Sterling stars as De Bruyne jumps back on FPL radars

Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) may have been the top points scorer in Manchester City’s win over Crystal Palace – but he was not the only midfielder to bring in double-figures.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) put himself right back on the Fantasy Premier League radar with an exceptional performance in time for the end of season run-in.

As we learned yet more about Pep Guardiola’s side at Crystal Palace, this Scout Notes article documents the latest instalment in an ever-changing picture at Manchester City.

Crystal Palace 1-3 Manchester City

Goals: Luka Milivojevic (£6.4m) | Raheem Sterling x2 (£11.5m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.9m)

Assists: James McArthur (£4.8m) | Kevin de Bruyne x2 (£9.7m), Leroy Sané (£9.3m)

Sterling was comfortably Manchester City’s chief goal threat in the 3-1 win at Selhurst Park. No player was afforded more big chances, and he was top of the pile for shots in the box and efforts on target too. That certainly bodes well for future attacking returns, but Sterling will continue to have rotation concerns hanging over him.

Despite playing 90 minutes in each of the last two matches, he was named in the starting line-up against Crystal Palace and completed yet another outing. With Manchester City currently 1-0 down to Tottenham Hotspur after the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, it seems highly unlikely that he will be left out of the starting XI for the second leg on Wednesday. That would mean five starts in a row for the Englishman ahead of Double Gameweek 35 when they host Spurs again. It will be interesting to see when Guardiola decides to hand him a rest.

At the very least, Sterling seems to be posing more of a threat than Sergio Aguero (£11.7m) who now has just one goal in the last four Gameweeks. Manchester City’s diminutive midfielder is also getting clear of the Argentinian for underlying statistics too, offering better minutes per chance, minutes per chance created and expected goal involvement (xGI) too.

Aguero continues to have his minutes managed by Guardiola too, without a 90-minute appearance since Gameweek 24. Obviously, that has helped him start more matches than most of his colleagues, but in games where he has not looked his best, like this one, it is frustrating for his owners that he does not stay on the pitch for longer. There were suggestions after the match that Guardiola had taken him off because of an injury, although the Manchester City manager has since confirmed that Aguero does not have a knock.

Coming back into the Fantasy conversation after an incredible performance is de Bruyne. He was easily the best player on the pitch at Selhurst, providing two incisive assists for Sterling and Gabriel Jesus (£9.9m). Amazingly, they were his first two of the season, but the fact that he has struggled with injury for much of the campaign it’s not a huge surprise.

Crucially, de Bruyne’s attacking returns against Crystal Palace were in line with the creative potential he has shown in recent matches. In the four outings in the build-up to Double Gameweek 34, the Belgian had created a chance every 18 minutes, so assists were certainly coming. With four efforts on goal at Selhurst Park, only Sterling had more shots than him too. With six starts in the last seven Gameweeks, and potentially a rest against Spurs given his absence on Tuesday night, de Bruyne could be a key Manchester City midfielder to own between now and the end of the season.

“The last three or four games the way (de Bruyne) played was incredible, we missed him a lot. He has the ability and vision to see passes that other human beings are not able to watch. With him around, our paces and passes in front – especially in the final third – are incredible and today he was so committed to defensive work, winning duels and being in that position. And of course, he is fresh mentally in the legs in those situations. That’s why he made not just the two assists that are so important but in all the other situations that we needed him.” – Pep Guardiola

Given that he missed the Champions League quarter-final first leg, it was no surprise to see Leroy Sané (£9.3m) in the starting line-up at Palace. He has worked his way back into consideration for Premier League matches it seems, with starts in both of the last two matches, after just three appearances between Gameweeks 25 and 32. Crucially, he has attacking returns in both of those, a goal against Cardiff and an assist at Selhurst Park.

The fact that he was able to produce a decent attacking performance despite sharing the left-flank with Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) is worthy of note. The Frenchman was making his first league start since November and enjoyed nothing more than a solid afternoon. There was some overlap with Sané, but it was mainly the German who provided the width down that side of the pitch.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) was back in the side overcoming his yellow flag. He was named among the substitutes and came on for David Silva (£8.5m) in the second half. Meanwhile, Fernandinho (£5.3m) missed out with what Guardiola described as a “short-term” injury which could also make him absent for midweek Champions League action. However, Manchester City did not particularly miss the Brazilian with both de Bruyne and Ilkay Gündogan (£5.5m) providing a decent screen for the back-four.

“Yes. (Fernandinho) finished bad against Tottenham. Today he is not fit. It’s short-term.” – Pep Guardiola

Crystal Palace certainly made themselves harder to beat than some were expecting pre-match. They were without James Tomkins (£4.3m) and Mamadou Sakho (£4.9m) and had to field Martin Kelly (£3.9m) and Scott Dan (£4.4m) at centre-back.

