Burnley’s fixtures easing up – but their defence remains a concern

With Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (a) and Huddersfield Town (h) next up for Burnley, the Clarets sit top of our Season Ticker for defence over the coming four Gameweeks.

All is not well at Turf Moor, however. A defence that performed so admirably and proved so popular among Fantasy bosses in 2017/18 that their goalkeeper and hitherto first-choice back four all rose to £5.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season have flattered to deceive.

Sean Dyche’s side have conceded as many goals after four league fixtures (nine) than they had after 12 matches of the previous campaign, offering little encouragement for those considering drafting in a Burnley defender for this quartet of upcoming encounters.

Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (£4.9m) were both dropped to the bench for the visit of Manchester United last weekend, with fatigue hardly a factor given that the full-back pair had both sat out the Thursday night encounter with Olympiakos.

Dyche’s comments after the match on Sunday acknowledged the repercussions of the Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround but implied that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) and Phil Bardsley‘s (£4.4m) inclusions at left-back and right-back respectively were merited on performance:

We’ve been trying to monitor the workload of the players, equally monitoring the ones who have laid down a little bit of a marker and done well.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) struggled against Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, not getting close enough to the Belgian forward for either of his goals and perhaps being fortunate not to concede a penalty when lunging at the United striker in the second half.

Mee could soon find his place in jeopardy from Kevin Long (£4.3m) or Ben Gibson (£4.9m), the latter having missed the defeat to the Red Devils with a stomach problem.

With such doubt over personnel and a lack of confidence in the backline as a whole, Burnley’s defenders are not quite the attractive proposition they ought to be for this run of matches between Gameweeks 5 and 8.

The all-important goals conceded column aside, though, are Dyche’s side statistically performing any worse than they were in 2017/18? Members can read on for our assessment of the Clarets’ defence.

    Current squad for gw5:
    Fab
    Robbo, Mendy, Alonso, W-B
    Salah, Mkhi, Fraser
    Aguero, Firmino, Zaha*
    Bench: Foster; Gud, Gunnarsson, Bednarek

    A) Activate WC
    B) Stick to FT (0.6itb): Gud > Maddison?

No WC, but I would prioritize Zaha if out. Might take a hit for Gud as well, or you could wait for Rich next week.

    Bottomed...

On a wildcard, midfield is a headache... thoughts? Comes down to Hazard vs Mane I think?

    Currently have:
    Hennessy (Hamer)
    Mendy Robbo Alonso (Holebas, Bennet)
    Salah Mane Moura Pereyra (Hojgbjergjghj?)
    Aguero Wilson Mitro
    0.1 ITB

Looking at downgrading Holebas, then one of Moura/Pereyra so that Mane can become Hazard.

Is that a better option? If so, what moves do you think? Or should I just leave it?

      Holebas > AWB
      Pereyra > Fraser
      Mane > Hazard

You should've just instantly hit the WC button and bought a few guys about to rise.

Sort out Zaha if he's out. On the borderline of a WC, but think you just about get away not using it. I wouldnt prioritize midfield. Could get Alonso for -4 with Zaha, but with rubbish bench that prob not a great idea. Otherwise its a -8 which is prob a step too far.

Hmm I would be prepared to take -4 a couple of weeks at least, because you are behind on transfers. WC is also an option ofc, but I would rather take a -8 myself than using it when not reeeeally needed.

I actually like my team, until Bilva and Mhki got benched ofc. Things change very quickly in this game, so a -4 to get Alonso in and i think its decent. Only other id be missing then is Hazard. All these other punts such as Mitro, Pedro, Madisson etc I could do without for now at least. King has great fixtures and Bmouth look good. But yeah fat from perfect.

I think loads of Mkhit, Walcott, Pedro owners just hit the button out of sheer panic.

Your team needs works but youre not making a massive structural overhaul more tweaking at the edges. Id take a -8 and save your WC until you need it OR if you are going to do it, do something decent with it.

              Good luck.

    Patricio Hamer
    Alonso Mendy Bennett AWB
    Hazard Dilva Hojbjerg

Pretty set on this being core to my WC.

    That leaves 4 spots left.

    A) Lacazette, Mane, Fraser, Holebas

    C) Lukaku, Pedro, Fraser, Mane, TAA (-Dilva)

I guess Fraser's part of your core too then? I think I like B best. I want to like Lacazette but I am still pretty concerned about the minutes. Although I guess if he keeps playing well that probably won't be a problem.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

You're right. Fraser is part of the core come to think of it. Originally I had drafts with Maddison over Fraser but it's just spending money for the sake of it. I think Fraser is better than Maddison even if they were the same price.

I've also sort of decided on Lukaku. I prefer spending more on him with options to downgrade rather than have him go on a rampage and be unable to do anything about it. Also a nice captaincy option the week City play Liverpool.

        That leaves:

        A) Mane Pedro Holebas
        B) Dilva Moura Shaw +0.8m

        1. SC not pearls before swine

Yeah, I like Dilva over Mane look better personally. Of course, I guess that could prove problematic if Pep rests him in some of the easier matches, but he's looked great so far. If he gets the minutes I think he'll start to pile up the points.

