Selection

Watchlist Update – Arsenal fixture swing and Alonso form are key changes

Our Watchlist player rankings have now been revised following the first two Gameweeks of the 2018/19 season.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet. It acts as a collection of our current thoughts on player selection for each position, also citing the factors that affect their ranking on the list.

As a general rule, we try to commit to just one player per position per club. However, in some cases we where we believe double-coverage is advisable, two players will be listed instead. We’ve got further examples of that this week.

Form continues to play the overriding role in the factors available to us given that we are just two weeks into the season.

GOALKEEPERS

Ederson (£5.5m) sits atop the list of goalkeepers still, even if Manchester City failed to keep a clean sheet against Huddersfield. Even still, his assist for Sergio Aguero’s (£11.1m) first goal means he has averaged 6.5 points per game so far this season, and still has a favourable run of fixtures.

Petr Cech (£5.0m) rises slightly now that Arsenal have come out on the other side of a tough opening two Gameweeks and now face a more favourable run of matches.

Despite Cardiff’s tough fixtures, Neil Etheridge (£4.5m) simply had to go into the Watchlist after saving two penalties in as many Gameweeks.

DEFENDERS

Now without a rotation risk, Marcos Alonso’s (£6.6m) third attacking return in two Gameweeks sees him jump up the rankings. The Chelsea man is now behind only Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.0m), who remain the top two. Both players are still in top form and continue to have great fixtures.

Luke Shaw (£5.1m) receives similar treatment now that he has two two goal involvements in as many Gameweeks to the start the 2018/19 campaign.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s (£4.1m) red card in Gameweek 2 rules him out of Gameweek 3, damaging his appeal somewhat. However, the extreme value he offers in a strong defence means the Crystal Palace man remains in the Watchlist for his Gameweek 4 return.

Steve Cook (£4.6m) has shot right up after his goal and assist against West Ham, adding to his six-point haul from Gameweek 1.

Ricardo Pereira (£5.0m) makes a deserved appearance in the list after making it two assists in two as Leicester beat Wolves in Gameweek 2. As you will have seen from our latest Big Numbers article, he has the potential for more attacking returns this season.

After returning from World Cup leave in Gameweek 2, Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) gets a mention now that he has wrestled some set piece responsibilities away from Christian Eriksen (£9.5m).

MIDFIELDERS

The form and fixtures of Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Richarlison (£6.8m) and Sadio Mané (£9.8m) make them the top three midfield options in FPL right now.

Joining them in the top four of the Watchlist is Arsenal man Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.1m) after his goal and assist against Chelsea. The Gunners now have a run of favourable games until a home meeting with Liverpool in Gameweek 11. The only factor that could detract from Mkhitaryan’s appeal is a slight risk of rotation with Arsenal’s front-three a little unsettled currently.

Pedro (£6.6m) remains the highest Chelsea option after scoring twice in the first two Gameweeks, although he still carries some rotation risk. That’s because Eden Hazard (£10.5m) is pushing a return to the side although Maurizio Sarri still seems to insist he is not ready to start matches yet.

Even though he played at right wing-back against Huddersfield and was not involved in any of Manchester City’s goals, Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) keeps his place as the highest rated midfielder from the champions, simply on account of his likelihood of starts. The absence of Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m) and his versatility make him harder to drop than most of his team-mates right now. Meanwhile, Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) loses his place in the list having registered just 85 minutes in two matches so far.

Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) receives a boost as his form continues ahead of long period of appealing fixtures for Bournemouth. The Scottish winger now has a goal and an assist in his first two outings with a porous Everton defence up next for him at the Vitality Stadium. James Maddison’s (£6.5m) first goal of the season also sneaks him into the Watchlist.

FORWARDS

That Arsenal fixture swing has propelled Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) up the rankings. However, he is still marked with a C for form after failing to record any attacking returns in the first two Gameweeks.

Conversely, Callum Wilson (£6.1m) has three to his name making it very difficult for us not to push him up the Watchlist with Everton coming to Bournemouth this week.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) is also on the rise after finally proving he is capable of scoring a Premier League goal in August. However, we can’t attach fixtures as factor to him until after Tottenham have got a Gameweek 3 trip to Manchester United out of the way.

Differential Danny Ings (£5.5m) has managed 10 goal attempts in the first two matches, getting himself a goal against Everton in Gameweek 2. While Southampton’s fixtures are a little uninspiring, the former Burnley and Liverpool man can offer value at his price point.

Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) continues to fall down the Watchlist. Salah and Mané are clearly the go-to attacking options with defence also needed to be covered by the three-player Liverpool allocation.