The injury problems mounted for the Eagles in the first half when Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.5m) was forced off with a muscle problem. He was replaced by Cheikhou Kouyaté (£4.7m).

The interesting line on Crystal Palace’s attack was that Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) was benched for Christian Benteke (£6.3m) to get his first start since Gameweek 26. Roy Hodgson explained that he wanted a player who could hold the ball up for his side, which the Belgian did admirably against formidable opponents. The Eagles’ manager also cited Batshuayi’s status as a loan player as a reason for dropping him to the bench, so it will be intriguing to see if that has a prolonged effect on his place in the team as the season winds to a close.

Crystal Palace XI (4-5-1): Guaita; van Aanholt, Dann, Kelly, Wan-Bissaka; Zaha, Schlupp (Kouyaté 22′), Milivojevic, McArthur (Sako 85′), Townsend (Meyer 77′); Benteke.

Manchester City XI (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Mendy, Laporte, Kompany, Walker; Gündogan, de Bruyne; Sané (Stones 87′), D Silva (B Silva 65′), Sterling; Aguero (Jesus 75′).

I think all pre-WCers are feeling that way, returns for Mane, Salah, Bournemouth attack and Liverpool defence are the killers.

No mancity in my midfield but went 1 def and 1 atk during my wc gw34.

Have all dgw players except a couple of pool sgw players for 35. Went this way because I was fearful of gw35 mancity rotation because Ive been burnt by pep before and more so than spurs so went 3 spurs.

Considering Salah and Erikson to Sterling and Mane for the run in but this move is -4 on BB gw35 but will wait until after CL to make any changes, if any.

Going insane deciding if I pull the trigger now or wait until rotation . Thoughts?

Thoughts on what to do with this non-WC team:

    Boruc

    TAA, VVD, Chilwell
    Mane, Son, Eriksen, Pogba
    Vardy, Lacazette, Arnie

Price changes are erratic this year - or at least the prediction websites are. Had exact funds to do Speroni + Vardy > Foster + Aguero on Friday as they were both 95%+ to a rise, but here we are on Monday and neither have risen.

I don’t mind them not rising of course, but it makes it difficult knowing whether you have to act quickly or can afford to wait.

They have been fairly decent I think.

Since the template strategy of WC34 kicked in they have struggled. This is because they don't know what was a real transfer and what was a WC transfer.

Once a player rises/falls/resets to 0 due to red flag etc., then these sites will be reliable for those players again. Until then they are pretty much guessing.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 15 Years

Is there not a flag in the FPL transfer data to signify those made on a wildcard? I guess at the time of the transfer they can check the FPL account and recognise the wildcard active so not update transfers in or out, so it isn’t strictly necessary to have that as a flag on the transfer data.

    3. Miniboss
      • 5 Years
      5 years, 7 months ago

They're running the sites without help from FPL so it's a best effort and free for us to use... Besides it's not that long since we had nothing to guide with price rises, at least now there are these guys who do this on their own time and give some idea on risers and fallers.

Agree that rises/falls seem erratic at times but these sites are not to blame.

Yes, it’s a frustration with the moving thresholds and the unreliability that results which is frustrating.

Was feeling pretty good on Saturday as keeping Pogba paid off - not so much so yesterday as it was on the expense of getting Sterling who I hoped might get rested....
So do I chase down those points getting Sterling now, or would the clever move be getting Mané or Salah for Cardiff match? Matches against Tottenham and United not likely to be high scoring, I would assume.

Should We Just Ignore the Double gameweeks ?

Can't help feeling in future i should just ignore the doubles and just manage my team sensibly as normal. Having burned my second wildcard i took an 8 point hit to remove Fraser, Salah, Ake and AWB for the two Brighton muppets, Son and Eriksen. If i had left the team as it was i would have been 28 points better off.

Thankfully i did not have a wildcard to use which meant i kept Pogba, Wilson, Trent and Heaton and ended up with net 64 so far and rank rise from 8.5k to 5k.

Plan this week was to take more hits for the bench boost but think now i will take no hits and roll with single week players Vardy, Mane, Trent, Heaton & Hazard. Maybe everyone is blinded by greed for points in a double week but more often than not it seems to me that they disappoint.

      Similar position to me.

Was going to take a -12/16 this week to get as many DGWers.

Will see how I feel but probably will just get Foster, Sterling and maybe Deeney/Son.

Don't think ignoring the doubles is the solution, but i definetly feel people change their predictions dependant on DGWs.

