FPL Question Time – Consult our panel ahead of Gameweek 3

It is a short but important week coming up for Fantasy Premier League managers.

There are some big decisions to be made ahead of Gameweek 3 as some prepare to spend their two free transfers, others consider the Wildcard and that’s before we even get on to the captaincy.

So we’ve put together another panel of fine FPL minds to help you with any dilemmas.

Who’s on the panel this week?

Simon March – Former FPL champion who won the title in 2014/15 and has provided excellent advice ever since.

Always Cheating – The USA’s number one FPL podcast duo comprising of Josh and Brandon.

Gregor – Long-time Fantasy Football Scout moderator.

Doosra – Fantasy Football Scout user with some rather popular custom tables.

    Ladies and Gents

So this is what my team would look like if I removed Vardy and Perez but with a -8 hit. Also Perez and Vardy prices bond to drop so makes replacing them become more difficult especially when KDB's price will be rocketing.

    Pope
    Pereira TAA VVD
    Mcginn Salah Sterling KDB Trossard
    Pukki Jota

    Button Dunk Lundstram Greenwood

I will have 0.2 in the bank and KDB bound to get a good haul again vs Bournemouth.

I also will not be thinking of usibg my WC yet.

    Honest thoughts appreciated.

Not sure why Perez, Vardy to KDB, Pukki is good move but shouldn't cost -8. Vardy and Perez could score well over next two. I'm holding Perez for time being.

Already used 2 frees in getting Pukki and Martial. Quite fearful of no KDB and Moura on bench. Worth a hit - 8 to get KDB?

    A Team fine as is
B TAA to Zouma/5 m defender and Moura to KDB -8

    Pope
    TAA* Van Dijk Digne
Salah Sterling Martial Moura Trossard *
    Pukki Jota

    McGovern Diop Rico Greenwood

Bit more to it than that! Son hasn't played yet so form isn't clear nor is his starting spot guaranteed atm. Happy to captain Kane this week, wouldn't captain Son for the reasons I just mentioned. Kane is a 200 point per season player, Son's highest score is 178. Most minutes Son has got in a season is 2200, Kane starts pretty much every week when fit. Kane takes penalties, Son doesn't. Son can get subbed early, Kane less so.

Anyhow, would like to have Son but not atm

There seems to be doubt out there as to whether he will start but for me it's a total no brainer to be honest - see my thoughts in other post below

Basically He's head & shoulders above Lamela & Moura as a forward

Crucially they'll likely want him with at least one game under his belt before arsenal - what better way to warmn up for the Derby than Newcastle 🙂

Last season between GW11 and GW 22 (until Kane got injured), Son got 8 goals and 6 assists, Kane got 9 goals and 3 assists. That was pretty much when Spurs were running hot. Son blanked three times during this period but started on the bench twice. If this is anything to go by then Spurs are running hot when both Son and Kane are.

After GW22 Son got 3 goals in 3 games and then Spurs fell off a cliff. For the record, in the last 11 game weeks Son got 1 goal and 1 assist (and 1 red card!)

Except there is a chance son doesn't start this week. Moura and lamela did well last game.

Son pretty much definitely starts imo

He's their best pacy forward by quite some distance - and well rested

They'll want him firing on all cylinders for the arsenal game next week so will give him target practise v Newcastle

do the same, but with 16/17 Kane 😉 tbh it's hard to argue that mids are better than forwards, catching form potentially harder though? not sure

check out Martial too, it's ridiculous - it's only Cantwell vs Wickham that's making me stick to 343 for now - but when I do wildcard it's power 5 for sure

Martial could be the beneficiary of some (with 20:20 hindsight) questionable pricing and positioning decisions by FPL Towers - he looks set for FPL greatness if he can avoid injury

it does, but the story is incomplete, it depends on the available pool of mids and strikers IMO - head to head, and in form, Son does win - think everyone knows this anyway

Son was incredible when in form, but when he wasn't, a different story. He seemed to be better without Kane on some occasions also.

Now they have Ndombele, but also Lucas in form. Eriksen is also fit now, but there are some question marks.

That run of poor form coincided with a massive dip in Spurs general performances tho. If you back them to do well, hard to see Son not involved.

I was thinking earlier would the new central mids inadvertently help Kane this season in terms of him not being required to drop as deep

But to be honest, even if he is lumped up front, son looks too good to turn down for a Salah Sterling team - he's so dangerous and effectively a striker

It is a coin toss imo. If Son is in form, he is probably better option. Goals are 5 pts and assists only 3 pts.

I also believe that Captain Silva will play easier games and "steal"
some assists from KdB. (At least this is a possibility mentioned by Markus here.) We may(?) find out later, but very similar points for both is a possibility.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years
              5 years, 2 months ago

Id put KDB ahead of him at the minute - purely because he IS currently in firm and IS currently turbo nailed

But I think come next Monday Son will have made a big splash that will have a lot of folks pondering this question and possibly fluttering even more wildcards

When both are in top form, son shades it though, he scores hattricks from midfield at this best

Yeah that’s true but that’s also something you gotta take into account, the players aren’t in top form all the time, and so longer term Kevin might still edge him... Quite tough to have a midfield of Salah/Sterling/Son/KDB which I would like to have...