Please could someone explain if I should be looking for a positive or negative XG variance (expected goals vs actual goals)?
It seems to me that when people are analysing a player they can take it in different contexts depending on what they want it to support.

    A) Player is beating XG:
Positive: He is making his shots count / He is a deadly finisher.
    Negative: He's getting lucky / It's unsustainable.
    B) Player has less goals than XG:
Positive: Unlucky not to score more / He's due.
Negative: He isn't a natural finisher / He's off form.

B for me, especially if you know it's a quality player.

I don't understand what the point of it is. I was hoping someone could explain why it is useful.

    3. Goalosaurus

I've assumed that all the top attacking players in the premier league should have +XG, as its based on averages which each premier league attacker should be above, especially those expensive in FPL. Therefore don't think there is a negative for a top striker to have a +XG. If a top striker has -XG then I'd say thats a big negative and they're off form i.e. Morata

However not actually sure what data points is used to calculate the XGs i.e has only premier league been used, have other countries' leagues been used, have lower division leagues been used etc. If only premier league situations have been applied for XG then my point is probably less valid.

      1. Goalosaurus

Only 2 games in though so XG probably not so useful at this stage,

    4. nisag17
      • 15 Years
      6 years, 1 month ago

You need to combine the XG stat with the total number of goals and total number of shots. And also last seasons stats for both XG, Goals scored for that player.

For example:A Defensive midfielder scores in GW 1 but he had only one shot and it went in from distance which meant his XG is very high. But he had only shot in the entire match which means he won't score most weeks as he will not get enough shots and his XG will obviously come done.

Predictions on total points for Salah this season? I guess 190. Pressure is on him now, which he didn't have last year and the curse of the player of the year award the year after might strike!

He has played an awful West Ham playing a suicidal high line and a Palace that went down to ten men. Maybe you're right, bit he has benefited from very good fortune and missef a few sitters while he's at it, which last year's Salah would have scored.

Why is there pressure on him this season and not last season?
He was new to the team last season, he's now an established member that the other players actively seek out when they have possession.

Probably more the United problems in general as a team. However also I don't think Bailly is officially "nailed" in that defence. As you say, Jones and Smalling both waiting in the wings and Jose has never settled on a centre back partnership.

He came on when palace were down to 10, although I don't think Meyer is a proper winger so it was probably tactical at that point.

However, I would say he isn't 100% so it's a risk getting him in. Had him since GW1 so have the luxury of keeping him until he stop getting starts.

Is there a statistic on how many ‘abandoned’ teams there are after the first 4 or so gameweeks?

Players that are popular in those teams are likely safer from falls than others because there are less active owners to transfer them out.

It should be between 30% and 40% after 6 weeks rising to 50% or so by Xmas. And it's true; the early weeks are the most volatile for price changes because the dead weight of dead teams slows things down as the season wears on.

Mark said in the link below that a new form of video would replace the preamble on Saturday mornings?

Is that something that will happen - is it dropped because or Mark’s situation - or am I just not looking hard enough?

    Cheers

What do you mean by “Mark’s Situation”?

Any movie recommendations from the past few years?
    Nothing too mainstream.

Sitting pretty but contemplating a switch from Cairney (5th mid) to Fraser? I don't want to overreact but it doesn't seem like from what I am reading Cairney is getting up the field much and isn't on corners or penalties? Looking for opinions on whether I be better off on holding onto my transfer or make the plunge?

Yes I have two this week and already switched King out to Ings but thinking two transfers next week in case Laca doesn't play might not be the worst thing. Not sure two transfers to shore up your bench is the right move?

I like the team. Perhaps wait with Hazard until the homegames v Bournemouth and Cardiff? I'm not sure he is starting this weekend. (but can still get points regardless, of course..)

Danny Ings at home to Leicester
Will Hughes at home to Palace

    Pedro (352) or Mitrovic (343)

Mitro high goal involvement and if Fulham score seems that he will be involved. Getting a gut feeling about him, but could just be worms.

Pedro looks a key player but will he be nailed with Haz return.

Any advice appreciated. Kind regards, BD

I'd call a goal a game high goal involvement too. Sarri doesn't rotate so if Pedro is nailed he'll be golden. Trouble is we can't be sure until Hazard starts to know if Pedders or Wills is dropped. I think Ped will keep his place, but let's see.

Who will get more points over the next 6/7 gameweeks?

    A) Bernardo Silva
    or
    B) Wilfried Zaha

Both have a great run on games, but i need to settle on keeping one for the medium-term and can't decide :/

Replace Coleman for Bellerin, is a good change?
