Selection

Watchlist Update – All change for premium defenders as Newcastle creep into consideration

We have revised our Watchlist player rankings for goalkeepers and defenders following Gameweek 6.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on a desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet. It acts as a collection of our current thoughts on player selection for each position, also citing the factors that affect their ranking on the list.

As a general rule, we try to commit to just one player per position per club. However, in some cases we where we believe double-coverage is advisable, two players will be listed instead.

Goalkeepers

Ederson (£5.6m) remains top of the Watchlist after securing his third clean sheet and a fourth return of the campaign in Gameweek 6. However, the Manchester City man loses his Favourable Fixtures factor with two particularly tough matches in their next four. Home matches against Brighton and Burnley sit alongside trips to Liverpool and Tottenham.

Alisson (£5.6m) also retains his place in the Watchlist based on his impressive form. The Liverpool man has kept a clean sheet in all but two matches so far this season. Neither of the fixtures factors applies to Alisson though with two favourable matches against Huddersfield and Cardiff coming after Chelsea and Man City.

Rui Patrício (£4.5m) and David de Gea (£5.9m) are two more non-movers on the Watchlist with no change in their respective form or quality of fixtures.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Petr Cech (£5.0m) appear next to reflect their continued good fixtures. Neither side has been particularly adept at keeping clean sheets in 2018/19, but they still have the potential. Schmeichel sits a little higher for an increased certainty of a start.

Joe Hart (£4.5m) is the first of two new inclusions in the Goalkeeper section of the Watchlist. His clean sheet against Bournemouth was his second of the season as the Clarets work towards improving on a poor start. Neither fixtures factor applies to him with Cardiff and Huddersfield up next but Man City and Chelsea after that.

Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) drops a little bit despite recording a third clean sheet of the season in Gameweek 6. Just below him is our second new entry Martin Dubravka (£5.0m). Newcastle’s fixtures are on the turn now and apart from a trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 8, have several with clean sheet potential between now and Gameweek 19.

The popularity of Marcos Alonso (£6.9m) has pushed Kepa (£5.5m) off the Watchlist. The left-back is heavily owned for his offensive potential, and the current state of Chelsea’s fixtures do not encourage double-coverage of their defence.

Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) also dropped off after yet another match in which Bournemouth conceded more goals than their underlying numbers suggested they should have done.

Defenders

Alonso remains the top pick in defence. The Chelsea man has returned points in all but one match thus far in 2018/19, with three clean sheets, a goal and five assists to his name.

Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) has received a boost after registering his second assist of the season in Gameweek 6. He rises up the ranks as a result of other premium options facing injury and/or tough fixtures. Conversely, Spurs rank second for defence on our Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks, and Trippier has a role in set pieces.

Andrew Robertson (£6.2m) just about holds onto his place but Trent Alexander-Arnold has run him close. The Scottish left-back has shown more consistent attacking returns over the course of the season so far, and we believe he is more likely to continue that during tough fixtures. Robertson is also more adept at picking up bonus points with Alexander-Arnold already earning three yellow cards this season.

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) takes Benjamin Mendy’s place on the Watchlist with a fair bit of uncertainty over the wing-back’s fitness. There is no return date on him currently and until we know more, we have to take him off. Laporte is the most reliable replacement considering he has played every minute of the league campaign so far and has some goal threat too.

Matt Doherty (£4.4m) tops off the best of the rest with Wolves’ defensive potential, appealing fixtures and his budget price. Jose Holebas (£4.9m) loses his price-related tag now that he has risen in price again but still stays in our thoughts with Watford’s relatively kind run and his role in set pieces. The Greek also receives a ‘Sus’ factor as he is one yellow card away from a one-match suspension.

Luke Shaw‘s (£5.1m) return to the Man United team keeps him in the Watchlist and he manages to lose his Rotation Risk factor. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) sits just below him. His slight increase in value has reduced his appeal a little for non-owners and only one of Crystal Palace’s next six fixtures looks like one where a clean sheet is likely for him.

DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) moves onto the defence Watchlist for the same reason as Dubravka. The American has a goal and an assist to his name so far this season and is the most assured of a start out of the budget options available at Newcastle. Jamaal Lascelles is arguably a bit too pricey while there is competition for places at left-back and centre-back between Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schär and Paul Dummett.

Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) takes the place of colleague Ricardo Pereira after the latter was dropped for Gameweek 6. Pereira was held accountable by the local press for the manner of Leicester’s heavy defeat to Bournemouth in Gameweek 5. It appears that manager Claude Puel was in agreement as he deployed Daniel Amartey in his stead against Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Chilwell held onto his place and continued to post encouraging underlying statistics.

Wait til your team has holes everywhere.

And I'd agree with the other guy. Ditch Mane and keep Salah. Use that to fund Kane plus Maddison/Richarlison. (Not that I want Kane, but keeping in mind that you do).

I’d downgrade Mendy to Bennett and upgrade Wilson and Kamara to mitro and Jimenez this and next for a -4, then change keeper the week after as there’s a good few better at 4.5

I get why you want to WC, because of Liverpool fixtures, but cmon do you expect Liverpool not to score a goal? They will score against any opposition, and after few gameweeks they have good calendar again. Keep them

I have signed up as a paying member for the first time this year but this is my 4th year on the site. I generally used to make decisions by looking at what people were saying and going with most people posted. Some of it was good info but actually a lot of it is just people's gut feelings or a biased opinion. My first three years were dreadful but this year I have used the data to research some of the popular talk on hear and it has really helped figure out if it's substantial or not. It's helped me swerve traps I would have fallen into before and it's helped me have the best start to the season I have ever made. Again that's not saying all posts are not useful but be careful with what you soak in on the forums

    Which one on WC?

    A)
    Ederson/Hamer
    Alonso/Trippier/TAA/Bennett/WB

    B)
    4.5/4.5
    Alonso/Trippier/TAA/Doherty/WB

    C)
    Patricio/Hamer
    Alonso/Robo/Trippier/Bennett/WB

No City def is pain in B and C, can do Trip to Mendy when fit but probably would lose City def points against Burnley (H) and Brighton (H).

Anyone considering dropping Aguero after this gameweek? I can only see two captaincy weeks for in the next five, and I have other players just as interesting those gameweeks. I also have WC intact, just in case.

    A) Roberton & Yedlin.
    B) TAA & Chilwell.

B involves 2 weeks between transfers allowing a Liverpool defensive double-up vs. Huddersfield and Cardiff.

tough one. B is probably “safer” but Yedlin has good fixtures coming up so could be a great pick. New and Brighton rotate well after gw9 so defender from each of them looks a good shout.

    Hart
    Trippier Laporte Robertson
    Hazard Maddison Mane Richarlison
    Aguero Mitrovic Vardy

    Patricio Bennett Wan-Bissaka Hojbjerg

    1.2 ITB

    A) Keep money in bank to get mendy back when he's fit
    B) Invest the extra 1.2

With so many teams tied-up with Chelsea and Liverpool players this weekend, is the idea of playing a free hit outlandish?

It is quite easy to ramp up on Spurs, Arsenal and Man City assets for their much better fixtures, having Kane and Lacazette for a week, before returning Alonso and Hazard in time for SOU away and Salah for his Man City fixture which promises more goals that this week's Chelsea game.

Could be a big point swing from everyone else.

I would wait until later in the season, there going to be game weeks were there are only 2 or 3 games.

Long term planning over next 2 GWs, please give thoughts

Pedro + Ings will be out of my squad, potential replacements:

    A) Knockeart + Marko Arnau

    B) Schurrle + Murray

    C) Fraser + Murray

    D) Richarlison + Jimenez

    F) Lucas + Jimenez

    G) Other combo for 12.9M

Saving it for the DGW is the sensible move.
At least don’t use it in a SGW where your choice is a slight risk of only getting 60-70 mins.
Yes, you might get it right in a single GW, But the odds are just better in a double

You are definitely right, but another strategy is to use wildcard 1 week prior to DGW (taking most of those DGW players) and then bench-boost on the DGW. Thoughts?

Usually we have to “big” DGWs. 1 for BB and 1 for TC.
The exact strategies are going to be discussed a lot on here once we get close and have more information.
