Burnley’s fixtures easing up – but their defence remains a concern

With Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (a) and Huddersfield Town (h) next up for Burnley, the Clarets sit top of our Season Ticker for defence over the coming four Gameweeks.

All is not well at Turf Moor, however. A defence that performed so admirably and proved so popular among Fantasy bosses in 2017/18 that their goalkeeper and hitherto first-choice back four all rose to £5.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season have flattered to deceive.

Sean Dyche’s side have conceded as many goals after four league fixtures (nine) than they had after 12 matches of the previous campaign, offering little encouragement for those considering drafting in a Burnley defender for this quartet of upcoming encounters.

Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (£4.9m) were both dropped to the bench for the visit of Manchester United last weekend, with fatigue hardly a factor given that the full-back pair had both sat out the Thursday night encounter with Olympiakos.

Dyche’s comments after the match on Sunday acknowledged the repercussions of the Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround but implied that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) and Phil Bardsley‘s (£4.4m) inclusions at left-back and right-back respectively were merited on performance:

We’ve been trying to monitor the workload of the players, equally monitoring the ones who have laid down a little bit of a marker and done well.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) struggled against Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, not getting close enough to the Belgian forward for either of his goals and perhaps being fortunate not to concede a penalty when lunging at the United striker in the second half.

Mee could soon find his place in jeopardy from Kevin Long (£4.3m) or Ben Gibson (£4.9m), the latter having missed the defeat to the Red Devils with a stomach problem.

With such doubt over personnel and a lack of confidence in the backline as a whole, Burnley’s defenders are not quite the attractive proposition they ought to be for this run of matches between Gameweeks 5 and 8.

The all-important goals conceded column aside, though, are Dyche’s side statistically performing any worse than they were in 2017/18? Members can read on for our assessment of the Clarets’ defence.

There so much group think on this site I think those are risky but decent moves that could easily pay off hardly madness

Give it a break with the group think / sheep move / casual thing.
Opting to go with/without Salah can both following other peoples’ opinions.
Hardly a maverick move to buy David Silva and Hazard as 2 of the most popular players being brought in on this site and hailed in all the articles.

Not sure how group think relates to sheep move plus casual thing or to least they not related to what I meant. Simply meant that talk of selling salah seems to be treated with disdain as irrational by the masses. But perhaps I am jumping to assumptions by seeing three people negate the move. I haven't been on that much recently I just assumed the majority would Condemn selling salah out of fear but apologies if I'm off the mark I might well have jumped to conclusions.

Fair enough - I’m just saying that there can be well thought out reasons for keeping/ditching Salah - not necessarily group think or out of fear of ownership.

Maybe I was being too aggressive, but my impression of this site lately has been condemning every Salah holder as a sheep / fear of ownership 🙂

Personally I think there are good arguments for both - and I think it’s a very interesting point in the season, seeing which “camp” will come out on top.

    After 4 games

    13 defs above 20 points
    12 mids above 20 points
    7 fwds above 20 points

So, if the object of the game is to finish the season with as many points as possible, are you considering changing formation with your wildcard or staying put?

Next four gameweeks might be different.

      Invest in players, not formations.

I think defs will stop performing at the level We've seen sofar, but I also think a lot of them will continue to offer great value.

I'm currently shifting between 3-4 at the back and will prob continue to do so until wc. If there's a lot of offensive heavyhitters offering great value, i'll prob be tempted to go 4 or 4/5 at the back.

I would have read that stat completely differently, considering most premiership teams play 4-5 midfielders/defenders and 1 striker. So isn't very likely that the ratio's would be like that, in fact it actually proves to me that forwards are worth the cash?

"The Clarets’ defensive performances this calendar year heavily suggest that their early-season form in 2017/18 was something of a statistical anomaly and owed more to the heroics of the currently injured Nick Pope (£4.9m) than their solidity as a collective unit: Pope had a better expected goals (xG) prevented total (+9.30) than all other Premier League goalkeepers bar David de Gea last season."

I said this re DDG and the United defence last season i.e. that they weren't very good and DDG's performances flattered their "defensive stability" but never once got a mention on the Scoutcast (I sound like FPL Virgin now) ... which of course makes me a huge mug for starting with DDG in goal this season when 1) He was likely to regress and I'd identified it and 2) I hate premium keepers ... what a MUG!

I think it was clear to most that DDG was the reason United got so many clean sheets. In fact I'd go as far to say as it's stating the obvious.

Would it be crazy to drop Robertson and Bring in Alonso given the tough fixtures and potential of rotation

I think Burnley were never about stopping shots in the box - the arch defensive set ups like Pulis, Allardyce and early Burnley were about packing the area and blocking. Last season Burnley opened up in the second half playing more attacking footy. This season they tried to do that but the Europe league killed them (even if you change some of the players the management have double the work load).

Now they are out of Europe I think Dyche will now have them back to basics. Total defence.

Putting nationality and FPL aside, do people rate Luke Shaw or Andy Robertson higher?

Both very exciting young left backs. While Shaw has improved a lot I think Robertson edges it with his better delivery and sweet left foot. Thoughts?

Robbo one of best in Europe for me.

Robertson for me. That being said. If Shaw were playing for Klopp's Liverpool I think he would be even better.

So, given his form, should I keep playing Holebas regardless of fixtures until he breaks? I'm thinking maybe yes...

I hate the idea of taking a sideways move hit (Bilva to Dilva), since it may bite back. But for next weeks I may have to do some other changes also:

    Patricio / Lössl

    Mendy, Robbo, Alonso, Bavies, WanB
    Haz, Mané, Bilva, Kanté, Hughes
    Kun, Wilson, Kamara

3.2 itb (Ditched Salah for Haz, even though I had decided to wait two weeks with that move...). So my plan now is to do Silva for Silva and take -4. Next week Hughes to Richarlison. WC before gw9 or slightly later. Bavies has had quite nice underlying stats, but delivered nothing. Am I missing something obvious with my plan?

    TEAM A)

    Patricio / Hamer

    Mendy / Alonso / Cedric / Bennett / Wan B

    Hazard / Pedro / D. Silva / Salah / Hojberg

    Aguero / Mitrovic / Wilson

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

    TEAM B)

    Patricio / Hamer

    Mendy /Alonso / Holebas / Bennett /WanB

    Hazard / Mane / Pedro / D. Silva / Moura

    Aguero / Mitrovic / Wilson

    Please help me decide!!!

How is this WC team looking?

    2x 4.5
Alonso - Mendy - Shaw (Bennet, AWB)
    Haz - Mane - Maddison - Schurrle (4.5)
    Lukaku - Kun - Wilson

Dont have any Arsenal is worried, but hard to know who is nailed and who not, so going to pass.
Also, if I downgrade one of 4.5 keeper to 4.0 I could get Fraser and Mitro over Wilson and Schurrle, is it worth it? For me its more like a flip a coin which pair is going to score more.

Like every other Salah-less WC team posted: desperate up top, same in the middle.
