Burnley’s fixtures easing up – but their defence remains a concern

With Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (a) and Huddersfield Town (h) next up for Burnley, the Clarets sit top of our Season Ticker for defence over the coming four Gameweeks.

All is not well at Turf Moor, however. A defence that performed so admirably and proved so popular among Fantasy bosses in 2017/18 that their goalkeeper and hitherto first-choice back four all rose to £5.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season have flattered to deceive.

Sean Dyche’s side have conceded as many goals after four league fixtures (nine) than they had after 12 matches of the previous campaign, offering little encouragement for those considering drafting in a Burnley defender for this quartet of upcoming encounters.

Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (£4.9m) were both dropped to the bench for the visit of Manchester United last weekend, with fatigue hardly a factor given that the full-back pair had both sat out the Thursday night encounter with Olympiakos.

Dyche’s comments after the match on Sunday acknowledged the repercussions of the Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround but implied that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) and Phil Bardsley‘s (£4.4m) inclusions at left-back and right-back respectively were merited on performance:

We’ve been trying to monitor the workload of the players, equally monitoring the ones who have laid down a little bit of a marker and done well.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) struggled against Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, not getting close enough to the Belgian forward for either of his goals and perhaps being fortunate not to concede a penalty when lunging at the United striker in the second half.

Mee could soon find his place in jeopardy from Kevin Long (£4.3m) or Ben Gibson (£4.9m), the latter having missed the defeat to the Red Devils with a stomach problem.

With such doubt over personnel and a lack of confidence in the backline as a whole, Burnley’s defenders are not quite the attractive proposition they ought to be for this run of matches between Gameweeks 5 and 8.

The all-important goals conceded column aside, though, are Dyche’s side statistically performing any worse than they were in 2017/18? Members can read on for our assessment of the Clarets’ defence.

Leroy Sane. PFA Young Player, 10 goals, 15 assists last season, on fire. Not selected for World Cup with Germany, who go out in the group stage. Now Pep decides not to play him.
Do Low and Pep not think that playing the guy might improve whatever bad attitude he supposedly has? When you see who gets into the teams ahead of him (Ozil really earned his World Cup place, right?), if I was him I'd be getting a bit p'd off, wondering what I'd done wrong. His attitude looks pretty good when he plays, backed up by his stats. I'm surprised Barca or Real Madrid didn't pounce.
Just seems like an excellent player to be not playing...

Arrogance isn't exactly a terrible or rare quality in a footballer. But I guess there must be a reason he keeps getting left out. Maybe his arrogance/attitude does outstrip his accomplishments/ability.

Out of interest, would you choose a tatoo of yourself or of a gun? I'd choose neither tbh, tats look strange when you get old and wrinkly. Laser removals will be all the rage when tats go out of fashion...

      Morning boys

Just some insight as to way he was left out the German side. Loew selected him for last years confed cup but Sane withdrew to go have a nose op. This was not for medical reasons, purely cosmetic so the girls would go wild or something. Anyway, so from them on I think Loew said cheers mate, if thats what important to you have fun. No doubt the Germans missed him at WC, but hey

As for Pep, who knows ...

I'm with you. You want to be reactive as soon as the game week finishes and take solace from the another game week coming around at most six days after (instead of 13 or so because of the international break). My advice if you can't resist being impulsive (or impetuous) is to monitor the price changes of any players you're looking to move/bring in and wait to the very last hour before taking action. That way if your decisions did appear hasty upon reflection (e.g. if you receive critical player information that scuppered you 'big idea') at least increasing prices didn't beat you.

I think/hope so, I have Mane for damage limitation as in my mini league no one else owns him.

        • 7 Years

Hmm not sure having Mane is damage limitation just because he plays for same team. With that logic having Mane and not Salah for the game last season when Salah got 4 goals and an assist would have worked out ok (when it clearly didn't).

I Kanexited last year cos Hazard had form and fixtures...he then proceeded to blank for several weeks in a row in easy fixtures while Kane banged in back-to-back hattricks

Won't be doing the same again...Hazard's a classic troll

Salah is fixture proof...he can score (and score big) against ANY opposition

I sold Mo for Hazard last week, main concern for me is not owning Salah for the Southampton match, I have the cash to switch him back in for that game if necessary but then means no Hazard for WH. Can Hazard match Salah....doubt it long term but I've taken a short term gamble.

Literally is a gamble. What I know is if you went back before last week and forecast for a five week period, Hazard was a more than tasty 'todo'. At the expense of Salah is brave/calculated. I've gone Salah-less, however if he goes nuclear against the Saints I'll ask for his forgiveness and return him to the old via my WC.

Yep. Ghezz was someone who was picked out as a potential target (One of LegoMane's better shouts 😉 ) but he's one I'd prefer to keep an eye on for now. Bringing him in now is a risk but you could get ahead of the curve.

DSilva has looked class, but obviously rotation looms in that city midfield, plus after Peps comments earlier in the season about winding his game time down.

However, both look like the kind of players that could be great.

Ok, what to do with this lot? Decent start with 296 points and placed around 13,5k.

    McCarthy
    Mendy - Robertson - Alonso
    Neves - Salah - Mané - B.Silva - Mkhitaryan
    Agüero - Tosun

    Bench: Hamer, Bissaka, Kamara, Peltier.

    0.4M ITB, 1FT

Hate hits.. Still have WC intact, but don't want to use it yet. My initial thought by looking at my team is taking a hit now and another one before next GW:
GW5: B.Silva and Mkhi to Fraser and D.Silva. (Unless there are signs that B.Silva are guaranteed to start)
GW6: Tosun and Neves to Wilson and Richarlison.

    Thoughts?

      Don't wildcard...it's not a bad team.

You need Firmino out and Alonso in

Take a hit, do the two transfers

I'd do Firmino -> Mitro, Peltier -> Alonso, play 4-at-the-back

      Firmino to Mitro
      King to Deeney/ings/Jiminez
      Mhki to Fraser/Maddison
      Pedro to hazard
      Stephens to Billing/Ward maybe
      Peltier to Doherty/Boly/rico

Do people think Newcastle's defensive prospects will improve in the near future? They're ranked top of FDR for Defence at the moment up until GW20.

GW9 onwards, they've got a really nice run

1 cheap defender over that run wouldn't be the worst way to spend 4.5m