Captaining a Brighton defender may still pay off and i may eat my words, but looking at the fixtures (Bournemouth and Cardiff) seperately, I'd expect very little returns. But when many look at them as a DGW, a sense of 'well surely I'll get one clean sheet' emerges.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 15 Years

Felt Brighton might lose by one or two goals to Bournemouth but had a very good chance home to Cardiff. Plus set piece threat against two leaky teams, seemed a reasonable punt.

Getting absolutely smashed throws that all out of the window now as the Cardiff game will be a pressure cooker environment.

The DGW fixtures are very mixed. Throw in rotation and you quite conceivably end up with a single game vs a decent SGW’er you’ve just sold.

I think we probably need to pick and choose the balance between good players with a good fixture on a SGW against the returns of two fixtures. CB’s , gk’s and players on set pieces are the better targets, imo.

In a DGW, most of the time, the expected points of the double players will outweigh the expected points of the single players, so it makes sense to want as many DGW players as possible, for that particular week. The downside is in the planning and the rearranging in other weeks to make it possible. In another season, it might actually turn out much better to preplan your DGW for a long time - I honestly don't know what's best

Around 50k OR with BB & TC to go. Looking like I have mini-leagues wrapped up after 3 consecutive years of heartache. Play TC safe or punty?

Tempted to hide behind the sofa for Liverpool vs. Huddersfield, pray for rotation and hope for a big green when i do use it.

What would your punt be!? I went for one this week on Duffy and seems to have back fired massively! If he doesn’t score at least 2 pts on Tuesday I may cry haha. I decided (despite owning liverpool assests) the Huddersfield game might suffer rotation before champions league, and after how succcessfully spurs did it this week, and was planning on putting it on Kane this week anyway.

Fell into the same trap too with Duffy! I don’t think we should beat ourselves up.

Honestly, any Liverpool player could haul in that game. I thought Spurs might beat Huddersfield by 1 or 2 - 0 but they completely capitulated.

I’ll be going into it with Salah, VVD and TAA but ideally would want Mané for TAA. But who knows.. the Liverpool defenders have plenty of creative threat.

    I did a boo boo

Forgot that if you play your WC you can't play a chip the same week.. So the bench boost will have to wait! It means I have a huge bench headache..

I could sell pogba or jota depending on the one I bench but it's a tough decision. Any advice?

    Foster
    Trent, Robertson, valery
    Jota, sterling, son, redmond
    Deeney, aguero, lacazatte

    (Boruc, pogba, bednerak, wan-b)

Agree with this! I went points chasing this week but it could’ve been even worse if I’d gone full tilt and sold Pogba and Wilson too.

We’re buying an extra ticket with DGW players in theory, but doesn’t guarantee the outcome.

Who are people lining up for the DGW?

I wanted triple Arsenal, already have Laca, but Ramsey/Ozil mins are all over the place and the defence is just as bad, outside of Leno. So looking at Guaita (ars) > Leno (CRY, wol).

I want to ship Tark (che). Would you rather have Haz (BUR), or Pogba (eve, mci)?

Need to take a risk and go big to win my ML. Have 2 FTs and £1.6m to help out.

I have no Arsenal and am not worried - cant defend and inconsistent in terms of goals and rotation.

I'd rather Hazard if funds don't matter at all, but reckon both score similarly and Pogba is better value.

If you need to take risks, Hazard could pay off. Defensively i like Watford. Differentials i like Bournemouth attackers.

Pogba’s poor form and deeper position took him out of my wildcard plans, and if Son had started we’d probably have been celebrating his hat trick. I’ll probably get Pogba and Rashford back for their feast in GW37 and 38.

Before the week started I was set on keeping Pogba because it was West Ham but got sucked in to fearing Son would smash my rank and took hits to get him in for Pogba.

Might be my new seasons resolution next year to go by my instinct every single week and try to eliminate all the twitter/FFS groupthink. It's especially tough on here the day before and during the deadline and it all gets a bit mad.

Anyone else suffer from panics near the deadline or is it just me? Best to stay off here the day or two before maybe?

2 penalties, one of them debateable, otherwise not a great performance. Not something to dwell on imo

Early transfers have ruined me. Four Times this season I've tranfered in a player before a rise and he gets injured. Now I will probably make all my transfers just before deadline.

Changing plans days before the deadline is never a good idea imo - yes sometimes it pays off, but going with a logically thought out plan seems favourable.

I'd get your transfers planned out at the beginning of the week, adjust if necessary, then ask others on timing of transfers if necessary.

I kept Pogba, but was very lucky to get returns from him.
He started the game playing alongside Smalling and Jones!

To your point, I was away for most of last week with work, and hadn't checked FFS all week, when I saw the 'template' teams on Friday afternoon, there were a few names of players I hadn't even considered, and names such as Kolasinac - who was in 90% of WC teams the week before, had been completed discounted.
