Mahrez, likely to bring points when given chance

Ramsey is injury prone which isnt a good thing for draft game and Giroud likely to have gametime issues

Yeah according to the Scoutcast and I agree it's probably the best option for 8.5.

      You'll want a plan for gw3 though v Liverpool.

I can’t wait till Hazard is back... I’ve got Sanchez in for a placeholder for the first few weeks. I think hazards form will reignite to 2016 levels. Named as captain for this season and Sarri loves attacking football so think hazard will get free reign.

Kovacic plays in a completely different role and Hazard plays on the left or 10. Pedro only has competition from Willian but with Pedro is much more of a Sarri player.

nailed on but from the CS, it seems like hes in the Dilva of 3 seasons back kind-of mould...assisting the assister.

Cheers. Bilva is in due to recent form and Pep’s comments. Plan is to switch to one of Ramsey/Mkhi/Ozil once we see how ARS are lining up.

Would make my bench pretty thin, but I could also downgrade Tomkins to Bednarek & get a 5.5 instead of Shaw (Coleman/PVA/Bailly/Monreal)

          A for me.
          But Shaw a definite risk
And Lowton great fixture but Europa
Can't see a lot else a 5.0 that I like but don't trust either of them as pick. Lowton if I knew he would not get rotated around Europa would be good. Set and forget with those fixtures.

I gotta play 4 at the back each week.
Given this formation is going for both Tomkins and Wan-B not feasible in your opinion?
Week 2 against Liverpool is the only week I would not be happy playing Tomkins but would probably have to as bench is very weak.

I’ve currently got Mendy VVD Bailly & Lindelof with Wan-Bissaka on the bench for a 4-4-2.

I would say Tomkins AND wan is not a wise decision of 4 at the back is your plan. But it could work for you. Probably won’t though because as you say... your bench is weak.

Surely 1 if not 2 of your utd defenders are a transfer waiting to happen.
To be honest I tried Bailly and Shaw like you have. But it expensive if the logic goes as follows
        Both play great
1 plays I got Wan-B to come in
        Neither plays not good.

Yea... lindelof is switching straight to Bellerin after the city game! I think united clean sheets are coming though, if there was any good from the Bayern game it was uniteds defense (Bailly & Lindelof in particular)

I’ve got Neves as first substitute that will switch it to a 3-5-2 if one defender doesn’t play so im all good on that front 🙂

    Salah Bilva Richarlison Jota (Stephens)
    Aguero Firmino King
    .5 itb

Could do DDG to Patricio and upgrade Bilva to Mahrez. Any input please?

Your bench is a huge risk. 2x4m & 4.5m. If they go out of favour and aren’t starters you’ll get into trouble.

I’d do DDG to Patricio and upgrade at least 1 player on your bench.

You have 0.5 itb actually... leave DDG and upgrade Stephens to Neves or Cairney actually and have them as first sub.

Eriksen seems like a perfect pick at 9.5, which will give you easy access in GW3 to the city mid of choice.

Some thoughts on Seamus Coleman please? last season can be written off but he's shown himself well capable of being a top 10 defender previously and he comes at a discount this season. Question is, is he still the same player that can take advantage of Everton's brilliant fixtures?

I think I will go with him from the start despite Eve awful preseason
He is worth the punt I think with the fixtures and if it goes horrible wrong Bellerin in GW3 or 4.

Cheers mate. I'm not concerning myself too much about pre- season - I'm guessing the new manager was experimenting with his new team - so I'm punting on him carrying on where he left off before his leg break.

How chelsea gonna play kante and jorginho? who actually get more advance role?

Maybe in a double pivot that Pogba played in last season a lot.

If that happens it means not a lot of FPL points for them.
Kantes never been an FPL pick realistically anyway, far too defensive to be useful from an FPL perspective.

Kantè is a god defense and Jorginho is not a defensive player. At the same time Kantè is super mobile and Jorginho is more static.

I’ve got Sanchez at the moment as a placeholder for Hazard.
I think Sanchez will do well the first few weeks... he is deployed in the front 3 at the moment so is technically a striker atm.

Bellerin in the GW3 onwards radar.
PVA I don't know any of Sakho Tomkins or even Wan-B might be better value

    Best choice from

    A Tosun Jota
    B Mitrovic Richarlison

B - Since Mitrovic is at least kind of a proven FPL player unlike Jota.

Anyone pick Diogo Jota? (Priced at £6.5). Despite commiting too many fouls, he may rise to be a real threat. 17 goals and 9 assists... Not shabby at all.

      In mine.

I've mulled over Costa and Neves but Wolves are strengthening so much - with prob 2 more top mids incoming today, that I don't know about game time any more - except Patricio, Boly and Jota. Now he'll have so much quality behind him he could explode.

I have 1mil itb, anyway I can upgrade? Thinking a 6.5 to Bilva but don't like him!

    Patricio.
    Mendy. Robbo. PVA.
    Salah. Eriksen. Richarlison. Jota.
    Kun. Zaha/Arnie. King.

    Hamer. Gunnarson. AWB. Boly.

Either Bilva or get 2 x 4.5 keepers and bank 0.5 in case Mkhi looks a decent Jota upgrade in GW3?
