How Jiménez became FPL favourite in excellent breakout season

Wolves forward Raúl Jiménez (£6.9m) takes his place up front in our Team of the Season.

The Mexican provided exceptional value for his loyal owners in 2018/19, scoring a total of 181 points.

He also played a key role for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side who finished seventh, qualifying for Europe in their first campaign back in the Premier League.

Not surprisingly, Jiménez topped our forwards poll with 1,216 votes, finishing comfortably ahead of Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) in second.

Player Number of votes Share of vote
Raúl Jiménez 1,216 36.21%
Sergio Aguero 962 28.65%
Callum Wilson 577 17.18%
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 367 10.93%
Jamie Vardy 189 5.63%
Alexandre Lacazette 47 1.4%

However, we will be able to enjoy his exploits in 2019/20? We’ve taken a look…

THE STATISTICS

Jiménez belied his starting price of £5.5m this season

The former Benfica man found the back of the net 13 times and chipped in with 10 assists in 2018/19, a very impressive return from a striker who cost a mere £5.5m in Gameweek 1.

All of Jiménez’s goals were scored from inside the box but he was a lot more than just a penalty-box merchant.

The Mexican created 13 big chances for his teammates this season, a number matched by just one other forward, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson (£6.9m).

Looking at his numbers for the whole season, one of the most eye-catching is his tally of 31 bonus points. The only players to earn more this year were Eden Hazard (£11.0m) and PierreEmerick Aubameyang (£10.8m).

Jiménez is a player who is well suited to the BPS system in FPL and his owners reaped the benefits of that.

One of the best things about the Wolves forward was his consistency of starts.

On the FPL website, he is the only forward listed for Wolves with rotation never really a worry apart from the latter stages of the FA Cup run.

The 28-year-old featured in all 38 matches this season, making him the ideal ‘set and forget’ budget forward.

When it came to points-scoring, Jiménez was consistent rather than explosive this season, registering just four double-digit hauls, his highest score in a single Gameweek just 12. Accordingly, he ranked sixth amongst forwards for points-per-match (4.8).

Crucially, Jiménez offered reliable threat with only Aleksandar Mitrovic (131) and Sergio Aguero (118) had attempted more shots at goal than Jimenez (111) in 2018/19.

In terms of expected goals (xG), Jimenez ranked fourth for forwards with 15.20, higher than the likes of Harry Kane (14.77) and Wilson (13.43).

SEASON RECAP

Jiménez was a complete unknown when he made his Premier League debut

Jiménez wasted no time in announcing himself to Fantasy managers, scoring on opening day in the 2-2 draw with Everton at Molineux. Those who jumped on him for Gameweek 2 were left frustrated as he then blanked in the next three matches before he started to return consistently.

He got his second goal and his first bonus points of the campaign in the 1-0 win over Burnley in Gameweek 5 and followed it up with an assist in each of his next three appearances to keep the points trickling in.

His first double-digit haul came against Spurs in Gameweek 11 when he scored, got an assist and took home all three bonus points despite Wolves losing 3-2.

That big return against Spurs wasn’t a one-off as Jiménez ended up performing very well against the top-six sides.

Nine of his 23 attacking returns in 2018/19 came against those teams as he and his team-mates forced Fantasy managers to flip the Season Ticker on its head.

His most productive spell came between Gameweek’s 23 and 32 when he racked up 69 points thanks to six goals, four assists and 16 bonus.

The season did admittedly peter out for Jiménez, as he managed just one attacking return (a goal against Watford in Gameweek 36) over the last six Gameweeks.

OWNERSHIP

By the second half of the season, most Fantasy managers had their hands on Jiménez

Jiménez was an unknown quantity going into the season having just joined Wolves on loan from Benfica. This was reflected in his ownership for Gameweek 1 with just 129,989 managers getting to celebrate his goal against the Toffees.

It wasn’t until Gameweek 7 that his price and ownership began to skyrocket. Following a goal against Chelsea in Gameweek 15, he was in more than one million teams for this first time going into Gameweek 16 only to disappoint his new owners by playing just 30 minutes for a one-point return.

During his strong run of form from Gameweek 23 onwards, Jiménez’s ownership and price rose steadily. In Gameweek 27, he passed the two million mark for ownership and cost £1.3m more than he did at the beginning of the season.

His ownership and price reached their peaks for the home game against Fulham in the penultimate Gameweek of the season, a game in which he blanked despite playing 90 minutes to frustrate his owners. At that point, he was in 2,448,517 teams and had reached a price of £7.0m.

We didn’t know too much about the Mexican this time last year, but we certainly do now.

THE PROSPECTS

Jiménez’s success in 2018/19 will almost certainly cause a huge price hike for 2019/20

Sadly, the days of celebrating every Jiménez goal may be over for many of us.