I considered both and ended up doing A. My reasons were:

      - I prefer Martial and Pukki in the long run vs Kane and AWB, getting them in avoids further price rises which could be about 0.4 combined.
      - AWB is likely to get a CS vs Palace but not so sure about later fixtures while I like the 2 fixtures of TAA after Arsenal.
      - With most people getting KDB now, I think Sterling might be the best captaincy option against the weak Bournemouth defence to hedge against double City attacker owners.
      - Perez doesn't seem to fit in to the system and wouldn't be surprised if he is benched; I don't expect him to score/assist even if not benched. Moura is also unlikely to start but even if he plays the last 30 min against Newcastle, his chance of getting returns is not too bad imo.

Of course the risk is quite high to go into the GW without Kane but the reasons above outweighed this risk for me.

Martial personally, by about 50 million miles, only because Pukki is surely due to regress from that ridiculous scoring rate whereas martial clearly has another 2 maybe 3 gears to go up... And had the fixtures and crucially is absolutely nailed now

      Martial due to that fixture

Martial only based on the fixture. Pukki is on fire!

Don't think it's doable without a Salah downgrade which is probably a bad idea

Not possible to get Son, unless you straight swap him for KdB, which I wouldn't really advise.

Probably best holding the transfer until we have firm news on Digne, given how weak your bench is.

Suggested changes here, if any? 2 FT, 0ITB

Hold and wait on injury news re Digne or else go Robbo & King > AWB & Pukki (possibly followed by Perez > Martial the week after)

    Pope - Button
    Robertson - VVD - Digne - Zinchenko - Lundstram
    Sterling - KDB - Salah - Perez - Dendocker
    King - Jota - Greenwood

Flirting with the WC. Worth it for these?

    Jota > Pukki
    Salah > Mane
    Ceballos > Martial
    Zouma > Soyuncu
    TAA > VVD
    Rico > Lundstram

Thing is, whilst most of those moves would look sound as part of a WC, you're not gonna make the same moves for hits. Are you really gonna take out Jota for a -4 ahead of Burnley at home, or one of the Liverpool moves which are a bit sideways? If you really wanna restructure a WC may be best.

In honesty - I don't think I'm in terrible shape for the week ahead, and likely won't take any hits. It's either stick or wildcard.

Feels like a lot of restructuring to essentially get in Martial and a few on form (price rising) players with iffy fixtures. Probably not worth a wildcard.

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Pope
    Laporte Mina Montoya Lundstram
    Salah Sterling KDB Ceballos
    Kane Pukki

    Stek Cantwell Pieters Wickham

Martial instead of KDB enables much more balanced team and better defence but do like having him in. Laporte/Mina will prob be Digne/Walker if Digne fit

    Can't decide on a -8 or a -4 this week. Thoughts?

    A. Robbo + Salah + Perez + Wilson > Montoya + Mane + KdB + Rashford (-8)

    B. Robbo + Perez + Wilson > AWB + KdB + Pukki (-4)

I'm not concerned with holding Moira because I think he will come off the bench with Spurs 3 or 4 up and I'll take his goal or assist points happily. Or am I just kidding myself?

Are the Rate my Team predictions reset after each gameweek or longterm predictions? Trossard scored one, had another VARsed and at home to Southampton predicted to get 2.65 points. Granted one game isn't a great base for data but it seems fairly low.

    1. Marty McFly
      • 12 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

They get updated regularly. They factor in likeliness of starts etc. If you hover over Trossard you'll get an adjusted value without his expected minutes taken into account. The sensible thing to consider is he's just scored, is a good different and he's at home to Southampton.

    Thoughts? Currently have.

Pope (Button), Coleman-TAA-Van Dijk-Zinchenko-(Lundstram), Salah, Sterling, Tielemans, Dendocker, (Robinson), King-Kane, (Greenwood)

    2 FT.
    A) King, Tielemans & TAA > Pukki, Martial & Wan Bissaka -4
    B) King, Tielemans & V Dijk > Pukki, Martial and 5 mil defender. -4
    C) Want to get Robinson out but want Martial and Pukki

Pukki has been great in two games and I hope he lights up the PL but will be interesting if defences are so hospitable to him.

A looks OK, but you could get rib by Robinson by doing King, VVD (or TTA) and Robinson to Martial, Pukki and the best defender you can afford.

Why are people on a WC preferring Pope/Ryan over Adrian? 3-4 GWs with a Pool CS cover while Burnley, for example, has (wol LIV bha) over the next three. Is it because you don't want to spend a transfer on getting him out later?
