Barnes form and statistics impossible to ignore

There is now a large number of budget options at Burnley and Brighton who could prove excellent differentials in upcoming weeks.

While the two sides have experienced contrasting fortunes in recent months, both have assets who have been impressing statistically recently.

These are the focus of this latest Scout Notes article…

Brighton 1-3 Burnley

Goals: Shane Duffy (£4.6m) | Chris Wood x2 (£6.2m), Ashley Barnes (£5.6m)

Assists: Anthony Knockaert (£5.2m) | Barnes, Dwight McNeil (£4.4m)

Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) continued to prove he should be talked about seriously in the budget striker conversation this season. The Burnley man had been competing with the top premium options for goal threat in the four matches prior to Gameweek 26, which he finished with his second-best round score of the season.

Since Gameweek 23, the only player to have more shots on target than Barnes is Sergio Aguero (£11.5m), indicating the kind of company he is keeping. The striker now has seven attacking returns in his last nine matches and cannot be ignored with Tottenham (home), Newcastle (away), Crystal Palace (home) the next three opponents for Burnley. Also in form is Barnes’ strike partner Chris Wood (£6.2m) who has five attacking returns in his last seven Premier League outings for the Clarets, two of those coming against Brighton.

Out of the two players, Barnes appears to have slightly edged things in the penalty pecking order. The former Plymouth Argyle and Brighton forward has now scored two spot-kicks in as many Gameweeks, the second of which was at the Amex Stadium on Saturday night. Wood was the favourite for them last season but has not taken one in the Premier League in 2018/19, although the Clarets were not awarded one until Gameweek 24. Against Southampton, Barnes took the penalty but it was after Wood had been substituted. Meanwhile, Barnes’ goal against Brighton was converted after he had won it himself, so it’s hard to say that he has a cast-iron claim on spot-kicks currently.

“We’ve been brave to play two centre-forwards away from home. I think we’ve got excellent forwards, and their energy and pride is really helping us. They’re scoring goals and we’re making it difficult for the teams we’re playing against. When you have a front to your team the game has a different feel to it.” – Sean Dyche

“We get on very well. We were at Brighton together and there’s where the relationship started. We have just carried that through. We seem to have a good bond together and play up top very nicely and it was nice we were both on the score sheet.” – Chris Wood

Also continuing to make a name for himself as a differential option is young left-winger Dwight McNeil (£4.4m). He has started the last seven matches in a row for Burnley and registered his second attacking return of the campaign by assisting Wood’s second goal of the night. McNeil has now created more chances than any other midfielder priced £4.5m since Gameweek 23 and is joint-top for shots in the same bracket, offering a healthy balance between both statistics.

“We lost two important players in Robbie and Johann. That’s tough, but the group said ‘right, let’s get on with it’ because they believe in each other. I admire the players for that; ‘No excuses, we’re a group, let’s get on with it’ and that’s a powerful thing and they delivered again, Jeff playing out of position and excellent again and young Dwight. There aren’t many 19-year-olds rolling around the Premier League and not many in the fight scene and he’s handling himself very well. I’m really enjoying what he’s doing.” – Sean Dyche

Tom Heaton (£4.8m) looks as if he is slowly rebuilding back to what we knew of him from the 2016/17 campaign. He was the clear man of the match for Burnley on Saturday as he produced a string of unbelievable saves to restrict Brighton to just one goal. Heaton now has additional points for saves in each of his last four matches, indicating he could seriously profit from bonus if Burnley start keeping clean sheets again – with Newcastle and Crystal Palace among their next three opponents, that is a strong possibility.

“I know what a good keeper he is and his alertness made sure we were in good shape. He made saves I’d expect him to save because I know his quality.” – Sean Dyche

While Brighton suffered defeat for the fourth time in five matches, there were two players who showed Fantasy potential for the future. Pascal Groß (£6.7m) was comfortably the best player at the Amex Stadium from a statistical perspective, despite playing just 66 minutes. Nobody had more shots in the penalty box as him, while the German also topped the charts for chances created too. With Leicester (away), Huddersfield (home), Crystal Palace (away), Cardiff (home) and Southampton (home) the five fixtures to come after the Blank in Gameweek 27, owned by just 1.8%, Groß could prove an excellent differential.