Of all the players in the game, the Mexican is likely to see the biggest price rise for the new season given how well he performed in 2018/19 and how cheap he was.

If he comes in anywhere around the £8.0m mark, a lot of managers may look elsewhere for their budget striker next season.

If Diogo Jota (£6.3m) gets reclassified as a forward for 2019/20, he is likely to be a more popular pick than Jiménez as he will almost certainly be cheaper.

The Portuguese international really found his feet in the second half of the campaign and could be a great option from the start next season.

There is also talk that Wolves could bring in another striker in the summer which could affect Jimenez’s game time. Salomon Rondon (£5.9m) is one name that has been mooted.

Even if they do sign a striker, Jimenez is likely to remain as the number one up front, but we could see him get substituted more often than he did this season and maybe even get rotated from time to time, especially with Wolves competing in the Europa League next season.

Whatever happens in 2019/20, this campaign will be forever remembered in Fantasy folklore as the Raul Jiménez season.

I didn't mind that Jimenez wasn't explosive. It's good to have a few players that are 'solid' just ticking the points over. Covers for when the explosive guys blank.

        Trent: £5m - £5.8m Defender 185pts [6.4ppm]
        Jimenez: £5.5m - £6.9m Attacker 181pts [4.8ppm]

        Hmm.

Jimenez had a great season. But in no way was this season all about him.

One of the many reasons I won't be renewing membership. Like quite a few others, I'd imagine.

Ever since that article was posted on here justifying Brighton players for the DGWs I was alarmed. Clearly, those bells are still ringing.

They need some creative central midfielders IMO. If Eriksen drops deep then they lose his creativity higher up the pitch. If he plays up the pitch then there is noone to force the play from midfield.

Lo Celso will be a good signing if confirmed.

Anyone watch Antony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz this morning?

It was great to finally see AJ getting exposed for the fraud that he is and i was sick to death of watching him fighting old men and small men and going around calling himself heavyweight champ with belts that he did not win in the ring but done his best to keep them hostage once he had em.

It was just a pity that it was not against Wilder or Fury so that there would be a better chance of seeing an unified undisputed heavyweight champ in this generation.

As opposed to who? Wilder? Who is avoiding a Joshua fight, has a singular style, and got out-boxed by Fury who clearly wasn't at his best (and couldnt have been after so long out and only some recent bouts against boxers not talented enough to lace his gloves).

Joshua needed testing but the talk of him being exposed is barmy. Tons of the heavyweight greats have been knocked out, some in surprising circumstances, and come back strong. Jushua lost because he under estimated his opponent and left himself open when trying for an early win. He lost it after being hit in the third - he never recovered after and the writing was on the wall. One punch doesn't define a boxer - he will be back and Ruiz will slip away. And Wilder will lose if he faces Fury again and he will lose against Joshua imo, especially outside of America.

Although Fury is the best of them all for my money, but that doesn't mean Joshua is a fraud.

If he showed the heart of a champion i would not be calling him a fraud but that is just not the case.

He has consistently avoided the top boxers in the division and fought old and smaller boxers often giving them short notice the only reason he fought in the USA is because the true champ Fury is showing the way.

AJ's stock has taken a massive hit and Eddie Hearn will not get away with low ball/insulting offers to fighters anymore when it comes to Joshua and when/if a AJ vs Fury/Wilder fight is made he will be on the B-side of the deal imo.

Has Wilder showed the heart of a champion? Do you have any evidence that Wilder has been offered insulting amounts to fight? Has Wilder come to fight in the UK? Joshua did go to the US and he did it for a reason.

Also - 'giving them shorter notice' is a ridiculous claim. Fighters dropping out are not his fault! And by the same token, he has less time to prepare for the fighters too.

Indeed Wilder has never fought outside of his comfort zone of the USA but at least he has taken fights against fighters others have avoided like Ortiz and Fury.

You should not really need any evidence of Eddie Hearn's skullduggery but just take it as a given. 😉 This article from Ring Magazine before the Povetkin fight was made it a typical example of how Eddie low balls the likes of Wilder so as not to get a deal over the line.

              https://www.ringtv.com/532936-hearn-offers-wilder-12-5-fight-joshua-take-leave/

I know that it is outside of AJ's control when a fighter drops out but it also tells a lot about the caliber of opponent he is pitting himself against.I thought he should have fought White next as Dillion has earned a shot and is a much better boxer than he was when AJ defeated him earlier in his career but i reckon AJ got cold feet when he seen just how good Dillion was against Dereck Chisora.

Ortiz is close to 40 and you accused Joshua of fighting old men ? and he fought Fury in basically his first big fight rather than waiting for him to get back to his best. Fury won that fight imo anyway . Wilder has dodged White for ages . White has basically done everything under the sun to be Wilder's mandatory and Wilder still won't give him the fight . Joshua is definitely the A side of a fight with Wilder I don't have a clue what offers have been made

Yeah good point.I have heard some people even speculate that Ortiz is actually older than 40 and you are right about Wilder only giving Fury a shot because he reckoned that he could not come back considering the condition he was in at the time.