Agree. The only reason to get rid of Robbo is if you want to use that LIV spot elsewhere. 111 pts last season in under 2000 mins, that’s the equivalent of ~170 for full season

    Lost/ ignored on last page

Doing some good ol’ fashioned tinkering and came up with a left field alternative plan....

What if I say stuff Hazard and his potential and do this:

Mkhi, Wally, PVA > D.Silva, Fraser, Holebas (-8)

    Would give me:
    £0.4itb
    Fabianski
    Alonso, Robbo, Mendy, Wan-B
    Salah, Mané, Dilva, Fraser
    Aguero, Wilson
    (Foster) (Holebas, Hughes, Kamara)

Now isn't that fairly lovely? Or do I have to be boring and just do Mkhi > Pedro, Maddison, Fraser?

      Not lovely it's a -8 and it's a move that's chasing points.

No reason to do PVA to Holebas, especially as you intend to bench him.

Just do Wally to Fraser if you must.

I know and I am actually not a big hits fan. Just particularly high levels of uncertainty re rotation coupled with lots of possibly viable transfers is doing my head in!

The PVA move was just an enabler and thought covered by AWB

I guess I will take out Wally for Fraser/ Maddison

Or join the sheep and do Mané, Wally > Hazard, Fraser

The above article has got it wrong.

Yes Burnley had one of the worst records for conceding shots last season, but if my memory serves me correctly the vast majority were shots outside the box (hence the goalkeeper bonanza for Pope) and few were big chances.

No clue about this case but great to see someone highlight the problem with stats. In this case shots conceded.

They have no real value whatsoever without more info.
Like, you highlight in this case, a heat map to say from where the shots have been taken. Even with that it won’t be enough though.

I distinctly remember Burnley restricting opposition from shots from range. Loads of them, but Hardly any were in the box.

Long range efforts = save points for Pope. Plus bonus because his defenders hit it long and don't complete short passes.

Yupp. That and a lot of pressure on the opposition taking on shots and/or bodies in front of goal. This year they havent been good enough doing this, hence why xG stats are skewed last season and this season in opposite directions.

Re Liverpool fixtures, here’s an important note.
Before each CL group game they play AWAY from home in the PL and post CL games they play at HOME in PL
    Food for thought...

Anyone who has Wildcarded has made a big mistake.

    Why?

If the holy trinity dissipates and you need to flush cash out of defence and move it upfield into a new top heavy formation, you're screwed.

I prefer Fraser - Maddison is good too but to me he has so far seemed a bit luckier with how he's got his returns. Don't forget Pereyra too - he's out of fashion now because he didn't score in the last match 😉

I'm thinking of saving this week. Mkhi is the player closest to the chopping block but I think Emery has been rotating to try and find his best team and hopefully Mkhi starts next GW. It seems like most of their attacking players have been rotated except for Auba.

    What changes would you suggest?

    Ederson
    Robertson Alonso Mendy PVA AWB
    Salah Mane Mkhi
    Aguero Mitro

    Stek Stephens Quaner Richarlison

Thinking the same about Mkhi. If he doesn’t start again then will need to go but by then we might have more info on other budget mids, which could make the swap decision easier. Right now, it just seems like a wheel of bad options.

Hello all, I want to hold onto Mane, Auba and Kun, so I can't get Hazard unless I do a -8, which I don't want to do.

Thinking of doing Mkhi or Walcott(if confirmed out) to Willian, so that I would have both Pedro and Willian, and a decent enough bench to cover potential rotation.

    Would give me the below

    1FT 0.8m ITB

    Ederson
    Mendy, Alonso, Robbo
    Pedro, Willian, Mane, Walcott, Fraser
    Kun, Auba

    Bench Hamer, Jimenez, AWB, Cook

Could roll with this for a couple weeks or reassess after next week's bandwagons appear. any thoughts appreciated

only need to look 6-8 fixtures out. by then some things will need tinkering and you possibly will have made a few transfers anyway with one eye towards the future.

      Depends on the position.

      Keepers - long term
      Most defenders - mid term
Midfielders and strikers - mid to short term

It depends, some positions I look for very long term options but others I'm happy to rotate over a few. You can't change your whole squad in 6-8 weeks. You should have your season keepers and then other players you rotate over a 6-8 week period. I wouldn't plan on rotating too often because injuries and suspensions happen.

with your other four defenders being premium it seems pointless the splurge the extra cash for Holebas over WanB. surely you would be starting Moura, Maddison or Fraser each week instead of one of those two.

        • 7 Years

Yeah thats why i will take wanbissaka instead of holebas. However this season all the defenders are running riot. Holebas taking freekick corners, same for trippier. For mendy and alonso u know their capability.

I think that it's never a winning strategy because it's not tried very often. If you look at Points Per Million and Value Added Points per Million defenders come out on top. People tend to pick more attacking players because it's more fun to cheer on a player to score than get a clean sheet.