Meanwhile, Shane Duffy (£4.6m) is offering goal threat once again, with no defender recording more shots in the penalty box in the last four Gameweeks as him. It should be no surprise that the centre-back nodded home his fifth goal of the season against Burnley.

Brighton were without Florin Andone (£5.0m) on Saturday evening, as he was starting the first of a three-game retrospective ban following an elbow in the FA Cup win over West Bromwich Albion. He is also due to miss Saturday’s fifth-round tie with Derby as well as the Gameweek 28 trip to Leicester.

“A big blow. We appealed. Our feeling on the incident was the action that he did was an action a lot of strikers do and he does it very regularly, where you are protecting yourself and the ball. You will see that action every weekend. The unfortunate thing was he caught him and we are also not saying the lad made a meal of it, because it was there to see. But there was certainly no intent in doing it.” – Chris Hughton

The problems are certainly mounting up for Brighton, who lost key player Solly March (£5.0m) to an ankle injury early in the second half. He was replaced by Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£6.7m), making his first appearance since Gameweek 11. It should either be him or Anthony Knockaert (£5.2m) who comes in for March if he is still not fit by Gameweek 28.

“He’s hurt his ankle. The physios did some work at half-time to see if he could run it off, but he wasn’t able to. Hopefully, it’s not too bad. Solly’s in good form at the moment. We hope it’s not a bad one. He’s in a very competitive squad and we want as many players fit as possible.” – Chris Hughton

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-3-3): Ryan; Bong, Dunk, Duffy, Montoya; Pröpper, Stephens, Groß (Bissouma 66′); Locadia (Jahanbakhsh 66′), Murray, March (Knockaert 48′).

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Bardsley; McNeil, Cork, Westwood, Hendrick; Wood, Barnes.

I think Almiron could be the player that makes you boys noisier than ever this season. Do you think he now challenges Atsu for that left sided attacking spot? Rafa clearly likes him and I think he will throw him in. I'm also a fan of Rondon who will continue to be a key figure for the remaining 12 games. He just needs more support and for Newcastle to have a real go at teams

Pretty sure there are others a la Rondon, Murray etc etc

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but I read it as impossible to ignore the fact that he has good form and good stats, hence making it hard to disagree with the fact that's he's a good option, instead of its impossible to not buy him.

We are all reading this a bit tongue in cheek ... of course it COULD be read that his stats are hard to ignore but that you could still choose not to pick him ..... but where's the fun in reading things so practically 😉

For Man U v Liverpool is it to much to have Mané Salah Van Dijk Rashford and Pogba? Could get Anderson over Mané

    B Get Anderson

Depends who you think will win. I have robertson salah pogba and rashford so sort of in the same position but i would be happy to play the lot and hope for a 4-3 or something. That game could go either way though as form means nothing

Hate questions like this because there's always so many different factors around to consider when comparing two players in different price brackets.

All I'll say is I'd definitely consider Anderson but I wouldn't be considering Eriksen.

I have done Digne to Pereira move. Was going to do it anyway. (I was waiting from 3-4 gw's for this transfer)
Pereira won't play in the fa cup so no injury worries & Digne's days were outnumbered IMO.

Weeks of consideration and the fact that Leicester will definitely not blank improves this transfer.

I'd still worry about injuries and whatnot in the rest of your team, but I can see why this transfer would be made.

I'll probably end up doing it Tuesday as well 🙂

Done Sane > Anderson as one was rising and the other falling and Anderson has no cup game and I wanted Sane out as he has played 59 mins in 3 gameweeks plus he now blanks.

I've made Sane to Anderson. Think WHU doesn't have a cup game - too lazy to dbl check it. Sane dropped already same with Ings needed to protect team value a bit.

Usually holding transfers close to deadline. No FT anymore and I might take one hit depends news from Ings. Atm getting full lineup, captain decision is bot worrying. Anderson having armband atm.

Even asking for advice on transfers before the weekend is pointless. Everything depends on if they are going to free hit in gw31 or gw32 or if they've used all their chips.

I did Sane to McNeil to free up money to do Laca to Aguero and Martial to Sterling after their blank as Sane is not playing and dropping in price, McNeil is now 1st on my bench (TAA and Targett behind), I don't have any players blanking in 27 and I'll still have flexibility to adjust my plans for GW28 if Pogba/Rashford/Salah/Robertson get injured between now and then. Since I'm already planning to take a hit for GW28, I thought making the xfer early a better option.