In saying that Ortiz is still a very dangerous boxer and he might even upset Wilder in the rematch if it happens.

No guarantees that AJ will win the belts back against Ruiz in the rematch as Andy seemed to have AJ's number and if that is the case he certainly would not be the A side vs Wilder.

It is a shame really that we have not got to see a unification fight between undefeated champs and AJ's loss will take the shine of any such fight in the future.

Second round of the Fantasy Cricket World Cup game starts tomorrow. In this round you get unlimited transfers, but after this round it is 5 free transfers and a -10 for each further transfer. Thoughts on strategy?

Quite keen on loading up on England myself. They have Pakistan in Round 2 and Bangladesh in Round 3. One advantage of England being that we see their starting XI before the Round 2 deadline so can decide whether to load up on bowlers or batsman depending on what happens at the toss.

Other than that New Zealand look interesting with Bangladesh and Afghanistan in Round 2 and Round 3.

Yeah seems like a sensible plan.

The odd Indian player would be a good idea as well imo.

Reckon the newz afg game will be affected by rain given its going to be played in taunton. Rain predicted in London on Wednesday too. Tricky stuff

I still think 5 FT is plenty for the round after.

Loading up on Eng/Pak for bowling and Aus/WI for batting. Aus also have a double in R4.

Williamson for the TC chip, then bring in India for Round 3 once I’ve had a chance to see them play.

Crunch game now for South Africa vs India on Wednesday. Probably can't afford to lose that one.

I don't think you need to take chances. Round 2 is quite difficult IMO. Each team only has one game (so no DGWs), the weather is uncertain and the fixtures are not the easiest to call (SL vs AFG, AUS vs WI and IND vs SA are all tough games to pick players from).

The top 2 overall get an all expenses paid trip to Australia to watch a game at the World T20 Finals in 2021.

There is the same prize for the winner of each country league (e.g England has its own country league)

The winner of each round gets an Oppo phone.

Salah sold to Barca or Real Madrid would mix things up a bit.

His high price tag is hard to work around and if him and the likes of Hazard feck off it should open the door to some other bargains and even bring a bit more verity to the game.

In the ICC Fantasy Cricket this is my planned round 2 squad. 6 England, 3 NZ and 2 Indian. One rule I am not understanding ( even although read rule and used it) is the free hits. Clearly Star Captain applies to captain only but does Star Striker and Bowling Machine apply only to selected player or all your strikers/ bowlers? Also this seem like decent round 2 team?

      Dhoni Butler
      Guptill Kohli Root Roy
      Stokes
      Archer Wood Henry Boulton

Star Striker and Bowling Machine apply to all players playing in the game you select the Free Hit for.

E.g. If you choose Star Striker for the Eng v Pak game then it will apply to Buttler, Root, Roy, Stokes, Archer and Wood.
E.g. 2 If you choose Bowling Machine for the NZ vs BAN game then it will apply to Guptill, Henry and Boult

I’d like to go very light up top this year. However.. finding those players early doors is very tough and not have a flexible team structure GW1 is high risk with possible early WC/hits required if a premium striker or two hits form.

This is going to be the decision I will find tough.

I'm considering 4-5-1 with 3 cheap strikers, and will play whichever has form/fixtures, and transfer as options become obvious

likes of jiminez and Wilson will undoubtedly get a price hike, but Pukki looks like potential if Norwich can handle the step up

auba/kane etc just overpriced, rather have big hitting mids

Unfashionably I’m almost certain to go with the premium striker.

Last time out I did very nicely with Kane getting him in a couple of games in after WC and then switching to Kun midway through. Around gw20 or so he was right up there.

Other point is if you avoid Kane and Auba options your likely captain options are probably limited to City Liverpool now Hazard is gone and United are duff. There’s positive mileage imo in having a spread of top 6 teams options.

I always set my team following the deadline the GW prior to mitigate some risk.

Then I guess try get in the habit of checking ?

Also.. the official app on iOS at least can send you a notification 2 hours prior to any deadline.

Tough week to call with the weather in ICC fantasy.

NZ & Aus games look uncertain from what I can see. That's a shame as I wanted to play a chip in the Aus v WI game - might have to switch to SA v India now.

Definately going Eng bowlers & Amir if Eng bowl first in case Pak get skittled out again. I'll cover the batting with Stokes & Alli.

With India I see a load of batsmen that could pile up the runs so tempted to go 2 x keepers with De Kock & Dhoni and then pile up on their batsmen. It's a shame with the Aus match as I had planned to big on batsmen from both Aus & WI.
