‘Relegator’ van Aanholt benched for Cardiff’s crucial survival test

Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) has been named on the bench for Crystal Palace ahead of their trip to Cardiff City.

The left-back has earned a reputation for relegating teams from the Premier League in recent years but will have to come on as substitute if he wishes to do the same today.

This is not the first time that van Aanholt has been left out of the starting XI in recent weeks, with Joel Ward (£4.3m) coming in for him against Arsenal in Gameweek 35.

He has been named at left-back today, alongside Scott Dann (£4.4m), Martin Kelly (£3.9m) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.6m).

In more advanced positions, Roy Hodgson has opted for an overload of attacking players.

Even without Christian Benteke (£6.3m) in the side, there are still three forwards taking to the field.

Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m), Jordan Ayew (£5.7m) and Michy Batshuayi (£6.2m) are all in the side, with the latter two playing up front as a strike-pairing.

The Fantasy interest in Cardiff continues to be low, with Neil Etheridge (£4.6m) their only asset with more than 5% ownership.

Of particular note is the fact that FPL midfielder Danny Ward (£4.3m) makes his first start up front of 2019.

Bobby Reid (£5.2m) and Josh Murphy (£4.8m) also come into the side for Cardiff.

Cardiff City XI: Etheridge; Bennett, Ecuele Manga, Morrison, Peltier; Gunnarsson, Camarasa; Murphy, Reid, Mendez-Laing; Ward.

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita; Ward, Dann, Kelly, Wan-Bissaka; Zaha, Milivojevic, McArthur, Townsend; Ayew, Batshuayi.

Just to be crystal clear - Klopp's response of "we will see" was in response to whether Firmino would START against Newcastle.

To not even be in the match day squad says he isn't even fit enough for 10-20 minutes so obviously Klopp knew he wouldn't be fit enough to start in his presser.

Managers generally are transparent about the FITNESS of their players, clearly ruling out players who are not expected in the match day squad. Managers tend to be vague about ROTATION and their specific line-ups.

Couple this Firmino situation with what Klopp pulled with TAA after the Brighton game and, for me, Klopp is no longer a manager whose words can be trusted. Personally, I'll not be transferring in any players playing under him until the last 10 minutes before the deadline. He caused a ****storm by lying about the TAA news and once again he has lied.

This is coming from a Liverpool supporter - do not heed and your own peril.

That WE as FPL managers shouldn’t trust Klopp. Not that Klopp was obligated to tell us the truth.

Saying "We will see" when Firmino wasn't even fit enough to be on the bench is lying. Unless he's fit, and he left him out due to a rift between them or something, of course.

      I’ve never understood this logic.

If I was a manager I’d also be deliberately vague about team selections. Why would he want to give unnecessary information to his rivals?

We have to realise that this FPL mindset comes very much secondary to the actual game of football they’re all playing

I had Firmino before Car, Hudd but sold him after all the ambiguity. You can’t expect a a manger to say yes or no to a player starting/on bench or anything.

Who is to say he did not aggravate something late in training on Friday or Sat?

I didn't say he wasn't trustworthy after the TAA.

In a dilemma with Son RC and I will wait with my transfers until next week when we know more. But what would you do? 0.1 ITB 2FT

    A) Son+Doherty - > Pogba+ Shaw
    B) Son+Jota/Jimenez->Hazard+fodder

I will have to start one of Jimenez and Jota anyways, but with B I have to start Doherty against pool (Other defenders are Dunk and Duffy)

You had Mané last week, yet you captained TAA.

Son got 2 points that week against a bad West Ham side.

What on earth made you decide to spurn triple capping one of the highest scoring mids, at home and playing for a free scoring team against one of the worst sides ever to disgrace the Premier League?

And TC an out of form mid playing for a team that has lost their way since losing Kane?

I genuinely cannot understand the reasoning behind this.

Good football fact. Ryan fredericks is the first defender to get a perfect 10 whoscored rating since October 2009 (Thomas vermaelen vs Blackburn)
That is my right back x

I appreciate this will divide opinion but as a neutral (neither a Liverpool or City fan), I really want Liverpool to win the league and therefore beat Newcastle. I like the way Liverpool play, I like Klopp and I think it would good for the PL for another team (other than City) to win the league.

Excellent. You carry on with that and don’t forget to take your meds before you go to bed.

Sorry too, but that's pathetic. They've been brilliant this season and if they lose it will be just unfortunate because City have been even better. I hope that Pool win it because of your comment.

Not very neutral of you to actually pick a side, Switzerland would hang it's head in shame.

🙂 I’m a Saints fan and bearing in mind Liverpool have literally nabbed most of our best players over the last few years I think I’m being very neutral with my view

Well that’s it. Before today I was 10pts off the lead in one league & 11 pats in the other. Today a shambolic 9pts from 5 players with Doherty on the bench. I blew it. Season over barring a miracle.