Used my FT early on Sane > Anderson & now have the below XI for next GW with 2.5m ITB.
    Would you say:-
    A stick with below team
    B Richarlison > Pogba -4
    C Gallagher > Arnie -4

    De Gea
    Doherty VVD Bednarek AWB
    Salah Son Anderson Mane
    Jimenez Rashford

    Speroni Gallagher Richarlison Laporte

    Etherdige - Fabianski
    TAA - WBA - Pereira - Doherty - XXX
    Salah - pogba - sterling - son - Gunnarsson
    Kun - Jimenez - YYY

10.9 in the bank, who are XXX and YYY, any suggestion?

I have just noticed a problem. As it stands i have just 3 players for bgw31 and nothing else. Which means i must have 12 players who should have a dgw32,right? Would it be sensible to build a team for dgw32 and fh on 31 or try and use the next few week to get more 3 players then fh on 32

    1. Rainer
      • 8 Years

Whichever way you plan to play your FH, the sensible thing is to wait till Monday evening, we'll know every game for DGW31 at that stage. You could have more players playing that week and the FH may look less obvious.

GW31 blanks aren't automatically going into DGW32, as many learned the hard way last season.

Not necessarily swapped around. Last season, some of, say GW31s blanks, went into the later DGW, say 35 and some GW33 blanks were brought forward to DGW32.

There's no set way for the games to be moved, we can guess as much as we like but the games can be put any which way.

    Bottomed by new article:

    Each is a -4:
    1) Kamara, Hazard > Auba, Moutinho
    2) Kam, Siggy > Rondon, Fanderson
    3) Kam, Luiz > Rondon, Kola
    4) Haz, Luiz > Mane, Pereira
    5) Haz, Siggy > Mane, Eriksen (or Jota to leave some funds)

Current team: Fab, Button // Luiz, Robbo, Doh, AWB, Bednarek
Salah, Pogba, Hazard, Son, Siggy // Rash, Jim, Kamara

Your team needs a captain for GW27, so I'd look at 1 for Auba.

If there's change left in the bank, Auba could become Aguero in GW28, if you wanted.

priority simply has to be to dump Kamara, forget 4 and 5 altogether imo

He's obviously on the chopping block. Just couldn't decide whether to address him and Button on WC at some point, or to just do it now.
        Thanks!

I was going to use my FT on Kamara > Jimenez this week. Still might but that would triple me up on Wolves(Doherty,Jota,Jimenez)

Would it be better to go with Barnes or Rondon instead who definitely have games in 31?

      I’d want Jiminez.
But Rondon does have a fixture that actually makes him a captain option this week imo.

Yeh I’ve been wanting Jimenez for ages and downgrade Sane last week to get the funds to do the Kamara upgrade.
        My front 8 will be
        Salah,Son,Pogba, Jota,Groß
        Aubamayang, Rashford,Jimenez

So benching problems after this week but my plan is to revert to 3-4-3 with Jota or Groß downgrade depending on wk 31.

IF Jimenez go out of FA cup he is the standout option IMO.
IF NOT then I'd consider Murray/Rondon/King/Barnes in preferred order.

This is true. However I probably need to chalk off the Murray option. As I brought in Groß last week and don’t want double Brighton.

Is the reason Auba has so many sales just noobs and his yellow flag?
Seems the standout captaincy option for gw27 and he only missed the game at the weekend because of an illness Emery thought he would recover from (was also against HUD). With 2 weeks until SOU he's almost certainly going to be fit, unless I'm missing something

..At a bit of a loss given recent form. 2FT, 1.5 itb. Would you do:

    A) Haz & Rash >> Jota & Auba
    B) Haz & Bednerak >> Mane & TAA
    C) something else with 2FT

    Currently have:
    Shaw - Doherty - Laporte - WB - Bednerak
    Salah - Pogba - Son - Haz - Camarasa
    Aguero - Rash - Jiminez

I just checked to see if I could do Jimenez and Jota to Barnes and Son and it wasn't even close. Just for fun, I also checked Rashford and Jota to Barnes and Son and was still 0.3 short (I have 0.8 ITB already).

I don't think I'd do the 2nd option, but I'm willing to listen if anyone wants to argue it (ignore the 0.3 to make it an easier discussion).
